National Geographic A design that connects the human and environment in the Presidio of San Francisco.

4

Inspired by the landscape of the Presidio, the design conjures an image of a hidden place in the forest. It is a place where everything is connected to nature and history, where everyone will want to explore and have a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Top Left to Bottom Right Spire, Tree Fall, Earth Wall, and Treelines are the four famous artworks that Andy Goldsworthy left behind for the Presidio. These images play a vital role in forming my design. The last picture on the bottom right is the Pershing Square which is the heart of the main post park.

Upon entering the Presidio, we see a forest with many long roads and giant trees. Each path leads people to a different attraction where they can have a unique experience of their choice. The Presidio is not only a former military stronghold but also a habitat for many creatures. It is our refuge where we can retreat from our busy lives and daily hardships. The sound of traffic and the sound from the ocean waves represent our life journey. The hidden palace is a home to come back to but also the motivation for us to move forward. The National Geographic Society is a global nonprofit organization that has had a significant impact on human exploration. It has expanded the boundaries of discovery and our understanding of the world. It has created many meaningful events, fundings, and products for the community to build a sustainable future. Although their magazine has covered many remote places on earth, there are still many hidden places waiting to be revealed. There is no dead-end in the journey, and there is only the destination.

With the idea “a hidden place, the design will have multiple partitions to define the boundaries of each space in the exhibition. Layered translucent partitions symbolize the mist of the forest. Moreover, the interior circulation will incorporate a combination of free-flow and loop layouts to guide people through each area at ease. Every path in the building will be connected to an open space where visitors will experience the history and nature of the landmark.

Stepped inside the building, the visitors will experience a feeling of walking inside the giant redwood forest. The light and material will play a significant role in expressing this design. Inspired by the idea of the hidden place in a forest, the reception will symbolize the guide board before people enter the forest. The exhibition will locate on the right side with multiple translucent black partitions. These walls represent the foggy weather of San Francisco. Moving to the next space, people will have a chance to stop at the retail store to buy souvenir items. The ending space on the first floor is the cafe store where everyone can relax and have lunch.

The reason why the layout looks like this is because, as a designer, we want to put the core structure to the center of the building because it will provide a smooth circulation and easy access from all of the surrounding areas. Moreover, the design layout is logically arranged based on studies from human behavior. In the Western, people always tend to turn right every time they enter a building. The exhibit is the most attractive and central area that the National Geographic wants the visitors to visit; Therefore, it will be located on the right. After a long adventure from the exhibit, the viewers will want to go to a shop where they can buy some souvenirs. Cafe store will be an ideal place for the end of the visit. It is where people can sit and relax after a long day.

On the right-hand side of the reception is the exhibit area. In this space, people will have a chance to view the Hubble space photographs from NASA. All of the pictures will be printed on aluminum sheets and mounted on customizing glass partitions. The foggy weather in San Francisco inspires the idea of using frosted glass partition to illustrated the dim of the hidden place inside a vast forest.

Retail Store

Next to the exhibit area is the retail store where everyone can buy souvenir items. In this area, everything is a bit brighter than all of the other spaces on the first floor. The reason for choosing a white birch for the retail store is because it helps people to see everything more comfortable. Moreover, it also changes the mood of viewers after a long walk from a dark space. If the exhibition area is a night forest, then the retail store is the look of the woods in the morning with the glare of sunshine.

Walked to the second floor, once again, people will see the repeat of the hidden place concept like what they have experienced on the first floor. They will see a large reception desk which makes from wood and black granite. These materials symbolized the trees and trees’ shadow. On the ceiling, the hanging wood blocks help people to visualize the image of the forest a bit easier. On the left of the second floor is a range of private spaces that design in the shape of multiple boxes. From the imagination, there will be caves and boxes inside the hidden place of a forest. These boxes will serve as a place where people can stay and enjoy their adventure. Plaster is the material for these offices because it represents stone and soil in nature.

