Personal Essay Last year I was in the journalism program which gave me an advantage to everybody else. But, this year, has allowed me to grow as a writer, photographer, and designer. We have worked on a variety of programs which have contributed to my growth as a journalist such as InDesign, Photoshop, and a lot more. When I entered the program, I thought I knew most or everything I had to know about layout, designing, writing, interviewing, and researching. But, as the year started and continued, I soon realized that there was more out there, more that I hadn’t learned or done. I’ve always loved writing, and I enjoyed it so much. In this past year, I have learned that there are so many ways to write and that I love every single one. I’ve learned how to utilize my writing skills not only in this course but in other classes such as English, business, and even science. Another thing which we learned this year was photography. Before this class, I had never taken a photography class nor ever thought about taking one. I soon realized that it was completely necessary to continue my path into the journalism program. During our photography portfolio, I was challenged and pushed to step out of my comfort zone and try new things such as trying photography. We were tasked with taking pictures of different things and even different angles. Designing layouts and creating spreads was most probably my favorite thing to do last year as the co-editor on the middle school staff. I think that I’ve always had an eye for design and I think working on InDesign proved that. I showed myself and peers how much I could do on the program and how well I can handle assignments and tasks. In the future, I would like to see myself on the path to going on the yearbook staff. I really like doing layouts, writing about the year, and coming up with new design and concepts. But most importantly, I love seeing people’s faces light up once they see the yearbook and their face on the spread.

Reflections The piece I am most proud of is my recreation of a magazine page. That design really showed my growth in this program. It showed that I can use photoshop, pair fonts, and how to recreate a design. I choose a complicated layout which I knew that would let me think outside the box and go outside my comfort zone. This piece is the most important to me because I think it was the first one that really showed my skills and showed everyone how much I have improved. One of the pictures that I liked the most was a picture I took during my lunch period of three of my friends laughing. I think it just really shows happiness and how much fun they are having together. It shows a the rule of thirds which makes it appealing to the eye. The second picture I like the best is the one that includes leading lines. I took this picture of one of my classmates standing on the field looking out onto the scoreboard. I took it from the floor where you can see the white lines leading to her feet and up to her whole body. I am very proud of these images as I took so much time and consideration about taking them and how I would use a element to complement the pictures.

Writing Opinion Pice IDs Increasing security in schools is becoming more and more critical for student and staff safety. With hundreds, thousands of students, staff, and visitors entering and exiting our school every day, it is important to identify and know who is authorized to be here and who is not. Precautions can be taken to prevent situations endangering students such as photo IDs. Students identification cards can significantly increase visual security on school campuses. While some think having your name carried around is an invasion of privacy, I do not think so. Our school announces students names on the Raider Vision and school websites. People can know your name by overhearing a conversation or having your teacher calling out your name in class. Knowing someone’s name isn’t an invasion of privacy in the school environment. I understand why some people don’t see the advantages of needing to wear school IDs. Some think that “how does knowing my name help school security?” or “why is it necessary that I wear it”. But frankly, it keeps everyone safe. Right now it is easy for people trying to get into the school to get in. Our students should be kept safe, especially in school. I suggest using the IDs for multi-purpose reasons such as used as library cards or even lunch cards. Seniors are constantly leaving and coming especially during lunch, keeping track of whether or not they came back will increase school safety. Wouldn’t you rather wear the ID’s or take a chance to end up being in the middle of a dangerous situation like being shot just because you didn’t want to wear a plastic card around your neck. Question that.

Devices Spying on Us? Social security number. Birthdays. Maiden names. Travel plans. Gender. Phone number. These are all examples of things that are given up on a daily basis with the use of microphone devices. Any device that hold a microphone could hypothetically listen in on you. It’s not paranoia, devices are really listening to everything you say and using your private conversations to target ads, security expert warns, and more. An expert explains how. “Anything that has asked to grant it permission to a device’s microphone could activate that microphone to ‘listen’ in when that application is both in the foreground and background depending on the developers intent and motives,” said Alex Rodriguez, director of Information Technology. “This is why it is especially important you pay close attention to device manufacturer’s or application developer’s Privacy Policy and/or Terms of Service before installing or bringing into an area in which you have an expectation of privacy such as homes or offices.” Following the release of the Alexa personal assistant home speaker device, Amazon previously endured clickbait reports that the device listens to and registers each user’s conversations. Its rival competition Google, went through the same situation when being accused of the same things with their Google Home. “They actually do ‘listen in’ on everything in order to detect the wake word. However, they are not supposed to be recording or logging this information,” says Rodriguez. “Once they detect the wake word they transmit the rest of the request via an encrypted tunnel to the cloud where they are logged to the provider’s servers and stored until you decide to purge that data.” This does not only apply to Amazon’s Echo Dots and the Google Home but also to phones and laptops, objects used worldwide 24/7. “I have an iPhone and I always find myself being surprised every time it knows what I’ve had a conversation about,” said freshmen Mercedes Vargas. “Once, I was talking about Costa Rica with my family and when I went to Google Flights, San Juan, Costa Rica was automatically there, it was very creepy since I hadn’t ever searched it up.” Google confirm they scan your emails, but vowed to quit doing so, for advertising reasons. The free email and search engine company announced it would stop reading its 1.2+ billion users’ emails for the purpose of advertising. The safest resolution is always to eliminate any cameras or microphones from home. Everyone strikes some balance between privacy and ease, but when it comes to always-on voice assistants, they’re not much dangerous than most of the other gadgets you have sitting around your house. There are a few key steps you could take to prevent your identity online. “Personally, I have taken some steps like covering my camera and I know people who have done the same to prevent something from happening,” said sophomore Jasmine Vega. “Although I try to prevent it and I do believe that some devices may spy on certain people but I highly doubt that the government/CIA/FBI would waste time spying on me.” The simplest things to do to make some of your general internet usages a bit more anonymous include browsing in private mode or avoiding popular search engines. Google, Bing, and Yahoo collect the most data in order to serve relevant ads and personalize assistance. When logged in with a personal account, these search engines can collect names, email address, birthday, gender, and even phone number. Everyone has been there. Down the beach talking about some crazy new interest and then boom, there it is, one of your most regularly used apps is giving you advertisements for what was just being talked about the next time you open the app on your phone. So is this just paranoia, or are smartphones actually listening?
