FROM THE

Treasurer

KATHY TON

Welcome to the first newsletter of the school year! Hello to returning and new members! I hope you all had a good start to your school year, and even if you didn’t, this year is what you make of it! Even with all of the stress that may be on your shoulders, find that silver lining and pursue it, especially if it’s volunteering for Key Club and hanging out with all of us. That’s what makes us an ohana. I can see why you’re all called superheroes! We’ve done a LOT these past two months. Our club has made tons of progress with our PTP, MNT, and hour goals, especially thanks to your attendance at volunteer events and fundraisers. We held a majorly successful badminton tournament in September and went to a major Key Club event, RTC, just last week. We also have OVER 400 MEMBERS, and lots of you have been killing it in terms of attending our meetings. Thank you all for your hard work and helping our club reach new heights! Let’s keep that spirit going. :) A LOT MORE is coming. Fall Rally North is upon us, and if you signed up, awesome! I can confidently say that you will have SO much fun screaming your heart out with cheers, meeting new Key Clubbers from all over our district, and ride rides at Six Flags. Talk about epic. Halloween is here, and what better way to spend Halloween than raising money for charity! Pick up your Trick or Treat box from us any time in October, and take it with you while trick or treating to collect donations, all of which will help fund vaccines for MNT. Remember, you can also volunteer at our events happening every single week! Finally, it’s dues season! Check out my Facebook post for more information, but PLEASE pay your dues. It not only helps Key Club International run smoothly, but it also benefits YOU, the member, in so many ways! That’s all for this month, Iron Heroes! I wish you all the best of luck with school, and let’s keep up the amazing work! Kathy Ton PHHS Key Club Treasurer 2018-2019

MATTHEW SANTOS AUGUST

MEMBER

OF

THE

MONTH

Matthew Santos was chosen as this month's member of the month because he has been attending many events this past month, as well as all throughout summer. Not only does he go to service events, but he also opts to attend DCMs! Recently, the August DCM was held very far away (in Fremont!) from San Jose, where our club is located. Despite that, he still attended the DCM. At the beginning of the DCM, there were icebreakers but no one took the initiative to participate in it. However, Matthew did. At all of the events that he goes to, he is always caring, as seen when he asks others how they're doing or when he offers advice about school.

Event Recap

REGIONAL TRAINING CONFERENCE SEPTEMBER 29-30, 2018 From Sept. 29-30, I attended my first RTC! Before experiencing what RTC was, I’ve heard only great things about it. Everyone always says that their key moment is at RTC and I never truly understood that until I went. On the first day, I was able to meet so many new people from other divisions. I even met another person named Annabelle from D34S! She and her friend Chianie were such amazing people and we plan to meet up at FRN, too! After the downtime we had after getting there, we had a bit of group time, where I was able to bond with my group where we’d make a cheer and a skit for the campfire later that night. It was so fun bonding, and many laughs were shared between us. I had fun listening to the other groups’ cheers and skits, but there was a sense of pride that I felt for my group within me when we recited our cheer. After attending RTC, I realize now why it’s so many people’s key moments. You are able to bond, share, and make new memories and experiences that you will most likely never get anywhere else. We were all there because we shared one common ground- that we all loved Key. That just makes it that more special because even though we had these small competitions, we are still one big family. RTC was definitely an experience that I will never forget, and I hope to attend next year! - Annabelle Tran

This past month, I had the opportunity to attend one of the most (if not THE most) amazing events ever:Â RTC. RTC was an amazing experience because it gave members a chance to interact with people from other divisions, which is a very rare opportunity. Everyone at RTC was super kind and spirited, and I had the time of my life there. My favorite part of RTC would definitely be the campfire, where we performed skits, sang songs, and competed to see who would win first place in heated competitions. Even though I had no phone service and I lost my voice, the new people I met and the experiences I gained more than made up for it. All in all, RTC was truly a breathtaking experience, and I plan to return every year in my Key Club journey. - Vincent Zhu

Event Recap

BADMINTON TOURNAMENT SEPTEMBER 1, 2018 The badminton tournament lasted the whole day and it was very chaotic in the beginning. Fortunately, we had planned everything out and I had a great team of helpers. After the first hour, we were able to get on track and we finished on time with everyone happy! Overall, it was a great experience and I would love to host another one next year! - Tony Hong

I was able to have the opportunity to both help organize the tournament and participate in it, both of which created such a memorable day! I was relieved to see this tournament run so smoothly and content to see so many people show up and enjoy the tournament. This is definitely something I'm looking forward to again next year! - Nicole Chen

Upcoming Event

FALL RALLY NORTH OCTOBER 20, 2018

THOUSANDS of members from the northern part of the CNH district gather to show their division spirit and raise money for the Pediatric Trauma Program. Key Clubbers are decked out in their division colors and spirit battle for the ultimate bragging right, the spirit stick! After the rally, you spend the rest of the day riding rides at Six Flags and meeting other Key clubbers from all over the CNH district!

Upcoming Event

LIGHT THE NIGHT OCTOBER 27, 2018

One of the biggest events of the year is coming up: Light the Night! This is an annual event helps raise awareness for Leukemia. First comes the introductory ceremony, where speeches honor victims and encourage patients who currently have the cancer. Many impactful speeches of the ceremony come from the cancer survivors, whose stories convey a lot of hope and inspiration. Then, there is a lighting ceremony where participants light lanterns (which are given to everyone at the beginning of the event!) and take a couple of laps around the stadium to help “bring light to the darkness of cancer." Not only is this a powerful event that supports an amazing cause, it is also incredibly fun! You can socialize with your friends, take nice pictures, and spend a great night out. I hope you will join me and hundreds of others to “Light the Night”. See you there!

Club Goals 3432/9500+ HOURS $3596.22/$1000 FOR PTP $594.95/$1000 FOR MNT

FROM THE

Media Director Happy Spooky Season, Superheroes! With the fall season comes some pretty exciting Key Club events! Regional Training Conference recently took place during the last few days of September, and Fall Rally North is coming up in just a few weeks! I've got to say, both RTC and FRN are two of my favorite things about Key Club, and on top of that I personally love the fall season. It's a win-win situation! I suppose one stressful thing about autumn is the incoming PSATs and SATs. I wish everyone who is taking any form of the SATs good luck (I sure need it ;.;)! As for the seniors, I hope you guys are ready for college apps! Also, don't forget to eat, sleep, and drink water. Life can get pretty busy, so make sure you take care of yourself physically and mentally too! See you in the next newsletter at the end of November!
