& These questions SUCK! Who’s most likely to end up on Skid Row? All of us. It would be a step up! Are you still the Youth Gone Wild? Dave ‘The Snake’ Sabo In mind and spirit but (Guitar) definitely not body! What’s the best thing about touring? Playing the show. Nothing comes close to that time on stage. And the worst? Ingesting the flatulence of 9 other guys in a tour bus on a nightly basis for 6 weeks. Who’s Joe and is he as Ugly as your name says? He’s a punk. Yes.
What do you want to be when you grow up? An OctoMom.
Do you still hate everything about me? No, not everything.
What’s your favourite song to play live? Kings of Demolition/Monkey Business/Quicksand Jesus.
What’s the best thing about touring? The actual time on stage.
Klaus Eichstadt
(Guitar) And the worst? Hangin’ with a bunch of dudes all the time.
What do you want to be when you grow up? Responsible What’s your favourite song to play live? “Milkman’s Son”: It’s really easy. Who has the biggest feet in the band? Me What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened on tour? Playing in front of the biggest crowd ever in the history of the band, at the Polish Woodstock, almost 20 years after our last hit record. Awesome, but Kinda weird? Who has the worst tour bus habit? We are all pretty well trained at this point. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve been asked in an interview? “What’s the weirdest thing you’ve been asked in an interview?” If you were a crisp (chips) flavour, what flavour would you be? Piss and Vinegar Who would win in a fight, Skid Row or Ugly Kid Joe? Skid Row. Why should we come see you on the UK tour? Because you have nothing better to do!
Who has the biggest feet in the band? No one. We’ve all just recently had our feet amputated as a band bonding experience! What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened on tour? We all had our feet amputated. Who has the worst tour bus habit? Me. I have this habit of breathing every few seconds and, apparently, its quite annoying to everyone. They’ve been very adamant about me giving it up for 25 years now. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve been asked in an interview? ”Who has the biggest feet in the band?”-see above If you were a crisp (chips) flavour, what flavour would you be? Vodka. Who would win in a fight, Skid Row or Ugly Kid Joe? Please specify what type of fight as we are all specialists in different areas of fight. Street fight? Knife fight? Sword fight? Rob Halford’s Fight? Why should we come see you on the UK tour? This will be my last tour. After this I am pursuing my life-long passion: Professional Backyard Wrestling!!

Well it may be a mission to get to and from and it may have rained on us quite a bit but this year’s Bestival certainly cemented Rob & Josie Da Bank’s annual fiesta into our festival calendar. The Isle of Wight based festival reached its 10 year anniversary this year and celebrated with a huge nautical themed party. Potential Bestival-goers take note: Bestivalians take their fancy dress seriously and the Saturday was awash with sea-creatures, mermen, lighthouses, Titanic characters, castaways, sh finger sandwiches and even Ursula the Sea Witch! Very much feeling like Glastonbury’s little brother, Bestival encompasses all that is right with the UK’s festival scene – an eclectic line up; the opportunity to party non-stop or tuck yourself into a secret spot for a workshop or acoustic jam and most importantly an over-arching sense of FUN. The artistic touches make the experience more enchanting and the sense of adventure as you discover a cinema in the trees or a bloomin’ great ship round the corner ensures there’s never a dull moment. We will certainly be setting sail on the good ship Bestival again next year! ZAN LAWTHER
Over the last weekend in August, around 3,000 fans of experimental music gathered on a small farm just outside Bristol for the inaugural Arc Tan Gent festival. With more than 80 acts playing on four stages over the Friday and Saturday, plus a single stage for early birds on the Thursday, there was plenty on offer for those who like their music a little left-field. The alternating stage times gave revellers the opportunity to watch as many bands as possible, and people literally running between stages was a common occurrence. The fans were well rewarded for their efforts. A fan-voted set from rising instrumentalists Maybeshewill and alt-metal legends earthtone9 playing the majority of the seminal album that gave its name to the festival were among the more exclusive treats on offer. My other highlights from the eclectic bill included the squalling hardcore and boundless energy of Baby Godzilla, a majestic and beautiful audio-visual extravaganza from post-rock duo Nordic Giants, expansive post-metal from Bossk, Three Trapped Tiger’s glitch, angular electrorock and an exuberant set from And Celebrating its 18th year in 2013 it’s easy to see how So I Watch You From Afar.
