Reflection - photography

In my last year of middle school, I had finally felt that I was connecting to something, being part of something that I knew I could soon pursue after high school. Back then, I was taking art. I loved it, it took my mind off of school and work and it was a zen time for me. I had decided I would take it all my years of high school and yet, here I see myself finding a passion in something I had not even thought of pursuing. Over the summer I changed one of my electives to Journalism because I had heard the class and the structure of what was learned was very interesting and creative. I didn’t overthink my choice and signed up for the class. Throughout this year, as a freshman, everything I thought was certain for me has changed. The things and people I thought I would be connected to forever has changed and I’ve grown up a great deal. I’ve also realized that I have a passion for Graphic Design. Creating spreads and photohopping images is so much fun for me. Throughout this year I’ve learned many things but, one of the most important lessons is that I’ve realized that the best choices are the spontaneuous ones. In addition to making spreads and altering images, I’ve learned how to write like a Journalist. The few spreads we practiced that were pointed out to be similar to yearbook spreads I absolutely loved creating. I am very excited to be part of the Yearbook staff for my following years of high school and hope that my career in the future will be related to this passion.

To me, this is one of my favorite pictures for a lot of reasons. I find that the photo’s composition is very strong and the photographic quality gives this image a unique view. I really like that the camera managed to capture the person’s thougts through the picture as you can tell there is a sense of self determination and focus. Even the focus of the camera brings out this unique quality in the picture. Another factor which allows for this image to be so capturing to the eye is the colors. The dark blue in contrast with the face allows for the face to come out even more. This picture is one of my favorite photos because of the contrast in color and focus and the mood the camera captured. In our photography portfolio, I used this photo for the scavenger hunt of my brother as an ‘extreme closeup’

Reflection - photography This image has a very clean and appealing look. The fact that the face is centered in the image makes the composition very clear and clean. Everything about this picture is great. The fact that the face is almost on top of the background is beautiful and the mood the face seems to give off is very soothing and zen.

Reflection- design This, in my opinion, is the best spread that I have made. This spread is my favorite because the composition and matching of colors makes the spread look really good. In addition, the art piece and the literature piece seem to match up perfectly and even the physical appearance of the dog, despite being described very little in writing, seems to be very similar. Other factors that allow for this spread to look so good are that it has a very soothing color choice in addition to the composition of the picture in reference to the title. The fact that the title uses some of the colors from the picture also adds to this. This art piece is very well made which contributes substiantially to the attractiveness of the piece. Overall, this was my favorite spread because of all these factors.

Clips - writing A Club, a Class, a Way to Save the Environment Students with a passion for science come together in Field Studies where they research how they can help their environment. They visit areas along the coast of Florida often to apply their knowledge into restoring the environment. Field Studies is a class where students learn how they can maintain their environment and provides access as to what they can do to help improve the earth. It allows for students to apply what they learn in their science classes by giving them the opportunity to replant coral, monitor the behavior and functions of mammals, and learn how they can restore the wetlands. “Whatever students learn in here, they apply out there.” says Emilia Odife, the proctor of Field Studies. ‘We want to be part of changing the perception that “only adults can do it” or “only scientists can do it.” Anyone who has actual interest in the environment can be involved in Field Studies and participate in what we do for the wildlife and the earth.’ says Odife, explaining the purpose of Field Studies. Field Studies began as a club and has evolved into an elective where students apply their technical skills into the outside world. Every so often, the focuses are altered, yet, so far, the three major subjects students are researching include The Coral Restoration which, according to Odife, is the ‘Key project of Field Studies’. Here, students take frequent trips to Bonaire where they have the ability to work directly with the corals. The students dive and replant corals after they have been grown for about a year in a lab. Currently, Field Studies is partnering with the Coral Restoration Foundation in Key Largo and have visited Bonaire regularly. Another of the major focuses is the Mammal Research project, where the behavior and response of dolphins is continuously monitored and studied. Once students understand the movement and communication skills of the dolphins, they then head out into the ocean and monitor free dolphins and observe their actions and responses. The third focus of the club is the Wetland Restoration project. This

is the only project in which students do not have to dive to participate completely. The Wetland Restoration project has taken the most time because of the amount of permits and numerous steps that must be taken in order to finally begin to apply knowledge and research into the land. In this project, students begin by mapping certain areas of the Wetlands and attempt to remove the invasive plants and maintain the native plants. Field Studies, as a whole, helps create awareness and makes people conscious about simple things they can do to help the environment. Field Studies allows for students to think about what may happen in the long run if the problems in the environment continue as they are. In Field Studies, Odife gives students the resources, as younger adults, to be the spokespeople. “I’m not the Lorax, I don’t speak for the trees, but you guys will.” she adds.

Police arrested a 10 year old girl in connection with house breakin. Yesterday afternoon, the Bears, after coming home from the market, came home to a house where they were not alone. Immediately after walking in through the door, Papa Bear was certain that someone else was present. Baby Bear says: “Instantly, I could tell something was up. Papa Bear was smelling the air in a strange way and he was looking around the house drastically.” Mama, Papa, and Baby Bear had gone out just earlier that morning for a cup of coffee at the market. Mama had already set breakfast (porridge) out so that when they got back it would be the perfect temperature depending on their own particular tastes but, after coming home following their long walk and already strenuous day, the Bears found another issue to do with their house. Someone had broken in. Mama Bear says: “When we were coming down the path I could already tell that something was wrong. The door was slightly opened and when we walked inside, the kitchen didn’t seem to be the way we had left it.” Walking in, according to Mama Bear, each bear announced that their porridge had been eaten! Baby Bear’s porridge was empty, ‘someone was definitely in the house’ concluded Papa Bear. After walking into the living room, the bears also noticed that their chairs had been sat in. Baby Bear’s chair was even broken into! Papa Bear, by then, was already getting angry. When they walked into their rooms they noticed their beds had been slept in. Baby Bear had noticed something strange about his bed though, someone was still in it! As soon as Baby Bear yelled this out, a petite blond haired girl woke up and yelled, running. This morning the girl was identified as ‘Goldilocks’, the daughter of two farmers who live further South.

“She ran away due to a disagreement with her parents.” - Josh Marshall, police chief of the area

The 10 year old was arrested this morning and came out with the following quote: “I was starving and tired, all I wanted was somewhere to sleep and something to eat!” She will be released later this afternoon after being picked up by her parents from the juvy.
