The sexy and sophisticated 9th Floor Restaurant & Bar Parked on the 9th floor of a skyscraper in the heart of Patong, the 9th Floor Restaurant & Bar features a unique open-air setting and stylish atmosphere. Its floor-to-ceiling sliding windows afford magnificent views of the surrounding terrain and refreshing sea breezes. The restaurant is quite sleek and chic, mainly decorated in black, with navy blue velvet supersized chairs and touches of colorful art pieces on the walls throughout. We arrived a little bit before sundown when impeccably dressed waitresses were about to finish off the romantic touches with dim lights and candles. We set ourselves at the table next to the opened window, which is the best position from which to watch the city move from day to night as the sun slowly goes down and all the city’s lights come to contrast the fantastic colors of the sunset. A friendly waitress lit the candle on our table and her well-trained manner only added to the high-end appeal of this upscale dining experience. The menu is an ambitious collection of well executed Western classics including award-winning Mediterranean food, Alpine specialties and selected Thai dishes for an Asian twist. They also

offer an impressive wine list of over 200 labels. Wines are all on display in the large wine cellar. I ordered Sea Bass Brazino for something light. The dish was served not long after the order was taken. There is an impressive number of waitresses and kitchen staff providing fast, efficient and courteous service. The presentation of the dish was wonderful: two thick fish filets served with sweet chili sauce. Lightly crispy on the outside, the fish is soft, lean and firm as well as aromatic. It goes very well with the delicious herbal sauce. Another treat of the night was a classic Cordon Bleu. You have your own choice of pork, chicken or veal. This classic Swiss dish combines chicken breast, ham and hard cheese fried to crispy golden goodness. This is an excellent choice for anyone who loves classic flavors. The restaurant is open till late; so after dinner, enjoy the cool breath of the tropical ocean breeze while sipping a glass of wine or a cocktail. If you are one of those who have a passion for sweets, there are a number of sinful desserts. The restaurant easily fills up each night so reservations are strongly recommended. Convenient parking is available for peace of mind.

Belgian flair at Brasserie Phuket

The delightful Brasserie Phuket is conveniently nestled in Phuket town on Rassada Road, near the circle at Baan San fresh market. The chic interior of the restaurant is outstanding. Its excellent space allocation combined with a tasteful design makes Brasserie Phuket a charming place to visit even before you taste the sumptuous cuisine. You will find an oyster bar waiting near the entrance of the restaurant; while farther inside a drink bar serves up hundreds of Belgian beers next to a small but well-stocked wine room. Parallel to the bar on your left-hand side through the arc is the dining area decorated in a Belgian brasserie style. It offers about ten tables that can be transformed to handle either couples or large groups. The decoration is based in warm tones with a stylish long leather sofa and a number of arc mirrors on the wall as the highlights. For those who prefer private dining, walk farther to the end of the main room and you will find the quieter air-conditioned area that has been styled to imitate a beautiful backyard patio.

Be sure to save room for the amazing array of Belgian beers.

Restaurant Preview  28

Brasserie Phuket’s menu is not that long but comprises a little bit of this and that to fulfill your dining desires. Try some of the delicacies: Frog Legs in sizzling garlic-butterparsley, Duck Liver Pâté, Salmon Soup, or steaks available from 100

grams to 2 kilograms, lamb, rib roast with choices of sauce, and much more. The restaurant boasts a specialty of Mussels from Brussels. They are cooked Belgian style with white wine and onions. Remind yourself not to enjoy the meal so much that there isn’t room for the various Belgian beers. Brasserie Phuket offers most of the famous names of draught-beer such as Stella Artois, Hoegaarden, and Leffe. One of the most popular bottled Belgian beers, Duvel can be found here. Lambic beer with a touch of cherries, Kriek is also worth a try. You can check out the venue’s special dishes on the blackboard or ask the chef for a recommendation if you don’t know where to start. On the day we visited, specials were the fresh white snapper or river prawn cooked the way you like, whether with garlic, chili, or curry butter. Asparagus prepared in a Flemish style is a traditional and very good way to enjoy white asparagus. Charcoaled grilled live Canadian lobster, US imported tenderloin and pork rib are also good choices. There are not many desserts as the main focus is on the Belgian beers. However, ask for chocolate mousse, Belgian waffles or ice cream Dame Blanche if you want to indulge your sweet tooth.

