men go down the pub, these feelings are right at the surface so they use arguments or fights as a way to get these feelings out. This gives temporarily relief, but they are soon replaced with a whole new set of emotions and feelings to deal with and the spiral continues. If you choose to drink alcohol, do so only in moderation. Too much alcohol can raise your blood pressure. Illicit drug taking is on the rise. Drugs are part of our culture, whether we chose to admit it or not, they are not going away. A recent survey showed that cocaine consumption is the highest per head of population in Scotland compared with the rest of Europe. This means there is a supply and most certainly a demand.

Men’s Health

Thankfully, most men’s health threats are largely preventable: make healthy lifestyle choices, such as eating a healthy diet and including physical activity in your daily routine. It’s also important to manage risky behaviour, such as drinking, drug use and engaging in casual sex

Drinking alcohol produces acetaldehyde, which is broken down by the liver and is excreted by the body in a number of ways. The most widely dual used substance on the increase is alcohol and cocaine. What seems irrefutable is that the two drugs can “stretch the good times”, as one regular cocaine and alcohol binger told me “I can drink for ever on coke”. This increasingly dangerous cocktail produces a highly toxic chemical in the liver called coca-ethylene. This chemical is extremely harmful to the body and there is a growing suspicion that the drug and alcohol combo may be responsible for the perceived increase in the number of people in their 30s suffering heart problems. LANIMERS in SEPTEMBER ?!? BY Nikki Lambie

So as another Lanimers drew to a close last week, the Royal Burgh of Lanark was left with a huge sense of pride, a feeling of community and the reassurance that they still knew how to throw a good party! But have you ever thought about all the work that goes on behind the scenes. To be honest I hadn’t until this year, I now have the utmost respect for the individuals in our community that dedicate months getting ready for Lanark’s main attraction. The hours of planning, preparation and of course the time it takes to build the Lorries is immense – so thank you to everyone one of you that make this possible each year. My insight into Lanimers came this year from Karen Tenant who I work with at Clydesdale Community Initiatives. Karen is Lanark born

and bred and has been involved with Lanimers since she was a child and took part in Lanark Primary’s entry. Since then it’s been very much a family affair When Karen’s own children started to take part she worked with the team building the Lorries and this year was the first year that she took over the full organisation of the entry for Lanark primary’s lorry – Lunar Mars. Work on the lorry started just two months after last year’s Lanimers in September! Over 40,000 flowers have to be hand cut and sculpted to create their entry this year not to mention the work that went into the frame work for the Shuttle and Flying saucer nor the organisation behind the costumes and

attendees etc. Battered, bruised and burnt the team battled through accidents with glue guns and last minute design changes to create their 2013 entry. The whole team involved would like to thank everyone that assisted with this year’s entry and to thank the community for their support on the day. It was about time we had the good weather for Lanimers and what a difference it made – here’s hoping we get more of the same next year.

Samsung UE55F8000 review Samsung's debut 2013 TV raises the bar For years, Samsung 8000-series TVs have enjoyed the reputation as amongst the finest TVs available, with a vivid picture quality. That is still the case with the F8000 today. With standard 3D, the UE55F8000 is better than ever with more convincing and brighter 3D images. The Samsung also offers the option of watching standard 2D video converted to 3D. Whether you’re watching in 3D or 2D, the picture quality is the best yet from a Samsung LED screen. Helping the UE55F8000 achieve its class best picture is a feature called Micro Dimming Ultimate. This optimises contrast for deeper blacks and brighter whites. It also brings out levels of detail that would have previously been lost. In addition to Micro Dimming Ultimate, Samsung has worked hard to improve the picture quality with streamed video. As a result, the UE55F8000 now supports the HEVC High Compression video codec and offers class-leading picture performance with streamed videos. Other technologies that enhance the picture include Ultra Clear Panel and Clear Motion Rate 1000. The Ultra Clear Panel does as expected and eliminates the grimy look that can afflict some panels. Clear Motion, meanwhile, gets to grips with motion blur and scans the image so fast that blurred sports action is a thing of the past. With a refresh rate that’s up from 800 to 1000Hz, images really are smoother than ever. IMPROVED SOUND QUALITY Although such a slim TV is never going to be able to offer sound that matches the picture, Samsung has worked hard to improve the audio performance. The UE55F8000 now features a powerful 40 watt amplifier with lower notes boosted by the built-in 2x10 watt subwoofer. S RECOMMENDATION S Recommendation technology lets you discover more of the TV you love by suggesting what’s new to watch based on

what you like. It intelligently learns your preferences and instantly searches Live TV, video on demand services and apps to recommend TV and on line content tailored to you. Now you’ll always know what’s on without the need to look for it. SMART HUB As soon as you turn your TV on, Samsung’s Smart Hub provides immediate access to your favourite programmes through the ON TV panel. It intelligently organises and manages all your content into five easy to navigate panels. The intuitive interface uses vibrant thumbnails to provide instant previews to help you quickly and easily select what you want to watch. The five panels include: On TV; Movies & TV Shows; Photos, Videos & Music; Social; Apps. SMART EVOLUTION Your TV is Future Ready with Samsung’s Smart Evolution. Unique to Samsung, the Smart Evolution Kit completely re-engineers your TV without you having to replace it. Now you can renew your TV to the latest technology in

