FEATURE T O N S O U T H A M P

IC S U M EXCLUSIVE 2013 has been a busy year for British 5 piece Brother & Bones; two headline tours, a new EP, a summer packed full of festival shows and their first venture over to the USA. Next month they’re coming to stay with us on the south coast for gigs in Southampton, Portsmouth & Bournemouth so we thought we’d catch up with them and see what they’ve got in store for us. So, the new EP is due out imminently, what can we expect? Rich: Yeah, the new EP is out in Autumn. We’re really proud of it. It was recorded in a studio in Wales which was a really good experience for us as it was the first time we’ve had the right space, especially for recording drums, where we can record live but still have a good, roomy sound that’s really natural. We’ve produced it ourselves too so there’s a lot of our personality in there. There’s definitely some big, epic moments as well as some really intimate moments with a live track that we did which is just piano and a stripped back arrangement so there’s a bit of everything in there. We know your live shows are pretty special, how do you manage to capture that in a recording? Yiannis: This is the dilemma we’ve been having. In the past what we’ve done is try and replicate what we’ve done live on record but I think it’s transpired that’s actually a lot harder to do because you’re never going to capture exactly what you do live on a record…because it’s a record. So with this recording we’ve been using different textures and trying to think of it as two different entities; live and recording and take it to the next level with experimenting and trying new things. You’re very much a self-made band, having achieved so much already through your own determination, how did you get started and how did the band come together as a unit? Rich: I suppose we started how a lot of bands started. I’ve known Rob for years and years; we’ve played music together a lot. I knew James for years from him playing in a rock band, watching him play guitar in the same venues and then I got introduced to Yiannis and Si through mutual friends. James: It was quite natural wasn’t it, really? We got together, it worked well live so it kind of grew from there. It became much more of a business or much more of a reality when we actually started doing gigs together…. Robin: We’re a business?

What? We’re a business?

James: Well, you know, the fact that we thought, actually this works quite well, let’s take it seriously, rather than just for fun. Yiannis: And the fact that we’ve got to where we are just by hard grafting ourselves means we have had to treat it like a bit of a business in a way, where everyone’s got their roles... James does everything!

SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | SEPTEMBER 2013

FEATURE It’s been a pretty hectic summer, full of festivals – any particular highlights or stand out favourites? Si: Yeah, this summer we went to Ride Festival in Colorado, which was 10,000ft up in the mountains. Beautiful scenery – we got invited out there and it was a fantastic experience for us all. Is America somewhere you want more experience of? All: Yeah! Rich: Definitely, it was amazing. The fact that we were out there in the first place was due to complete luck that the festival organiser found us on YouTube. So to be the only British band on the line up and to play with some real legends was incredible. We got to meet quite a few people and everyone was really humble and really welcoming. So we saw some great music and just had a ball! James: I think it was really great playing in America as, no questions asked they seemed to get our style of music. It was amazing to go somewhere fresh for the first time and get that kind of reception. So definitely from that experience, we’re all massively keen to get back out to America. What’s your ultimate show goal? The one that marks the ‘yeah, we’ve made it’ point? Yiannis: Glastonbury, gotta be, hasn’t it? Rich: Yeah, Glastonbury. You can’t NOT want to play Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, that’s just impossible. Big stages work really well for us so Coachella, Benicassim, Glasto; they’re all the ones we want to go and play because it would be amazing. James: With regards to venues, we’ve always talked about Jools Holland. I think that really would mark it, I suppose more for music lovers and critics and ourselves…..just to be asked. Yiannis: I think that when you’re in that position where you’ve got a room full of 10,000 people or whatever and you know that they’re there to see you…. I think, for me that would be a massive changing point. Rich: As for support, if Zeppelin ever did another reunion gig, imagine getting the support on that show. I think I’d have a meltdown! James: Can you imagine?!? I think that would probably be the only time we’d ever get stage fright! Rich: I would be sh**ting myself. Are there plans for a full length album soon? Rich: No. We don’t do albums. We ONLY do EP’s. We have 99 EP’s ready to come now. You can have them one by one. One per year!! (ha ha) Robin: This EP, if it comes out the way we think it’s going to come out it will definitely speed up that process so I don’t think it’s going to be too long, given that this is the blueprint to how we want to approach it. Finally, tell our readers who you are and what it would say on your headstone? Rich Thomas (vocals & acoustic guitar) – Pasty Pits Jesus…..an old soul James Willard (backing vocals & electric guitar) – Disney Rock God Si Robinson (backing vocals & bass) – Wet Blanket with a wild side Robin Howell-Sprent (drums/percussion) – Noddy aka Silent Bob. The one you hear the most about….. Yiannis Sachinis (drum kit) – Cookie Monster aka Yes Chef. Seriously, try his food…

