The wines owe their elegance, complexity and distinctive character to the unique location of the vineyards and the almost magical extended sunlight hours just below Constantia Nek. Unlike the rest of the valley, the Nek allows extra sunlight onto the vineyards of Constantia Glen ensuring consistent ripening in this remarkably cool wine growing region. During summer, visitors can enjoy the new crisp Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc vintages which are marketed under the estate’s Constantia Saddle brand. This range is not available from any external wine merchants and can only be purchased directly from the farm.
The combination of sunny summer days, a remarkably cool climate, close proximity to the sea, altitude and the diversity of soil types, together with the loving care taken during the production process, all contribute to ensuring the production of award winning wines. Only grapes grown on the farm are used for the wines produced
at
Constantia
Glen.
The
winemakers
apply
painstaking attention to every vine, eliminating superfluous bunches by allowing only a single bunch per shoot to ripen the secret behind the extraordinary concentration of flavours in the wines. The thirty hectares of vines (80% red and 20% white grape varieties) are situated between 110 to 250 metres above sea level. Many of the thirty-one vineyard blocks are planted on sites characterised by decomposed granite sub-soils; a feature of which is their ability to impart a wonderful minerality to the wines. Each vintage grown, vinified and bottled at Constantia Glen has a unique “fingerprint”, balance and character, created by winemaker Justin van Wyk. Under the Constantia Glen label, the farm produces a Sauvignon Blanc as well as Constantia Glen Two - a Sauvignon/ Semillon Blend and two classically styled Bordeaux red blends, the Constantia Glen Three and Constantia Glen Five - named in accordance with the number of Bordeaux varieties in each blend.
A WONDERFUL PLACE TO RELAX AND RELISH AS A CAPETONIAN The facilities at Constantia Glen are excellent, the views are beautiful and the wine tasting at R30 per person (to sample four different wines) and the platters (priced from R80 to R100) are good value for money. The Cheese and Charcuterie Platter which Anita and I tucked into included: La Petit France Brie, Gorgonzola, Gruyere and Goats Cheese with homemade Rosé Grape jelly and olives. Freshly sliced prosciutto, coppa and salami served with a freshly baked baguette, smoked Rooibos Butter and fresh seasonal fruit.

We agreed that the R100 we paid for the platter (which was delicious and more than enough for the two of us to share) was very fair. As we ended up purchasing a case or two of wine, we were enrolled into the Constantia Glen Wine Club and did not have to pay for the wine tasting. This is free for members who also enjoy a 15% discount on tasting room prices. We didn’t book in advance and even though it was midweek, we were very lucky to get a table. The venue was empty when we arrived at 11h55 but by 12h15 all the tables on the stoep were occupied. I suggest that you reserve a table, especially on weekends, rather than be disappointed on arrival. The estate is open on weekdays from 10h00 to 17h00 and weekends from 10h00 to 16h00. Private functions and after hours parties can be hosted in the tasting room and the Manfred’s Legacy pool area, located on the lower area of the farm below the vineyards, is a magnificent venue for weddings and functions. Anita and I thoroughly enjoyed our few hours at Constantia Glen and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience some of South Africa’s best wines, views and hospitality. We’ll be returning there soon with our friends and family. WORLD SPORTING PHENOMENON Dawid Mocke is the personification of what many of us hope a sporting hero would be like if we ever get the opportunity to meet one in the flesh; athletic, strong, charismatic and intelligent, yet also funny, humble and very down to earth. Sadly however, Dawid, unlike the leading achievers in our major national sports, is not known to most South Africans and can certainly not be described as being a household name. This is a great shame as Dawid Mocke meets all the requirements to be a South African sporting legend.

