Personal Essay This year has been an amazing year, partly due to learning Journalism. I started the year off as part of the Newspaper staff, writing articles week after week and trying to meet weekly deadlines. I noticed that being part of a newspaper took much more time and effort than I had initially thought. Also, not knowing how to write real newspaper articles it was difficult to keep up. I dropped down to intro to journalism as a result of my many errors. In this class, I have learned almost too much for my brain to take. I have learned how to use indesign and photoshop. Additionally, I learned how to take great pictures and use different camera settings I wasn’t familiar with before. In my opinion, the most important thing I learned in this course is how to be a better and a stronger writer. I am not one to be interested in writing news articles and strong statements, however, learning to do so has made my passive voice less passive and my persuasive voice more persuasive. I don’t see myself becoming a journalist in the future, but because my writing has become immensely stronger, I see myself utilizing the skills I have learned throughout the class, in many situations. For example, I have even adapted to writing quicker than I did before. This is due to reporting and taking notes as the person I interview speaks. This could be used in class to take notes, and to be able to write down a thought as it comes. I can also see myself using the skills I learned on indesign and photoshop to create beautiful presentations for school or for conferences. With a good presentation, comes a good point. As a result of my growth, I am eager to see where else I can put my new skills to use. Even though I may not continue with the journalism here in Gulliver, I am sure that what I learn will stay with me hereafter.
One project I like to reflect on most is my photography portfolio. So much so that I like to look at it every now and then and admire the amount I have grown with photography and how I use cameras to take better pictures. The journalism class has really allowed me to expand my knowledge on photography. My favorite picture in the portfolio were the pictures of my lovely kitten, whom I love so much. In addition to photography, I learned how to create a project on indesign with a set theme, and use photoshop to improve the quality of the pictures. I enjoyed the amount I was able to collaborate with other students in the making of this portfolio, especially during the scavenger hunt, when all of the students in the class went outside the classroom and took pictures, getting a new lens on the world. In this I was able to make friendships whilst learning about new camera techniques. My two favorite pictures that are part of my photography portfolio is the rule of thirds picture of my cat. It’s sharp and very focused on the main subject. It showed a new perspective on how to take pictures in a new style. The second picture I was the close up of the flower showing detail. This is because it shows how much I have grown in photography. The immense amount of detail in the picture was surprising to me. I was never much of a photographer but I must say, I was quite impressed with what I took during the scavenger hunt, especially this picture. My favorite part of the picture is the little water droplet on the flower, showing a lot of structure and sharpness in the picture. These two pictures, best showcased my growth in photography throughout the course. I learned in this class, that journalism goes beyond just sentences, but that photography is a huge factor in a good piece of news.