FESTIVAL ROUND UP

Southampton Music took up the challenge to attend as many festivals as possible this summer! Here are our Festival Round Up reviews!

Blissfields just goes from strength to strength, each year improving on the last, with a cracking line up this year, nicely catching Bastille on their meteoric rise to stardom, a sell looked almost inevitable. Glorious weather, great organisation and lovely people is the order of the weekend. The site is just small enough to be able to get from place to place in seconds but just big enough, with enough nooks and crannies to have a bit of an adventure after say, a few jugs of Pimms. It feels a little odd leaving on the Sunday morning (it finishes on Saturday night) and as we skulk off to the Winchester Hat Fair to eek out a little more festival buzz I can’t help but wish we had another day. KAI HARRIS I have been meaning to visit Camp Bestival for years, I was only able to make it down for one day but, armed with my trusty 5 year old side-kick, we headed to Lulworth Castle to see just how much we could cram into 8 hours. The answer was, quite a lot indeed. Although we caught a bit of Dan Le Sac vs Scroobious Pip, Labrinth and DJ Fresh the music seemed somehow secondary to the multitude of hands on activities and places to explore, had we arrived sooner we could have signed up for one of a number of workshops run by performers and learned how to dance, juggle or even make instruments out of vegetables. This festival is most definitely aimed squarely at families with children, indeed I would have felt most uncomfortable engaging in the level of er, refreshment that I normally attain at a festival but since I had my son with me this was not a problem. A very happy day was had watching the motorbikes roar round the wall of death and enjoying an indeterminate and wallet destroying number of rides on the helter skelter. Just as it looked like the nipper had finally run out of steam we’re treated to an finalé featuring a light show and projections right onto the castle itself with a cracking good firework display to finish. I can’t wait to go for the whole weekend next year. I’ll leave it to my son to sum up in one word... ‘AWESOME!’ KAI HARRIS

SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | SEPTEMBER 2013

Nestled in amongst the Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose in Portsmouth, Victorious Festival features an eclectic line up to suit all tastes and and ages with plenty to keep the kids occupied too, including entry to the aforementioned historic ships thrown in to the frankly paltry £15 entry fee. It seemed as though the success of the event may have even taken the organisers a little by surprise as a couple more bars and a few more portaloos wouldn’t have gone amiss but all in all a great event and incredible value for money. KAI HARRIS

REVIEWS It’s a glorious, hot day for this little homegrown one-dayer nestled in playing fields just outside the sleepy town of Alresford in Hampshire. No huge distances to cover on site here, everything you need is within arms-reach be that a hearty snack, a pint of scrumpy or a huge inflatable slide if you’ve brought the kids (or not, there were plenty of grown ups partaking). Both stages are right next to each other so most of the attendees opted to pick a spot, stick out some chairs and camp out for the day. No big name artists here but that’s not to say there’s not a lot of quality music on offer. All in all a well organised and good value little family all dayer. KAI HARRIS

