This month, we were able to hold more events than we’ve ever had since the beginning of the term, serving about 4 times as many hours as before! I am extremely proud of the progress we have made, and I know that we will only do better from here! We have also recently released a podcast on YouTube and SoundCloud that goes over the differences between Key Club and Interact and a Bingo Fundraiser where you can dare and embarrass your favorite Key Club officers while supporting one of our preferred charities, PTP. I highly recommend you to check both of those out! Additionally, if you didn’t catch us on Mini Club Day, we now have a member sign-up form that you can find on Facebook! Coming into Key Club, I had no idea what it had in store for me. From meeting friendly people from all over the district to participating in intense spirit battles, Key Club has completely changed my high school experience and I know that it will definitely change yours as well! As we begin another hectic month, I hope that all of you will be able to find comfort in the events we offer and will be able to take a breath away from all of your schoolwork. I know that it can be easy to become overwhelmed, so make sure to look after yourselves and have fun every now and then!

Stay safe, Erin Takeshima PHHS Key Club Secretary

Letter from Secretary

Another month has passed and with it, our first month of school. Hopefully, all of you have been adjusting well to your classes and to the weird schedule! This year has definitely been a new and unique experience for all of us, so it is always good to take a break every once in a while. What better way to do that than to relax while serving your community!

Hey superheroes!!!

EVENT: BE AN OCEAN HERO

EVENT

“M U L T I T A S K I N G Q U E E N Ever since school started, searching things up became my favorite thing to do, and OceanHero recovers one plastic bottle for every five searches. Using this search engine, it allowed me to research and help save the environment both at once. This was so handy! I had to briefly skim 30+ topics for a class so I could pick the most interesting topic to make a project that was worth 15% of my grade. With too many tabs opened, I really hope I was able to help the environment in some kind of way. There was also no specific meeting or session, so I could be searching up stuff whenever I was curious about something, like why we have eyebrows. Anyways, I definitely will keep this app in mind when I need to search something up!

“F I N D M E A T T H E B E A C H” Even with the pandemic, I’ve been trying to find ways to exercise and stay physically active. With the help of Charity Miles, I’ve been able to do just that. From counting up my hours from tennis conditioning miles to getting in those steps just by walking around the grocery store, it was quite exciting to actually have a reason to exercise. It was especially fun when I went to the beach over the summer to have a vacation and family bonding time. I couldn’t believe how easy it was to turn on the app, play volleyball, and just have fun running around the sand. It felt like a win-win situation since I could exercise and also raise funds for one of our preferred charities, UNICEF. I can’t wait to continue exercising with this app long after the event period is over!

EVENT: CHARITY MILES

EVENT RECAP

Initially, I was tentative as to whether this event was a good idea. I contacted the event coordinator directly beforehand to ask how "safe" the event would be, and he replied with a lengthy list of precautions that would be taken. However, the only real precaution we took was putting on hand sanitizers and masks; social distancing is relatively difficult when multiple people are loading food onto the same car. Additionally, I knew getting people to sign up would be a huge obstacle. I tried every possible method of publicizing the event: making a Facebook post, asking the group chat, and, eventually, privately messaging members and officers alike asking them to sign up. Thankfully, Eric reached out and I was able to get a grand total of two key club members to attend. The event itself went smoothly. The system was organized like a fast food drive-through, with cars lining up in front of each group of volunteers and receiving their load of food boxes.

Two hours into the event I was already extremely tired and sweaty. However, seeing the grateful expressions of some of the people who came really motivated me to keep working. A lot of the people who came were elderly who were probably too scared of doing their own grocery shopping, so they needed the food to provide for their family, or even multiple families. In the end, I distributed well over a 100 boxes, and I felt proud that I was able to provide for so many families.

The boxes that I chose to distribute just happened to be the heaviest ones (each one had about 30 lbs worth of assorted fruits and vegetables).

I was mainly weeding the plants, which at some point, got pretty hard to do with the tree pots that were completely filled with weeds and ones with stubborn roots. Note that I did all of this without the gloves I had in my pocket the whole time. My hands were pretty sore and dirty at the end, but at least, I now know how to empty a wheelbarrow properly (turns out I've been doing it wrong all this time)!

EVENT

Being my first event that I led that was in-person, I honestly didn't know what to expect of it at all. It felt nice to get out of the house and everything, but being outside and pretty much always surrounded by plants was a nice change for me. It was a relaxing event, despite planes constantly flying over my head and me sweating from being outside on a fairly warm day.

Project Sunshine Coloring Activities

By: Jasmine Nguyen

“1, 2, 3 - Sending Sunshine! This past month, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to perform some service through Project Sunshine's Coloring Activities. From the comfort of our own homes, everyone was able to draw and create an artwork or even create something as simple as a Mad Libs. I found this event to be very relaxing to do, while also giving us great creative freedom to create what we wanted, as long as it was appropriate for children. Knowing that a child might receive my artwork later and be able to color it in and feel happier made me feel really motivated to draw and perform service at the event. Personally, I created two coloring sheets that were "Color by Numbers," where I numbered each section so children could easily match the number with the color and put it together to form the entirety of the piece in full color. I am very excited to know that they have been sent to children to make their lives a little brighter, and I would highly recommend this event to anyone if we ever do it again in the future!
