Personal Essay To be honest, journalism is not my favorite thing, but I do love to write. I took this class to further my knowledge of writing and my writing ability. It was a lot more fun than originally expected and I am glad that I took it, but I believe I can firmly state that the journalist life is not for me. I have learned so much in this class about journalistic writing and graphic design. That was another element that drew me to take this class. I have been interested in graphic design and now having this knowledge to do these things myself is extremely fortunate. At first I had very little knowledge of photography and now I feel I can take this newly found passion further. I can definitely see me using these skills later in life. I do greatly enjoy art and graphic design can definitely help me in that field. Agai, the writing practice always helps me and who knows, maybe I could go into a journalistic career.

Reflection

One piece that particularly stands out to me is the literary magazine spread that I made for Massie Pan’s submission. When I first read this submission I loved it. It was deep and explicit. I spoke about a girl going through this sort of sex trade and her experience in it. The writing made her seem young and naive about her situation. She seemed to have this experience often and it hit me like a wall. Some people have such different norms in their lives and these norms can often be heartbreaking like this one. I had the opportunity to pair this with a stunning art piece that I thought went perfectly with the submission. At first this was a difficult task to complete. The art did not fit on the same page as the full submission, which in ended up being two pages. The full spread itself ended up being four pages just to fit the written submission paired with the art submission. The only problem then was the size of the picture. Spreading the art across the two pages was no problem, but getting it to go all the way to the bottom of the page was the struggle. In the end I had to take a screenshot of the bottom of the picture and create a new picture box on top of the original picture and extend the bottom to get an even look on the bottom of the art. The first photo I would like to talk about is the photo of ceramics teacher, Joseph Golinski. He happens to be one of my favorite teachers and I had the pleasure of interviewing him for my faces of gulliver portion of my photography portfolio. The other picture is of one of my friends framed by the diamond of the fence on the football field. He actually helped me with a lot of the photos in my photography portfolio because he is a sort of photographer himself. This picture in particular was for my elements of composition portion of my photography portfolio.

A word on the EPA Rule Change

“E.P.A. Rule Change Could Let Dirtiest Coal Plants Keep Running (and Stay Dirty)” The new E.P.A. proposal that the Trump Administration wrote could cause some of America’s oldest and dirtiest coal plants to be renovated without scrubbers or modern pollution controls. Scrubbers are a device that use a cloud of fine water droplets and crushed limestone to pull sulfur out of the plants’ exhaust before it reaches the atmosphere. The Gerald Gentleman Station plant in Nebraska would be one that would benefit from this new policy. As of 2017, more than 21,000 tons of sulfur dioxide was being emitted out of its two power units, per year. The gases being produced from this plant and many others in the US are a public safety issue. These gases cause many respiratory problems in people of all ages. This issue also speeds up the effects of climate change. During the Obama administration, the Clean Power Plan would help slow the effects of climate change and better the health of the American people. If coal power plants were to be depleted, than the air Americans breath would be much cleaner, the number of respiratory issues would go down, and the people would be much safer. The new rule only helps the on the business side of the coal plants. What some fail to see, is that there are jobs in clean energy as well. In the long run, the health of the American people will be the most important.
