“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” -Wayne Gretzky During my shadowing with our current lovely secretary, she gave me these departing words. A quote that has been spoken and heard of millions of times. it wouldn’t be an exaggeration even if I said billions of times. Trying something new is difficult. We all know that. Whenever I come across a novel activity, thoughts of failure flood my mind, trying to drag me back down into the shallow end of cowardice and present comfort. It’s a constant cycle of regret, present in nearly all individuals. The quote is such a cliché, yet it carries a powerful amount of relatability and truth. We often strive to wade in shallower waters because we’re scared of what lies in the deeper area of ambition. If you’re ever second-guessing yourself, just step forward! You’ll never find out what’s underneath the surface of the pool until you dive under. Whether it’s running for an officer position, attending a bonding, or trying out a new hobby, I’m sure that everything will be fine! After all, only in the depths of ambition does light and treasure come about! One of the four core values of Key Club is characterbuilding, and a major part of our character depends on what we do. In order to build on our character, we need to try new things out. Sometimes, things may work for others but not work for us, and that’s alright! It makes each and every one of us unique and defines who we are. It may take a few trials and errors to find that one thing which we love doing, but we’ll find it eventually. If you’re thinking about trying something new, this is your sign to do it. I wish you all luck with all the new things that you may try!

In the past month of January, Stanley Pham has made a noticeable impression among our officers! He is incredibly active despite being just a freshman, signing up for several of our service events every month. He also recently participated in our Red Key-Ross Escape Room Bonding, where we bonded with Red Crossers via “escape rooms” created by the officers through various means. Grinding out so many rooms and using his incredibly large brain to crack through all the codes, he racked up enough points to steal an astonishing second place! From the amount of activity he has shown recently and throughout the term, Stanley has proven himself to be a valuable and dedicated member of the club. We cannot wait to see what he continues to do in the future!

clutched. By: Andy Truong Event: Charity Miles

In the month of February, I again hosted one of my favorite events, Charity Miles! Not only is this event really easy for our members to participate in, but it allows them a lot of time to go outside and get some fresh sunlight. However, this time was different. I decided to go for a long 9 mile run with the Charity Miles app. As I was running through the neighborhood, I failed to realize that my phone was about to run out of batteries. I was 5 miles in and my phone was at a pathetic 10% level of juice. Sweating from the excruciating run as well as the fear of losing power in my phone, I had to make a sprint to my house before it was too late. With no time to waste, I put my phone on low power mode, without turning off the Charity Miles app, and dashed back 4 miles. Clutching at 1% battery life, I found my charger at my bedside and plugged my phone back in, restoring its precious life. I reopened my Charity Miles app and finished my run. Smiling at my phone, I felt glad that I was able to clutch out 9 miles for Charity.

Box of food packages

By: Eric nguyen Event: CityTeam Donations Sorting

It’s a grab bag every time I go to the warehouse in the middle of a landfill. The place was so ghetto that I thought I would get jumped and robbed 3 times over. Luckily, I had brave Jasmine protecting me during the quick walk to the place. The tasks are varied in the place. It can be anything from carrying boxes, folding clothes, or assembling hygiene kits. I had the job of packaging food. I felt like I temporarily replaced one of those Asian ladies that speedpack your groceries into your bag at Ranch 99. Except I was slow. A lot slower. How do those ladies do it? I don’t get it. I got hungry in the middle of the job and they let me eat one of their granola bars that was supposed to be donated. If I weren’t hungry, I think I would have preferred not to taste such an abhorrent mix of raspberry and chocolate. Or, at least that’s what the package described the flavor to be. It tasted nothing like raspberry or chocolate. Heck, if I slapped a raspberry on a piece of chocolate, it would have tasted better. Bleugh. I feel kind of bad that the unfortunate were to receive that. Thus, while packing my bags of food, I replaced those nasty granola bars with the alternative- instant ramen. Clearly, that was a far superior choice to make. And I put two bags instead of one. Lucky them. Although it’s not particularly the most eye-catching or inspiring job in the world, it’s the closest I can get to participating in a hands-on service event in the outdoors. I figured that I’d rather keep my amount of staring at screens at a minimum and not participate in too many virtual events.

Earlier this February, I had the opportunity to present at Officer Training Conference (OTC), which is an event where people train other Key Clubbers about their officer positions! Since it was my first time participating in such an event on the division level, I was both excited and nervous to share my experiences as Vice President. After LTG Emily Vu reached out to me, she added me into a group chat with the other OTC presenters. She paired me up with a Vice President from San Jose High School, Leslie Gomez. Scheduling a Zoom call with her to start the presentation slides, I was surprised with how easy it was to talk to Leslie even though we never met before in person. We discussed the classes we were taking and since she is a junior, I offered some senior year advice. I felt so glad to have made a new friend, especially at a different school besides Piedmont Hills. At our second meet-up, we finished our slides and practiced presenting. By then, we were way more comfortable with one another and talked more about our personal lives. When the day for OTC finally came around, we were both more than prepared. I was so happy after each presentation because our attendees seemed to enjoy and learn a lot from them. Although it was a new experience and it was a little scary to take on in the beginning, I’ve learned that it’s important to take advantage of every opportunity that’s thrown at you. You’ll never know if you’ll meet a new friend or learn something interesting.

