My Portfolio By Julian Concepcion

My Favorite Piece Look back at the pieces you’ve selected for your portfolio, and briefly discuss one piece (either writing, design or photography) that you are most proud of, or that demonstrates the most growth. Explain why that piece is important to you.

In all of the pieces that I have done, I am most proud of this one. I did not design the page, but I am responsible for the story, and the pictures. At this time, I was really starting to get involved in many school events, and was really enjoying my time there. I took many pictures, made interviews, and overall just had a great time. The energy and emotion from the event made the end product, (the spread,) all the more enjoyable.

Also, choose two of the photos included in your portfolio, and describe what makes them great. What drew you to this picture? Do they have good elements of composition (center of visual interest, repetition, leading lines, rule of thirds, etc.) ?

Overall, my two favorite photos are these. The plane one shows leading lines, and overall just looks really nice. And the photo of the dancers show repetition and, at least what I think, really captures the moment.

Reflect...

Reflect on the past year. How do you about the journalistic and design skills you learned now that you’ve completed the course? How have you grown as a writer, photographer, designer? How do you see yourself utilizing the skills you’ve learned (either in school or in the future as a professional)?

Ever since this year started, I have become more and more involved in journalism and improving my design skills. I can tell from the presentations and spreads that I produce that my design skills have greatly improved. I learned how to implement new techniques that I picked up in either Adobe InDesign or Photoshop into regular school things such as presentations, documents, and more. Clearly, I think my design skills have improved, along with my writing skills. I have started to follow the inverted pyramid format to write great news stories and articles, some which have been published in the yearbook! But more importantly, I think my photography skills have improved the most. Ever since I took that trip to New York with the yearbook and newspaper staff, I have been inspired to improve at taking pictures, specifically ones that showcase events with people doing activities. Now, I am being called to all sorts of events I had no idea even existed to take pictures. These skills I think will be very useful, not just in my yearbook and newspaper class I will take, but in the future too. I am not entirely sure what career I want to pursue, but journalism and media sounds pretty good to me!

Clips: Photography

Clips: Photography

For all of these clips, there was no real assignment. They are all just pictures of different events in Gulliver that I took pictures of. Wether it’s from a trip to NYC, or a lacrosse game, I am very proud of these photos, and am glad at the way they all turned out.

Clips: Writing For this clip, I attended the Special Olympics 5K Run, and ended up writing the story for the yearbook! Looking at the page now, I am very glad how It turned out and look forward to writing more.

Clips: Writing

This is an opinion piece that I wrote about the events that are happening in the country of Venezuela. Though it did not get published, I am proud of the way it turned out, and I think writing this piece really improved my writing skills.

Clips: Design This is my Humans of Gulliver spread from The Scavenger Hunt project we did in the beginning of the year. It is my take at the “Humans of New York website, but with Gulliver students.

Clips: Design

This is a spread that i made for the Literary Magazine.

About Me... Hi! My name is Julian Concepcion. I go to school at Gulliver

Prep, and am 15 years old. I have been in journalism for about 3 years, and consider myself very passionate about it! Ever since I was young, I have been very fond of taking pictures, making videos, and communicating with lots of people. In the 7th grade, I decided that I should take Journalism, as it seemed like an interesting class. Little did I k now, I would end up pursuing that passion in high school too!. I took the intro class my freshman year, and am about to start yearbook, and newspaper when I finish my world language credits. Pictures have always been my passion, so i started to go to every event I could. Now, my pictures are being showcased in the yearbook, newspaper, and even on the official school instagram! Overall, I see journalism more than a hobby, but as something important in my future!
