A word from our VP of Admin Happy June Superheroes! It’s crazy how fast one month of summer flies by! I hope that many of you have been able to unwind from the stresses of school by hanging out with your friends (through social distancing), finding a new hobby or talent, or doing activities you enjoy (because you definitely deserve it!). I know that this summer is not like any that you have experienced in the past. The year had a rocky start with COVID-19 and as the months passed by, it just seemed like it got worse and worse...but we can’t let these circumstances stop us from finding innovative ways to reach our goals. Summer is not only a time to relax, but to also think about how you can help your community! As we wrapped up our previous term, our historians crafted a nostalgic club recap video, capturing all of our beautiful memories and everything we were able to accomplish (check it out if you haven’t already!). This month, finding creative service events for our members amid a pandemic was a little challenging, but I’m really glad we were able to pull them off. Some of them included the Sidewalk Chalk project, Love Letters for Literacy, and Dog Toy Making. Just recently, several of our officers and members also had the opportunity to attend the Key Club Training Conference, where we had over 400 Key Club attendees throughout our region learn about skills such as time management and public speaking. It was a really amazing experience so I highly encourage you to attend next year if you weren’t able to this time. I’m constantly amazed by everyone’s hard work and dedication to serving their community. These unprecedented times may be a little scary, but I know that we can make it through it together. After all, “heroes” is in our name and I know each of our little acts of service will go a long way. Stay hydrated and stay healthy, but most of all, stay safe!

member of the month Vivian Nguyen has been constantly volunteering with Key Club despite still being in quarantine! She attended both our zoom sessions for our Love Letters for Literacy event and even attended our May DCM! She not only has an amazing personality, but clearly is a hard worker and we definitely appreciate her for that. We are all happy to see how much dedication Vivian has towards Key Club, and are so grateful for her contributions towards our community! Vivian continues to make an effort being an active member in Key Club and for that, we thank her!

love letters for literacy KCTC

love le ers for literacy An event that I was actually able to organize this June was Love Letters For Literacy. I was extremely excited to be able to hold this event, especially because so many members had signed up for it, and I was not disappointed. Although the event was very simple as we were only required to make flashcards with each letter of the alphabet written on them, everyone went above and beyond to make their flashcards more interesting. Some drew pictures around the edges, others used different fonts for their letters, and a few did both.

All of these flashcards would go towards helping young children read and encouraging them to do so as well to emphasize the importance of it. Knowing that our members put in the extra effort and are not just doing these events for hours, but also to benefit others made me remember again why I love Key Club—each member is passionate about making a change in our world for the better, no matter how small it is.

During the month of June, I participated in Love Letters of Literacy which was a pretty calming experience. Compared to previous events I had attended that required a lot of energy, the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere was a really nice change. In the past, I wasn't super interested in activities like this, but it reminded me to keep an open mind with all volunteering opportunities as they can all be quite fun. In this particular event, we made cards to help children learn the alphabet which was a fairly simple yet impactful activity. Knowing that these alphabet packets could potentially change their lives for the better, it motivated me to put more and more effort into the cards. Even though the concept behind the cards were simple, they could forever impact the children and initiate their love for learning.

For the month of June, I attended one of my most favorite events during this quarantine, Love Letters for Literacy! It was an at home project where we utilized Zoom to record our members' duration of creating alphabet packets for children. I enjoyed being in the call of both members and officers who worked diligently for their cover letters, written notes, and letter cards as we listened to calming music in the background of our meeting. This opportunity I got from Key Club helped children to learn and read better through the letters. It really uplifted my motivation to do the best I could in making the packets, and it was a nice way of uplifting the month of June.

PHHS watering event The month of June was far more exciting in terms of events compared to May. Although still on the low side, there were still a considerable amount of Key-related events to keep anyone accompanied this month if they were looking for something to do over these times. In particular, the first non-online event was released this time around: the PHHS Watering Event! And if there is a more proper term for it, I don't know it. It felt very nice to be able to actually get out and do community service rather than sitting in chairs and attending calls for service. The event itself called for 5 attendees and was supposed to last 2 or 3 hours, but we ended up finishing in less than one. The only task that we were given was to water trees located around the PHHS campus. During my time there, we had specifically 10 trees to water. Once we were done with watering, we simply cleaned up and that was practically the whole event, which perhaps accounted for why it took so much shorter than expected.

It was also supposed to be a weekly summer commitment at first, but due to the couple other clubs present at the event, it's more or less now a monthly summer-long commitment. Things could have most likely been planned better, but being able to see and talk to your buddies not through a camera (with the social distancing guidelines of course) is still far more eventful than staying sedentary at home doing service. Although quite a short event in my experience (the work itself really only took 30 minutes), this watering trees event was definitely a nice change of pace and quite amusing to say the least. I enjoyed it and hope that a couple more similar events pop up throughout the next one or two months, no matter how small or menial they may be.

dog toys June has been a very welcome change of pace for the club, as I think that we have finally adjusted to doing service during quarantine. I was able to attend two events this month, which was a big improvement from May’s zero.

The dog toys event was my first time attending an event from home, and I think this kind of event works very well. We are still able to contribute to the community by utilizing the materials we have at hand in our homes and craft them into gifts or donations, and, through Zoom, we are still able to communicate and count hours. However, I do miss being able to interact with people in person, and, with social distancing in place, we can’t have outside events with too many people. Overall, I we couldn’t have done any better, and I feel that the quarantine is not limiting is from achieving our goals. Aaron Teng

Recap! “ I attended my first ever KCTC with like 900 other people. It was entertaining with the variety of personalities and definitely an experience of a lifetime. There were many things that I've learned during my time that will definitely come in handy in the future. It was refreshing to see the funny and entertaining people within Key Club. It gets me pumped to get to meet all these wonderful people from different districts. All in all, it was really a spectacle and something to remember. ” - Ryan Trinidad, a satisfied KCTC participant Whereas KCTC was hosted via an online meeting this time around, it is still an amazing opportunity for all of you guys to take advantage of when it comes! With a variety of workshops covering different topics to help people ease into the tasks of an officer. If you missed this year’s KCTC, you’re going to have to wait until next year for another valuable opportunity. But until then, there are still numerous other events that offer great learning and service opportunities.

Our Message Hopefully you all are doing well despite this pandemic (and a recent surge of cases). As Kirsten mentioned earlier: stay hydrated and stay healthy, but most of all, stay safe! The palette of this newsletter was inspired by, for the most part, the colors of summer! You can see many summerbased backgrounds, colors, and decor within this newsletter. We hope they slightly convey that feeling of a nice, chill summer vacation since we can’t do much this time around in terms of going out for vacations. Of course, the two of us worked on this newsletter so that we can have 200% the effort (wow ikr) and give you all a quick something to read or glance over in your free time. The last publication wowed us with the read count, so of course that prompted us to keep on pushing out effort for this second newsletter! I hope we can get just as many reads as last time. :P

Hi guys!! I hope all of you have been able to spend this time to the fullest and continue to complete any tasks you have at mind. I know that it’s difficult to find motivation, but you got this! With service events becoming virtual, I encourage you to attend them as we still want to give back to the community in any way that we can. it’s unlike the experiences you probably had before, yet I think that virtual service events are enjoyable in their own aspects! Time has definitely passed by quicker than I imagined and can’t believe it’s July already. As Eric mentioned before, I hope you guys are able stay safe and enjoy your summer!
