JAMIE POST
I began last month's editorial with a "knock on wood" moment regarding May snowfalls, and for those of you who received the May edition of the SPURR amidst shovelling snow and navigating icy sidewalks....in my defence it was warm out when I wrote that ;) Regardless, June is here, the kids are counting the days, vacations are a go, the SPURR has one issue left before an August hiatus, our Community Leagues and Revitalization working groups are having their last meetings before taking a summer break, and while I've still got your attention, I'd like to take some time to talk about, of all things, September. It's been several years since concerned local business owners successfully pushed for the creation of the Stony Plain Road Business Revitalization Zone, and three years since concerned local resi-
Although some work will continue over the summer while we're out and about enjoying the outdoor amenities our communities have to offer, let's spend some time thinking about September, and be ready to claim it for our communities when it arrives. We have four community leagues, and working groups dedicated to connecting, building, and feeling safe in our community, that will hit the ground in September eager to accept new volunteers, and in need of community support to develop a long-term, sustainable vision for the future of Glenwood, Britannia Youngstown, Canora, and West Jasper Place. In the
next several months we face the prospect of losing some of our community schools, and over the coming years, the inevitable, invasive construction of the West LRT. We've been patient, but we have opportunity and resources at hand. Let's all be ready to grab them, jump in, and move Jasper Place towards a vibrant future. dents laid out their hopes and concerns during the creation of the Jasper Place Revitalization Strategy. While gains have been made when it comes to the revitalization's short term goals, the mid-term gains and long-term vision have been elusive. Shifting civic priorities and an extenuating uncertainty surrounding the West LRT corridor have taken a toll, both on our dedicated community volunteers, and our ability to plan decisively for the future.

Building strong, vibrant neighbourhoods means not only developing the physical infrastructure of communities, it is just as important to build social infrastructure. This is also critical in contributing to the health and well being of the people who live, play and work in these communities. To support these social opportunities to connect with neighbours, businesses and organizations, the Office of Great Neighbourhoods founded the NEIGHBOURHOOD REVITALIZATION MATCHING FUND AND SMALL SPARCS GRANT. All community groups and businesses who reside within the boundaries of the revitalization can apply for these grants and they must support and help realize the vision of the Jasper Place Revitalization Strategy. This includes Britannia Youngstown, Canora, Glenwood and West Jasper Place. The Neighbourhood Revitalization Matching Fund and Small Sparks Grant, must meet five criteria: 1. Is the project feasible? 2. Advances the goals and objectives of the Neighbourhood Revitalization (must meet one or more of the following:) a. Safe Streets

The City of Edmonton, Revitalization Coordinators have seen some tremendous events occur that supports neighbours, local businesses and not-for-profit organizations. We just supported the Kids on Track annual event, who hosted a Mother’s Day Event for 80 Mom’s and their children I am currently working with Tailz, who is planning the 2nd annual Dogapalooza event in September. Last year, over 800 people with their dogs attended the events, were educated on important dog owner information, met their neighbours and many small businesses who provide services to their pets. If you would like an application form or would like to discuss more information on this funding program, please call me at 780-495-0321.
May? What will come next? City Council approved the West LRT corridor in December 2009. That approval set the LRT along 87 Avenue, 156 Street and Stony Plain Road. With this approval, work has now begun to determine how the LRT will “fit” into these corridors. That includes determining where the LRT will be located (for example, whether it should be on one side of the street or in the median), plans to manage pedestrian and vehicle access in and out of communities, and identifying specifically where LRT stations would be located. This work will take place throughout 2010. The workshops in May were the first phase of public involvement for this stage of the study. At the workshops, we talked about the project history and how LRT fits within long-term future plans for the City of Edmonton. We then had three specific discussion topics where we asked the participants to review alternatives and give us input on how these alternatives impact the way they use, live, and work within the area. The discussion topics were LRT alignment, station locations and configurations, and neighbourhood/commercial access. Information from the workshops including the presentations and the comments from the workshopsare all online at www.edmonton.ca/LRTprojects. So people who couldn’t make the meeting have an opportunity to review what was presented and what others are saying. If you have more to add, you can send in comments by e-mail to LRTprojects@edmonton.ca.
couldn’t incorporate (and if we couldn’t incorporate it – why we couldn’t incorporate it). The LRT Concept Plan will be going forward to Council for review and approval in December 2010. So, we will host another series of information sessions in November with the plan that will be presented to Council. I understand that the Transportation Department is still in the conceptual stages of planning the LRT expansions for the City of Edmonton. What does this mean? What are the next steps? We are in the process of completing a Concept Plan. A concept plan provides an overarching plan for the LRT within the area, so this means it will define where the LRT will be located within the corridor (alignment), it will define the major infrastructure requirements (such as station locations, grade separations), it will define if any major changes are needed to the overall transportation network to accommodate the change, and it will outline property requirements. The Concept Plan must be approved by City Council. If the Concept Plan is approved, the next step is preliminary engineering. Preliminary engineering is the stage where most of the aesthetic decisions such as landscaping and station design are made. There is more detail determined on technical requirements such as utility impacts. If the West LRT Concept Plan is approved in 2010, the next stage would be preliminary engineering.
Over the month of June we will also be attending meetings and sessions set up by the many community and stakeholder groups. We want to ensure we give people ample opportunity to review and comment on the alternatives. Q & A with Michelle Chalifoux Public Involvement Project Manager – Transportation Planning Could you please provide us with an overview of the purpose and process for the LRT West, Public Workshops in
Over the summer we will be compiling all the input and completing some additional technical analysis. We will return in September with another session where we can present a proposed alignment – and we will report back on what we heard, what we could incorporate into the plans, and what we