Authentic Italian fine dining at La Casa Pizzeria e Ristorante

La Casa is a long established Italian restaurant located at the center of hectic Patong on Thaweewongse Road. Offering about 80 seats of air-conditioned and al fresco dining, the restaurant is under the lead of Executive Chef Guido Orben who grew up in a restaurateur family. Chef Guido has an extensive culinary background in traditional Italian cuisine and experience working with many famous restaurants around the world, including Japan where he gained some valuable experiences over the course of 15 years. Chef Guido brought along his culinary skills and great attitude towards Italian cuisine across the sea to settle at La Casa on this paradise island. He prefers to conceal complicated methods in his kitchen and keeps the appearance of each dish clean and simple so that you can comfortably savor true Italian taste.

Chef Guido has an extensive culinary background in traditional Italian cuisine.

Looking for something to start? Try Bauletto Di Polenta Ripieno Di Gorgonzola (300 baht). It is a trunk of corn pastry stuffed with Italian blue cheese, Shitake mushroom, flavored black truffle and juniper, served hot. A cut on the pastry lets the lava of cheese out and the dish can be paired well with a glass of Argiolas Costamolino Vermentino di Sardegna. If you don’t know much about wine, a friendly restaurant manager can guide you to the best wines for your meal. For the main course, Raviolo Aperto Alla Moda Di Gualtiero (400 baht) is an excellent choice. It is a fusion food created by Chef Guido’s teacher and idol, Italian renowned Chef Gualtiero. Freshly made open ravioli with soft and meaty scallops and a delicious ginger sauce served in a simple and clean look is simply delightful. Chateaubriand Beef Fillet Scented Herbs & Foie Gras is also available at 800 baht. Fagottino Di Mele Alla Cannella in Salsa Vanigliata (250 baht), an apple dumpling with cinnamon and vanilla sauce, has a balanced sour-sweet taste that is the perfect end to your culinary session. Order a glass of sweet wine to pair with this and your meal will surely be another delicious journey to remember. Crème Brûlée (250 baht) and Dark Chocolate Cake in Orange Sauce (300 baht) are also a nice try. La Casa features a nice selection of Italian and French wines and a cocktail bar for those who would like to linger a little longer after dinner. Live music by an Italian musician adds to the romantic atmosphere. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner from 10am until late at night.

Casual dining with a professional touch at Two Chefs Kata Beach, well known for offering an array of diverse experiences, is not only a natural attraction for tourists but also holds great appeal for celebrity chefs. There are numerous celebrity chef-owned restaurants that are as delightful to the eyes as their cuisine is to the palate. Gaining a reputation among the competition here is quite a challenge. With over ten years and three branches, Two Chefs have more than shown success. The first restaurant is situated south of Kata just opposite The Boathouse while the second and the latest one are both near Karon Circle and close to Dino Park, respectively.

The Skagen à la Two Chefs, classic Swedish toast with prawns, mayo and chili, was just simply delicious.

Restaurant Preview  32

Just a few minutes’ walk from the beachfront to the back of The Boathouse, we were welcome by the gracious staff into Two Chefs. The restaurant features a simple openair dining room seating roughly a hundred guests comfortably. The best selections of international dishes including Scandinavian specialties and exquisite Thai cuisine are all the outcome of some grueling hard work and incredible talent. The Skagen à la Two Chefs, classic Swedish toast with prawns, mayo and chili, was just simply delicious. There is a great list of main courses you may enjoy. As a big meat-lover, the Chateau Brian was my choice. A huge portion served with a potato pie, the imported steak was moist, succulent, and extremely tender.

