Community Walking Maps are here...
MARIAN BRUIN (780) 944-5417
Walking Maps are Here! The community walking maps are complete! They are walking guides created to promote walking in the area. You can choose a 1 km route, 2.5 km route, or go for broke and do a 6.9 km walk. The maps identify services in the area like coffee shops, late night stores, pharmacies, and grocery stores. They also identify crosswalks with signals, bus stops, local parks, schools, and community leagues. Walking is still the number one fitness activity. This map includes walking routes through all the communities as well as the business area on Stony Plain Road. The best way to improve community safety is by walking the area and getting to know your community and your neighbours. Special thanks to Sherry Fowler from Bent Arrow and Bernadette Thomas for walking out some of the routes! Look for a map at the Jasper Place Office (10030- 167 Street), United Way (15132 Stony Plain Road), Bent Arrow (10117- 150 Street), Stony Plain Road and Area Business Association 10043 151 Street or the Jasper Place Library (9010-156 Street). Dog Walking Group Are you interested in starting a dog walking group? You could meet your neighbours and have company during your evening walks. Call Marian at (780) 944-5417.

Making Memories Along the Road Memories attached to a place can be powerful. The Stony Plain Road and Jasper Place areas stand out in my mind for a variety of reasons. Some of my earliest memories include trips to London Drugs with my family. I still shop there on a regular basis. The Jasper Gates shopping area has changed a lot over the years, with different stores and restaurants coming and going. Royal Fork Buffet in particular used to be a weekly destination for myself and a group of my

Many a pair of cycling gloves have been purchased at Revolution Cycle, and hours spent browsing the shelves at Wee Book Inn. I still remember the day I almost jumped for joy in Just for Fun when I found a secondhand CD by a Francophone musician from Montreal, whose music is extremely hard to find (and expensive) this side of Quebec. When I explained to the owner how hard it had been for me to find his music - these were the days before downloading MP3s online – she said she was glad she had decided to take the CD even though she had never heard of him before (his name is Paul Piché in case anyone cares). I try to make at least one trip there a year to see if my taste in esoteric and
Over the years I have witnessed a balance of chain stores with mom and pop shops for both retail and restaurants. The chain stores are a reflection of our modern times while those family businesses demonstrate the work ethic that still exists amongst many people. I try to patronize independent stores whenever possible.

Finally, I am making new memories participating in all of the new and wonderful community events taking place in the area. IT MAKES CENTS maternity leave begins. If you are already used to living on one income, it won't be too much of an adjustment.
SHERI FULLER
This month I'm going to cover some things we started on early in our marriage that helped us bank away some money rather painlessly. These tips will save you a lot of money in the long run if started at the right point in time. 1. If you are newly married or soon to be married, consider living on one income. I don't mean quit your job. I mean live on the higher income, and put the other income into a savings account. If that is not feasible, consider adding your incomes together, and banking 25%. Put the 25% in a separate account from your pay account. Better yet, have the higher income deposited directly into your chequing account, and the other deposited directly into a savings account so you don't even have to see it. This practice will be very beneficial to you especially if you are planning on starting a family one day as you will be one income short when
By living on one income, or on less than what your full pay is, you will be better equipped to handle those financial bumps in the road such as maternity leave, job loss or major home repairs, and you will even get an emergency fund out of it. 2. If you are a new or expecting parent, when your child is born you can apply to the Canadian government for both the Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) and the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB). You may be approved for the Alberta Family Employment Tax Credit (AFETC) depending on your family income. If you are financially able, consider opening an RESP for your child as soon as he or she is born and make your monthly deposits at least equal to those that you get from all of the tax rebates you receive. For example, if you receive a combined total of $100 per month from the government(s), try to put that $100 per month into an RESP to save for your child's post-secondary education. In addition to saving for your child's future, you will also get additional money in grants from the government to further increase your sav-
ings because you opened the RESP. The UCCB and CCTB run until your child is six years old, so if you start an RESP at the beginning, you won't be putting any of your own money in for the first six years. You can discuss the benefits of an RESP and open one at your financial institution. 3. If you are a parent to young kids, start allowances early and talk about money with your kids. Consider starting a weekly allowance with your child as soon as they are old enough to help in some way around the house, and when they begin asking about money and/or material things. I recommend giving a weekly allowance of between 50 cents and $1 for each year of age. If your child is five, then you would start off between $2.50 - $5. Begin by having an age-appropriate discussion about what an allowance is, if your child would like to receive an allowance, and what must be done to earn it. To start, chores can be as simple as pulling their bed sheets up when they get out of bed in the morning and making sure Mr. Bear is lying on the pillow.
any questions about money as best as you can. You can also teach the importance of saving by asking your child to keep some money back from each allowance and saving it for later. And make sure when it's time for a raise in allowance (birthday) that you sit down with your child and praise them for the work they did and talk about their new allowance and any different responsibilities that come along with it if necessary, and most of all, be excited for them - they are taking a big step. I hope you found something useful here either for yourself or for someone close to you.

Tuesday Night Euchre Euchre is a ‘trick-taking’ card game played in groups of 4 with partners. Beginners are welcome because the more players, the better! Join us for Euchre EVERY Tuesday night at the Glenwood Community Hall (and I mean EVERY – these guys show up to play during rain, snow, renovations – you name it!). Registration is at 6:30pm, games begin at 7pm. Anyone (even if you didn’t know what it was until today!) can come to play. Family and Kids’ Stuff… Are you interested in an organized Dog Walk? Some of our neighbouring communities have organized a regular weekly or twice-weekly dog walk through their neighbourhoods. There is a regular time and meeting place, and anyone interested can show up with their dog(s) and walk as a group through the neighbourhood. It is a great way to meet new people, reduce crime in the neighbourhood, and get out with your favourite pet for some exercise!