Southampton’s Seán McGowan made his début at Glastonbury Festival in June on not one but five different stages at the Somerset bash. Starting with a packed crowd at celebrity hangout, The Rabbit Hole, and finishing with a guest slot on the Leftfield stage singing ‘Rock the Casbah’ with Billy Bragg, Kate Nash and Sam Duckworth, Seán certainly left an impression that should see him cement a place as a regular fixture at Pilton. The Rolling Stones also made their début and, although the likeliness of them returning is pretty unlikely, Mick Jagger and co put in a performance that will go down in legend. Glastonbury is a festival that truly caters for everybody; we met a lady called Jean, in her 80’s, selling merch for Strummerville, who had been coming since day one and she said she had no intention of stopping any time soon. We asked Jean what her favourite part was. “It’s simple”, she said, “it’s the people what make Glastonbury such a special place. There’s somebody from every walk of life here, and they’re all so friendly. I’m already looking forward to next year”. JODIE COPELAND

Leopallooza is one of those festivals you wish you’d discovered years ago. Upon first arrival it looks like dozens of clone festivals but scratch beneath the surface and it soon becomes very evident that this is a grass roots, independent event born and nurtured from a passion for music. Hand painted signs, permanent wooden stages and tree house type sound booths, and sofas littered around an entire vip campus that make you feel a bit like you’re on Scout camp. And a great line up that supports up and coming artists to boot. Definitely one to be looking up for 2014. MARIANNE HARRIS NASS is a weekend mash up of action sports, live music and dubstep arenas. It’s the UK’s only professional action sport and music festival, and from years of previous attendance, a darn good weekend. This year the live music was dumbed down a little, understandable as it’s the late night DJ sets that are the popular music element here traditionally, but watching great bands like Kids in Glass Houses and Katy B play to an almost threadbare audience is not only a little disheartening but does beggar the question of ‘why bother?’ Great festival that possibly needs to reassess the music element for 2014. MARIANNE HARRIS

This year, Mumford & Sons ‘Gentlemen of the Road’ Stopover festival popped up in Lewes. Hosted by the band themselves (and featuring a monster headline set from them to close the Saturday night), this touring festival encompasses new, breakthrough and stalwart acts hand-picked by Mumford & Sons. We couldn’t imagine a more relaxing weekend - and with the tidiest and most polite festival-goers we’ve ever met! – one stage, a generous helping of bars and an abundance of food stalls and all in the heart of beautiful Lewes. All we want to know is where will it be next year!?! ZAN LAWTHER

Stashed away in the rolling countryside just outside Redhill in Surrey this may just be the UK’s best kept festival secret. At just 5,000 capacity Redfest is perfect for the younger festival goer to cut their teeth on. One site, two main stages (the Blackstar ‘main’ stage played host to the lighter end of the rock scale with the Hype Stage an out and out metal-fest) and the Boiler Room’s smaller acoustic tent in the middle. We ate great food, supped tasty beverages and heartily accepted the challenge of swapping between hardcore and folk, circle pits and sofas. We will certainly be back next year, roll on Redfest 2014!! ZAN LAWTHER

Glorious weather sets the tone again, this time for a slightly more mature festival, apart from the obligatory fairground ride, a solar powered cinema and an excellent homemade ‘arcade’ (including a bum slapping game and ‘Space Invaders’ controlled by an old push bike - no seriously!) this one is family friendly but largely for the grown ups. With a wide range of artists mainly drawing from a folk and heritage background you won’t find any mosh pits at Wickham. Quality turns from The Waterboys, 10cc and Seth Lakeman and a particularly poignant performance from Wilko Johnson leave us wondering how Wickham will top this next year. KAI HARRIS

