Conversation
noun
The imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium. Means of sending or receiving information, such as telephone lines or computers.
Camilla Adamowicz Artist These sketches by Camilla Adamowicz are extremely detailed in comparision of the art style I was going to do for my response to the brief. This style is too detailed to use in a quick animation but this could be used in a set of posters or a book. I like the way she simply incorporates the type with the image and even layers her drawing on top of the text adding context to the image.
Tommy Perez Designer Tommy Perez created an edible alphabet to help his daughter remember the whole alphabet. The alphabet uses a very interesting medium which is something I could use this to explain the voice recordings words when creating my piece.
Adam Patch Animator
Adam patch recorded his wife telling a joke while drunk and decided to make it into a short animation. This is the biggest inspiration for this brief. I would like to incorporate sound over my work if I create an animated piece. Instead of animating characters i’ll create my own type to animate.
Snickers City Project Typographer, Graphic Designer
Snickers created a clever advertisement campaign in which they place their advertisement next to objects with bad placement. One of my ideas for this brief is to create badly placed advertisements on packaging. Without having the restriction of a brand I could create wildly different designs for each advertisement.
Gemma Correll Illustrator
I love the simplicity of the illustrations in this print. The design looks to have been first created with a fine liners but then transformed into a screen print so all of the image’s ink is even in colour and so it speeds up production process. I want to create something similar to this piece and use the illustration to show how the mind wanders when the person listening is missing some context of the conversation.
Alison Hardcastle Typographer, Graphic Designer
I had the opportunity to meet with designer Alison Hardcastle during my time at college, while I was with her she showed me her final designs for her typographic illustration of the UK. All of my ideas have typography as their main focus. Instead of using imagery to create the type it might work better if I choose to animate with my own type, that way if I wanted quickly get the dialogue across the screen it would be easier for the audience to read.
ONLINE
SPEECH TREE
For this idea i would collect a lot of old letters and stamps to create some sort of story book illustrations which create stories of the letters I have found. This is quite an open idea which could work with many other concepts over time. My research into context could combine with this quite easily which could create illustrations or typography from letters which use slang or terms people don’t understand.
This concept would blend a lot with the idea before because i thought of mapping the conversations of people online and looking into how speaking with emojis has evovled into what it is now. It would be particularly interestings to be able to visually create something to show the differences between generations and the way the contact others online, especially finding out when they started to get involved more with the emoticons online.
When recording conversations for research i became facinated with the constant back and forth conversation in a large group of people, there were a lot of conversations between two sets of people which some others managed to hear and they incorporated it into their own topic. This process is want i want to record visually on the page.
CONTEXT I have a lot of ideas for this theme manly focusing on the concept of dialect and slang and they way outsiders of the town or city can’t understand it. I want the outcome for these ideas to be either as a set of illustrated posters or as an animation. An animation would work better as illustrations as it would work perfectly timed to a voice recording which would keep the audience engaged and entertained. The idea of an animation with a recording in the background has been greatly inspired by the short animation of Adam Patch, I hope it can reflect the same upbeat feel of his work.
ADVERTISE TRANSLATE Whilst doing my artist research for this project I came across an old ad campaign created by Snickers to promote their brand and their slogan. These advertisements were placed with the in areas not many people would look at but when viewed in more detail you would see that these everyday placements were problematic. This got me thinking about bad advertisement placements and how I could make a set of fake product nets to hilight the issue of not only innapropriate placements but the buyer’s tendancy to not view product packaging before buying.
This idea also has a link to context after looking at the way people are unable to understand slang and dialect in countrys with their own language, I thought more into other people who didn’t speak a certain language. I did a project in the past where I found idioms from other countries and ran them through google translate to give and odd translation and a totally different and sometimes confusing meaning to the text. This would branch more out and look into movie translations and language programs and i would illustrate the
Context
I have been looking at different types of communication, from the way we communicate with family compared with other people to communication through social media and through advertisement. After brainstorming ideas for this project I found that most of my ideas were heavily focussed on the idea of context and how things such as dialect and accent can confuse the listener, making their mind wonder and imagine a whole other conversation. The main concept ideas I will be focussing on are: Yorkshire Dialect in the form of a Book or a set of Posters. Motion Graphic piece on dialect soundtrack in the background.

