NIGHTS

Another year of great presentations by local artists at the Storefront Cinema Nights which was held Friday October 15th and Saturday October 16th. Friday was a bit chilly but that did not stop the many families and individuals from taking advantage of the free horse drawn carriage ride that went west on Stony Plain Road to 163 Street and back east down 102 Street. Saturday entailed many local productions along with a couple of new unique presentations including Split Screen which was a live production in the BFM store front window. Movie goers also had the opportunity to leave with a memorabilia, their own vintage Polaroid photo for .50 cents. Alberta Arts Council sponsored a piece called Heavy Rock. This was a live fusion of sound and visual projections. Over all a great two nights thanks to Event Coordinator Deanna Kayne, if you missed out don’t worry Storefront Cinema Nights will be back next year however each year is a whole new production so miss a little, in this case you really do miss a lot.

JAMIE POST
I'm going to talk about an important issue this month, it's one I've mentioned a number of times, and I promise to give you a break from it after this. Our communities and our city as a whole are changing as we move into the future and the level of government we interact with every single day of our lives has grown and evolved along with it. The efforts of volunteers such as those in Edmonton's community league movement helped to shape Edmonton over the decades, and as our lives have grown more complex, our volunteer ranks have declined while the role of civic government has grown. Our neighborhoods are undergoing social, environmental, and economic changes, in the midst of debate around policy and plans for residential density and West LRT expansion, statutory land-use planning, and neighborhood renewal. Because of this, we need the involvement of community residents.
PLEASE SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS Without our Advertisers you would not be reading this newspaper. Our Advertisers survive on your business. Please support our advertisers and when you call or visit them please make sure to say you saw them in the SPURR. Thank you.
THE SPURR NEEDS YOU! If you have a story or a photo depicting how life is, was or should be in Edmonton’s west end we would love to hear from you. Please

It’s that time of the year again when we all are preparing for Edmonton’s longest season: winter. With winter comes snow and ice, so I would like to take this opportunity to remind all property owners that the Community Standards Bylaw requires you to clear the public walks around your property down to the pavement within 48 hours of a snowfall.

Communities are diverse things, and having spent some time going door-to-door during the election, I can say that the view of issues and concerns within a neighborhood, are far more complex and diverse when viewed from ground level, rather than top-down. Some can be dealt with locally, through local events and initiatives. Others, however, are more complex, requiring detailed work through city administration and council, civic policy and public hearings. As this happens, through a critical few years in our
road to the future, it's vital that our voices be heard. We won’t be heard if we take an apathetic or detached view of the future. Our lives are complex, and the demands on our time extensive, however, the value of local volunteers is still high, both in bringing local concerns to the forefront, and in holding our elected representatives and civic leaders accountable for the decisions which will affect our future. Editors Notes: Letters to the Editor - The SPURR is now accepting Letters to the Editor. If there’s an issue, concern, or topic of interest you’d like to write about, submissions can be sent to editor@thespurr.ca Letters should be 300 words or less, and must be submitted with a full name, address, and daytime phone number. Feeling Safe in Our Community Survey - Surveys were delivered along with a previous edition of the SPURR, as well, it can be completed online at www.thespurr.ca/jprsurvey/ If you haven't completed it yet, please take the time to do so, as the feedback will be valuable to the volunteers of the JPR Feeling Safe in our Communities committee.