To say we were excited about our trip to BoomTown was an understatement. As BoomTown virgins we were intrigued by the complexity of the site and how the organisers piece together this strange and magical land. Encompassing all the craziest bits of Glastonbury yet keeping the capacity to a modest 30,000; BoomTown is nestled in the rolling countryside just outside Winchester - and when we say rolling, we mean rolling, with several steep climbs to get between ‘districts’ (one of which hosts an ingenious travelator-style ski lift) and some serious inclines in the camping areas. Having said that, the first thing we were thoroughly impressed by was the generous space available for camping. Campers can choose to pitch up in amongst the mayhem of the various towns within the site, or retreat to the slightly quieter ‘suburbs’ on the outskirts. BoomTown Fair is certainly not for the fainthearted – if you want to party, non-stop, for four days straight then THIS IS THE FESTIVAL FOR YOU. If you want your senses battered from all directions by weird, wonderful, at times beautiful and at other times brilliantly terrifying sights and sounds then go, pull on your fanciful costume, douse yourself in glitter and set yourself free amongst the madness. If, however, you like a little more order with your chaos and want to religiously hop between stages seeing specific bands at set times and you like having a firm grasp of your bearings (and marbles), we would suggest that BoomTown is probably not for you. Line ups and stage times changed repeatedly, we couldn’t find a programme and most of the stages don’t have names or listings but that is all part of the laid back beauty of BoomTown – just dive in head first and give yourself over to the festival itself. The sheer amount of effort from the organisers, volunteers, acts, entertainers and punters is what comes together to make BoomTown the full on sensory explosion it is. If you’re not in fancy dress, then why on earth not?? There’s a theme for everyone as the entire festival is a tangling maze of districts such as ChinaTown, Barrioloco and Mayfair. During the day BoomTown is full of chilled out vibes and relaxed grooves and there’s a surprise around every corner (the Lion’s Den – a full on Aztec temple built into the woods was one of our favourite finds) but it’s at night that the party really kicks into high gear. The explosion (and yes, we literally mean EXPLOSION) of Arcadia is worth the ticket price alone. Each night you can party till the small hours to the hard trance and huge beats blasting out of Arcadia, under the watchful eyes of an enormous fire breathing mechanical spider.

We emerged on the other side our BoomTown experience battered, disorientated and exhausted. We couldn’t tell you who we saw or when but we had a fantastic time trying to soak it all up and explore everything. Think it all sounds too bizarre and ridiculous to be true? Well, you’ll have to get tickets for next year’s festival and see for yourself! ZAN LAWTHER

PREVIEWS LIVE_TRANSMISSION - JOY DIVISION REWORKED

An electro-orchestral reinterpretation of one of the UK’s most influential bands, Joy Division. Live_Transmission is a totally unique audio-visual collaboration between electronic music pioneer Scanner, the restlessly inventive Heritage Orchestra, and exploratory visual artist Matt Watkins. This sonic and visual spectacle turns the tables on the conventional concert experience.

SCHOLARS

Well crafted, bouncy rock is the order of the day from Hemel Hempstead born Scholars. New album ‘Always Lead, Never Follow’ brings all the energy from their live shows to your stereo. Confident and effective use of sampling and electronica mixed with lively rhythms is sure to have you pogo-ing, whether at one of their gigs or in your lounge. Oct 13 | The Joiners

Bristolian electro rockers set to take OFF

We were bowled over by The Ramona Flowers when we caught them supporting Bastille earlier this year. Combining elements of both rock and electro but not quite fitting into the traditional electro-rock mould, get in to see these guys now and expect them all over the festival season in 2014! FOR FANS OF: BASTILLE / HAIM / U2 / MSMR

Atmospheric, poignant and HEAVY

Crushingly heavy, darkly atmospheric, emotionally poignant, and never less than utterly enthralling, Devil Sold His Soul combine devastating force and haunting melody in a unique and involving blend that is as hypnotic as it is moving. Frankly, we can’t wait for the powerhouse tour combining DSHS with German deathcore band We Butter the Bread with Butter and the mighty Palm Reader. FOR FANS OF: ARCHITECTS / LETLIVE / HEIGHTS / ISIS / TOOL

DEVIL SOLD HIS SOUL

BLOOD ON THE DANCEFLOOR Love ‘em or hate ‘em, it’s going to be a hell of a party! According to BOTDF they’re one act that will scar your mind and with songs like electro pop anthems ‘Sexting’ and ‘Scream for my Ice Cream’ you can kind of see their point. Their music is a mash up of computer theme/ringtone electro combined with lyrics the likes of which The Bloodhound Gang would be proud of but with a smattering of gangsta rap and hardcore.

