you can even learn something about the environment. Geocaches (Cache for short) can be a wide range of containers hidden in any spot a Geocacher (someone who looks for/hides geocaches) deems worthy. It can be fun, it can be creative, and yes, it can be addictive. WHaT IS a gEOcacHE? Why such a weird name? Geo means Earth (think geography), and a Cache is a container that holds items. Geocache! Geocaches are usually very well hidden, hence the reason why this game has been around since 2000 and so little is known about it to non-Geocachers (also referred to as “muggles”). The Cache usually consists of a weather-resistant container holding a logbook and a mishmash of plastic toys, coins, key chains and other small items for trade. A few of the items I’ve also seen, but are definitely not limited to, are buttons, cards, pendants, and even a meat hook with fake rubber ears on it. The best items a cacher can hope for, besides the log, are items known as “Travel Bugs”. A Travel Bug is a trackable dog tag attached to an item that geocachers call a “hitchhiker.” Each Travel Bug has a goal set by its owner. Goals are typically travel-related, such as to visit every country in Africa or travel from coast to coast. Travel Bug Trackables move from cache to cache with the help of Geocachers like us, and are obviously, as the name suggests, trackable via the Geocaching website. HOW bIg aRE THEy anD WHERE can THEy bE fOUnD? The great thing about geocaches is their uniqueness. lanDScapIng As the weather really starts heating up this month, we say goodbye to winter rains in the Western Cape and hello to perfect planting conditions for the garden lover. TIpS fOR WaTERIng In SUMMER: •
Before you water, feel the soil below the surface by sticking your finger in a few centimetres deep. Sometimes soil looks dry on top, but it’s moist a few centimetres below.
•
Use a fine nozzle to water new seedlings. Established plants should be watered by flooding the garden beds. Place the tip of the hosepipe right into the garden bed so that you don’t lose water to evaporation by watering from high above.
•
Make sure that your hose pipe, as well as its fittings and nozzles, are all in good shape to prevent losing water through leaks.
•
Keep your plants well fed and free of disease. They will be more resistant to dry conditions.
•
Avoid watering on windy days, or in the middle of the day. It’s best to water before 10h00 in the morning or after 16h00 in the afternoon.
•
Move your container plants to a shady area to decrease their watering requirements.
•
Water less frequently, but more deeply. This will encourage your plants to develop deeper root systems. Roots close to the surface dry out quickly, but plants with roots more than 10cm below the surface are far more drought resistant. At a depth of 10cm below the soil, the temperature can be up to 5C cooler.
•
Mulch the garden to prepare and protect for summer heat.
laWnS Weeds, especially annuals, get a good grip on lawns that aren’t well-maintained – so fertilise to ensure healthy grass, which will suppress weeds.
21
LANDSCAPING AND NATURE Feed your lawn every four to six weeks with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season (end of August to end of April). Mow lawn regularly and remember to frequently change the direction in which you mow to prevent ridges and uneven growth. Don’t cut grass too short: rather cut it more often. Fill any remaining patches with finely sifted compost or lawn mulch – not garden soil, which could be full of weed seeds just waiting to germinate. Water lawns in the morning so that these can dry out by the evening. For a lush Christmas lawn, fertilise in the beginning of December with a nitrogenenriched organic fertiliser and water well but don’t feed before going on vacation as it will stimulate growth and need too much mowing while you are gone. pESTS Keep an eye out for aphids this time of the year. Snails and cutworms are also very active and can damage plants over a short period of time if not attended to timeously. All pesticides should be applied strictly in accordance with the instructions provided on the container label or the enclosed pamphlet. Using the wrong pesticides can cause more harm than good and if you are not sure what to use, visit your
healthy foliage and flowers. Remember that container plants need to be fertilised more often than plants planted in open ground. Until next time, enjoy gardening.

