EDITOR’S LETTER ELCOME

By J E RE M Y PI T TA R I

After an unusually warm winter, we still look forward to spring here in south Mississippi. Now that it has arrived, plans will abound that include a variety of outdoor activities. For those of us who have an affinity for looking at the stars, in this edition of Picayune Living, local astronomy enthusiast Dr. John Grant shares some simple tips for stargazers. As with most new hobbies, starting small and simple is the way to go in what can potentially be an expensive endeavor. Pearl River County has many types of homes. Some are built with design plans used by builders that lead to a subdivision filled with similar looking structures, while others are rarely, if ever, duplicated. One family chose to go the route of designing, and building, their home from the ground up. Look inside to get a view of the custom home built by the Walters family.

4 SPRING 2019

Students who attend Pearl River Community College receive a quality education that can prepare them for a rewarding career, or help them get a jumpstart on their first two years of a four-year degree. The local college also offers opportunities for those with talent to participate in a number of extra activities. PRCC’s The Voices is just one of those activities. There, students learn to be a part of a vocal group that tours the area to share the joys of music while promoting the college. In the not so distant past, most every home had a number of handmade quilts lovingly created by a loved one. Today, the craft of creating decorative quilts, while not as prevalent, perseveres. Look inside for the story of one quilter who has a passion for creating quilts that not only keep her friends and family warm, but are works of art.

DISCOVERY By J E RE M Y PI T TA R I

S

ome of the most influential discoveries occurred when people studied the sky. Arguably, according to Dr. John Grant, a retired instructor of the Poplarville School District, one of those was when Galileo discovered the moons of Jupiter. “That is one of the most significant discoveries of mankind,” Grant said. He feels that way because it was one of the first times humans came to the realization that everything did not revolve around the Earth, he said. “Next to the wheel, the telescope is the most significant development in technology,” Grant said. Today, with so many advancements in technology and the fact that humans have launched telescopes into orbit that can see millions of light years into space, there may not be a need for the layman to make groundbreaking discoveries. But astronomy still captures the hearts and minds of many. It can be a hobby that can be as expensive or inexpensive as a person’s interest and finances allow. Grant has taught astronomy at Pearl River Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi. His love of the sky began when his father was working on a master’s at a university. There, Grant was given access to an observatory at the age of 13, and was able to see planets through a refracting telescope. “That made an impact on me,” Grant said. Grant’s educational background is in physics, which he says is the basis for teaching astronomy, among other things, since it is the study of everything in nature. In

his years of looking up at the night sky, he’s tried several tools to bring the heavenly bodies closer to view. But the one he suggests a budding astronomer try first is readily available, their eyes. Even though Grant had access to a telescope as a child, Grant suggests astronomy newcomers start with their eyes, if their interest continues move on to a modest set of binoculars. That’s because telescopes can be frustratingly difficult to use for people unaccustomed to them. That fact can be compounded when people who know little about the location of planets attempt to find a particular one. But there are several planets that can be viewed with the naked eye if a person knows where to look. Grant suggests starting with the moon, but said that Jupiter and Venus can be located easily with a bit of research. Once those planets are located, then pointing a set of binoculars, or a telescope, can provide a better view. To better find those planets, there are magazines that provide star charts based on the specific time of year. Those maps can also be found online. In this day and age of ever-present streetlights and many other forms of light pollution in the night sky, heavenly bodies may not be as visible, but can still be seen. But if a clear view of the sky can be found with minimal or no light pollution, then Grant said those are the best places to see the heavens. If interest in seeing the planets, moon and stars continues to build after using binoculars, some people may consider buying a telescope. There are several options, some more expensive than others.

The most bang for the buck can be found by purchasing a reflector telescope. While they provide the most powerful magnification for the least amount of money, they have limitations. Because they use a large mirror on the bottom of the device and a smaller mirror at the top of the device to reflect light back to the eyepiece, the resolution is not the best. Refractor telescopes can provide better resolution, but are very expensive, and usually don’t provide the same level of magnification because they don’t use mirrors, but rather a series of lenses. However, refractor telescopes are also less likely to lose their alignment. Grant said there are also telescopes that use a combination of the two technologies. So, no matter the budget, looking at the night sky can be an enjoyable activity for those who are interested.