The wine list is also exceptional and has imported New and Old World wines. Prices are fairly standard and there is always a special wine of the month offer. Two Chefs restaurant knows that good food must be accompanied by a great atmosphere. So the mood is set with live music nightly by a famous Filipino duo. There are also special promotions like Cowboy Night on Monday, when the staff dresses up in cowboy gear and a large American TexMex buffet is served at just 495 baht per person. Two Chefs also serves brunch from midday till 3pm. They tell us it’s “probably the best brunch in the world” – so why don’t you check it out? No matter what, it’s crucial that you don’t fill up before you’ve had the Meringue Swiss ice cream! Additionally, watch out for Two Chefs monthly theme! They have a Blues & BBQ special under a New Orleans theme in October and, of course, a big Halloween event. Monday, 30 October 2011, the Special Halloween Night at Two Chefs Kata Center features a large international buffet at 595 baht per adult and 250 baht for children 3-12 years. There will be prizes for the Best Costume competition. Check out their updates on promotions and events on their website.

Idyllic dining at On the Beach If you are looking for a truly spectacular beachside dining experience in Phuket, you’ll want to head to On the Beach restaurant. On the Beach is just as its name was given, located on the beach at Karon Beach Resort & Spa. The restaurant is an idyllic place for those who would like to escape from the noise of the crowd and the roaring sound of vehicle engines in the island’s most popular tourist area. The restaurant is set at the end the beach so it ensures the utmost in privacy and provides fantastic views of the Andaman Sea, especially the gorgeous sunsets that seem to change daily. The only sound you will hear is the relaxing sound of the waves hitting the sandy beach. On the Beach restaurant is famous among tourists for its quality and standard of service. The restaurant serves international cuisine and Thai specialties. The menu is revised occasionally to avoid monotony. One of the recommended dishes is Chili Steak: the marinated rib eye steak is presented in an oriental style flambé with Thai whisky, served with garlic chili crème sauce. Thai spices make the flavor of the marbled meat tastier.

Spicy Papaya Salad and Crispy Salmon is a delicious twist on a famous Thai dish.

Another creation of the master Thai chef is Oven Lamb Chop with Siam Fresh Herb, served with wasabi soft polenta, French beans and a savory raspberry sauce. Meanwhile the delicious Tournedos Rossini comes in a refreshing look: grilled tender meat with foie gras served on pâté crouton and rich mushroom sauce. Spicy Papaya Salad and Crispy Salmon is a delicious twist on a famous Thai dish. Papaya Salad, or Som Tum in Thai, is known as a local favorite. The degree of spiciness has been lightened to meet the palate of foreign diners. On the Beach restaurant also features international favorites such as spaghetti and pizza as well famous Thai specialties such as Satay Ruam Mit: an appetizer with beef, chicken and pork satay served with peanut sauce and cucumber vinegar sauce. Tom Yum Goong is the spicy prawn soup everyone raves about in Thailand and it is served hot and spicy here. Pla Krapong Nuang Ma-now is steamed white snapper with garlic and chili sauce that works as an excellent main dish with jasmine rice. Also try the Gaeng-Ped Gai Yang, roasted chicken green curry with coconut milk and mixed fruits; or Hor mok Talay Ma Pow On, steamed curry seafood with young coconut and vegetables. For a quick meal before or after swimming, there are plenty of rice and noodle dishes as well. On the Beach is open daily from noon to 10:30pm.

Sea.Fire.Salt. and the Chef’s passion What I would say after a conversation with Executive Chef Justin Maiklem, is that passion is an ingredient for success. A few weeks ago I went to Sea.Fire.Salt. at Anantara Phuket Villas, where I realized that having a nice dinner is something meaningful and experienced how much passion can be nurtured into a profession. Originally from Australia, Chef Justin’s culinary interest started Early; “I knew I was interested in cooking and the kitchen atmosphere at a fairly early age”. He explained that the influence of the kitchen taught him much more than cooking, “Many people don’t realize that there are so many different sides to being a chefwhich I love.” He headed to London and worked for the famed Dorchester Hotel in Mayfair where he cooked for world Celebrities and the royal family including the Queen of England and Princess Diana. Justin then went on to work privately for the Sultan of Brunei and his family before moving to the Park Hotel in Vitznau, Switzerland. Chef Justin explained that creativity and discipline in the kitchen have taken him around the world and have provided inspiration and motivation. He mentioned; “opening the Crown Casino in Melbourne with a brigade of 547 chefs with 27 restaurants was an amazing experience.”