We have a Councillor to represent us, city planners to work on landuse decisions and infrastructure, and community liaison workers from Community Services and the Office of Great Neighborhoods, however, we are the ones who live here. It is we who walk and drive these streets, shop on Stony Plain Road and support our local shopping centres. It is we who report derelict and disorder properties and who see illegal activity in our communities. We care, not because we’re paid too, or elected to, or assigned a portfolio to, but because this is our home. The impacts from the issues that affect our community, from land-use to the West LRT are not “perceived” to us, they are lived.
Clean sidewalks promote physical activity in our communities, but when there is snow and ice on sidewalks, it can be hazardous to anyone trying to get around. For example,
For some Edmontonians, particularly seniors, moving snow can be difficult, and sometimes even dangerous. If you know one of your neighbours has trouble clearing their sidewalk, you can volunteer to help by clearing it for them. Anyone who needs help getting their sidewalk cleared can call 311 for more information on how and where to get help.
of a snow fall to remove the snow and ice from around their homes and businesses. I urge you to talk to, get help or help anyone in your community that hasn’t cleared their sidewalk before calling 311 to complain. Great neighbours make great neighbourhoods.
From November 2009 to March 31, 2010, in the Stony Plain Revitalization Area, there were over 300 snow investigations, but only 33 snow tickets were recorded. So, a big thank you to the nearly 90 per cent of you who cleared your sidewalks after you received your notice, and to everyone who got out in the cold within 48 hours S P U R R NOVEMBER 2010
STONY PLAIN ROAD AND AREA UPDATE
Holistic Urban Market Update DIANE KERELUK (780) 477-5169
For each of us, our personal health is our greatest asset. Without health, we are less capable of achieving our dreams and goals. The foundation of good health is in food and nutrition and we are creating a market that will offer an opportunity to make food a whole lot of fun – for everyone! We hear so many mixed messages about food and our bodies. Our goal is to build the Holistic Urban Market so you will have the straight goods on what works better for the body. We know that proper
nutrition can reduce the appearance of aging – imagine, no botox or cosmetic surgery to lose years off your face. We know that proper nutrition can help build up the immune system. We know foods that can boost brain power. Our bodies have remarkable powers of self-repair and renewal; good food and nutrition kick-start the process and keep it HUMming along. As with every good thing, the process takes time, planning, energy and a whole lot of committed people. Won’t it be fun to have a place where you can hang out and learn some cool healthy cooking tips and learn more about living a
healthier holistic life stye? It’s all in the works. The HUM is being designed for you. So any thoughts you have on things you’d like to see there are most welcome. You can reach us by email at stonyplainbrz@telus.net. Keep checking in the SPURR or our website w w w. s t o n y p l a i n r o a d brz.com for updates and activities and don’t be shy about calling; our phone number is 780-477-5169.
THE DIRTY GARDENER
MICHELE HEBERT
The end of the outdoor gardening season is upon us for this year, but we can get our gardening fix by assessing our indoor plants, and sprucing them up for the upcoming winter season. First of all, plants need a good soilless mix to grow properly with good nutrients and room for roots to spread. Has your African Violet been in that same ugly pot in the
same hard crusty soil for the past three years? It is time for a makeover, and your plants will flourish because of it. The initial pot that your plant is in must have drainage holes, and be large enough to accommodate the roots with room for growth. The pot can be plastic or terra cotta, and then placed in a larger decorative pot on top of marbles or gravel for drainage. Be sure the plant doesn't sit in water, or root rot and an offensive odor will occur. Now update your indoor decor with some nice pots - add some drama with hot colors like red, orange or vibrant purple. Visit your local paint or hardware store if you can't find pots in the colors you
want, and paint them yourself, using a good primer as a base, and then spraypainting or using acrylic paints with a brush. Paint is an inexpensive way to quickly change the look of almost anything. I have even used wallpaper and satin ribbon hot glued to pots to get a specific look for my home. You could even change out your pots to match the holiday seasons (Halloween, Christmas, Easter, etc.). Plants are an integral part of home decor, and your pots should reflect that. We have all heard that certain plants help to detoxify and purify the air in our homes. Winter in Edmonton lasts about six months on average, with our homes shut
up tight against the cold. We need all the help we can get, and these plants are listed as the top ten plants for indoor air purification: Areca Palm, Bamboo Palm, Spider Plant, Gerbera Daisy, Kimberley Queen Fern, Peace Lily, Boston Fern, Dwarf Date Palm, Rubber plant, and English Ivy. Spider plants and English Ivy are easy to start from cuttings or "babies", and are inexpensive in that regard to introduce them into your home, obtaining them from your friends, family and neighbors. A true gardener shares the wealth, and is happy to do so. Until next month, Happy Gardening

