JEREMY BIBAUD COORDINATOR, COMMUNICATIONS UNITED WAY OF THE ALBERTA CAPITAL REGION
July 25 marked the day of the United in the Park event. Held in Butler Park in the midst of 30+ degree weather, the scorching heat wasn’t enough to keep musicians and fans alike from making the trees shake with a few choice beats. Oh, Snap! DJ’s, a jazz quintet, Magic the Gathering, Krystle Dos Santos, and The Consonance were all on hand to welcome United Way to the neighbourhood with a bit of dance, jazz and R&B. Aside from welcoming United Way to its new home in the Stony Plain Road area and

party featured 2009 JUNO nominee Souljah Fyah, who also received the 2009 Best Reggae Band in Canada award at the Canadian Reggae Music Awards. All were amazing performances.
The Stony Plain Road BRZ organized and manned serving food during the event, cooking in front of those hot grills through the scorching heat to ensure everyone was well fed. On top of that, they raised around $500 for United Way! Huge thanks to them for all their hard work.
Music was made possible by a Jasper Place Neighbourhood Revitalization grant from the city.
Also deserving of thanks is The Haven Social Club for not only lining up FIVE musical acts in the park, but for hosting the after party at their building which is just two doors down from United Way on Stony Plain Road. The after

When it was all over, the United in the Park event had accomplished its goal – to unite people. They came from many areas and were united by music, food, and good conversation. It was more than just people having a good time though. It was a community proving that Jasper Place is ready for change and that when the time comes there are people willing to lead it.

Back to School September and the act of going back to school go hand in hand. This month, students of all ages and grade levels return to the classroom for another season of life and learning. Certainly, lots of children in our communities are heading to one of the numerous primary and secondary schools in our area. Others are leaving the boundaries of Stony Plain Road and Jasper Place for university or college.

You be the Judge…Restaurant Review The Cheesecake Café 17011 – 100 Avenue NW (780) 486-0440 By Budd Erickson The Cheesecake Café has a welcoming and calm atmosphere. The interior is darkly coloured and dimly lit, which promotes the overall cool and comfortable mood. The soothing ambiance also diminishes the hurried sitdown-eat-and-leave feeling that is often subtly pushed by the typical restaurant. For starters, we had to try the spinach dip (we try it everywhere) and it was no disappointment. A mound of warm, multicoloured corn chips beg you to scoop up their rich and creamy counterpart. The dip was not watery or runny (which we have seen) or coagulated by long strands of half-melted cheese and uncut spinach (which we have also seen). Rather, it was very user-friendly and flavourful. As much as my lovely associate

and I like to eat out, we don’t like to gorge and make ourselves sick. So, we shared a main dish: The Hippie Sandwich. It doesn’t sound like much, and yes, it is vegetarian, but it packs a punch of juicy veggie flavour that made me forget all about its lack of meat. It is by no stretch of the imagination a wimpy sandwich; it’s crammed with various pickled vegetables and sun-dried tomatoes, splashed with a tangy sauce and slapped with a slice of rich cheese. It comes with fries, but we ordered the sweet potato fries as a substitute (for a nominal fee). They come in an unconquerable heap with a chipotle-mayo sauce that is just awesome.

Best Ever Chocolate Zucchini Cake MICHELE HEBERT
I decided to combine my columns this month, as I am up to my armpits in gravel, sand, and mulch. I am renovating my front yard this Summer/Fall – putting a deck on the front of the house with new stairs, new front sidewalk, and a stream running through the yard. I had my sad lawn scraped away and am recreating my yard with mulch and rock. No more mowing, at least in my front yard Hopefully I can add some pictures of it all to next month’s article. At this point, I have mounds of clay in my yard that will shortly make its way to the landfill. Not a Kodak moment. It’s September, and what is there to do with all that zucchini growing in the garden? Make Chocolate Zucchini Cake, of course.
3 oz. good quality dark chocolate, coarsely chopped 1/4 cup canola oil 1 1/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1 tsp. Baking powder 1 tsp. Baking soda 1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup softened butter (gotta use real butter) 3/4 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 1/4 cup buttermilk 1 1/2 cups grated zucchini or summer squash
Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease 9” cake pan, dust with cocoa powder. Melt chocolate along with oil in a double boiler or saucepan over low heat, careful not to scorch. Sift together flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt into medium mixing bowl. In large mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then beat in vanilla. Add flour mixture and buttermilk, beating until combined, then fold in chocolate and oil mixture, and zucchini. Scrape batter into prepared pan. Bake 35-40 minutes, or until a tester inserted in middle comes out clean. Cool cake in pan for 10 minutes on a wire rack, then invert the cake onto the rack or a plate, and let cool completely.
Serve plain, with your favourite icing, dusted with icing sugar, or with fresh raspberries nested around it.