So why is it that Dawid, having become the Surfski World Series Champion for the fourth consecutive time last year, is virtually unknown to most South Africans other than those of the paddling fraternity? It’s a good question because the man is a sporting phenomenon. I had the pleasure of meeting Dawid soon after Raymond Rix (Stonehurst Security Trustee) and I got the crazy idea that we should take up surf-skiing as a sport. Clearly ignoring the fact that we are both well beyond our best sporting years, over a beer or two at the Stonehurst pub a few weeks ago, I agreed to book the two of us onto “The Ocean ABC of Surfski Paddling” programme designed by Dawid. And

age of eleven, of his own volition, Dawid became a “Nipper” member of the Fish Hoek Surf Lifesaving Club. In his late teens Dawid began to surfski but it was not until 2002 that he decided to take part in an “Open Ocean” event. For the uninitiated, this means paddling one to two kilometres offshore and racing over twenty to thirty kilometres in the open ocean in all weather conditions. Having completed a BA Information Sciences degree with honours at Stellenbosch University, Dawid assisted a friend to develop a software business. It wasn’t long however before he and Nikki (to whom he is now married), decided to turn their hobby into a full-time job and they set up their surfski school. Nikki is a World Surfski Senior Champion (2010) in her own right and also represented South Africa in the Ladies K4 event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Apart from being his wife, Nikki is also Dawid’s coach. Dawid knows that he is extremely fortunate and blessed to have been able to turn his sporting passion into his job. In this regard he shared one of his favourite quotes with me the other day: “There is nothing greater that a man can do than to find satisfaction in the work of his hands”. In 2004 Dawid decided to pit his skills against the world’s best and went on to win his first international competition in Auckland, New Zealand. THE MOTIVATOR AND ROLE MODEL Dawid inspires children at the talks that he regularly gives at local schools. He encourages them to pursue healthy outdoor activities and through his own life story motivates them to try to be the best that they can be and to always reach for their dreams. At his surfski school, Dawid shares his passion and knowledge with anyone interested in learning to paddle, irrespective of their age, gender or ability. He does so with patience, empathy and enthusiasm. Raymond and I can testify to this as on our first lesson, he treated us old-timers with the utmost respect and understanding. Clearly relating to the fears and concerns we harboured for our first surfski experience. Following an in-depth theoretical explanation and safety drill, Dawid coaxed us into launching our crafts into what, in our minds, was a raging maelstrom of wind-tossed ocean. In our defence, the surf was being driven onshore by 25 to 30 knot winds, so we weren’t just imagining the scale of our
challenge. After thirty exhausting minutes of trying to get beyond the surf line (the “impact zone” according to Dawid’s ABC approach) and then back again, we were relieved when Dawid called us all back to shore. It had been a marvellous experience. Even though we both battled to remain in our surfskis for any length of time, we left the beach with a sense of accomplishment and an all-round good feeling. We were chuffed with our perseverance, uplifted by the experience, invigorated by a sense of camaraderie and humbled by the power of the elements. Dawid Mocke is an action man, deep thinker, proudly South African, a family man, entrepreneur, tough competitor and a very articulate communicator. He is a superb ambassador for the businesses, brands and organisations with which he is associated and which are synergistic with his lifestyle, philosophy and beliefs. Fish Hoek, or Vissers Baay or Visch Hoek, appears on the earliest maps of the Cape. The town which nestles at the eastern end of the Fish Hoek Valley is located only ten minutes away from Stonehurst Mountain Estate, via scenic Boyes Drive. Located just 32 kilometres south of Cape Town, the valley is bounded by mountains to the north and south, with False Bay to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Measuring 13 kilometres from west to east, and between 3 to 6 kilometres across from north to south, the valley is home to several rivers and wetlands.

At the age of 71, Hester married Jacob Isaac de Villiers, a local farmer. They, with other members of their family, are buried in the small graveyard next to the NG Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church) in Kommetjie Road. Hester left instructions in her will that the land be surveyed and sold as building plots. The township of Fish Hoek was laid out in 1918 when the first of Hester’s plots were sold.

TIPS • You can plant in full sun. Mine are planted in areas where the sun changes from full sun to semi shade depending on the season and have done very well. • Best time to plant is winter which will give the plant time to establish itself before the harsh dry summer – I suggest towards the end of April, early May. • Water well until established (normal gardening 101 practice for any plants), thereafter, keep well mulched and they will need little water. • Polygala myrtifolia respond well to being pruned if you prefer it to be bushier or to train it into a small tree. You can though leave it to grow naturally and it will form a very attractive tree bush. • Ideal in a new garden if you need a hedge or some sort of screening or wind break. • Stake it well while it is still establishing itself, once grown, it will tolerate the wind.

They each have a type of material which they need to pick out of the debris rolling past them. The ladies selecting the plastic containers are at the beginning, just alongside the tins, which are apparently easy to pick out. These plastic bottles, tubs and receptacles are tossed over the side of the balustrade into a pit where another conveyor pulls these up into a hopper which then compacts these into bales.