WaTER aS a valUablE RESOURcE IRRIGATION TIPS FROM NICK KENYON
W
ater is a scarce resource and with climate change, it will become scarcer. Drilling boreholes and
well points is a self-serving, short term solution. The underground reservoir is a quantifiable resource and with less rainfall and more water being extracted from it, water will become less accessible. The water table is dropping and within a few years, a lot of boreholes will have to be re-bored. The City of Cape Town will have no choice but to restrict use of this valuable underground resource. The answer to this problem is to conserve water. The first method in the garden would be to plant water-wise and indigenous plants that do not use a lot of water, but one does not need to resort to planting ‘green concrete’ (ivy) or to pebble large areas, which is unsightly. Lawn sprinklers have a bad distribution pattern with most of the water being distributed at the end of the stream and less and less water the closer you get to the sprinkler, thus sprinklers should be placed that overlap 100% to give an even distribution. If this is not the case with your system, you will have a scenario of too much water at the end of the radius and less and less water as you move back to the sprinkler. In order to avoid brown patches you will water till the area closest to the sprinkler has enough water, but then you will have over watered the rest of the radius of the sprinkler. This can be tested by placing small containers every half metre on your lawn. You will notice that the container closest to the sprinkler will have less than a quarter of the water that the container at the end of the stream has and thus you will have to water four times longer than you should. This is a waste of water and electricity, two

TRaffIc calMIng Estate Management continue to implement traffic calming measures, such as speed tables, as well as additional warning signage to counter the unfortunate reality that a few visitors and residents do not adhere to the speed limit on the Estate, posing a serious danger to the many children, other residents and our indigenous wildlife which enjoys its freedom in the public areas. Some of the speed tables are deliberately higher than others, specifically at the stop streets, to ensure that vehicles have to come to a complete stop in order to negotiate them. A new ‘roundabout’ is being installed at the Stone Village / Stonehurst Close / Emergency Gate intersection, as unfortunately we have had several near misses and accidents due to the corners at this intersection being ‘cut’.

Simmons Queen Size Bed Sets from
R7499
During its 137-year history, Simmons, the world’s leading mattress manufacturer, has developed over
148 patents for better quality sleep products. This amazing track record has been achieved largely due to Simmons’ century-long commitment to the philosophy of better sleep through science™.
Simmons has sponsored some of the earliest sleep research on record. Innovative break-throughs include
the patented Simmons Pocketed Coil® Spring, which minimises the transfer of movement from one sleeping
partner to the other, while providing superior comfort and support, in that the mattress moulds to your body shape giving excellent spinal alignment.
Cloud Nine Double Bed Sets from
R3999
The CLOUD NINE range of products are all multi-layered Viscous Elastic and Polyurethane foam products. Some of the benefits when investing in a Cloud Nine sleep set include:
· Cloud Nine mattresses are great for back sufferers as they ensure a stable spinal support.
· Because foam is completely stable once cured, a Cloud Nine mattress is hygienic and allergy free. · There are no moving parts or rigid components in the mattress which may cause pressure points. · Zero motion transfer between the sleeping partners.
Whatever your body size, Cloud Nine has the range of beds to support your spine in the correct position.
Rest Assured Double Bed Sets from
R3299
Matrix Range: The Matrix range uses technology and innovative design to ensure maximum sleeping comfort
all night long. Rest Assured South Africa is the first certified manufacturer of the Matrix Sleep Support System – a unique spring unit consisting of interlocked coils that conform to your body, providing more support in all the right places.
Heritage Range: The Heritage Bonnell Coil offers a firmer support mattress with a luxurious feel. Its classic Bonnell hourglass-shaped coils and firm, reconstituted foam provides optimum support, while high-density foam and fibre conforms to your body’s contours, providing surface comfort and the luxurious feel of the mattress.
Evolution Range: You and your partner can toss and turn up to 50 times a night, so motion separation is the key to a peaceful, undisturbed night’s sleep. Unlike ordinary mattresses, each Evolution Pocket Spring has its
own fabric pocket, so when you move, the independently responding pocket coils minimize the motion transfer to your partner.

Residents were treated to swing, jazz, pop and Latin songs and music, masterfully conducted by Bob Mowday. The band, a group of volunteers, play for the love of it and are happy to donate their time for charitable events. The proceeds from this particular evening went to the Wildlife ACT Rhino Charity.

