Member of the Month: Sokunthea Mau During the past month of September, Sokunthea Mau has made a noticeable impression on our officers! She is a freshman that recently joined Key Club and yet has been super active! She contributes to Zoom calls during service events and is overall such an amazing character. We appreciate her dedication and commitment and hope to continue to see her at our service events! Thank you for being such a kind and social butterfly, Sokunthea!

Ann Chung - Charitable Searches

Tanner Ngo’s 1000th search on the Charitable Searches Engine!!

In the month of September, I was able to volunteer with an online search engine called "search scene". With this charity, each search contributes to saving our planet. This event was very simple and rewarding because I was able to search up all of my random questions while helping our environment. I simply dumped all of my random thoughts onto the search engine as many times as I could. Seeing the number of helping hands on the top corner increase with every search motivated me to continue searching with the engine more. This was a very relaxing, stress-free way to serve the community and I will definitely do this again in the future!

While we were expressing our gratitude to the military and their caregivers, my friends Andy Truong and Eric Nguyen were awesome for joining me in the conversation. I hoped that it would inspire others to join in, but just having them two was more than enough. It reminded me of a podcast where we would talk about a variety of topics and give our own take on it. We talked about lectures, shows, and even current events happening in our lives. I felt like we kicked off the break right with a cool podcast and at the same time sending love and gratitude to the military!

Event: D12E Captioning Educational Youtube Videos

Alice Nguyen

When signing up for this division event, I was mostly thinking about how this event would help me learn to be more familiar with how videos are captioned, and how my work would let more people be able to watch the video.

It seemed like an individual event that required your full attention, so I sadly could not talk to my friends or bond with people a lot while doing this event. However, I did not think that I would learn new outside information such as how to be more sustainable, or useful night and morning routines! I was surprised by how many videos were not captioned, ranging from all sorts of topics that a lot of people would find interesting or useful to learn about. Although the process of captioning videos could be frustrating at points, rewinding back a few seconds to try and catch what the speaker is trying to say, and getting the perfect timing for the captions to come in, I enjoyed this event much more than I expected! If there was a second session for this event, I would definitely sign up!

Regional Training Conference As a part of my many Key Club firsts, this year's RTC created a lot of memories that will be difficult to forget. I learned a lot from the round-robins and workshops, but the time in between those workshops was also very interesting‌ Since it took awhile for the presenters to shift around the different groups, my breakout room had a lot of time to ourselves and hold our own concert! I definitely never want to sit in front of a computer for nearly five hours two days in a row ever again. However, everyone in that Zoom call made all those hours worth it, especially my group Sonic. Being a person that has trouble getting to know people well quickly, it was great and almost accomplishing to get to know 30 new people over the course of two days. Some key moments for me during group time were my leader's motivational talk, the skribblio games (I failed miserably at this), and the bonfire games with all of the other groups. This was when I felt the most hyped I had ever been in a very long time; everyone in the group was typing in the discord chat, was cheering on their teammates, clarifying the somewhat confusing rules, or explaining how we actually misunderstood the game's rules and missed out on scoring points for that event. RTC is absolutely 10/10 and definitely something I can't wait to be even better next year!

Among Us... My final Region Training Conference was definitely a unique experience. Although it was different from our usual cabin times at Camp Jones Gulch, the Region 9 and Region 17 Lieutenant Governors all did an amazing job adapting to our circumstances and executing an amazing RTC! Even though it was definitely hard having to sit on the computer for almost ten hours over two days, it was worthwhile to attend all the workshops and round-robin sessions. I learned so much from all of them and I think that I was able to take lessons away from them that I can use to improve myself as an officer and a leader. My favorite part of RTC was my group. We had the opportunity to play the game Among Us with each other and that was a really fun experience! One of the most memorable parts of RTC were the games we played during the bonfire session. My group was the Fire Emblem group, with District News Editor Nancy!

Despite it being a little hard for our group to warm up at the beginning of RTC, we had a type of competitiveness and shared ambition to do well during the games. We were all fueled to come together as Key Clubbers with a common interest and show our excitement to do well in the games.