There are obviously a few other things to avoid too. Opening an umbrella is asking for trouble. Eating an ice-cream may end up with a flying snow cone hazard. Juggling any kind of sharp objects should be avoided and playing shuttlecock is not recommended. One lady who owns a trampoline is still trying to get her toddler out of a tree when he bounced one too many times. On the other hand, if you’d like to fly a kite then where could be better? There’s no conclusive research available anywhere about which is the windiest part of Cape Town. For a start you’d have to define what “windiest” actually means – strongest force, continuous gales or heavy gusts etc? However, the general consensus seems to be that Cape Point probably wins – but nobody lives there. The same goes for the airport (which is quite handy for planes taking off I suppose). The others are Camps Bay, Blouberg, Woodstock, Cape Town Harbour, Foreshore and Kommetjie. I can find no reference whatsoever to this area being windy. We don’t even make the list. Finally, consider this, Cape Town has one of the bluest skies in the world. Others in the top 5 include Rio de Janeiro, Bay of Islands, Ayers Rock and Fiji. And the reason for the remarkable blueness? The Cape Doctor blows away smog and all the other rubbish in the air which makes our skies picture-postcard-perfect. AND that same wind replaces bad air with fresh breezes from the sea – and Stonehurst is one of the first areas to get all this wonderful oxygen - making it a very healthy place to live. On the walkways around Stonehurst you can actually feel your lungs swelling with fresh air (by the time it gets to the suburbs and, even worse, the CBD it’s actually quite filthy). It’s glorious and just like one huge air-conditioner. So we’re blessed to live here – and the myth about it being too windy was started by people who are jealous, or Estate Agents, or both. The truth is that we don’t get much wind here, but when it does it comes at exactly the right time because, without it, it would be far too hot. And by the way, the reward for the return of my underwear is still valid. S

ESTATE PROJECTS BOREHOLE & DAM The dam and borehole was commissioned on 28 January 2013. There have been a few teething problems in that the new system is very unforgiving of any leaks. Previously, because the water was supplied by the Municipality and was under relatively constant pressure, if there was a leak it would not directly affect the operation of the system. However, we paid for these leaks as these would remain unnoticed and undetected until we received the meter readings each month! However, now that it is a self-contained, self-pressurising system and has to maintain a particular range of pressure to work, even a smallish leak inhibits the efficiencies and we can immediately detect a problem on the system. While this makes it a bit more work, it considerably reduces the potential for wasted water – something we consider a good thing! From commissioning to end March, a period of just two months, according to our borehole meter, just on 6000 kilolitres has run through the system. Yes, that means nearly 6 MILLION litres of water has been pumped through the system. This represents a considerable saving to the Estate, even factoring in the electricity consumption of the pumps. At the current rate, this is a saving of approximately R100 000 in two months, which would mean full recovery of the costs of the project over just 15 months, whereafter the saving represents a real saving to the Estate. With the success of this project, we would like to explore the possibility of a second borehole and dam to the West side of the Estate, and in the long term perhaps make some of this water available for residents to reduce their own irrigation costs. Fencing will be erected in April 2013 around the dam area to provide security for the equipment and safety for the residents.

LIFESTYLE CENTRE - STAFF CANTEEN The staff canteen and store area planned for the Lifestyle Centre is also progressing well and soon our complement of 9 ground staff and Lifestyle Centre support staff will have a suitable rest area. The additional, very necessary storage area will also mean that valuable equipment will be more easily protected and accessible.
Over the last year of operation, the Estate Management office has identified that a well-manned reception area to the Lifestyle Centre is growing in importance. With the increase in activities, both in the gym and in the rest of the recreational areas of the Lifestyle Centre, a well-managed comfortable entrance

lobby will make a significant difference to operations. We have proposed partly enclosing the already covered entrance portico with a glass ‘wind lobby’ for several practical reasons. It will reduce the wind factor through the Lifestyle Centre and offices – currently a problem to manage, it will afford the receptionist a quieter environment in which to work – she currently has to contend with the gym music while fielding calls, and it will provide space for the additional Estate Management staff to allow a second staff member to ensure that there is always someone at the entrance to the lifestyle centre even if the receptionist is on lunch or has stepped away from her desk.