Vocal Point T

he dictionary defines “harmony” as the combination of musical notes simultaneously sounded to produce chords and chord progressions that having a pleasing effect. Anyone who has heard a performance by “The Voices” from Pearl River Community College can leave nothing but pleased. The 12 members of the a cappella vocal ensemble are selected by what the singers call a “nervous and intimidating” process, judged and directed by LaDona Tyson, PRCC’s instructor of music and director of choral groups. Auditioning is a process where Tyson listens to the individuals then, like perfecting the combination of spices in a casserole, sees what combination of tonal qualities fit best together. Out of the dozen performers who make up the group, only three have not been regular participants in outside musical activities and only a few have plans to continue to pursue a musical career. Their life goals are as diverse as their musical tastes – entails paths that lead to computer technician to dental hygienist and genres that range from rap to gospel. 12 SPRING 2019 12 SPRING 2019

Calee Emmett said she wanted to be part of The Voices in order to make friends as she began her days at PRCC. “I was looking for family and friends,” Emmett said. Emmett has succeeded in establishing those friendships as they all have – bonding through rigorous auditions, hours of rehearsal and dozens of live performances. Sara Ogdon noted the school’s motto is “Pride. Respect. Character.” And with that in mind, the group does many oncampus events and, in essence, serves as the face of PRCC on many occasions. Lonnie Burrell says the group practices for one hour three times a week. “We don’t do many outside rehearsals unless we have some major concert coming up,” Burrell said. The Voices usually do around 10 performances a year, many of those at local high schools. “We act as recruiters for the school,” said Hayley Lee, “We will take a day and go to two or three high schools and sing for them.” And, it is the performing which gives the ensemble the most thrills.

“Of course, rehearsing isn’t that much fun,” says Anna Grace Sable. “But the first time we performed at the Brownstone with the lights and stage, it was like we all glued together and now we’re a group.” Brandon Helton says there are those times when the group comes off a “really bad rehearsal.” “Then when concert time comes around, the switch turns on and we do as well as we possibly can,” Helton said. “We know we are representing the school and we want to do that the best we can.” A performance by The Voices may include most any genre of music – from the serious classics, to jazz and the hard rock sounds of Guns and Roses. However, the only instruments used are the vocal chords with one member serving as a human beat box and rhythm section. “This group has a lot of talent,” Emmett said. “I don’t say that to sound stuck up.

With what we have, we can do those choir pieces and we can do jazz pieces.” Helton adds that the members see it as “fun to find out what we can do with our voices.” Tyson sends the singers what are called “click tracks” electronically, to which each singer can rehearse their parts individually. When they enter the chorus room on campus, they have already been singing the song for several days on their own. Members of the group describe Tyson as a tough, demanding director, but she is someone for whom they have the utmost respect. “She is a very talented director,” says Hunter Key, “and she knows her stuff. She challenges us. She expects us to be great and makes us work hard and we appreciate that.” Tyson said more than 50 people audition for the group annually, but described this year’s edition as “very special.” “They are incredibly dedicated and hard-working and you couldn’t ask for a better bunch of students,” Tyson said. “I have been directing this group for 11 years and this is certainly a special group that will always stand out. arge Sandy says the downstairs space in her home was once an exercise room. These days, Marge exercises one of the most beloved crafts of the South — quilting. “My husband has the garage. I have down here. The marriage is good,” she says flashing a quick grin. The walls of her space are filled with color and imagination, bordered by sewing machines – new and antique – and bolts of fabric with all the colors of the rainbow at her disposal. “What we have here is called a design wall,” Marge says as she leads a guided tour of the tools of her hobby. “Most quilters have something like this because when you are putting a quilt together, you need somewhere to pin the blocks up to see what they look like. It’s like a planning board.” She acknowledges that these days there are those who use computers for design assistance. “There are a lot of quilt programs for computers,” Marge said. “But, I know how to do the daily jigsaw puzzle, solitaire and – when I am reminded – look at email.” To Sandy, computers take some of the craft away from quilting so

she sticks to the tools by which the hands play a more important part than gigabytes. Marge points to how it all started: with a hoop on a stand. She said it would be tied up to ceilings and six to 10 ladies would sit around it, hand-stitching, and rolling it as they got towards the center of their quilt. Stands were later developed for individual work. After stands, there were the sewing machines. Marge still has her old Singer featherweight sewing machine, which she has kept in near-mint condition. She says it was made in the year of her own birth. “I still use this,” Marge said. “It only weighs a few pounds and it sews beautifully. I use it a lot.” Marge added the craftsmanship that went into making the machine “is just gorgeous.” “And, it’s portable,” she adds. She adds there are a lot of local quilting guilds and they all belong to a larger guild called the Gulf States Quilting Association. “There are about 900 to 1,000 members,” Marge said. “Every other year we do a quilt show at the Harper Center at Slidell. On the other years, we do a seminar which is all classes.”

Marge also utilizes a more modern machine that is mostly plastic, but is larger giving her more area with which to work. She says a handmade quilt should, at a minimum, sell for $600. “I tell people that and they look at me with the reaction that they can go to JCPenney and buy one for $29.95,” Marge said. What those people fail to realize is the time and materials that go into a handmade quilt. Marge is often working on more than one at a time, and says quilting can become addictive. “It definitely can be,” she said and the labor can run from using ten large blocks to 1,000 small ones.

