First of all, before I write a column about the holidays I have to make an admission: I don’t celebrate Christmas. Never have. Not because of any aversion to the commercialization of the season or the rampant materialism it promotes. My reasons are far less exciting and more personal: I’m Jewish. I celebrate Chanukah instead.

In recent years I have come to appreciate the display of crèches at the West End Christian Reformed Church. Seeing the hundreds of Nativity scenes from around the world, created in different styles with different

materials, is absolutely fascinating. I can certainly live without the retail pressure to buy things or the blaring aural assault of Christmas music every time I enter a store. I’m no Grinch – I like some Christmas songs, but after the first dozen or so times I start to grow tired even of my favourites. Instead, I commiserate with likeminded folks – and there are many. The holidays aren’t about spending too much, overeating, and various other indulgences. It is about family, fun, and contemplating the spiritual side of life. Regardless of what holiday you celebrate, we here at The SPURR wish you and yours the very best!

However, I do have an appreciation for the way others celebrate. Enjoying and sharing in the celebrations of others do not take away one bit from my own. I always look forward to seeing the houses lit up along Candy Cane Lane and seeing the bright lights glow in the darkness. From a purely aesthetic viewpoint, Christmas decorations are beautiful and can sometimes be artistic.

We hope to see everyone again in 2010. Mark your calendars for Friday, October 15 and Saturday, October 16, 2010. LRT West Route Decision Postponed After much debate, there was no clear consensus on the best route for the West LRT Route. The Councillors felt strongly that there was not enough information to make this important critical decision. Many thanks to all who sent in e-mails, registered to speak, and met with their Councillors. The voices of the community and businesses opposing the West LRT were heard. The next date set for Council discussion is December 15, 2009.

2009 was another very productive year for the Board of Directors. Some of the major activities included:

Graffiti Removal Program: This program has been successful in helping the businesses and communities’ combat graffiti. This was the second year of the program and will continue to improve with each consecutive year.

extremely talented bands played and sales from the BBQ raised $500 for United Way. The bands were sponsored by the JP Neighbourhood Revitalization Fund. We hope to turn this into an annual event.

Grant funding: We received matching funding from JP Neighbourhood Revitalization to help with the flower planters and Storefront Cinema Nights and Bylaw Community Standards for the big item pick in the surrounding neighbours and business back alleys and litter pick along the business strip.

Walkable Edmonton: A walking schedule that connects the Stony Plain Road and Area Businesses Area with the surrounding communities is now available.

Storefront Cinemas Nights: The second year and a major event for this area. We hope to keep this a growing annual event with increased funding from the Canadian Heritage Program and further participation from the arts community. Street Cleaning: We had major support this year from various services to help keep our area clean.

Participation with the JP Neighbourhood Revitalization and the City of Edmonton Planning Department with the Strategic Plan to redesign Stony Plain Road to revitalize and develop a new zoning plan for the business and surrounding area and the transit terminal.

Edmonton in Bloom: We continued to work on beautification to the area. This year we piloted new recyclable flower barrels. There was some challenges with the types of flowers uses and the watering however next year we hope to improve the selection and location of the planters for easier watering access.

Façade Program: We worked with City Administration and City Council to approve new funding and to allow set back properties to qualify for funding.

Park Watch: Together with The Haven Social Club a new event was held at Butler Memorial Park which was called “United in the Park. Free to the public, five

So how will the City use these gifts? We often hear that City residents are indifferent to urban issues. This Revitalization area and its volunteers have proven otherwise. When the meetings began about three years ago, all City departments had not received permission to attend and work with the communities. Volunteers at that time decided to move forward and be pro-active. It is time for the City and its departments to “catch up” and work co-operatively in a co-ordinated way that will make the Jasper Place Revitalization area a leader of innovative urban planning in Edmonton and across Canada.

