Introduction

In August, I was able to meet and greet many new members at our August DCM and mini club day! At the August DCM, we made dog toys and I was able to interact with others by asking them for different colored cloths or working together to cut up old T-Shirts. This was definitely a great service idea that I will keep in mind to use if we are ever in need of one! Our mini club day was a huge success where we handed out free antique metal keys with tags that said "Join Key Club" on them. People loved it and were convinced in joining our club with our advertising! I am truly looking forward to the year meeting even more new members and befriending them in a year full of service and fun!

This month, I attended Italian Family Festa. It was an amazing volunteer event because I was introduced to the Italian culture. I worked at the bocce ball booth and it was a lot of fun learning how to play the game. I didn't know how to play the game at first but I gradually got better as I continued playing it. The people at Italian Family Festa were all super kind and they joked around with us, too. They made me feel welcomed and appreciated. Also, the food was super yummy! I'm super excited to go next year.

This month I attended the Family Lunada at the Children's Discovery Museum. At this event, volunteers were able to help out at different stations throughout the museum. Some monitored the booths, while others passed out food and drinks. We were exposed to Mexican culture; the music, food, and vibe of the event were all very unique and fascinating. Everyone was having fun and meeting new people. Towards the clean up portion of the event, we were told to stack chairs; however, we accidentally stacked them backwards! Despite this mistake, the volunteers and the staff worked together to fix the mishap. Once the last chair was properly on the rack, everyone cheered, and we were all proud of what we did. Overall, the event ran smoothly and the volunteers were able to enjoy the event while doing service. I look forward to attending this event in the future.

This month, I had the opportunity of attending the Italian Family Festa at History Park! It was a really fun, relaxed event where we were all split up to different stations depending on where we decided to help. I was sent to the Bocce Ball area which is a very traditional Italian game similar to bowling. Aside from helping with the booth, I had the chance to explore around the festival as well and there were plenty of interesting booths and vendors selling a variety of goods. Finally, at the end of the event, we were treated to super delicious spaghetti and it was definitely a bonus to this event. All in all, from the food to the people,
Italian Family Festa was a wonderful event to attend, and though I may not be a member for next year's event, I'll definitely try to attend and play some more Bocce Ball!

With the new school year beginning, I attended one of Piedmont Hill's annual event: Mini-Club Day or Club Rush. More than forty clubs at our school gather together in the Senior Glen, advertising like crazy and persuading any nearby freshmen to join their club. Key Clubbers from Piedmont were fully decked out in spirit gear and were gathering interested groups from left to right. Our tallest board member, Yash, was walking around the field holding our club banner and was a sight to behold among the tiny freshmen. The day was vibrant, energetic, and our board was enthusiastic to recruit some new members! Our table was extremely crowded for the entire lunch period and we had completely sold out of the mini keys we were giving away. The event was amazing and hectic as I remembered one year ago but instead of me being an indecisive freshmen, I was the one encouraging new high-schoolers to join a service club. The change of perspective had shown me how much Key Club had allowed me to grow as a leader and how one club could impact my confidence and self-empowerment. Whether as a general member or an officer, if you are surrounded by a courageous and optimistic Ohana like Key, you are destined to evolve or improve!

Getting to Know the MOTM

Claire Phan

WHO IS YOUR HERO?

My hero is my mom. I can always count on her when I need her and she's always making sure that I'm okay. Despite all the times I've been a not so great daughter, my mom has always tried to be the best mom she can be. My mom is my hero because I know, without her, I wouldn't be able to do a lot of things that I have done today. She has showed me that she loves me unconditionally (which can be pretty hard at some times) and always puts her children before herself. Even though my mom has never saved the world, to me, she's just as heroic as Superman.
