Thinking About A Career in The Medical Field? We invite you to check out the exciting Pre-Medical Physics program offered by the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Utah. This program integrates coursework in physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics, providing a very broad, but in-depth background in the sciences. The Pre-Medical Physics program meets all course requirements outlined in the University of Utah’s Pre-Medical program, as well as includes an MCAT/DAT preparation course. The curriculum can be customized to prepare students for medical school, dental school, or graduate study in medical physics.
Curriculum Our curriculum was developed in conjunction with faculty from the School of Medicine to provide students with more analytical thinking skills, and problem solving techniques, than found in more traditional pre-medical major programs. These skills are critical for the eventual practice of medicine or dentistry, and are advantageous for entrance into highly competitive post-graduate professional programs. Medical school admission committees are looking for well balanced and diversified students. Graduates from the Pre-Medical Physics program have the highest percentage acceptance rate to medical and dental school of any major on campus.
The curriculum includes all traditional pre-medical and pre-dental coursework, in addition to Physics of the Human Body 1 & 2 (an MCAT/DAT preparation course is included in Physics of the Human Body 2). The program also provides enough flexibility for additional coursework, such as: • Application of Statistics to Health Care • Biophysics • Principles in Biomedical Instrumentation • Medical Informatics • Immunology • Engineering Aspects of Clinical Medicine • Medical Writing • Integrated Approach to Human Physiology
After Graduation Recent graduates of the Pre-Medical Physics program have been accepted into medical and dental schools across the country, including: • Columbia University • George Washington University • Mayo Clinic • Rochester School of Medicine • Saint Louis University • Stanford University • UCLA • Uniformed School of Health Sciences • University of Utah School of Medicine • Wake Forest
Program Advisors The Pre-Medical Physics program is co-directed by Richard Ingebretsen, M.D., Ph.D. and Lynn Higgs. Dr. Ingebretsen is a faculty member in the Department of Physics & Astronomy, as well as in the School of Medicine. He is an emergency room physician and has been a member of the admissions committee at the School of Medicine for nearly a decade. Lynn Higgs is one of the undergraduate advisors for the Department of Physics & Astronomy and admissions coordinator for the Pre-Medical Physics program.
Research Opportunities It is highly beneficial for Pre-Medical students to participate in volunteer work and laboratory research activities whenever possible. With state of the art medical facilities on campus, students have access to the research and volunteer opportunities that medical schools are looking for in applicants. The department has many research assistantship positions available at various times, and there are many summer research programs available.