GHOST BIKE MEMORIAL Ghost Bikes are bicycles that have been painted white and then placed at a site where a cyclist has died. One of these memorials appeared at the intersection of 156 Street and Stony Plain Road this past summer, where cyclist Ronnie Smith, aged 60, died. Ghost Bikes are secured to a street sign near the
place of death and are not intended to impart blame on any of vehicles involved, but to serve as a reminder that everyone – motorist and cyclist alike – needs to share the road and be on the lookout for each other. For more information about Ghost Bikes, visit www.ghostbikes.org.

IT MAKES CENTS $12, and in some instances your fee is waived. You can search the Edmonton Public Library database (www.epl.ca) for titles, put them on hold and have them sent to your branch for pick-up as well. SHERI FULLER
Last year when I went on maternity leave, my husband and I made some adjustments to our spending and saving habits so that we could still enjoy our way of life and afford our new addition, all on one less income. We changed our former way of spending with some newer, more innovative options. We were able to pay down an outstanding debt, save money for both our daughter's education fund and an emergency fund, and not feel like we gave up everything to do so. Here are some of the things we did ‚ and you can easily do to save money. 1) Get a library card. Did you know that in addition to books, you can check out magazines, CDs, DVDs, and games for Wii, XBox, PS2/3, and more? All for the low yearly fee of
2) Say no to brand names. When grocery shopping, everyone has a favourite brand of food they don't compromise on. That's OK. But there are also other foods you may be buying where the brand name doesn't matter. Choosing the store brand on those items can save you on average about 10 percent depending on what you are buying. If you spend $400/month on food items, you are saving about $40/month by checking prices and buying the store brand when you can. Make sure to double check prices though because sometimes the brand name is on sale for lower than the store brand. 3) Use Coupons. There are a number of online sites where you can have coupons printed and mailed to you. Coupons can also be found on store shelves. Even if you are not buying that item right then, but you will be buying it sometime before the
coupon expires, pick it up. Chances are good that when you go back to the same store needing that coupon, it will no longer be there. A buck here and two bucks there really adds up. I should know. Over a five-month period, our family has saved over $600 by being diligent and using coupons. Store your coupons in an envelope and make sure you always have them with you when you go out. 4) Skip the extras when dining out. You don't need to do this every time you dine out, but once in a while choose to skip the appetizers, dessert, and drinks (order water instead). This will save a lot of extra money. Even better, choose a restaurant that includes a soup or salad with dinner meals. 5) Have a “Stay-Date. These have become more popular in our household since our daughter was born. Instead of heading out for every date, take the time to get to know each other again on your own turf. Make a nice dinner together (I suggest homemade