Pop up mail book which is creating by me imaging what the recipient’s story is.
I liked the idea of playing around with context not only from my recorded material but also from magazines and newspapers. From the paper clippings I created words from the voice recordings. Doing this I unknowingly created an even more out of context piece of work, where these words made sense in the magazines they were now being used to create sentences that have little or no meaning to the reader.
This was a good exercise to do even if I am not going to explore the idea further because it freed up my mind to experiment with more of my original ideas. The concept was not as strong as some of my other ideas, if I was going to go further with this idea I would want to change the concept and make the outcome more challenging. This piece would also have to be strong enough an idea that I wouldn’t have to explain what the idea is.
It’s a little girl they’ve got Yeah whTwo Years?! Oh yeah Is it? Here’s Liz She liked the look of it that much she copied the recipe down last night
Did you know it takes 2 years for a pineapple to grow?
Well you can in juice not syrup, I always have pineapple in it anyway but EGG FRIED RICE, he did it
Can’t you put tinned pineapple in it?
Fresh pineapple in it, spring onions
Communication Tree Another idea I have been looking at focusses on the brains connections in a conversation. I’ve taken some recordings of conversations and analysed the way in which they switch to completely different conversations because the brain has seen a faint connection. This little snippet of a recording is particulary interesting because of the complexity the conversation and it’s links to different topics. During the conversation Person 2 was the lead speaker she started explaining about ingrediants for a meal. Person 2 and Person three are deeper into the conversation whereas Person 1 is driving. Throughout the recording it is not clear what they are talking about unless the audience have background information about the people, this ties into my idea of context and how important it is in a conversation. Even I had trouble remembering what the people were talking about which led my mind to drift to bizarre conclusions. There is a point in the piece (which is displayed on the left) where the group jumped to a totally different conversation because they saw someone they knew walking across the street and remembered a topic from earlier on in the day.

After transforming my designs for characters from hand-drawn to graphic image, I think I need to work on my character’s designs a bit more. The drawing style seems to change from the first page to the second, maybe because of the lack of pattern or texture in the drawing which makes the character lack depth and style continuity. In the first few drawings I have used a detailed drawing style which mimics brands products injecting a bit of humour into the animation.
This texture works really well on every part of the character, it softens the whole image and would go well with my other illustrations.
This pattern works on clothing but feels too heavy in this colour.
The paper texture on the hair drains the hair of colour giving the vector a dull colour. It has too many creases and disturbance in the hair layer.
A well as being similar to the one above, this texture adds a warm tone to the character whilst bleaching the colour in the hair.
After looking at textures on this character I saw other issues I had with this version and my original drawing vs. the image in my head. I made some slight adjustments to the head length - shortening it. The hair is also going to be this length and style throughout the animation whereas in the last sketches it seemed to vary. I left the overall shape of the eyes as I’d already experimented with them creating the digital piece in the beginning. To make the eyes any smaller or bigger would make the character look totally different than originally planned.
Attaching the head to the body has been more of an issue as it makes the head look wider, so I’ve been experimenting with different body shapes. I want to go with simple shapes like I have done with the other drawings. I have been playing around with the round shape as it will help create the idea that each character is a part of the viewer’s imagination where they characters all float around. As for the colour of the clothing I am going to keep it within the colour scheme of the original designs so it doesn’t look out of place.
After creating my animation I’ve started thinking about other materials that could go with the animation. This is a simple poster created which has been taken from the start screen of the finished clip. I would like to create this in a few screen prints which will give the poster a nice texture and make the design look less flat. It will tie in very well with my cut out font.