Private Offices

Top Concept sketches of the box inside the office space Bottom A view the reception area to the left side of the 2nd floor which is an arrange private offices

Due to the limited ceiling height because of the mechanical systems such as ducts and pipes, leaving the ceiling exposed is the best option. Same as the first floor, the center of the second floor is for core structure such as restroom, janitor room, elevator, meeting room, phonebooth space, and kitchenette. Walked to the right side of the second floor are the workspaces and conference rooms. It is the side where people can see the Golden Gate Bridge and the ocean view. Moreover, the office will be designed with a smart glazing partition system where people can control the clarity of the glass.

The second floor of the building is the National Geographic office. Stepped out the elevator, people will see the reception desk and a wall design which are made of wood. Moreover, people will also see that there is a lot of hanging wood pieces on the ceiling. Once again, it looks like people are stepping into another place inside a vast forest.

Kitchenette & Open Workspace

After passing through the private offices’ area are the kitchenette and open workspaces. In these areas, everything looks bigger and broader from the utilized of the exposed ceiling. Moreover, the free space conveys a more comfortable and lively feeling to the employees. It also looks more modern when the steel frames restrict the overuse of wood in all of the designs.

Senior Living Center An eco-friendly and welcoming center for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients

14

In this project, the mission is to redesign two stories building into a senior living center located in Chinatown, Oakland. The average age of the residents is expected to be 75 years and suffer Alzheimer’s disease. The center will provide private condominiums, community activity spaces, a dining facility, and on-site nursing care.

These are the examples of how the idea of Mandalas can be visualized from architecture Top-Left Dome by Inessa Top-Right Pennsylvania State Capitol’s dome Bottom Dome by Paul Redding

Inspired from the meaning of Mandala, the design brings the idea of the circle of life to the indoor space. It will deliver a positive and energetic feeling to people who work and live in this building. The curvy and circular design of the interior space also symbolizes the reconnected of life from an ending. Even though this is a senior living center but each individual can also find their own space within it. Beside relax and meditation, the Mandalas helps people to eliminate negative thinking and allows people to look at the bright side of a problem, especially for Alzheimer patients.

Since the purpose of this design is to create a healthy living center for Alzheimer’s seniors, the center of the building is a great place to put a gym and a community room. This space will provide an opportunity for seniors to connect and interact with each other. This space expresses a no boundary feeling to the patient by using glazing walls. Moreover, the glass partition also served as signage for the patient who has a short-term memory.

The first floor is an area that mainly served the community. It is the floor where people will see the reception, gym, community room, commercial kitchen, dining, public restroom, nurse office. The reason why these areas will be located on the first floor is because of egress. Since this will be a center for A.D.A and Alzheimer patients, they will meet lots of difficulties if some of the community spaces located on the second floor. A sophisticated and mixed layout will create a hard time for people to memorize the area and exit the building if there is a fire hazard.

The second floor is a floor of 6 private apartments, a library, and a staff office. Same as the community room and the gym, the library is served as an area that connects everyone. It is a space where the patients can access right after they walk out of their apartment. Moreover, the reason a staff office is located on this floor to provide fast support service to the patients.

Audi Experience A project that expressed a passion for the future design in 2040

20

AUDI project is a cooperative project that includes two industrial, two web designers, and four interior designers in a team. Our mission was to create a design that expressed the passion for cars and the future urban environment in 2040. Our final products included a car design, UX/UI design, residential design, and commercial design. For the interior design, our team has to provide the most experiential of reality from future technology.

Top Origami artwork from Tomohiro Tachi Bottom The exterior view of the experience center for AUDI

Inspired from Origami structure and artworks, mainly from Tomohiro Tachi, we build up the 3D models for the experience center and residential design with multiple angular shapes. We believe in the future, the design of architecture will be more complex and challenging like the shape of an origami. Why we choose the origami idea is because this is a very flexible form that can transform into multiple objects in just a blink of an eye. Moreover, since the industrial design team decided to design a car that can be driven on the rail track, the shape of the rail also has a similar angular shape to the origami. We realized that the future environment has an intimate relation to adaptable, flexible, and transformable form.