Citizens at the meeting of October 14, 2010, commended Edmonton Police Service for the positive impact their bicycle constables have had on deterring crime in the neighbourhoods this past summer. Work Plan for Stony Plain Road Corridor and surrounding area
Feeling Safe in our Communities survey update The Jasper Place Revitalization (JPR) Feeling Safe in our Communities Survey identifies citizens’ concerns about safety in the communities of Britannia Youngstown, Canora, Glenwood and West Jasper Place. The Feeling Safe in our Communities Working Group will continue to collect surveys from citizens throughout the fall. Results of this analysis will be presented to both the Feeling Safe in our Communities Committee Working Group and the JPR Community Steering
seasonal art, and more. The City Snow Shack will operate December 18 to 23, 2010. Winterfest’s community winter activities, for people of all ages, will take place December 17 to 21, 2010. Watch for more details in an upcoming issue of SPURR.
Committee, and recommendations will be made on the basis of the results. The Feeling Safe in our Communities Working Group supports crime prevention initiatives through its budget and volunteer resources, within the mandate of the Jasper Place Revitalization Strategy.
One of the three goals of the Jasper Place Revitalization Strategy is to build community. Achievement of this goal has been facilitated through workshops and public involvement consultations. Many businesses, not-for-profit organizations and citizens have presented their recommendations about how to improve the Stony Plain Road corridor and surrounding areas. The urban design vision that had been approved has now been given the green light to move forward. Phases are to be completed in increments of approximately four blocks at a time, with implementation to begin in 2012. Sometime in late November or early December, a design workshop or open house will take place. Community stakeholders will be invited to bring their feedback on the design and

recommendations. Urban designers and engineers will then work to incorporate as many as possible of the recommendations, after which people will be invited to review the final version. The City of Edmonton plans to go to tender late in 2011. It will be thrilling to see the first phase of this exciting, anticipated improvement to an historic area of the city. Special events update We were proud to be sponsors of the Stony Plain Road and Area Business Association’s third annual Storefront Cinema Nights. Initiatives such as this contribute to our efforts to revitalize the area and to promote the arts, which are important to every community. Plans are in the works for a Winterfest for the four communities in the Jasper Place Revitalization area. Kudos to the volunteers who are coordinating this exciting event. All events will take place in the Britannia/Youngstown Hall and fields. Volunteer committee members are planning indoor and outdoor recreation activities, including snow and ice events,
Newest Giants Mural: Larger-than-life art livens up 100 Avenue Have you seen the impressive art work on the south wall of Westside Automotive, at 10010 – 168 Street? Local artist Kris Friesen was commissioned to design and paint the city’s newest Giants of Edmonton mural, “Our Natural Home.” To begin, representatives (citizens, volunteers and the building owners) came together and shared their ideas around a river valley theme. The artist presented several options and a final design was selected. The mural is another way of bringing art to the community, brightening up 100 Avenue in the process. This wonderful river valley scene links the past with the present, as it shows today’s City of Edmonton in the background and a historic Fort Edmonton in the foreground. The mural was finded by the City of Edmonton’s Capital City Clean Up. Landscaping improvements are planned for the base of the mural in the Spring of 2011.

BUSINESS
CANORA PA R K WAT C H We have been busy planning some of our events for 2011. It seems like a long time yet but once the snow flies so will time. We will be holding our annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 23 on the Canora Greenspace on 149 Street. More details will be available at a later date. We are looking at having a flower planting bee at St Anne Park in the spring. It would also be a great time to have a good clean up in the park after the snow has melted. Please let us know if you would like to come out and help beautify the park. Hopefully the flowers will remain in the flowerbeds this year and not wander off to someone else’s. Our next meeting will be held on November 16 at 7:00PM at Canora Community Hall. Everyone is welcome. If you would like to volunteer with any of the above activities or if you have any suggestions for other events please come out and let us know. You can also contact us at canoraparkswatch@yahoo.ca or call (780) 489 6007 and leave a message for Canora Park Watch.