PREVIEWS KOBRA & THE LOTUS

Nov 7 | The Joiners

Female fronted Canadian heavy metal

Unashamedly holding aloft the torch of old skool and forging their way into a new era of ‘proper’ heavy metal. With vocal skills that rival many of her male counterparts, front woman Brittany Paige is leading the way for kick ass girls and when combined with chunky, pounding riffs that make you want to assume the ultimate head banging position, we just can’t wait to see their live show. FOR FANS OF: IRON MAIDEN / JETTBLACK / VOODOO SIX

Shining the light for the UK rock scene uprising

This is the year for the post-hardcore pop punk rock revolution and Mallory Knox are spearheading the movement. They blew us away at Takedown 2013 earlier this year and their star continues to rise. Accessible and upbeat tunes aplenty make up 2012’s smash hit album ‘Signals’ – you can’t help but bounce along and are humming the songs before you know you know them. American groove metal kings

Not satisfied with anything other than pushing themselves to the absolute limit of their abilities, Lamb of God consistently produce recorded work that shows how diverse, articulate and pummelling metal can be. Expect the immense shredding of guitars, searing and crunchy vocals and be prepared to mosh... hard. See you in the pit! FOR FANS OF: PANTERA / MACHINE HEAD / TRIVIUM

Loud, heavy and raucous – get ready to BOUNCE!

Jan 23 | Mo’ Club

A long-time favourite at Southampton Music HQ, new album ‘Kill the Power’ is hotly anticipated and if recent release ‘Ninja’ is anything to go by, it’s going to be worth the wait! Heavy riffs and crazy beats, topped with the unique ragga-metal vocal stylings of frontman Benji Webbe if you’re lucky enough to catch Skindred live on their forthcoming tour…..expect to get SWEATY!!

BOXER REBELLION

Feb 3 | The Brook

Moody and atmospheric indie with soul

Hailing from all corners of the globe, American Nathan Nicholson, Australian Todd Howe and Englishmen Adam Harrison and Piers Hewitt came together in 2001 through a combined passion for escapist music. What we get today from ‘The Boxers’ is a mixture of bass-heavy grooves and indie rock sounds that is both brooding and crisp. FOR FANS OF: EDITORS / THE JOY FORMIDABLE / ATHLETE

ONES TO WATCH

Introduce yourselves – who are you and what do you do in the band? Well...... we’re five fifths of Dead!, just some guys from Southampton who do all the things in the band.

From the word go Dead! have been gunning for world domination. Winning a battle of the bands on their very first show back in 2012 earned them an oportunity to open the mainstage at Takedown Festival for the likes of Deaf Havana, Lower Than Atlantis, Don Broco and Skindred, the band have managed to rack up over 50 gigs since forming in February 2012. A strong DIY work ethic pushed the release of their debut EP, selling out of the initial limited edition run within two weeks, as well as a supporting ten date national tour reaching up to the tip of Scotland. Keep your eye on these lads, we’re expecting big things.

If you had to create a genre name for your music, what would it be? One word - Apopalyptic. Who or what gave you your first musical inspiration? We were all lucky enough to grow up around loads of music from friends and family. Theres a huge dose of the classic rockers in us (Bowie, Roger Daltry, The Clash) aswell as some weirder stuff, mix that with the first moment you see a band you love exploding onto a stage and its pretty awe inspiring. If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would you choose? It’d have to be Jay-Z, just because we play a better version of 99 problems than him. We could do a covers split release! What’s your favourite midnight snack? More caffeine. What’s playing on your Ipod/in your car stereo RIGHT NOW? There was far too much Bon Jovi and dodgy radio on our last trip back from Scotland, but Brand New’s ‘The Devil and God’ has been on in the living room for a while now, the new letlive. record is dominating too. What makes playing a hometown gig so special? Not having to wake up so early! Our last hometown show headlining the Talking Heads was just an incredible moment, to see that kind of support. This is where it all started, so these are the fans that have been in it almost as long as us. Why should we come and check out your live show? A lot of bands say it but we can 100% guarantee blood, sweat, tears and at least 1 broken bone. Just look at our track record..... ZAN LAWTHER