Stonehurst residents and friends spent their 67 minutes making sandwiches for the needy. The 2680 sandwiches were distributed far and wide, from orphanages in Masiphumelele to families on our doorstep in Westlake. It was an amazing achievement and a true example of how great our community spirit is. Thanks to all who took part.

Teams had their general knowledge tested once again at our most recent Quiz Night, hosted by John Keating. Brains were working overtime trying to find the answers to John’s quirky questions, with the highlights still being the “Place the Face” and “Name the Song” rounds. Well done to all who took part.

HallOWEEn 31 OCTOBER 2013
Halloween has become Stonehurst’s sold out “event of the year”. This year, 100 children joined the party, dressed up for the occasion in one way or another. As usual, Lynette Rix organised amazing decor to transform the Lifestyle Centre into the makings of a horror movie. Penny and her team from Enchanted Parties did a wonderful job of entertaining the kids with tug of war (in between the bouts of rain), magic shows and face painting. And for those not keen to get wet Trick or Treating around the Estate, Vaughn Barkhuizen and some keen parents chaperoned the kiddies from door to door.

We started a Ladies Night just over a year ago and it has grown in leaps and bounds. The objectives of the Ladies Night were that the ladies on the Estate could meet their neighbours, get to know new residents and, at the same time perhaps learn something new from a guest speaker – in line with our motto of “Charity begins at Home”, we also choose to support the Westlake Jabulani Day Care Centre. During the course of the year, funds were raised to help build a new structure at the Centre to protect the children from the outdoor elements, old toys, clothes and food items were collected and at the last event of the year, funds were collected to give the children a Christmas Party. A turnout of over 60 Stonehurst Residents and their guests arrived at our Christmas evening, showing that a “girls night out” at Stonehurst is just the place to let off some steam. Stonehurst residents invited their girlfriends from outside the Estate as well – great comments were received about what a fantastic venue we have and how friendly and welcoming the Stonehurst Ladies are – personally, I think a lot of them went home rather jealous that they did not live here!!

WHERE TO STay In THE cInqUE TERRE There was a time when guidebooks would recommend that you not even bother to make reservations in advance of visiting the Cinque Terre, because you could get better deals by just showing up and chatting with any of the women who would hang out in the train stations with signs advertising rooms for rent. Those days are sadly gone, at least in the high season. Anyone who’s visiting during the busy season is advised to book ahead of time to avoid the disappointment of having to take the train from town to town searching for a bed. One thing you need to be careful of is that since the Cinque Terre is a region and not a specific town name, it’s easy for hotels and hostels that aren’t really in one of the Cinque Terre towns to say that they’re in the Cinque Terre. You’ll think everything’s fine until you get there and realise you’re at least a train ride away from any of the five villages. Also, be warned, the villages are virtually car-free and built into near-vertical hillsides, which give the region its unique character. Getting to and from your accommodation - up narrow cobbled alleyways and dauntingly steep steps - is likely to be part of your Cinque Terre experience. In cOnclUSIOn We booked two well-equipped and superbly positioned apartments through Arbaspàa, a local tour agency. Built on the cliff-face, both had balconies with breath-taking views of Manarola’s tiny fishing harbour and the Ligurian Coastline all the way to Monterosso. The cost of our accommodation for four days worked out at approximately R6 500 per couple, which in our opinion was great value, especially when taking into account that the Rand had collapsed just prior to our departure and cost somewhere in the region of R13.76 per Euro. We were exceptionally happy with both the quality of our accommodation and the very good service that we received from Arbaspàa. All six of us agreed to highly recommend Arbaspàa

length of time it takes to get the transaction into the Deeds Office is dependent on the reaction time taken by each and every one of the mentioned parties. The usual time taken by the Deeds Office to inspect all of the documents lodged by the different conveyancers for a specific transaction is seven working days. On average, the time taken to register the transfer of property, where a bond is involved, will be two or three months from the date that the conveyancer is instructed. When all of the checks have been made, all of the procedures followed by the conveyancer and the property has been registered in the name of the purchaser, the purchaser can be assured that he or she has the best title to the property.