From From my my hearT hearT To To yours yours As Presidents' Break was coming to an end, I decided to sign up for this event, From Me to You. The previous week of school was hectic for me, exams and assignments coming from left to right, so I ended up spending the break waiting for my returned assignments. Maybe it was how lighthearted the event was or the relaxing music being played, but for that one hour, I was distracted from all my worries. From doodling happy faces to cute creatures, I focused on spreading joy in hope of uplifting a senior. With the freedom of my creativity, I got to create heartwarming cards with simple yet fun puzzles like connect the dots and mini coloring sheets. At first, card-making can seem like a basic task, but its impact can positively change someone's day. And that's what I love about card-making events, I can uplift my own mood while making thoughtful cards to cheer up others.

KicksTarT KicksTarT To To Learning Learning During the month of February, I was able to educate myself on different topics of racism. Being able to learn about this topic conveniently is very important in today's time. Educating ourselves on these types of topics will help us become more aware of our actions and how to come up with solutions to these racial problems. I was able to read articles as well as listen to podcasts. This event was the perfect opportunity to learn and reflect on these pressing issues. It has also motivated me to learn more about how I can spread awareness and what I can do to help. Learning about racism during Black History Month was also the perfect time to kickstart the learning streak. This month, however, should not be the only month focused on racism. This should only be the encouragement we need to continue to learn throughout the rest of the year.

Red Key-Ross Escape Room Bonding

Speedrunning By: Alice Nguyen To end off the month of February, I attended the bonding between Key Club and Red Cross, and at first I didn't really know what to expect, but after grabbing some of my friends to come with me to the bonding last minute, I had a lot of fun! My friends and I had the goal of going to and completing as many rooms as we could, as we wanted to see what all the officers did for their rooms. Unfortunately, we weren't able to attend all the rooms, but based on the rooms that we went to, most of them proved to be challenging and educational as I learned some new facts about pop culture, and life advice from the Mariah Carey room. I hope that everyone who attended was able to find some fun through this event, and thanks to all the officers from both clubs for putting in a lot of effort into their rooms :)

Greetings superheroes! As winter is soon coming to an end, I hope everyone had a pretty cool February, or at least, I hope you had at least one awesome day in February. There were a lot of exciting events that happened last month that I myself enjoyed, and I hope you guys did also! It’s crazy to think that in a few months, the term will be coming to an end, but if you haven’t already, I hope you congratulated Erin for being elected as next the president for our next term! Woot woot! Anyways, our stickers fundraiser is going on right now, and you should buy a pack or two to support Key Club’s preferred charities! I myself think that all those stickers are very cool 8) Keep on staying awesome, catch you next time, and keep attending service events!

Hello Everyone! Another month of quarantine, another month of fully packed events! The grind for service will never stop as we continue on having fundraisers, elections, DCMs, bondings, collaborations, and so much more! Senioritis has really been kicking in for me but only a few more months and we’re all free from the chains that are public education. We’re moving onto new things! Or, at least I think we are… However, everything is still online, including DCON. Despite this, we’ll still be able to celebrate our annual events, albeit in a completely new perspective. Regardless of whether or not they bring the same experience as in-person events, I still believe we can look forward to these events. I hope everyone still continues to be safe as we should still continue to look forward to the future. (p.s. buy our stickers!!!)

Bzz bzz… As our new president and LTG elect get announced, we near the end of our term! Soon enough, I’ll be released from my shackles! Jkjk- I thoroughly enjoy this position, learned a lot of new things, and picked up some new hobbies along the way. But everyone could enjoy a break from their tasks. But with our new president officially announced, I can rest assured that the next term is in safe hands. Hopefully, Key and the rest of the clubs will return to its outdoor nature next year instead of being forced online. Whereas I agree that there are some benefits to being in this “distant” nature, I think clubs will thrive much better if we were allowed to socialize outdoors. As we near the end of the term, we also near the end of the school year! As a senior, I’m excited to just get outta this prison! It’ll only last so long until I return to a bigger prison, but still! There are only a couple of weeks left until the end of this very interesting school year, so I hope you guys stay hopeful. We just recently released orders for a stickers fundraiser, and sales have been shooting through the roofs! Well, not particularly, but I wished I could say that. If you’re reading this message and haven’t checked them out yet, hopefully you can take a quick look and perhaps even consider making a purchase. If I do say so myself, I think they look pretty neat. And they feel surprisingly nice. Signing out,
