FROM THE

President Hello superheroes!! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer break! Go to the beach, hang out with friends, binge watch shows, or DO SOME SERVICE! Summer is the perfect time to get some hours in and help out community. We are two months into the term, and I can already see how far we’re going to go! We have already raised a LOT of money through Election Night and Blacklight Run — thanks to everyone who went to these events and supported our club. Additionally, I am very happy to see the amount of passion you guys have to attend service events and to us creep closer to our hour goal! We have already completed 1000 hours, 8000 more to go! We have MANY events this summer for you to attend! Upcoming is our first official Key Club event for the term, Key Club Training Conference! If you are interested, make sure you fill out the interest form, as spots are limited. Additionally, we have our annual Relay for Life event coming up. It’s truly one of the most impactful (not to mention fun) events of the year, and you won’t regret it if you sign up. Our officers have been working very hard to organize it all for you guys! Aside from these two events, there are, of course, our weekly service events that you can attend. I would like to truly thank each of you for being a part of Piedmont Hills Key Club; we would definitely not be a club without you, and I would not be here without you. Continue doing service, and make sure you relax over the summer; you deserve it! Enjoy this break while it lasts because, before you know it, school is going to start! Flying with Service, Judy Ng Piedmont Hills Key Club President 2018-2019

KELLY CHEN APRIL

MEMBER

OF

THE

MONTH

Kelly Chen was chosen as Member of the Month because of her passion for service! She atends service events almost every single week, and at these events she consistently displays the four core values. She easily makes friends with others from her positive personality, and thus she makes a wonderful environment for both her and other Key Clubbers to be a part of. Congratulations, Kelly!

VICTOR XIE MAY

MEMBER

OF

THE

MONTH

Victor Xie was chosen as this month’s Member of the Month because of how extraordinarily dedicated he is to Key Club. Unfortunately, he did not receive a few positions he was running for, but that did not stop him from continuing to do service. It amazes not only me, but the members of our board as well with how dedicated he is to Key Club. He has attended a multitude of service events, including Election Night, which ran deep into the night. Despite that, he still wanted to volunteer in order to aid our club so we can raise more money for PTP. Additionally, at the service events he attended he is always shown to include members. For example, one time at Color Run he went up to another volunteer and welcomed him into there group even though he came from another school. Congratulations, Victor!

Event Recap

DISTRICT CONVENTION 2018 APRIL 13-15, 2018 DCON every year is a hectic experience, and this year was no different. There is so much planning and so much to do behind the scenes that not many people get the chance to experience, but nonetheless, I believe, is what makes DCON so uniquely fun. This year was the first year PHHS Key Club flew to DCON, and that itself came with it’s own challenges. From scrambling to get boarding passes, to making sure that all legalities were in order, our travel was stressful, but super exciting for everyone! I remember distinctly one of the highlights of my trip by far, was getting the opportunity to go with our faculty advisor, Ms. Murray, to the Recognition office to get our club’s backstage passes. This would inform us of who had been awarded what awards we had applied for, and was essentially one final, very important recognition to many of our officers. When I opened the envelope and flipped through all the names and awards, I remember distantly hearing the chaperoning advisor inform us that our club was one of the most decorated clubs in CNH this year. While I know that DCON is beyond just awards and recognition, I can’t say that the experience I received to walk on stage not once, but twice, are experiences of a lifetime. Adding on the opportunities to watch my co-officers walk that same stage, listen to officers and members from our own club present workshops, sit in the audience of an AJ Rafael workshop and audience, made all the late nights and early mornings worth my efforts. While I did not get much sleep that weekend, each waking hour were memories that I know I’ll remember. I encourage each and every member to attend DCON, no matter the price, because it’s truly a priceless experience. - Megan Luong

Event Recap

COLOR RUN 2018 MAY 26, 2018

The Color Run is an annual event hosted in downtown San Jose, where runners often gather with their families and friends to race through the 5k. The volunteers were able to bond and work together to spray the participants with colored powder. We were also able to play with the powder, covering others and throwing it up to create great photo ops! After the event, we cleaned up the streets and literally brought color wherever we went! - Quynh Anh Le

Upcoming Event

RELAY FOR LIFE MAY 26, 2018

Relay For Life is an annual event that Key Club attends to help promote cancer treatment. For either 12 or 24 hours, members walk around a track in Campbell, to signify that the fight for cancer treatment never sleeps! From decorating paper bags to dropping glow sticks in them, the event includes many sections honoring both survivors and caregivers. Cancer has played a negative role in so many families that we hope to help eradicate it. We are looking forward to donating a lot of money to the American Cancer Society, and to having a great time on July 14-15! Blurb: Jerry Xu Flyer: Emily Vu

FROM THE

Media Director Hey there Superheroes! I hope you're all enjoying summer so far, because this is a well deserved break from school! Personally, I've been sleeping in, making great memories with friends, and going to service events of course! Though summer should be a time for relaxation and stress relief, don't forget about the importance of academics! A new term brings new ideas, such as compiling two months into one newsletter! All of the informational content from newsletters by Stephanie and Amy are similar to this term's newsletters, but it seems their talent in making effortlessly aesthetic graphics didn't exactly pass over to me LOL I want to thank Stephanie and Judy for trying their hardest to teach me the basics of our club website and how to make newsletters! Although my designs may look very different from our past Media Directors' beautifully crafted ones, I hope you all have enjoyed the April and May newsletter! Don't be afraid to shoot me a message whenever about anything! I am always down to talk about anything, such as suggestion on how to help improve the website and the newsletters (please help and give constructive criticism I will love you)! Be on the lookout for the next newsletter in the beginning of August! Nicole Chen PHHS Key Club Media Director 2018-2019
