Portfolio ARCHIT TECTUR RE - INTERIOR DESIGN 2015 - 2020 PHUNG HONG

Phung Hong (402)-440-2001 phungtaihong@gmail.com

With an undergraduate degree in interior design and a graduate degree in architecture, these degrees have oered me a unique perspective on the built environment and the people who inhabit it. I am excited to continue to make connections between these degrees towards enhancing the human experience. Design is one of the most powerful forces in our lives and can trigger the physical, physiological and psychological wellbeing. As modern society citizens spend 90 percent of their time indoors, buildings and urban spaces should be designed around their occupants. Design should address growing societal needs including aordability and sustainability towards a sensible yet enduring architecture. The discipline of architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture help shape the built environment. To participate in the built environment, one must consider not only space but experience through social and cultural identities. Additionally, the design of the built environment must continually consider the historic and scientific influences while looking towards the future. I am a sensitive designer who is passionate about the potential that design has for human wellbeing. With this passion and dedication to the built environment I am excited to apply the knowledge I have learned in school to the profession of architecture.

Alliance is a city in Box Butte County, in the Northwestern part of the state of Nebraska, in the Great Plains region of the United States. Its population was 8,491 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Box Butte County. Alliance is facing an aging population problem. Lack of healthcare, education, and job opportunities draw younger generations to bigger towns. By focusing on several aspects such as Civic, Commercial, and Residential, the intention of the project is to create programs that support community Healthcare/Wellness in small towns.

SUBURBAN ARCHITECTURE:

BEE RESEARCH FACILITY Professor: David Karle Team Member: Darin Hanigan Brooke Sayler Award: • SARA New York - Unbuilt Suburban Project - 2017 • SARA National Design Award - Unbuilt Suburban Project - 2017

Our intention is to give back to the rural landscape. We are creating an environment for a therapeutic and unique opportunity to bee keep and provide education of bees. The program, along with architecture, interacts with the existing landscape in order to educate and encourage interaction with the rural environment. The challenge in this project is to create a calm environment and to provide enough nutrition for bee living habitat.

INTERIOR DESIGN - CAPSTONE PROJECT:

THE HUB Professor: Tom Allisma

The design goal is to create a place where people can have a relaxing time reading their book within their privacy zone but still able to communicate with others if needed. The Branding comes from the facts below: • People come to the library because they want to have their own place, with privacy, to enjoy reading books • They also want the chance to get involved with people in their community at the same time The Hub represents private space to individuals but also demonstrates a place where people can gather together to enjoy the books. Transformation is the main concept of “The Hub” because of: • The changing of the Haymarket area at downtown Lincoln from a historical area to the mixture of modern and historical pieces we see nowadays • The influence of technology on people’s reading habit • The changing in size from traditional libraries to compact libraries

The diversity of program types which exist within a strip mall can attract many different users. Our program is intended to take that diversity of users which already exists within the strip mall environment and strengthen the relationship. Through activities that are creative based, we look to create opportunityies for the users to take advantage of resources they might not otherwise have access to. Part of this creative program would also give an opportunity for those users to utilize vacant space within the strip mall’s first floor, thus creating opportunity for local business growth

Black Hills, based in Rapid City, South Dakota, provides natural gas service to Lincoln and more than 300 cities and towns in Nebraska. The project started with a new center in Lincoln, and small offices at Papillion and Cheyenne. The project then led to a big headquarter in Council Bluffs, and 18 offices in small cities around Nebraska. The intention is to allow better control costs and position Black Hill Engergy services well to continue to be committed to serving customers across Nebraska.

02 OMAHA PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL Team member: Aaron Persen - Project Manager Amy Railey - Project Architect Scotty Kalb - Project Designer Adam Post - Project Designer Phung Hong - Project Designer Location: Omaha, Nebraska Complete Date: 2022 - 2023 Responsibilities: Construction document Code Research

The school located at 60th and L will be 285,000 square feet, sit on 40.52 acres of land and cost $92.4 million to build. The three-story school will have a capacity of 1,500 students. The classrooms will be on all three floors of the building, with many of the rooms having abundant natural light. School administrators won’t work out of a centralized office at the front of the building but will be situated throughout the building so they’re closer to students.

03 C Y THOMPSON LIBRARY Team member: Scott Shiffermiller - Project Manager Choan Liewer - Project Architect Phung Hong - Project Designer Location: Lincoln, Nebraska Complete Date: January 2021 Responsibilities: Code Research Construction Document

The library was built in the 1960s and is inefficient energy-wise, with poor access for those with disabilities. Libraries used to be built as fortresses to protect the books. Now the focus is on people. A place to gather, to learn, and to discover. The updated CYT will include individual and collaborative study spaces, a cafe, learning technology, multi-media displays, meeting rooms, and a multi-disciplinary book collection.

Location: Blair, Nebraska Complete Date: On Hold Responsibilities: Schematic Massing Design Construction Document Site Planning

Located in Blair, Nebraska, the goal is to design a modern affordable apartment with 2 and 3 bedroom units. The project was divided into 2 separate phases. • Phase 1 with 5 apartment buildings and 1 clubhouse • Phase 2 with 5 apartment buildings, sharing the same clubhouse as phase 1 By placing more amenities in common areas, our team wants to create an apartment complex that is truly more affordable while also being appealing to residents.