THE DIRTY GARDENER
MICHELE HEBERT
I have had requests from readers who have no garden on how to grow veggies in containers. Not a problem. I grow some herbs, such as mint and oregano, in containers only as they have a tendency to spread like crazy where I do not want them to go. Containers work well for apartment balconies, urban rooftops, window boxes and even beside driveways. They add a touch of personality and pizzazz to an otherwise drab space. Start with a container that is at least 8 inches in diameter. Any smaller and the plant will get root bound and not thrive. Containers can be almost anything as long as it has a drainage hole. Never use anything that has been coated with a preservative (such as green wood) or contained toxic materials or chemicals. Clay pots that are not glazed or terracotta pots tend to dry out more quickly and require more frequent watering. Line the inside bottom of the pot with fiberglass screening (found in hardware stores) or landscape fabric (my favourite). This keeps the soil in the pot, and unwanted pests such as earwigs and slugs out. If your pot has a saucer, raise it up out of the standing water with pebbles, gravel or river rocks, otherwise root rot can occur when a pot is sitting in water. For apartment balconies or urban roof tops, lightweight pots are essential. Check with your building maintenance personnel for weight limits. Use a soilless potting mix to lessen the weight. Two key elements are essential for container gardening – adequate sunlight and easy access to water. Keep these in mind when placing your containers. Hauling a
S P U R R JUNE 2010
heavy watering can through your house isn’t fun. Water at least once a day in the mornings, more often if its quite hot and dry out. The container needs water if the soil feels dry at least one inch from the top of the soil. Don’t use regular garden soil in containers – it gets too compacted when wet. Use a commercial potting soil that is specially formulated for containers. Add one part compost or composted manure to three parts potting mix. If your potting mix doesn’t already contain a slow release fertilizer, add a water soluble fertilizer or liquid seaweed or fish emulsion on a regular basis, as recommended on the package. Fill the container with potting mix to within two inches from the lip; the space is needed for the water otherwise the soil will drip out across the top of the pot. Yuck. Sow the seeds directly into the pot, or transplant seedlings. When planting tomatoes (works in the garden also) place a Tums tablet in the hole before placing your plant. My Mom swears by this, and had a bumper crop of tomatoes last year. Also, banana peels buried just under the soil around the tomatoes helps the tomatoes also. Almost anything can be grown in pots; use your common sense. Corn might not do too well. Smaller varieties of sunflowers look great in pots. Swiss Chard (such as the Bright Lights variety) does quite well and looks like a nice potted plant. A pot of herbs near a kitchen door or window is quite handy and smells heavenly. I keep a pot of mint handy for Mojitos. There is nothing like fresh chives or dill with fish or potatoes. Pot up some edible flowers such as nasturtiums, pansies or lavender to add to salads. Plant amongst the veggies, if you like. Tempura battered, deep fried squash blossoms are a real treat. Have a great summer, and happy gardening.
Stony Plain Road Community Clean Up In an effort to enhance community wellness and beautify the communities surrounding Stony Plain Road, the Neighbourhood Empowerment Team as well as other key community partners and volunteers are organizing a community clean up on June 5th, 2010. We will be renting refuse bins and strategically placing them throughout our targeted area; three blocks North and South of Stony Plain Road between 149th and 170th Streets. We believe this strategy will ensure the targeted communities benefit from such a project and help address the issue of accessibility, which often hinders community residents from accessing similar big bin events. Also with the help of 50 to 75 youth who are volunteering their time to serve the community we plan to arrange to pick up items for those who require greater assistance. Volunteers will also, on foot, be picking up garbage within the community. We will also be hosting a Volunteer appreciation and community BBQ after the clean up to celebrate the successes of the day, all are welcome.

You be the Judge…Restaurant Review will be based on the quality of writing and may be edited for content and length. Brado's Pizza 15648 – Stony Plain Road
Congratulations to the following restaurants for the great reviews sent in:
by Laura Nielsen I would like to provide a restaurant review on Brado’s Pizza as it is in my opinion one of the absolute best restaurants I have ever eaten at. I cannot count the number of times I have either taken friends there for lunch or supper as well as the countless number of times I have ordered take out food for my family from Brado’s. We have ordered pretty much everything on the menu. The food is always spectacular no matter what we order. I have eaten chicken wings at many restaurants and I feel Brado’s wings are the best by far. The chicken caesar salad is another of my favorites, not to mention the seafood caesar. The pizza is tremendous, as is the pasta. The burgers are divine. And then there is the steak sandwich – can’t beat the price and the qual-
ity is great. Love the dry ribs and of course the chicken fingers are something my children order regularly. Towering nachos and much more. Whether you just want a light snack or a meal – there is something for everyone. The servings are huge, so bring your appetite and a few friends. The prices are very reasonable as well. The service is always great. The staff are friendly and very accommodating. The owners go out of their way to make you feel at home and appreciated. The establishment is clean and has a very friendly atmosphere. They also have delivery – so on those nights when you don’t really feel like going out to pick up food –
they will bring it right to your door with a smile on their faces. It is definitely a place worth experiencing - a true dining pleasure. A place I have been visiting for over a decade now and will return to many, many more times to come.

A note from your MP “Recently our government announced the re-introduction of legislation to end the use of house arrest for serious and violent offenders. House arrest for serious and violent crimes offends Canadians’ sense of justice and we believe that those who commit serious and violent crimes should serve their time behind bars, not in the comfort of their homes.” HawnL1@parl.gc.ca