terms of performance, content and features, ensuring your TV remains cutting edge for a fraction of the cost of a new TV. INTELLIGENT VIEWING Intelligent viewing technology lets you enjoy best-in-class picture quality regardless of source or type of content that you’re viewing. As it reduces picture imperfections related to the source and optimises the picture clarity based on the type of content your viewing, all you need to do is sit back, relax and enjoy what you’re watching. SMART INTERACTION Smart Interaction lets you interact with your TV in a whole new way through advanced Voice and Motion control. Simply talk to your TV to control it or, using everyday language, just ask it to find you something to watch for an amazing personalised TV experience. The Motion control lets you simply wave at the TV and take charge. You can change channels and the volume level with ease, swipe though the five panel Smart Hub and grab and select the content you want just like you would on any smart mobile device. New two-handed gestures recognition lets you use natural movements to zoom in and out and rotate images and make sharing your latest holiday pictures both easy and fun. For the ultimate in TV tech with style to spare, the Samsung UE55F8000 is a flawless allrounder.

A DOG’S TAIL Don’t get me wrong, I am not a fan of insurance companies. I believe they should have a skull and crossbones in their logo, but at the same time they are a necessary evil. If your dog or any family pet is unwell the first thing the Vet will ask “Is your pet insured?” My little dog Amber became very sick. I am not going into detail but as “sick as a dog” is very true. I have two, two year old Jack Russells; Ava & Amber, my substitute babies. One morning I was watching one of the many money experts on TV suggest that people should avoid paying monthly premiums and self insure. When my husband came home that night I said to him ‘I am going to self insure the dogs. Instead of paying the money to the insurance company, I am going to put the money into a separate account.” To let you understand, when my husband gets home from work, he just wants to sit and a watch a white ball on his TV. This ball can be getting kicked, passed or hit with a stick as long as there is a ball on the screen he is a happy man. He said “that’s good pet but the Man U game is starting in 5 minutes’ Off I went with my plan to self insure. I told everyone who would listen ‘I am going to self-insure’. A couple of days later I found a little puddle of sick on my carpet. I went looking for my dogs and Ava was fine but Amber was hiding and when I found her she was breathing very fast and groaning. I took her down stairs, wrapped her up and put her beside the radiator. But she would not stay there and wanted to go away and hide. It was a Sunday night and as the night went on she became sicker and sicker until she was vomiting blood. I called my vets number and a recording said if you need help redial this number. I called

14

it and made an appointment to go to Vet Referrals in North St, Glasgow. The girl on the telephone said there would be a charge of £135 upwards to see the vet. I took Amber over, the vet saw her and gave her an injection to settle her stomach and sent us home after I had paid £155. I stayed up all night with her and felt so helpless as she became worse. I phoned the local vet at 9 o’clock the following morning and was given an appointment for 11 o’clock The moment the vet saw her she took her from me and said they would have to keep her in. She asked me if she had eaten anything she shouldn’t have and were there any plants missing from the garden. I said, “I had no idea.” She told me to go home and call them later for an update.

afford to pay for Amber. We will not be able to treat her’ I was so shocked, I thought we were a nation of animal lovers. We left Amber with the vet saying ‘please take care of her no matter the cost’. I sobbed all the way home. I know she is just a wee dog but I was heartbroken. My husband drove home like a boy racer who has just passed his test.

When I called the vet, she said, Amber was still very poorly and that she had called the Vet School in Bearsden and they had agreed to admit her for the night but was Amber insured because it could cost anything up to £1500? I said yes and the vet said you might have to pay first before they treat her. I said OK, I called my husband and asked him to meet me at the vets as I would have to hold Amber in the car. My husband said OK but El Classico is on at 7

I called the vet school the next morning and they told me Amber had perked up a little bit and to come and collect her and take her back to my local vet and of course bring payment.

In the car Amber was so poorly I thought she would pass away. I held her and said over and over again all her favourite words like walk, castle (where we walk) and sausages. The first thing the hospital receptionist said is ‘are you insured?” Me? “Yes!”

The total cost of Amber’s poor health was just over £1000. I had to pay this amount first and then claim it back. My Insurance Company charged me an excess of £80. Fortunately that was all it cost me in the end.

After waiting a short time and my husband saying “if we get home for 7:15 we will just miss all the build up, hopefully” The vet examined Amber and said they would have to keep her in and it would cost maybe £150 maybe £250 maybe over a £1000. My husband said at this moment “we do have a spare dog at home, you know and it might be cheaper just to buy another puppy” The vet looked at him astonished not realising my husband was joking and said ‘if you can’t

I took Amber back to the vet and she said ‘we will keep her for today, come back and get her at 4’. When I went back to get her she was weak but a lot better and even managed to wag her tail when she saw me Thankfully she is now healthy and back to her happy little self.

So the moral of this tale is do not give up your pet insurance. Even in these tough economic times it is still a very necessary expense. If anything happens to your pet you would do anything you could to make her well again. This is not an advert for any insurance company it is just my personal opinion. I would hate anyone to lose their pet because they could not pay Vet fees. P.S. My husband got home in time for the start of the football game.
