COLLIDE
juana alvarez I found Little, Love & Happiness when I started my initial search to find inspiration. Little, Love & Happiness is a store in Australia that creates all sorts of design objects and decor. The typography and print texture is what initially drew me to these particular prints (far right). The work turned out to be a rebrand for the company, the designer, Juana Alvarez uses specifically print techniques along with her own illustrations. These illustrations have been useful in helping me narrow down what illustraion style I want to use for this brief.

Instead of doing this all by hand I intend on creating the type and imagery seperately then digitising them to create the finished product.

The typography will be a lyric or a quote that strikes a chord, the quote might be even something I said as a child.

Paula Scher and Alison Hardcastle are designers whose work i’ve constantly looked at throughout the years. It was when looking at their work that I decided on doing something similar to their technique except the opposite, where I would make typography out of a collection of imagery that means something to me personally.

Both these companys have done something similar to what I want to create for this brief. The Best of Brixton print by Lucy loves this is closest to my idea where i want to use the imagery to form the lettering.

SOUNDS SMELLs VISUAL
For this project I want to use medium and technique I enjoy doing, however making it more challenging. In the project I’m going to do a set of typography designs that reflect on memories and quotes that are personal to me and my family. I initially thought about creating posters, a photo book detailing the process of the final creations and a video to go with the book, however it makes more sense to do a book that holds all my final works in it and a video to accompany that which saves time in the long run and gives a well rounded substance for the final outcome. I want to give more than just a 2d view to the audience I want to also incorporate sound into my work. I hope this projects enhances my video and sound editing skills, having never done much work with either it will be testing to get to the work to a high quality finish for the deadline.

BOOK LAYOUT This is an quick sketch for a book I was going to do as a final outcome for my work. However I feel that the final piece is better viewed as a series of posters. This book was going to include a chapter on the making of my work which includes images I took throughout the process, the images can be seen on the next page.
Icons Sounds, Memories, Feelings and Tastes that I like and that make me happy
This was a very fun brief to do, I wanted to do something that I enjoyed and yet challanged me, doing something with this intricate was a very difficult process, so much that I transferred to creating things digitally early on in the process just to speed up my work process. This projects has evolved from a collection of songs lyrics that play with iconography to simply a poster with the word happiness being made from the fun imagery. I have looked into the icons a lot more, eventually leading me being able to combine my idea of the sound recordings with the imagery with the outcome being a digital book.
Words Memories, sounds that I like and words that make other people happy
COLOUR When first originally thinking of colour for my happiness project I instantly thought of orange, not because it is my favourite colour or that because it was a colour I preferred at the time, it was because of my previous research into colour theory and psychology that I chose orange. Orange is a colour that is extremely stimulating in the brain. I went for an orange with a yellow tone to it, which is another colour which has a strong impact on the brain. Both Yellow and Orange work to stimulate emotion and give a sense of warmth and safety which is what i hope comes across in the work. For me it was the perfect colour to help viewers visulise what theme and subject I wanted to give across without them actually reading the word Happiness.
This is one of the covers I was originally envisioning for the book however, it would work far better on a physical book than a digital one, I would prefer one that plays around with the original project concept more.
This cover is perfect for my digital book, it keeps the minimalist text from the first idea yet incorporates the original artwork so it ties both pieces together, I definately didn’t want the outcomes to have a disjointed and out of place feel.
I didn’t expect to like this idea at all I created this cutout paper technique when experimenting with the idea of a lasercut piece. The happiness title doesn’t need to be at the bottom these both feel like end pages to the book.
This is another of my original ideas, the intention of the cut out was so the cover would allow look into the first page, again this is more of a cover that would work more effectively on a physical book.
Presentation Ideas My original thoughts when planning to present my work in the collide show was to create a large wall mural with just the word happiness, this would have been very interesting from a psychological point of view to see how viewers would respond to the piece if presented with a large scale piece of design that is specifically made to create and give off a vibe of happiness. However working as a member of the curating team for the show we quickly discovered the restrictions of the show. Leading to my next idea becoming a lot smaller and managable. The idea was to create an interactive piece, printing the happiness illustration on sticker paper and letting the viewers take home some version of happiness. Unfortunately there wasn’t the right material and machine available in the size I wanted which meant that after I printed I would have to cut carefully around each icon and letter by hand with a craft knife. In the end we decided to keep it simple with the submissions for the collide show, I created a A1 poster which would be accompanied by the animated book I made. This was a better outcome which was more coast effective in the long run, it showed off more of my skills and would last long enough for the week long show.
