Hi there, Heroes!
Wow, a month of summer is already gone. Time flies when you’re having fun! :’) However, it still isn’t too late to make the most of your summer! Go out with your friends, destress your life, and do some

SERVICE. Summer is the perfect time to be getting those hours up and giving back to your community. Make those key-nections! We have made quite a bit of progress into our goals, as you’ll see later in the newsletter. Raising that much money and serving that many hours wouldn’t have been possible without all of you, so give yourselves a pat on the back. We also made a super strong showing at Key Club Training Conference, with a whopping 25 people from our club alone! This was a super fun event, and I highly encourage all of you continuing your Key Club journey to attend. We have a LOT planned for July! Our annual attendance at Relay for Life, an event to raise awareness and money for cancer research, is coming up soon. If you’re attending, look forward to that! We also have a whole host of service events happening every week, including a possible special service project bonding before the new school year, so volunteer, volunteer, volunteer! Keep up the great work for the rest of the summer (and the rest of the term!) We’re called heroes for a reason, and I expect that our club will do some pretty super things over this next month. :) Thank you for all that you guys do, and let’s reach those goals! Flying into service, Kathy Ton PHHS Key Club President 2019-2020

Bryan was chosen as member of the month for the month of June because he has shown a lot of dedication to Key Club with the amount of events he’s attended! By contributing his knowledge as a member for Fanime, to signing up to go to KCTC, to always taking the initiative to develop himself as a leader, Bryan is a super dedicated Key Clubber! We look forward to seeing how he grows over this next term!

by Nancy Duong popsicle popsicle fun fun run run Throughout Popsicle Run, volunteers were split into groups of three to four to do different tasks such as passing out medals, watching over the raffle prizes, and handing out trophies. We also got refreshing fruit popsicles at the end, which felt really rewarding because it was such a hot day. I got to interact with the runners and watch the Independence cheer team encourage the runners, which was so cool!! Despite being a super hot day, being able to cool off with my fellow volunteers at a fun event was definitely worth it! :>>

juneteenth festival The Juneteenth Festival is held annually to celebrate the abolition of slavery in America. This year, I was fortunate enough to volunteer for this festival! Early in the morning, we put up directory signs and moved chairs around the stage for the live music. We also got to help vendors move their items and set up food booths. This event is a great opportunity to appreciate and learn about African culture and I’d definitely recommend volunteering for it!
nerf gun war Nerf Gun War was an amazing way for four different service clubs to come together and have fun! I was pleasantly surprised to see how many people brought nerf guns and bullets, and it was great to see people bonding with each other by talking about their guns and playfully shooting one another. When the game began, everyone tried so hard to win, whether we were on offense on defense. Personally, it was so satisfying to be able to shoot and hit an opponent trying to score a point when I was on defense! The score ultimately ended on a tie, but that just shows how hard both sides fought to try to win! Overall, it was a great way for the clubs to come together in such a unique way to battle it out.

key club training conference
This year I was lucky enough to attend my second (and last) KCTC. Throughout the day we attended various workshops, such as Key moments and public speaking. My personal favorite workshop was probably the public speaking workshop. After lunch, we were able to attend more officer oriented trainings, such as secretary or treasurer. These were really helpful because the presenters had lots of experience and it helped people currently in these positions as well as those trying to decide whether they wanted to run for a sepcific position in the future. One of the highlights from this event was the spirit battle that we had against another division. Although it was somewhat impromptu, the battle was a really fun way to interact with the other division and it was a friendly competition. Another personal highlight for me was just meeting people from the other divisions. I became friends with a guy from Monterey and it was really cool sharing our personal Key experiences with each other. It illustrates just how large Key is and how it can really help set you up with some (pardon the pun) Key-nnections. If you do go to KCTC, I think it is really important to come into it with an open mind. If I was able to attend next year, I would go for sure. It is truly a great experience!