This issue has the possibility of being The Jasper Place Revitalization Strategy’s Pandora’s Box. City Councillors have already approved an Action Plan that community members have worked diligently on. This document did look not at the issue of including the LRT in redevelopment. Recently, I attended a volunteer supper where the speaker talked about the value of communities and the gifts within them. Gifts are about giving, and the volunteers of the Jasper Place Revitalization have given many. They have given their time, their commitment, and their diverse talents to creating a vision for better community life in the Jasper Place/Stony Plain Road and surrounding areas of Canora, Glenwood, Britannia Youngstown, and West Jasper Place. Ideas have flowed in the various committees, public meetings,

and workshops. People have shared their insights with regard to how they want to their neighbourhoods to change and grow. It is pro-active and positive for area residents and the City. Foresight and careful planning have provided a strategic plan that will serve this Revitalization area in

the immediate future as well as the future generations of our communities. Teamwork within committees has given us the knowledge of what living in this area was like in the past. It has shared with us the knowledge of the issues we face today. Important action plans for

Whether the LRT is a “gift” the communities want or not, it may be a reality. If you have any thoughts, concerns, or other comments about the LRT issue, contact the editor of The SPURR. The LRT would be a major change for the Revitalization area and your input is important.

In these times of eco-friendly everything, one way to help the earth just a little bit more at Christmas time is to make your door wreath from fresh boughs, rather than buying a plastic one that will take eons to decompose in a landfill. Most florist shops carry boughs and fresh holly sprigs to make your wreath with. A quick sprits with water every day or two will keep them fresh and green throughout the holiday season. Some natural elements that can be added to your wreath may be raffia ribbon, cinnamon sticks, real oranges (navel work best and last the longest), kumquats, pomegranates, nuts in the shell,

pinecones, and other such things. A natural wreath should last three to four weeks with a little TLC, and smells heavenly when entering your home. By the time the holidays are over, you can feel a little bit better about disposing of your wreath, and you won’t have to find a space to store it until next year.

fake. Just take care around candles. The new flameless candles that run on batteries would be a good choice in this instance. I use them in my bathroom when having a nice, relaxing bubble bath and they look great. They come in many sizes, and would work well with real greenery. They are pet and kid friendly, also. As a side note, I just received

my T&T Seeds catalogue this week. You can order online, or request a catalogue, at www.ttseeds.com or phone 1204-895-9964. Now that my catalogue is here, I know spring is on its way (albeit a few months yet). Gardeners are forever optimistic. Until next year, happy gardening.

The same idea can be used for garlands and table center pieces in your home. Buy fresh boughs and wire them together to make real garlands rather than buying

JPRS GOES ONLINE TIM OSBORNE United Way of the Alberta Capital Region

One of the main challenges of any community development project is effective communication. It is important that people know what is happening and have an opportunity to have their voices heard. To date, The SPURR has been the primary source of information regarding the Jasper Place Revitalization Strategy.

also follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/JPRSedmonton The Facebook Group will be a place to hear about upcoming events, interact with fellow community members, and learn about the progress of the initiative. It will also be a place for healthy discussion. Feel free to join the group and start a discussion on a topic that interests you.

The reality, of course, is that not all people access information in the same way. Facebook, Twitter, blogs and other sources of social media are becoming increasingly popular. In fact, there are currently more than 300 million active users on Facebook! And it’s not just young people using social media – the fastest growing demographic on Facebook is people over the age of 35.

If you prefer your information in 140-character pieces, check out our Twitter feed (@JPRSedmonton). There you will find links to interesting articles, information about upcoming community events, and the latest news on what is happening in the communities served by the Jasper Place Revitalization strategy.

With that in mind, there are now two more places that you can find information regarding the Jasper Place Revitalization Strategy – Facebook and Twitter. To find us on Facebook, just search for “Jasper Place Revitalization Strategy” and the group should be the first search result. You can