Restaurant Preview  36

After spending four years at the Hilton Rangali Maldives (now the Conrad) Justin sought new challenges on this tropical island of the Andaman Sea. Living by the sea here ignites his enthusiasm for the dishes at Sea. Fire.Salt. that make this up market eatery even more unique. Justin explained that salt is such an important element of life that it has been used by human beings for ages, especially for cooking. There are so many kinds of salts in the world. Their locations reflect different characteristics and each complement the subtleties of our unique dishes. This maybe something new for most, but once you are here just relax and let the salt sommelier tell you stories about the magic of his salt collection. Our meal started with the Poached & Chilled Seafood Bucket, a combination of scallops, mussels and crab (you can make your own choices like international oysters, for instance) slowly poached and served on ice consisting of freshly crushed lemongrass, coriander and lime served with a delicious roasted tomato aioli. This bucket really contains tastes of the sea that are a solid reprieve from a stressful day.

This pure salt is found deep inside the pristine Himalayan Mountains and contains a beneficial amount of 84 trace elements and iron. Next up was sushi and sashimi served on a large Himalayan salt block that delivers unique depth and complexity of flavor. Our salt sommelier explained that this pure salt is found deep inside the pristine Himalayan Mountains. It contains a beneficial amount of 84 trace elements and iron and goes well with fish and seafood. Chef Justin told us that the salt brick continuously adds flavor to the food, so we should not leave our sushi on it too long. For those who like red meat, the best salt is Hawaiian sea salt as the clay imparts a subtle flavor more mellow than regular sea salt. Chef Justin came to check on us during the meal. I noticed that he was busy walking in and out of the kitchen, talking to guests. When I asked what the biggest challenge of being a chef is, he said, “constantly staying fresh in Phukets competitive climate.” It is clear that he really loves what he is doing, appreciates his team, and is always full of stories and much laughter. Make your way to Sea.Fire.Salt. for an unforgettable meal by an incredible chef.

Traditional meets modern at Sawasdee Thai Cuisine

Travelling teaches us that sometimes reaching the destination is not more important than the experiences we gain along the way. Dining is similar, with the experience making the meal. Sawasdee Thai Cuisine at Sawasdee Village will make your trip to Phuket a memorable one. The restaurant has been decorated in an authentic Thai style lending to an atmosphere of charming ancient Thai culture. You will see valuable art pieces as décor throughout the restaurant. The adjacent pond helps soften the area and cools down the temperature.

The restaurant has been decorated in an authentic Thai style lending to an atmosphere of charming ancient Thai culture.

Although the ambience guides you to a feel of the past, in contrast you will be amazed by the creative modern ideas of the owner. At Sawasdee Thai Cuisine, you can order food from the iMenu on an iPad. The iMenu provides you color photos and some information about each dish so that you can be best informed about what you are going to order. The iMenu application even allows you share photos of your meal with your friends on social networks; and the iPad can help to kill some time constructively as you await the arrival of your cuisine. As an appetizer, Toong Tong is always a favorite. The crispy ‘golden bags’ will surely be a treat for everyone. Main dishes are also delectable; try Laab Pla Salmon, fresh salmon spiced with herbs in the Northeastern style. Penang Goong is also a good choice to go with hot aromatic steamed jasmine rice. There is also a set menu comprised of popular dishes in single portions for a quick meal. Those looking for a romantic dining experience are advised to head to Al Majlis. Talk with staff and they can prepare a dinner in a special private setting at Al Majlis located deep in the resort. Dining here, you will enjoy the luxurious Thai and Arabian atmosphere as Al Majlis has been designed to reflect the atmosphere of a mystic Arabian party tent. Staff are attentive but also know when to respect your privacy during a romantic meal. Never miss a chance to take a tour around the resort. Sawasdee Village is different from the other resorts in Phuket and is the only one that perfectly presents in Arabian and Thai style. The resort is a breathtaking destination by itself. Sawasdee Thai Cuisine is open daily from 6am to 11pm, for all-day dining. 39  www.phuket4seasons.com