this micro-festival has managed to achieve its coming of The organisers of Arc Tan Gent age milestone. The support from the local community for this event is palpable and even the questionable weather spotted a gap in the festival market and filled it with aplomb. It didn’t dampen the spirits. Showcasing some of Bournewas a well-run, friendly, uncorporate mouth’s strongest homegrown talent as well as nationally weekend for open-minded fans of recognised headliners and a smattering of Boscombe’s most unconventional music. I can only eccentric characters, as ‘tourists’ we felt wholly accepted into hope it becomes a fixture in the festithe fold and will certainly be returning next year. val calendar for years to come. FESTIVAL ROUND UP
FEATURE Saturday 14th September marked another successful year for Butserfest, East Hampshire District Council’s all ages, ‘drugs free’ music event. A collection of some of the UK’s best up and coming rock, pop and alternative rock bands wowed the 1400 attendees. Add in some free activities, including a giant inflatable lazer quest, band signings and exclusive intimate backstage acoustic sets throughout the day, along with 10 hours of extensive live streaming provided and produced by Southampton Solent University, and it’s safe to say that Butserfest is a unique festival experience for all ages and music tastes.
MARIANNE HARRIS
A mild and dry day and decent attendance levels meant that this year’s SO:FEST in Guildhall Square stepped up a gear. With cocktails from Mango Thai Tapas bar, the Frog & Parrot hosting the spoken word element of the day and The Cellar featuring an outdoor dub/dance stage we enjoyed performances from headliner Ben Goddard, local lads Welcome Pariah and audience tambourine participation (courtesy of the talented Maisie) with Lost Souls Club on the main stage. Let’s hope this event continues to grow and Southampton get behind it even more in 2014! Southsea fest has been slowly growing and gaining in reputation over the last few years and 2013 was the year it finally came of age. A heady mix of hipsters, musicians, gig goers and the curious descend on Albert Road for the seventh time to check out the crème de la crème of the Hampshire scene mixed with hyped bands from further along the coast and London.
ZAN LAWTHER
From Heavy Metal in a social club to acoustic loveliness in a little café, it’s impossible not to find something to love at Southsea Fest. Highlights included MT’s triumphant set at the Wedge, AK/DK’s unique Battles beating up the Mario Brothers take on everything that’s amazing about music ever, and young Floella Garace’s emotion packed headline set at Magick Bean.
DAVE DWYER
Beautiful Days does exactly what it says on the tin. I frequent around 5 or 6 festivals every Summer & BD would be my favourite even if I didn’t care for any acts on the lineup! The combination of the atmosphere, lovely location, friendliness & of course the brilliant ale & food options really do it for me. From an artist’s perspective, I’ve always been treated superbly & professionally too. Created by The Levellers (splendid gentlemen) for all the right reasons, easily the most fun you can have in a field! I’d go even if I wasn’t playing & that’s a rarity for me these days!

It’s been an incredible year for the dynamic UK six-piece with a new US label and major supports with huge names like Bruce Springsteen and Muse. Noisy, Norwegian alternative rock trio
Dark and angular, at times downright bluesy and at other times dipping a toe into thrash it’s certainly a big noise that comes out of this Oslo based trio, riot music for the 21st Century. This will be one of those shows you will tell your pals you were at when Deathcrush are playing stadiums. FOR FANS OF: BAND OF SKULLS / SONIC YOUTH / THE BREEDERS
Happy Singalong Pop Rock

It’s hard to believe that ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ is now 13 years old but Wheatus have stood the test of time and despite numerous changes within the band, their unmistakable sound remains as fresh and bouncy as it was back in 2000. Upbeat and carefree, Wheatus both old and new will have you grinning from ear to ear! Support comes from MC Lars.