pizza; it's fun and cheap if you make it from scratch). I'll bet you have a bunch of movies or music somewhere in your home just collecting dust. Pick out a movie each and watch it. You can also refer to tip Number One and get a favourite movie or one that you haven't seen yet from the library. You can have themed movie nights where you can pick out your favorite comedy, horror, or musical of all time. You may learn something about your loved one you didn't know before. Make popcorn, don't answer the phone, and have fun. Either start or end off the evening with a nice walk and talk. By doing this for every third or fourth date together you are saving extra money. Always remember that it is your money and you work hard for it. Paying attention to how you spend it will leave extra cash in your pocket at the end of the day. THE KLONDIKE CONNECTION: A History of the Jasper Place Railway CHRISTOPHER SPENCER
The first residents of Jasper Place expected that the tracks north of Stony Plain Road would someday extend all the way to Vancouver. The name was certainly ambitious enough: the Edmonton, Yukon and Pacific Railway, chartered to snake through the Yellowhead Pass into B.C. Perhaps, in the event of another outbreak of gold fever, it would head north to the Klondike as well. In 1907, as settlers started building houses along the MacKinnon Ravine, the first 30 kilometres or so of the EY&P were already operating: Strathcona to Edmonton to Stony Plains (the extra “s” eventually disappeared). When the EY&P first train had crossed the Low Level Bridge on Oct. 20, 1902, it was an event of such magnitude that Mayor William Short declared a civic holiday. Finally Edmonton was connected to the rest of the world by a more reliable form of transportation than steamships and stage-coaches. More importantly, it had secured a place on 20th century maps. In 1891, when the Calgary and Edmonton Railway deadended in Strathcona, it seemed like a matter of time before the new settlement swallowed up the town that had grown up on the north side of the river, around the old Hudson’s Bay Company Fort. Instead, 10 years after the first EY&P train, Edmonton annexed (or “amalgamated with,” to use the politically-correct term) Strathcona.
The route that first train took now makes for a lovely walk, especially on a fall afternoon. Start at the east side of the CPR rail yard. Between 68th and 69th Avenues, there’s a long grassy knoll that stretches all the way to the Mill Creek Ravine. (It’s an off-leash area for dogs now, so tread carefully.) The alignment through the ravine is preserved as a paved trail, and walking toward the river valley a hiker crosses four trestle bridges, reminders of the EY&P. The longest and most impressive is parallel to 76th Avenue. Initially, the rails did not reach as far as Jasper Place. Just getting across the river was good enough to start, so the EY&P put up a temporary station in Rossdale, northwest of the Low Level Bridge, and declared itself open for business. It was a frugal operation. When there was no money to buy coal, the engineer and fireman dug into a seam near the station hoping to find fuel for the tender. Construction standards had been exceedingly poor, which caused frequent derailments. For safety’s sake, trains crawled along at a maximum speed of 16 km/h. At the end of November 1905, a second line reached Edmonton:
the Canadian Northern Railway, from Winnipeg through Saskatoon, North Battleford and Fort Saskatchewan. As the CNoR and the EY&P shared the same ownership, under the direction of William Mackenzie and Donald Mann, linking the railways made sense. Malcolm MacCrimmon was given a contract to extend the EY&P up the north bank on the North Saskatchewan River. The line climbed over Victoria Park, wrapped along the east fork of the Groat Ravine and continued diagonally toward the CNoR yards, connecting near the Molson brewery. In 1906, MacCrimmon started building westward, extending the EY&P on an alignment just a little bit north of today’s 106th Avenue, through areas now called Glenora, Grovenor, Canora, Britannia, Youngstown, Mayfield – and on to Stony Plains. Alas, Stony Plains would turn out to be the end of the line for the EY&P. Out of money, Mackenzie and Mann lost the initiative to the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, which reached Edmonton from Wainwright in 1909 and kept building west to Jasper and eventually Prince Rupert. That year, on Apr. 23, the EY&P lost its independent corporate existence, becoming part of the CNoR. When their finances improved, Mackenzie and Mann faced a choice: build from Stony Plains alongside the GTP line or take a more northerly route, through St. Albert, Onoway and Alberta Beach. This decision to explore virgin territory relegated the former EY&P to a spur, with three trains per week picking up grain from the Stony Plains elevator. By 1923, both the CNoR and GTP were bankrupt and under direct federal government control. A
14
new crown corporation, Canadian National Railways, consolidated duplicate lines: between Glenora and (now called) Stony Plain, the old EY&P right of way was abandoned, the rails removed. During the Second World War, the line would be rebuilt as far as Grovenor, where it served warehouses north of 106th Avenue that were being used by the U.S. Army’s Quartermaster Corps. This small industrial area became a staging point for the construction of the Alaska Highway. If you live in a 1940s house in Grovenor or Jasper Place, there are very good odds that the original residents were an American family that had temporarily resettled in Edmonton while Daddy worked on the Alaska Highway project. Perhaps, in a fanciful sense, the EY&P fulfilled its destiny by serving the builders of the Alaska Highway. The little railway with big ambitions eventually found a way to help people get to the Klondike – and beyond. After the war, the railhead became, for a short time, a commercial zone. However, because of the baby boom and migration fuelled by the oil discovery at Leduc, Edmonton needed people houses more than warehouses. The shops were recycled and so were the rails. Once and for all, trains disappeared from the west end. But they’ve left a legacy. Remember – the parent company of the Edmonton, Yukon and Pacific Railway was the Canadian Northern Railway. The CAnadian NOrthern RAilway. CA-NO-RA. Canora. Neat, huh?