In fact, we eventually ended up winning the event, and I'm super proud of my entire group for doing that. Overall, RTC was an amazing experience and I hope that everyone gets to experience it at least once in their Key Club journey, whether it be virtually or physically. :)

After many delays, I was able to volunteer with TutorBridge for a small span of time as part of their extended summer program. The event works by pairing a tutee with a tutor to schedule times where the tutor can assist the tutee in any subject that they may want to learn. For example, I was paired with a 5-year-old and simply went over basic concepts, such as spelling and counting. I also prepared a few worksheets for her to do and books for us to read. After communicating with the parent of the child, we decided that each meeting be around an hour. Additionally, I was actually given freedom on activities to complete at our meeting. To be honest, the first meeting was not as I expected it to be, because the first five minutes were of her crying. This was mainly due to her parents signing her up for the program without her opinion, but we were able to talk it out well. It was really nice speaking to my tutee and learning more about her aside from her academic capabilities.

very cool

We spent a solid 30 minutes drawing and discussing our pictures, so it was really fun to be able to connect with her during the sessions. However, since this was my first time turutring, I found myself saying "very cool" or "wow" when I tried to compliment her. Yes, I know I sound so boring, but I was trying my best to sound enthusiastic. Maybe, when this event does recur for a fall period, I might develop my vocabulary to compliment others to more than just two words. Overall, I would say that this event was rewarding to participate in and would recommend it to others.

Hey there, buzy bees! Unfortunately, Mary was overworked with the two positions that she holds, so she will be temporarily giving up her post as media director. But in the meantime, we now have publicists Alice and Adora in to help with the newsletter! Despite my initial reluctance to give the publicists any extra work, I am very proud of their work throughout this newsletter. Having them help out improves the whole newsletter quality as a whole, which is the main advantage of a small team on one newsletter. My philosophy when it comes to group work is that the overall work is not divided amongst the people but rather boosted as a whole. It’s possible that I could do it on my own, but I would have to divide my time throughout more pages and sacrifice some of the previous quality that I value so much. Without them, I would not have spent 10 hours to develop just these two pages. :PP There’s no doubt I enjoyed working with them and would gladly work with them again if their schedule allows it. Anyways, I hope you can determine this month’s theme; I believe we collectively made it bluntly obvious. If not, hopefully this next part will help. We’re officially out of the summer quarter, and I’m surprised that this is already the FIFTH newsletter that has been put out. Time flies by, to put it shortly. Personally, It’s always a rewarding process for me to be able to put out a recap of the month in a compact package of digital art, a couple of pictures, and some articles. I hope to continue serving y’all as your media director and producing as best of a work that I can!

Until next time,

What's up everyone!

Ello Everyone!

Hopefully, everyone has been staying safe as the air quality worsens and Covid still goes on, but wow, September was filled with so many service events! If you attended any of the service events held by the officers, I hope it made your day a bit better as we always try to make events as interesting as they can be. This month, we were able to successfully carry out our first fundraiser of the term, which was the Bingo Dares, so thank you to everyone who participated! Don't fret if you weren't able to participate in this fundraiser though, we have another one coming up, which is the League Tournament.

As the months go by, everyone is getting real busy! Hopefully, you’re using your time wisely now ahaha. Now you may be wondering (or not-), “Adora! What are you doing here on the September Newsletter?” Well, let me tell you...

Anyways, now that the first grading period is over, I hope that everyone is doing okay, but for those of you that are not, I wish you and everyone else the best of luck in the next grading period! To end it off, if you've made it this far, thanks for reading and I hope you appreciate Adora's, Eric's and my efforts to make this newsletter possible as it's the first time Adora and I got involved in making the newsletters. Keep staying safe and hope to see more of you in future service events soon. <3

2020-2021 PHHS Key Club Publicist

Going into this publicist position, I didn’t think I’d have to participate in much of the digital designs but look at me now…*silence* More than anyone, I am disappointed in myself for not being able to do as well as I could have for the art we present in Key Club. If you could give me feedback, I will gobble that up, process it, and spit it back onto the project because as someone who’s never really done digital art, I will strive to reach the standards. Trust! I hope to learn and grow from helping out with the newsletter while also collaborating with our dedicated media director / my co-pub. Stay safe, everyone. P.S. I heard attending service events will make the Key Club officers REALLY happy--yup:D