MG & THE JUGGERNAUT

AKALA
Nov 28 | The Cellar
Not your average hip hopper
At first glance, Akala is straight outta hip hop central casting but scratch the surface and you will discover a glorious mixture of electro-funk keyboards vs metal riffs vs classical piano that attempts to break down the culture of cliché and stereotype that smothers the genre. Edutainment is the name of the game and Akala strives to communicate effectively with young people and encourage people to dig a little deeper. FOR FANS OF: KANO / LETHAL B / BASHY

GIANTS
October 7
Positive punk/hardcore from Essex
This quintet play a stern cocktail of fast modern day melodic hardcore with a twist of 90’s era skater punk. With a strong DIY ethic the band have toured the UK & Europe relentlessly since their inception in 2009, supporting bands such as The Ghost Inside, Deez Nuts, Break Even and recently H2O, Comeback Kid, Evergreen Terrace and The Adolescents. FOR FANS OF: GALLOWS / CANCER BATS / RISE AGAINST
UK Ska Punk Stalwarts
THE JB CONSPIRACY
Fusing influences from some of their favourite bands with their own style . Shows with the likes of Reel Big Fish, Capdown , Sonic Boom Six, Less Than Jake, Rancid & Streetlight Manifesto has seen them polish their legendary live show giving them a reputation for inciting a crowd of skankers wherever they go.
October 10
FOR FANS OF: REEL BIG FISH / STREETLIGHT MANIFESTO / LESS THAN JAKE
CIRCLES
October 14
Australian Melodic Metal
An amalgamation of seasoned players with a strong passion for music and a desire to push the boundaries of the conventional metal sound, this 5 piece progressive metal act from Melbourne fuse cutting edge production techniques with some altogether killer guitar work and a layered vocal delivery. FOR FANS OF: DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN / MONUMENTS / KARNIVOOL / THE SAFETY FIRE
Barely legal and already seasoned pros!
CYTOTA
FOR FANS OF: ATTENTION THIEVES / SURRENDER THE COAST / BLITZ KIDS
October 21
‘Cytota’ have already supported the likes of ‘Funeral For A Friend’ ‘While She Sleeps’ and ‘Rise To Remain’, proving their ability to kick off a show with a bang even at the tender age of just 16. Now a little older and a little wiser they’re bringing their catchy, bouncy post-hardcore grooves to Southampton.
T-ALAN
October 31
Altogether now for a T-rexican wave!!
This band are so loud they’ve earned their dinosaur stripes. Originally named Tyrannosaurus Alan (now affectionately known as T-Alan) they have horns to blast your face, bass to rumble your feet, drums to bang your head, guitar to jangle your cockles and vocals that make you wanna shout back at them. FOR FANS OF: SONIC BOOM SIX / KING PRAWN / CAPDOWN
Quirky alt. rock with a quintessentially British twist
ANTLERED MAN
Antlered Man offer us a fusion of aggressive riff-driven guitar and delicate orchestral sounds than can be described as charmingly eccentric….or maybe just a little bit odd. However, what cannot be denied is that something about the arrangement of the spoken/sung vocals and gargantuan bass lines just, well, works. Support comes from the incredible Bovine. FOR FANS OF: MIKE PATTON / FUTURE OF THE LEFT / SYSTEM OF A DOWN
THE CATHARSIS
November 28
November 4
Thrashy, thrashy, thrash, THRASH!
