Growing Pains GROWING up can be tricky for children with puberty in particular an emotional rollercoaster for them and their parents. he hugely popular Pixar film Inside Out takes a peek into the mind of 11-yearold girl, Riley where her five emotions – Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust –try to make sense of the changes she’s going through. Most parents will recognise the bewilderment of Riley’s mum and dad as they see their formerly happy girl turn into a truculent pre-teen struggling to cope with big changes in her life. Girls today enter puberty between nine and 14, while boys usually start between 11 and 15 – although some experts believe boys are also starting to mature earlier, at around nine or ten. It’s also a time when a lot of social changes are taking place as they move into high school. Here, child and adolescent psychologists share their tips on how to help your child through this time. Dr Carol Burniston says: “Parents will see changes in attitude: their children will become more challenging and defiant, and they will feel a strong sense of injustice. “It’s important not to assume you know what is going on in their heads. Ask open questions and acknowledge what’s going on behind their behavior. If they’re being stroppy and slamming doors, don’t tell them not to do that – they are communicating their anger and frustration, and that is a good thing. “You can say: ‘I can see you are upset about this, do you want to talk about it?’” Parents, she says, should make themselves available for when young people do want to open up. “Don’t be so busy they feel they can’t come and talk to you,” she says. “Because they will approach you. Think of them as being attached to you by a long piece of elastic. Sometimes they will stretch it to be as far away as they can, while other times they want to be really close to you, as close as when they were younger children.” She advises parents to step back and let

POCKET MONEY The Annual 2014 Pocket Money Survey by the Halifax revealed that 8 to 15 year olds received an average amount of £6.35 per week.

something significant .Of course you will need to make the possibilities appropriate to their age, and different chores can attract different bonuses depending on the time and effort required.

Whilst parents or guardians were the main givers, a third of those surveyed also received pocket money from grandparents. Thirteen year olds were the most likely age group to receive weekly amounts and boys received more on average than girls. Only a third of children said they would save up for something expensive, most preferring to ask for it as a present. Other surveys such as those by Roosterbank suggest children as young as 3 are getting pocket money. Whatever the amount, pocket money given in the right way can help children to learn the necessary skills and gain the confidence to handle money responsibly. If you are having trouble deciding how much pocket money to give your children, think about what you expect them to pay for from that money. You can involve your children in the decision process. Do you expect them to buy their own sweets and magazines with the money for example, and would this mean that they ended up eating fewer sweets than you currently buy for them which may lead to

Many parents find that the use of a reward chart is helpful, particularly for younger children as it shows clearly the financial benefits of completing extra tasks.

healthier choices? Or would you prefer to buy this type of thing and money will be for ‘special extras’ only? Commonly a basic payment plus bonus system is recommended. This includes a fixed amount which is given as long as children do certain expected things, perhaps keep their rooms tidy and do their homework for example. It is then ‘topped’ up by extra amounts if children do additional chores or achieve

Having regular conversations about what children are doing with their money, what they want to buy and why they want it is also important. This can help them understand the value of things much more clearly than when you pay for things for them because they have to decide whether to buy x or y. If you can bear it, it really is best to let them learn from their financial mistakes. Whilst many children will have a splurge when they first start receiving pocket money, as they get used to it they tend to become more careful about their choices. You can also help stimulate their thinking by talking about how you budget.

Windows 10

Several

factors will influence the decision to upgrade your machine if you happen to be one of those fortunate people running Windows 7 or 8.1 with the offer of a free upgrade. Note: XP and Vista users will need to pay to upgrade and you will have to do a clean install. These users should examine their system capabilities to determine the value of upgrading versus replacing their computer. The main concern for many users who are looking to upgrade is loss of data. The good news is that Windows 10 install itself into a new directory and brings your files and setting with it, but, retains your old installation. So, if it does go wrong you can revert it back to your previous version. A word of caution however, Before you schedule your Windows 10 download, you should create a full backup of your PC. As seamless as the process is designed to be, there is always room for failure, and you wouldn’t want to lose all your data in the process. Make sure you have your Windows product key for your current install, as a precaution against any installation file corruption issues that can arise. There may also be issues with driver