WHITE CLIFFS The final stages of the landscaping of this area should begin in April, with the installation of plant ‘sausages’. These are hessian rolls, sewed up to take soil, and into which will be planted a variety of spreading ground cover and flowering plants. The walkway planned for the balance of the path between the West end of the White Cliffs lower pathway, over the stream way which feeds the lake, to the Lifestyle Centre, is in the planning and budgeting phase, and should begin construction towards the end of winter. WEST BERM On the Ou Kaapse Weg side of the Estate we have been creating a ‘berm’ from excess fill from the White Cliffs project. Landscaping will begin in late April by Intebe Landscaping to create a shield from the noise of the traffic on this busy road, as well as to create a visual privacy barrier, without detracting from the views of the surrounding mountainside.

Residents are strongly encouraged to recycle as the Estate enjoys a significant rebate against the costs for this service for the volume of recycling achieved. It’s easy. Simply put all tin, plastic, paper and glass into the clear plastic bags provided and leave it out for collection early on a Monday morning.

SHADING TO PARKS

In order to provide further shading to the park areas in Stone Village, Stonehurst Close and on the West side of the Estate, we are exploring the option of ‘flying’ tent structures. These would provide immediate shade and due to the design, will not be as subject to wind as would plants on trellises, which was an alternative proposal.
The Network Operations Centre planned for the security entrance is progressing well and the structure should be complete within the next three weeks. The installation of a generator will ensure that the security systems will remain operational even if there is a power outage, and the monitoring station will mean that our additional cameras will be fully utilised to protect the Estate from unwanted visitors. This renovation will also streamline the biometric administration systems and provide our Security Manager with an office to be able to more efficiently administer our security service provider.

Your landscaped garden is an integral part of your property/house design and should not be ignored or left until after the house has been completed to be considered. The information below is particularly pertaining to the design and landscaping of your garden with the intention to reduce the risk of wildfire. This extract is taken from the Stonehurst Mountain Estate Wildfire Prevention OEMP, including the Recommendations for property owners and occupiers: reducing fire risk to properties on the urban edge – Cape Peninsula prepared for CPNP by RA Chapman and GG Forsyth CSIR Stellenbosch.
GUIDING PHILOSOPHY TO DESIGN TO REDUCE FIRE RISK In six days in January 2000, over 9000 hectares of vegetation burned in an uncontrollable wildfire which swept through the southern end of the Cape Peninsula. Had the winds not been as kind, the fire could have become the most expensive fire in the history of the country and caused a catastrophe on an unprecedented scale. In the wake of the fire came flooding and mudslides which damaged property which had escaped the fire. As a direct result of the “Millennium” fire, the mainly privately sponsored and State supported Ukuvuku “Operation Firestop” was initiated. In order to give some context to the following points, it may be instructive to attempt to understand the main points of fynbos ecology and the effects of fire on it. Fynbos is prone to fire and is adapted to it; without occasional fire, fynbos becomes senescent and species diversity of plant communities becomes impoverished. Adaptations to fire include the following fire-stimulated features: seed release, seed germination, new vegetative growth and flowering. Fire in fynbos naturally occurs with a frequency of at least once every four to 40 years. Fire with a frequency of less than four years or more than every 40 years leads to changes in fynbos plant communities e.g. the dominance of fynbos by a few large Protea family species and a concomitant reduction in species diversity. Fire is an essential component to the maintenance of healthy, vigorous and diversified fynbos; many fynbos species require fire for reproductive success.
Service in the first instance: this Service is responsible for fires on the mountain to a distance of 100m around the Estate. The Fire Service will assess which other role players, such as Cape Peninsula National Parks or City of Cape Town Parks and Bathing Amenities also need to respond to the fire.
DESIGNING THE GARDEN FOR FIRE PROTECTION The first task is to identify the fuel hazards in the garden. The home-owner should strive for a garden which has a low elevated fuel hazard, defined as ‘Easy to walk through in any direction’ (McCarthy et al. 1999). The garden litter load should not be greater than 15mm deep (leaf litter is a surface fine fuel - see Section 2.1). Eucalypt leaves and pine needles don’t turn into humus easily and are usually always highly flammable. A variety of plants can be used as potential barriers for screening out radiant heat, intercepting wind-borne burning embers, or to slow down or stop the progress of the firefront. In general, the broad-leaved, high foliar moisture plants are the most suitable. They should be sited at the edge of the property on the fire-ward, that is, the CPNP side. See Table 2. Avoid flammable shrubs under decks, up against walls, against wooden pillars or in hanging baskets. Trees with large amounts of dead leaves hanging down, such as palms, should not be in close proximity to the building. Burning branches may fall onto the house or they may be blown into the house by the strong turbulent winds. The dead leaves should be removed regularly where such trees cannot be removed.