Getting Ready for Christmas -

then and now MAXINE HEBERT

After taking off a few months for a little repair to my heart, and to do some canning with all my tomatoes, I am back. I read in a magazine that if you put a Tums tablet in with each tomato plant that it is good for the plant. Well, I put two Tums in each hole as I planted them, and you should have seen what happened. My daughter, Michele, will remind you all about this in the spring in the gardening column. I ended up with over 40 quarts of salsa, 10 quarts of tomato onion relish, 7 quarts of tomato sauce, 12 small jars of pizza sauce, and 15 quarts of plain canned tomatoes. Plus, I gave away bushels and bushels. It sure works. I don’t know about you, but I am starting to get ready for Christmas. At least in this day and age we are lucky enough to have freezers to keep things in so we can start early and just pop it all into the freezer. My Mom didn’t have such a luxury, so she had to do most of the baking just the last few days before Christmas, and what a flurry that caused in our kitchen. Of course her Christmas cakes were made in early October, wrapped in cheesecloth and moistened regularly with brandy, sherry, or rum. Then she had to do the mince tarts, butter tarts, gingerbread, and shortbread just before Christmas. Our old coal and wood stove was just puffing away. We would be busy making our cranberry and popcorn tree garlands then too because we didn’t want the cranberries to dry up

too soon. They were always put out for the birds to gorge on after New Years. We also had the business of getting the tree and putting that up – a real tree, not an imitation one – and it sure did smell good. As soon as my dad would bring the tree in the house, you knew Christmas was coming. Now we can all start our baking early and have it ready, and just go down to the basement to get the imitation tree and the decorations from the years before. Kind of takes all the fun out of it, I think.

simple to make, but can be messy. I hope you all try these recipes, and enjoy them as much as our family does. Before I leave, I want to thank the wonderful lady named Sue who brought our little dog, Oliver, back home when he got out of the yard a couple of weeks ago. (Someone left the gate open – not me.) Oliver has an ID tag on his harness with our phone and address, and while we were out looking for him after leaving the house quickly and leaving the doors

unlocked, she put him in our kitchen. He was found over a mile away on Ravine Drive, that little stinker, which means he had to have crossed Stony Plain Road. These are the kind of people we have living in this area, and thank heavens for that. So, thank you very much, Sue, and my husband thanks you also because now he out of the doghouse. MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone, from the Heberts.

IT MAKES CENTS group of friends together and each pick one dessert recipe, either a cookie or squares. Then you make a dozen of your recipe for each person in the swap and make a dozen for you to keep. SHERI FULLER

The most expensive holiday of the year — Christmas — is quickly approaching. The food, gifts, decorations, cards and all of those extras that pop up can sure take a toll on your wallet. I have some tips to help you enjoy the season Santa-style on a Humbug budget. Host a cookie swap. Holiday baking can be time consuming and costly if you are making different desserts for the season. It calls for a lot of grocery shopping and you usually end up only using half or a quarter of what you had to purchase for your recipe. With a cookie swap, you get a

For example, say you get together with six friends and decide to make mint chocolate chip cookies. You would make sevendozen cookies. You then set a time to meet and drop off the six dozen and pick up six dozen other desserts that everyone else made. In the end, you are left with seven dozen different desserts. You end up saving money because you are not buying a lot of different ingredients and you can purchase what you need for your recipe in bulk. Recycle last year's cards. Keep your Christmas cards from the previous year and store them away with your holiday decorations. The next year, take them out and recycle them.

First, this will give you a list of who sent you cards the previous year to return the favour. Second, you can use the images on the front of previous years cards and make them into gift tags. This saves both the environment and your chequebook. Buy on sale. Keep an eye out during the year for possible Christmas gifts to go on sale. In order to save money while buying on sale you have to consider the item at full value. For example, if you have a limit of $50 to spend per person, and you find an item regularly priced at $50 on sale for $30, then consider yourself done for that person. Entertain on a budget. Spending time with family and friends over the holidays doesn't have to be costly either. Host a potluck party and ask each guest to bring a favorite appetizer. Find out ahead of time what they are bringing to avoid duplicates. This way, you make one appetizer

and your guests bring the rest. This is also a great icebreaker too if all of your guests don't know each other. Stock up after the holidays. Wait until after Christmas to buy your decorations. Your choices will be limited, but you will be able to find some great deals on what's left. You can also buy next year's cards and gift wrap at this time if you are running low at the end of the season. This way you will be all stocked up and ready to go next year at a fraction of the cost. I hope you have found some useful tips in here to help you save money during the holidays. Sheri Fuller is a Glenwood resident as well as owner/author of www.thisbirdsday.com.