Unashamedly heavy, The Catharsis attack the senses with feedbacking guitars, riffs so brittle and beats so bouncy they might break you…. or cause you to break the person next to you in the pit. The onslaught is relentless so down that can of Man Up and get involved! FOR FANS OF: NORMA JEAN/ BLACK DAHLIA MURDER

NEWS The Lost Boys, a fast-rising energetic indie-pop quartet from Southampton just announced the incredible news that they will be supporting the modfather himself, Paul Weller at his sold out show at the the legendary Hammersmith Apollo venue this October. We caught up with frontman and founder member Danial Ash to ask him how this all came about. “Paul Weller has been my idol since I was 13/14 and The Jam were the band that totally focused me a songwriter. Theychanged everything for me. Ever since my band The Lost Boys released our first EP ‘Not Arf It’s..The Lost Boys’ I immediately sent a copy off for Paul’s attention. It always seemed far more important for me to share our songs with my idol rather than say, A&R men. I knew a lot of our CD’s would no doubt end up ignored in bins or on floors of record label offices, but as a massive fan of music Paul always seemed to listen and encourage upcoming bands that he saw potential in. Word eventually got back to us that he had heard and liked the EP and he invited us down to record at his own studio for free. Naturally, we were all over the moon. I guess there’s no higher complement going than hearing that your idol who got you writing songs in the first place enjoys what you do. I don’t think I’ve stopped grinning since. We had a smashing time there and our next single ‘No Kisses’ recorded at Paul’s studio is going to be released just before the end of the year with 2 B-sides also recorded there. One track ‘Takes Me There’ also features Paul’s keyboard player ‘Andy Crofts’ on keys. Also last winter, I went to see Paul at a BBC4 Radio Maida Vale session where he spotted me in the crowd and got me up on stage to playa song to his crowd on his guitar. Again, this was another dreamlike experience and I still don’t really believe it happened. Then recently I got a message from Paul’s tour manager saying that he wanted us to support him at the Apollo in London. And wow- I couldn’t really believe my eyes. For a band that’s unsigned, without manager or promotion it feels like quite an incredible, almost unbelievable achievement. It’s the holy grail of gigs I’ve been crossing my fingers for for years and the most exciting opportunity we’ve ever been given. All of this also shows what an amazing, top man Paul really is. He’s so successful and doesn’t need to actually do any of this. But the fact he does, and that he helps and encourages and listens speaks volumes about his passion for music and his love for upcoming bands. I can’t thank him enough for giving us this amazing chance and everybody else who has helped made it possible. We appreciate how extremely lucky we are and are ready to play the best show of our lives and give it everything! “

OXJAM
FEATURE
Since his forced retirement from Superbike racing, James has pursued a full-time rock career with an all-consuming passion that has seen him collaborating with Little Angels legend Toby Jepson to write an album packed with hard rock and power ballads. He’s using the grit, determination and will to succeed that made him a double world champion to focus on pursuing his first passion in life: music. You’ve already sustained a hugely successful racing career, how did you make the transition from racing to rock music? I actually studied music and piano playing way before I was introduced to motorcycling. My Grandmother (Pam) played the piano and that’s where my love of music started. I had lessons from the age of 8 all the way up to the age of 16 when I had to unfortunately give the lessons up once I got my first world championship ride on the motorcycle circuit. But throughout my motorcycle career I had a keyboard in my motorhome and I played most days as playing was my complete get away from the high speed world of motorcycle racing and it was the only thing that stopped me from being an obsessively competitive racer!!!
What is it like building an entirely new career after having been so famous from racing? To look up at the ladder from the bottom again has been a massive life challenge for me after being at the top for so many years in my previous career and I knew there would be a transitional period for the people who supported me as a racer to accept and respect me as a musician, but with all the hard work with Toby on producing the very best we could with the album, everyone so far has been amazingly complimentary about it. Also to have had the gigs we’ve been able to perform at in our first headline tour earlier in the year including, ‘Download festival’, Supporting ‘The Little Angels’ and supporting ‘The Darkness’ has been an amazing start. We imagine your stage show is pretty dynamic, what can we expect? I couldn’t be more proud to step out on stage with the guys in the band! Zurab (Guitars), Rabea (Guitars), Dave (Bass), and William (Drums) are fantastic players. The strongest part of our show is how obvious it is to see how much we love what we do! We all love the tracks me and Toby have produced and it shows in every performance.