Advertising Feature

compatibility when performing an upgrade. Not all Hardware manufacturers have fully updated drivers for Windows 10 and some systems can experience issues with graphics, sound, wireless access etc. But the benefits of upgrade definitely outweigh the cons. Even so, you have a full year to make the decision to change, plenty of time for those of us who like to ensure that all the bugs will have been sorted and that everything just works! Or if you consider yourself to be a complete technophobe, you can opt to get a local computer repair company to do the installation for you. But enough of the negatives, there are lots of reasons why you would want to upgrade Familiar Interface: For those of you who found Windows 8 a step too far in terms of a new user interface, Windows 10 is more like trusty 7 and it feels like it was designed for a desktop experience unlike the metro style of 8. It also marks the return of the Start Menu, including a list of installed programs and power options to shut down or restart. Browsing: Internet Explorer is being phased out and being replaced with a sleeker and faster browser. Microsoft Edge will import your favourites from other browsers and wait for it ….. co ordinate your Web activities with Cortana — the new personal assistant included in

Windows 10 ( More about her in a minute) Edge also allows saving of web articles to your tablet for reading later, or make dinner reservations that save to your calendar and sync to your mobile device and tablet with directions to the restaurant. If your preference is still Chrome or Firefox, fret not. You can still use these browsers, they just don’t offer the same benefits you’ll see using Edge to sync your Web content. Now, introducing your own Personal Assistant. Cortana is Microsoft’s version of Siri and Google Now, and it’ll be available across all your devices that run Windows 10. Microsoft is even releasing a version for Android and iPhone, which will allow you to sync all your data no matter what mobile device you run with. It allows you to control elements of your PC with voice activation: make Web queries, schedule appointments on your calendar, dictate notes and reminders, listen to your favorite tunes, all without touching your keyboard. Still not convinced? Microsoft have put together a handy Windows 10 features page that you can peruse at leisure to help you decide whether to make the leap. h t t p s : / / w w w. m i c r o s o f t . c o m / e n - u s / windows/features.

review books Eating for England – Nigel Slater Subtitled ‘The Delights and Eccentricities of the British at Table’, this is an extended love letter to British food over the last forty years. If you have fond memories of sharing a box of Black Magic at Christmas or spooning jam over school rice pudding, then this is for you. Anyone who owns one of Nigel Slater’s cookbooks will know that there is as much pleasure to be had from reading the recipes as there is from following them. He writes about food with passion, knowledge and honesty, admitting his fondness for Heinz Tomato Ketchup , Smarties and other non-gastronomic treats. Here, he devotes short chapters (often no more than a paragraph or two) to a whole range of peculiarly British delights. Some are drawn from childhood memories, such as his father’s unsuccessful experiment with a coffee percolator (it ends up packed away next to the Christmas tree lights) or his mother’s blancmanges. Others are more contemporary and tells of the delight to be had from a visit to the fishmonger or the ritual of a Saturday farmers’ market. All are well written, funny and evocative. Whether you read this from cover to cover, or simply scan the chapter headings for whatever takes your fancy, this is a perfect book for thinking about food – and despite Slater’s reservations the last chapter will probably send you out to the shops for a packet of Pink Wafers!

screen

Why is Snot Green? – Glenn Murphy Want to see a nine year old boy (or indeed, a thirty-nine year old boy) reading? Well, buy a copy of this book and that’s what you’ll get. In fact, you’ll get more than that. Written by a member of staff from the Science Museum, this book answers those questions you’ve always wanted to ask – ‘Could you dig your way to Australia?’ (Come on, admit it – you tried to on the beach when you were seven), ‘Are people with bigger heads cleverer?’ and’ Why do we walk on two legs?’ for example – as well as some – ‘Do spiders have ears?’– that might never have occurred to you. Each question is answered in conversational style, anticipating the reader’s responses and taking the explanation further. Whilst there is a fairly heavy concentration on the grosser side of science – poo, snot and gas feature heavily – there’s also plenty of technical terminology and you really do learn something new on every page. Even how to stop an ice-cream headache – so well worth a read for that alone!
