R Ef LE cti o ns My favorite spread that I did this year was “Death of a Rose” for the Reflections Lit Mag. When I was looking through options to put together the perfect layout, I saw the poem “Death of a Rose” and once I read it, I knew I had to use it. When looking for a picture or art work, the black and white photo of the roses caught my eye. The pieces together spoke to me and I felt comfortable with my design. I tried my best to be creative with it and make it my best piece yet.

In April of 2019, I attended the FSPA Conference with my adviser and a group of students. Part of the conference we had to make a spread with a poem and a piece of artwork. The theme was Electrify, so I compared the poem “Be Different” with a piece from Sam Stark. When I look at this piece I feel the electricity between the two works.

Be Different

Carlos Acosta

To be different is to be brave. To be different is to be true to yourself. To be different could be a weapon. But to be different, you have to have faith.

You have to think before you follow. You have to speak out when you disagree. Your actions have to be guided by your beliefs. And be the owner of your mistakes

You are one in a billion, and sometimes you feel alone. The others around you are anonymous. They don’t want to think on their own.

They follow blindly and obediently, like sheep follow the herd. Even if they are taken to their death. No matter what direction the masses takes, Make your own path and take on the masses.

WRI ING REPRESENTAION IS MORE THAN COLOR A recent article written by Bianca Vivion Brooks and published by the New York Times is about how representation is more than your skin color. “Is it enough to look like the artist if you do not recognize yourself in the art?” Over the past few years the word “representation” had been very popular. It partly started in 2015 with the April Reign hashtag campaign #OscarsSoWhite, which indicted the Academy Awards for a lack of nominations for actors of color. Since then, creative figures across industry, Film producers, gallery curators, print advertisers, have all been called upon to ramp up inclusivity in their respective fields. THey hope to advance popular culture away from white, male dominance toward gender and racial equality. The need for representation of marginalized identities in art is evident, especially when considering a larger fight against racist patriarchal social and political institutions. Recently Vogue magazine came out with Beyonce on its cover and for the first time a black photographer Tyler Mitchell took the photo. I wonder if we have overlooked other meaningful ways of being represented, those that can be pinpointed only in life experiences. emotional phenomenon beyond visible self. representation may be a praiseworthy standard for creative industries but it cannot be the benchmark against which we measure good art. Good art must do more than reflect our own images back at us. It must move us to a place beyond our obsession with identity, sense of tribalism and fear of others. I think that the way you represent yourself and the way you put yourself out there is so important. The way you put yourself out there is the way that people will see you even without knowing you. The way you represent yourself shows how your personality is. Just because your black or white doesn’t mean that your from a good or bad community. You are who you are by the way you put yourself out to the world. Your skin color is just something that’s about you.