What’s playing on your IPod/in your car right now? Right now its Planet Rock radio as they have really championed the music and put both ‘Life is Beautiful’ and Has music always been something you’ve wanted to pursue? ‘Renegade’ straight onto their A list! I always wanted to write my own material and I wrote half a dozen ballads during my motorcycle career. From performing those songs I discovered a completely new passion for playing And finally, you work pretty hard……what’s your favoursongs of my own and that’s why writing an album was always ite thing to do on your day off? Spending time with my wife, family and friends as life is so something I knew I had to do at some point. busy for us both. Always love going back to Sheffield too and have the little joys in life where everyone in the room can Who is your biggest musical influence? Early in my playing days I loved the likes of Jools Holland and actually understand what I’m saying!! Ha. Elton John and then discovered Rock once I entered the world of motorcycling with Queen, Guns and Roses, Aerosmith and For more info visit www.toselandmusic.com Led Zeppelin etc.
Catch Toseland live at The Cellar on November 3rd
What was it like working with Toby Jepson (Little Angels) on your album? Working with Toby was one of the most amazing experiences in my life so far. I was so fortunate to have been introduced to someone who was so passionate about his art and I knew from day one that what ever came from our song writing sessions together that I would have the chance to show case myself in the best possible way with tracks that had real integrity and belief behind them. We have become fantastic friends from this experience together and he now co manages the band with Martin Tibbetts of ‘Strange world management’.

TOSELAND
ONES TO WATCH
Introduce yourself, who are you and what do you do in the band? I’m Jack Birks, I play guitar and sing. Scott Kellaway plays guitar, Taz Ghalem is on Bass and Christian Astridge hits the drums.
“When Jack Birks graces ‘Railroad’ with his initial husky whisper, his ‘weak at the knees’ observations, as penned in this absorbing southern swoon, appear overwhelmingly relevant. For Mamas Lips first output, the echo not only rings with potency and heart, it creeps further back than you might think. Warmly hummed above the lovelorn lyrics of a typically broken silhouette, the embers of the fire burn brightly through a well-travelled path where the Chess Records back catalogue rubs shoulders beat-pop cartel of the mid 60s by way of Troubadour wordplay... There’s soul in this music, and that’s an elusive vibe to contain. Any two-bit, no-charm chappie with a Stratocaster can rattle off a mediocre pop song, but to exude real soul is something unobtainable by purchase, or even desire. Through the discarded currency of experience you can hear enigma trailing in the wake of this band, and the mysticism behind ‘Railroad’ is slowly beginning to bare its worn knuckles. There’s something looming. Something important, something authentic, something real.” Dan Jones, Psychedelia South
Catch Mamas Lips at The Cellar on October 11
Tell us a bit about the band, how long have you been writing together and where did the name come from? We have been writing together for a few years now. We were in another band together before this and just carried it on when the last band ended. What is the first indelible mark music made on your life? Probably watching Paul Weller at the Albert Hall a number of years ago. I was quite young and I think it was only the second gig i’d ever been to. I undoubtedly knew at that point that playing music was all I wanted to do. In 2013 some might say it’s hard to be “original” yet more and more records are produced annually. What would you say defines modern originality in contemporary song writing? For me it’s authenticity. It’s very hard to do something completely ‘original’, I do think you can take elements from several places and make it your own. I strongly believe that you can listen to a song or a record and hear whether the artist is really passionate about what they are doing or not. Which is the problem with modern music. It’s that authenticity that so many contemporary artists lack in abundance, and that creativity is being drained out of artists who are forced to conform and ride the waves of the modern charts. How important to you as an artist is the live performance? Extremely. It’s all or nothing. It doesn’t matter to me how good a bands recording is, if you can’t convincingly and consistently deliver exciting live material then it’s the end of the road. What band would feature on your dream gig line up and why? I would love to see ‘Little Feat’ live. Back when Lowell George was alive in the 70’s. He was an electric front man and an amazing musician, backed by an amazing band. One of the best ever for me. Was anyone in the band taught music in school/college or was it a case of an older brother handing down an old instrument? None of us have direct influence from older siblings and parents when it came to playing instruments as far is i’m aware. A few of us studied music in school, then a couple of us went on to college and studied Popular Music. I went on to University to study Music Performance, and am now paying the price!
