he Dept of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Utah engages in excellent theoretical & experimental research that spans the broad spectrum of modern Physics & Astronomy. Our commitment to excellence & success in research is reflected in the strong international reputation of our faculty & programs.

A student undertakes graduate study in physics to accomplish several goals: first, to develop a broad and sophisticated knowledge of the field as a whole; second, to acquire a deep and thorough understanding of some specialized field; to contribute to the body of knowledge of that field through his or her own research; and finally, to prepare the foundation for a rewarding career in Physics, Astronomy, or one of the many diverse fields of industry and finance to which physicists contribute.

With over 50 faculty and researchers there is a graduate program that is the right fit for you.

Research areas include: • Astronomy & Astrophysics • Biophysics • Cosmic Rays • Education • Experimental Condensed Matter Physics • Medical Physics • Particle Physics • Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics To support these research areas and operations, the department maintains a large number of excellent laboratories, shops, and facilities while bringing in an average $5 million in research dollars annually.

The University of Utah’s Physics & Astronomy programs include the standard Master’s Degree and Ph. D. Programs, as well as Master’s and Ph. D. Programs in Computational Physics, Instrumentation Physics, Chemical Physics, Medical Physics & Physics Education.

Students who graduate from the department have a wide array of employment choices available to them. Institutions that have recently hired our graduate students include: Alliant Techsystems Inc (ATK), Brookhaven National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Legacy Technical Group, Happer Research, Veecco Instruments, Max Plank Institute, US Dept of Energy, US Dept of Defense, Sandia National Lab, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center & NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The Department of Physics & Astronomy offers teaching assistantships & fellowships, research assistantships, & postdoctoral fellowships.

Admitted students can receive: • Tuition Benefit: covers tuition for fall & spring semesters (approx. $16,000).

• Research Assistantship Stipends* (12 months) between $21,600- $23,750.

• Teaching Assistantship Stipends* (9 months) range between $15,000 - $17,000. *Additional summer stipends are awarded each year.

The Graduate School also offers subsidized graduate student insurance that students have the option of purchasing (the Graduate School pays 80%). These benefits and more support the cost of living in Salt Lake City.