Succulents have a very high foliar moisture content, are quite fire retardant and therefore are very suitable as a low-level barrier. There are many indigenous succulents ranging from aloes to the much shorter ground covers; they have further merit in that they do not require much watering (Table 4). Lawns will burn, albeit relatively slowly. If lawns are growing under wooden decking, there is a possibility of them carrying

SLOPE Slope dramatically increases the speed at which a fire can move. Each 10 per cent increase in slope, doubles the speed of a bushfire (Luke and McArthur, 1977). So a fire travels twice as fast up a 10% slope as on level ground and four times as fast up a 20% slope (100% slope = 45° slope angle). Fires can travel up a cliff-face within seconds. Conversely, fire is considerably slowed when the head fire is going downhill. See Section 2.1 for an overview of the effects of spread rate on fire intensity. When slopes exceeding 15-20° are combined with wind in the direction of the slope, the effect is to push the flames almost parallel to the surface and the flame front can cover the whole slope, that is, the whole slope becomes one sheet of flame. This can present an exceptionally dangerous situation for fire fighters. Properties located on hillsides to take advantage of scenic views are especially vulnerable if they are upslope of areas with high fuel loads. Or, they may be on the borders of drainage systems. If the streamline has a steep gradient, these features form gullies, chutes or funnels in which a wildfire can be concentrated, which may be reinforced by wind turbulence exacerbated by the uneven terrain. Vegetation below these properties should be a specific target for management action, with the goal of reducing fuel loads. Properties down-slope of a fire, and where there is sufficient gradient, are vulnerable to burning material, which rolls under gravity into the urban zone. This is a particular risk where forest plantations, or old plantation lands containing debris from past logging activities, exists above the urban zone. Property owners

Buildings with combustible external walls, for example “log cabin� type constructions, are also at risk, as are buildings with thatch roofs or other combustible roof cladding such as bituminous-based fibre sheeting or plastic, as might be found in informal settlements. Adequate fire breaks need to be provided at property boundaries, and gardens clear of dense flammable vegetation. Accumulated dead vegetation or other combustible material such as wood-piles, are a significant risk factor under buildings constructed on piles (stilts). Wood-piles can generate large amounts of heat over an extended period, adding to the heat load from the wildfire itself (Wilson andFerguson, 1984). All under-floor areas should be kept clear of combustible materials and vegetation. Timber decking and combustible walls are subject to regulations that specify that they must be a certain minimum distance from the property boundaries. Adherence to building regulations in the South Peninsula Municipality is monitored. PVC gutters and down-pipes are not considered as high risk items as they would tend to char and melt under high levels of radiant heat and they do not contribute to the fire load as they only burn for as long as they are exposed to flame; they are self extinguishing i.e. they stop burning once the flame is removed (Bryan Wallis, Fire Engineering Sciences, CSIR, pers. com.)

t’s always difficult to push oneself to get into a training system and look forward to exercise. This is potentially the reason that running groups or “the good old aerobics
class” (think Jane Fonda!) or organised exercise is so popular purely because of the accountability aspect. Like brushing your teeth or taking the kids to school, the human mind likes to work with structure and operates best when it is accountable to something or someone, particularly loved ones. Well it is time that we became accountable to ourselves and begin loving ourselves and valuing our health as a priority. We know that despite global intelligence, lifestyle disease such as obesity, heart attack and strokes are at an all-time high and we are getting smarter by the day but we are also getting fatter and unhealthier. By the time you have read this article 20 people in the USA would have died from a heart attack (roughly every 30 seconds someone in the states dies from a heart attack – I am assuming that it will take you 10 minutes to read this), this is not to say that exercising will be the absolute difference between living or dying but it certainly will tick a box on giving you your best chance to maximise your energy in life and enhance longevity.