They will experience all of the driving tests and tours in one room without traveling to the race track like the nowadays design.

Inside the experience center, it consists of multiple spaces such as reception, exhibit, theater, cafe, garden, digital seating area, restaurant, and office. Looking through the floor plans, people perceive this is a large building with small design spaces. However, it is not because there is a limitation in designing a commercial building. The reason why we left the area empty is to yield for the structure of the railway, which is running from the outside to the inside of the building. The customer will have the first time experience of driving a vehicle inside a building and view every space with their car.

Based on the study of Audi’s future client, we recognized that we have to design a high-end pen house for a residential project. This penthouse will be a smart house that maximizes the luxury and modern in design. Audi’s customers will have a chance to live in this house if they are a premium member. The touch screen and AI technology are located in every corner of the house for convenience purposes, such as seeing the weather, calling the car, etc. The shapes of the furniture and ceiling patterns remind people of the origami concept. Moreover, since it is in 2040, the lighting design will have a significant impact on the house. It is the element that creates a futuristic feeling for the interior.

By looking at the rendering images on the right-hand side for the residence, people can easily recognize that we wan to deliver the idea of no boundary to the interior of the building when we have utilized multiple glazing exterior walls. Moreover, glazing walls will give the clients a chance to live closer to the future environment. People will experience the energetic and active design every time they open their eyes in the morning. They can stand inside their own space and enjoy the view of the whole city. 25

Mariotto Residence A touch of contemporary design for a heritage building.

26

Mariotto residence is a project that required the designer to remodel and redesign three different units in a three stories house. Under the basement floor, I proposed a design with rustic and comfortable space for the senior client. On the first floor, the client preferred a simple design with creativity. Therefore, I proposed a more modern plan with the monochromatic palette scheme for a family of an architect. On the 2nd floor, I proposed a design with a high contrast color for recognization and emphasize space. The purpose of offering this design because it could create harmony and balance for a multi-culture family with three different generations.

1st Floor

Peaceful, quiet, warmful, and friendly are all the elements this concept wants to apply to the design area. An Old Friend conduces a welcoming and loving feeling to everyone when they step inside the building. A warm neutral color palette of wood and lighting fixtures will bring a warmful, relax, and rustic atmosphere to the clients. Whitewall and black stainless steel also used to create a contemporary angle of interior architecture. Also, some cool color furniture with blue and green colors will be used to generate harmony for the design.

27

2nd Floor

28

Inspiring from the quote “less is more by Robert Browning, the purity of art conveys a simple and contemporary design using a monochromatic palette scheme, punctuated with color. Free and crisp are those first feelings when people view this design. Furthermore, the organic edges and abstract art of a dark painting also plays into the concept.

The monochromatic of black and white makes the design looks both classic and straightforward. The simple is coming from the limited choices of colors inside a space. It conveys a fresh idea for interior design nowadays. It is like a drawing when an artist plays with the positive and negative space in an artwork. Moreover, the black and white also represent the color of yin and yang, which symbolized the harmony of life. On the other side, the design also brings a classic feeling to the client when these colors were the colors of the television screen in the 20th century.

29

3rd Floor

30

Balance is always a fundamental requirement, but it is still hard to achieve in life. For example, the relationship between each generation and the relationships between jobs and private life. The concept wants to create an atmosphere that reminds the client of the significant role of each factor in life, and balance is needed. Harmony and respect are what the balance wants to design for the interior space. This design will have an essential requirement of stability and efficiency of material choices from the forms, color, to the function of the material. Many complementary colors, such as blue and orange, yellow, and violet will be used to balance the design. Furthermore, the complementary colors also represent the competition between materialistic and love.

Different than the design for the second floor, the third floor has a very unique and colorful design for the interior space. The complementary of blue and orange create a strong emphasis for every area. Moreover, these colors are an excellent palette for multiple generations family because it looks both modern and traditional. The texture and color of the floor tile in the bathroom and office rewind people to the memory from 1980.
