President’s Note Hi there, Heroes! Happy almost-end of semester! We have just a couple weeks left before our holiday break, so finish strong. Get those college apps in, ace those finals, and kick butt! I believe in all of you. :) We have made quite a bit of progress into our goals, as you’ll see later in the newsletter. Raising that much money and serving that many hours wouldn’t have been possible without all of you, so give yourselves a pat on the back. We’re pushing to reach those goals, however, so keep attending our fundraisers and especially keep attending those volunteer events! In this month, we were also able to host a UNICEF and Key Club movie night, elect our new freshman representatives (be sure to congratulate them!), and raise a whole bunch for the Eliminate Project through our Trick or Treat boxes. We have a whole lot of service events happening in December, so be sure to take advantage of that by going! We also have a super exciting winter clothing drive happening with a bunch of different service clubs on our campus! Turn in any shirts, jackets, sweaters, pants, or any other warm clothing to any officer or at our meeting to get some hours, help out those in need in these cold winter months, and push us to beat other clubs. Finally, we do have a couple fundraisers in store, so help support by going! Be on the lookout for more info on those. This Thanksgiving, I’m incredibly thankful for all of you and the dedication you put into this club. Thank you for being amazing and for being the best club in the world (at least in my heart LOL). Enjoy the last bit of the semester, and I will see you guys on the other side!

Flying into service,

Kathy Ton PHHS Key Club President

Member of the Month Allyson has been consistently attending events and meetings this past month. For example, at our holiday gift box packing event, she worked diligently and productively, all while interacting with others. She brings her bright and bubbly personality everywhere she goes, and her passion for service is definitely evident! It’s been great to witness her becoming more and more interested in dedicating herself to Key Club, and we’re super excited to see how Allyson will grow during the rest of her Key Club journey!

UNIKEY MOVIE NIGHT

from jasmine nguyen In November, I was able to attend Unicef and Key Club’s joint movie night fundraiser, where we watched Kimi No Na Wa, also known as Your Name. We had many attendees and were able to raise a lot of money to split between our school’s Unicef and our Key Club!! It was really heartwarming to see so many people show up, like students from other schools and family members. At the movie night, we also sold various concessions that allowed us to raise even more money towards our goals. The money from the movie night went to the Eliminate Project! At the end of the movie, many people took photos in front of our backdrop and they all seemed to have enjoyed the movie. Overall, our movie night was definitely a success! This has been our second annual movie night collaboration with our school’s Unicef and I hope it won’t be our last! I would definitely recommend everyone attend next year to have a night of fun while also helping to raise money for good causes. 6

RUN, SWEAT, LOVE

This November, I volunteered for Run, Sweat, Love. It was a family run/race that helped benefit running clubs for young boys and girls. Despite having to wake up at 5AM for this event, I really enjoyed attending this event! I was constantly given tasks to do to help set up the race, like filling water jugs or setting up the finish line. Then, after all the setting up, I eventually got put out onto the course to cheer on the runners. The runners were mainly all kids and they would always give me a high five when I cheered them on. Thanks to this event, I also made some new friends from different Key Clubs around the area which is also really nice. Even though this event started pretty early, I look forward to coming again next year!!

One event that I attended in the month of November was the YOF box setup. For about a week, we had collected stuffed animal donations as part of our “Operation Key-ristmas Child”, where we assembled boxes that had toys as well as some essentials. We then sent these boxes to underprivileged kids to help spread some holiday cheer. At the event, we helped fill the boxes with the items donated as well as some other items, like toothpaste, socks, Yo-Yo’s, and Play-Doh. We also decorated the top of the boxes and wrote a little note to make the boxes a bit more unique. Although this event was on the shorter side, it was fun to assemble the boxes and bond with other members and officers. It was cool knowing that taking a little bit of time at a service event would help make someone else’s day a bit more special!

SAFEWAy food drive

from mary tran In the month of November, I was fortunate enough to be able to volunteer at the Safeway Food Drive, which was ran by the Kiwanis. The food drive made bags filled with groceries that would be donated to local families in need with a donation of $10 at Safeway locations. Volunteers helped by passing out flyers with information of the food drive at the entrance of Safeway to customers. Although I was anxious for people to not want the flyers, there were many people that were interested in the food drive and it made me glad to see that there were effort in the community being done to help those in need. I also got a chance to talk with a lot of Kiwanis members and costumers about their experiences regarding the food drive. It was great being able to have some impact on the food drive and I would definitely attend again.

In November, I went to my very first Turkey Trot. Since Turkey Trot is a super popular, annual event, the sign ups always close up very quickly, but this year, I was able to go and experience it for myself. At the event, volunteers were supplied with snacks, coffee, hoodies, and even handwarmers! The event coordinators were also very nice and appreciative of the volunteers. One of the coordinators made sure all of the volunteers was awake by walking around, squeezing a chicken toy, and passing them out to random people, which was really really funny. During the actual race, I was surprised by the amount of people that were running in it. It is definitely one of the biggest, if not the biggest, running event I’ve ever been to. As a corral monitor, I helped hold a caution tape to separate each heat, and there were 5 different heats, splitting up 25,000 runners. Overall, it was an enjoyable event that I look forward to going to next year again!

EDITOR’S NOTE What’s buzzin, bees? Thank you for reading through the November newsletter! I really appreciate your support. We made it through half of the term already, but there’s still a few more weeks to push through to make it through half of the school year, so keep it up. It might be hard, but I believe in all of you that we can do it together. If you ever want to take your mind off of school, turning your attention to our club goals is a great way to do just that! We have many upcoming events that I hope to be seeing all of you guys at really soon. Although we are working towards a service hour goal, remember that volunteering is just for the benefit of the community and allow you to feel a sense of satisfaction that you were able to do some good for the world. If you don’t have time to attend these events, participating in our fundraisers is another great way to get involved. If you’re feeling a little broke after Black Friday and Christmas shopping, no worries! You can still donate to our winter clothing drive! Thank you all so much for your endless support throughout this entire term. Let’s keep it up and finish the rest of the term just as strong!