The local guild, to which she belongs, the Picayune Piecemakers Quilt Guild, makes them for Brenda’s House in Bay St. Louis, the pregnancy health center, and even for the SPCA’s animals at the local animal shelter. Marge jokes about the quilters being older in age, but knows there are younger people getting involved. “Last year at the Bay Oaks guild, we had three junior members,” she said. Two were girls and one was a boy,” she said adding the young man made the most beautiful quilt she had ever seen.” “Quilting is not just an old woman’s sport,” Marge said.

Building the Dream

20 SPRING 2019 20 SPRING 2019

HOME SWEET HOME By J EREM Y PI T TA RI

A

custom-built home in the south end of Pearl River County was designed by the family and primarily constructed by the family’s patriarch, providing them a lovely home at minimal expense. The home of Lacie and “Bubba” Walters features 4,000-square feet of living space but the home has 6,200-square-feet under beam. This one of a kind structure sits on 10 acres of land. Propane lanterns illuminate the front and rear porches, which provide ample space for lounging in the fresh air. Roger “Bubba” Walters Jr., said he and his wife drew the plans up themselves, and he put in about 90 percent of the work with some help from his father and contractors. It took less than two years to finish and was built in two separate sections. The first section was built at grade, and included what is now the children’s bedrooms, and the game room on the second floor. That game room was the master bedroom and dining room while the second phase of the home was under construction. The second phase, which is built above grade, houses the master bedroom, kitchen, living room, dining room and a guest bathroom. A number of the materials for the home came from mills in Hattiesburg. Inside, cypress timber makes up the flooring, and poplar lines the walls. Pine support beams were purchased from a mill in Alabama along with the beaded board. Lacie Walters, said her husband framed the home himself and put up the drywall, but enlisted help to put up the roof, finish the drywall and install the electrical and plumbing.

In the large kitchen, marble provides a surface for preparing meals on counter-tops that house a large sink with industrial style faucet. Memorabilia from Bubba’s service to this country also adorns the kitchen. Lacie said the copper decorations on the wall in the kitchen came from Iraq. The kitchen is also where she displays family heirloom kitchenware. Where the family could, materials were re-purposed to create outside lights and other aspects of the home. The most expensive item in the house is the front door. “People think to have a pretty home you have to spend a lot of money, but you really don’t,” Lacie said.

The three bedroom home features two and a half bathrooms, two laundry rooms and a swimming pool out back. Lacie said they left the initial laundry room intact from the first phase of the construction so their teenage children could do their own laundry. In the master bedroom is a bed frame also constructed by Bubba’s own hands. The master bath features a claw foot tub and separate custom shower. Lacie said the tub was a gift from her husband. This one of a kind residential property can’t be found in a subdivision. And that is just one reason why it makes an inviting place for the Walters family to call home.

WHY I LOVE PEARL RIVER COUNTY BY S TE VE REID love Pearl River County for many reasons. Perhaps the main reason is because my roots run deep here. Growing up in Poplarville, I have memories of many hardworking and kindSteve & Kelly Reid hearted people that called this area home. My father, Burlon Reid, grew up in Poplarville. I couldn’t have asked for better dad to raise my two brothers and I. Dad had a love for not just his family, but all children. He taught at an elementary school in Bogalusa, La. for 30 years before retiring and serving another 18 years in the Pearl River County School District. In addition to teaching, he also coached and umpired youth sports for many years, often providing transportation to and from games for kids without a ride. I meet people all the time who have a fond memory or story about my father. My mother, Chris Reid, also grew up in Pearl River County in the Ozona community. She, too, was a kind and a very loving parent. Mom worked hard when I was a kid, but she always had a hug and a hot meal on the table for supper each night. After graduating from Poplarville High School, I attended Pearl River Community College before finishing up my education at the University of Southern Mississippi. I graduated from USM in 1998

after completing an internship in Recreational Therapy at the Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mt. Vernon, Mo. Pearl River County is a great place to raise a family. I always knew that I wanted to return home when it came time to settle down. After working several years as a recreational therapist at South Mississippi State Hospital in Purvis, I had the opportunity to return to Poplarville and join the team at Pearl River County Hospital & Nursing Home as the Clinical Outreach Director. Shortly after moving back to Poplarville, I met my wife Kelly, a native of Wiggins, Miss. Becoming a husband and a father is one of the best things that ever happened to me. Kelly and I are blessed to be the parents of two wonderful kids, Olivia and Coleman. The kids attend the Poplarville School District and Kelly works at PRCC as the Human Resources Director. Being involved in the local community is both important and enjoyable to me. My job as Admissions Development Coordinator at Pearl River County Hospital & Nursing Home allows me the opportunity to be involved and serve the people of our county. I represent our hospital and nursing home in the Chamber of Commerce in both Poplarville and Picayune. I’ve had the opportunity to be a member of the Rotary Club of Poplarville for the last several years and serve as club president twice. My family and I worship at First Baptist Church of Poplarville where I serve on the Welcome Committee and as the Chairman of Deacons. Like my father, I have always enjoyed being involved in coaching youth sports. There is no place that I would rather raise my family and serve the community. There is no place like Pearl River County.
