PIEDMONT’S EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT Partners with TeamHealth to provide ER Services

S

ince March of this year, PMC has partnered with TeamHealth, a leading physician services organization, to assist in caring for patients who visit our Emergency Department. Through this partnership, TeamHealth has collaborated with PMC’s clinical teams to double the number of medical providers and maximize operational efficiencies to enhance patient care while improving both patient and staff satisfaction. Founded in 1979, TeamHealth is a national physician services group that shares a culture of hardTroy Mitchell, MD working, caring individuals providing quality healthcare to patients and families. In 2015, TeamHealth was named among “The World’s Most Admired Companies: by Fortune magazine. In 2014, TeamHealth was named among “America’s 100 Most Trustworthy Companies” by Forbes magazine.

Dr. Troy Mitchell currently serves as the TeamHealth Emergency Department Medical Director. In this role, Dr. Mitchell provides clinical and operational leadership for the ED team. He is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine. “My motto as a physician is to treat everyone like family and leave every place better than the way you found it,” said Dr. Mitchell. He works closely with the Director of the Emergency Department Michele Walk, RN, BSN, to find collaborative ways to enhance the overall patient experience. PMC’s patient-centric culture paired with TeamHealth’s reputation for quality is a natural fit and forges a partnership that will build upon the strengths of both organizations.

CEO CO RN E R

P

iedmont Medical Center is proud to welcome Bradley S. Talbert, FACHE, as our new Chief Executive Officer!

Brad joined us on June 20th and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our team. He has held multiple administrative jobs in healthcare, most recently as the CEO at Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville, SC, since 2012. There he led efforts to grow the organization as a patient-focused healthcare provider, resulting in Coastal Carolina Hospital being awarded two consecutive “Circle of Excellence” recognitions within Tenet Health. Tenet’s Circle of Excellence is a designation reserved for the best performing hospitals in the company.

Good leaders listen more than they speak. Effective leaders will learn more from those they are leading, than those who are being led will learn from them. – Bradley S. Talbert

Brad earned his Bachelor of Arts in Finance from Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, and his Masters of Health Administration from the Medical University of South Carolina

in Charleston, SC. Prior to joining Tenet as Market Vice President of Business Development and Chief Operating Officer of Tenet’s Hilton Head Hospital in 2008, Brad served as chief executive officer at Kindred Hospital in Charleston and Select Specialty Hospital in Memphis. Brad is proud of his record of collaboration with physicians, patients and community leaders to effectively grow the presence of facilities he has worked with in the past. He plans to bring this valuable experience to Piedmont Medical Center. Brad has always been a well-respected leader in his community and within the healthcare industry. When asked what makes a person a good leader, Brad said, “Good leaders listen more than they speak. Effective leaders will learn more from those they are leading, than those who are being led will learn from them.” Outside of his time in the office, Brad is an avid Clemson football fan and an outdoorsman. He enjoys hunting and fishing, along with the occasional round of golf, and spending time with his family.

Please join us in welcoming Brad to the PMC family!

AS THE SUMMER COMES TO A CLOSE, IT’S TIME TO GEAR UP FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR. HERE ARE A FEW SAFETY TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND AS WE WELCOME THE ACADEMIC YEAR BACK INTO OUR DAILY ACTIVITIES: • D rivers should avoid speeding and distractions while driving, such as texting, talking on cell phones, eating and adjusting the radio.

• B e alert for children playing and gathering near bus stops and for those who may enter into the street without looking for traffic.

• Always wear a bicycle helmet, no matter how short or long the ride.

• I t is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. Traffic in both directions should stop on undivided roads when students are entering or exiting a school bus. • A lways buckle up in the car and follow pedestrian safety rules. It can be dangerous to text or talk on your cell phone while driving.

• Remember to share the roads with pedestrians, motorists, and school buses.

TEAL PUMPKIN PROJECT

O

ctober is coming up fast and Halloween will soon be top-of-mind for many children in our community. This candy-filled day could cause children with food allergies to miss out on the fun. That’s where the Teal Pumpkin Project should come to mind. Launched as a national campaign by Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) in 2014, the Teal Pumpkin Project™ raises awareness of food allergies and promotes inclusion of all trick-or-treaters throughout the Halloween season. FARE’s Teal Pumpkin Project™ promotes safety, inclusion and respect of individuals managing food allergies. This nationwide movement offers an alternative for kids with food allergies, as well as other children for whom candy is not an option, and keeps Halloween a fun, positive experience for all! If you are interested in being a part of the Teal Pumpkin Project, visit the website below.

2016 TENET HERO WINNER Jimmie Sherrill, Community Health Coordinator.

P

iedmont Medical Center had the honor of recognizing Jimmie Sherrill, ADN, RN, as our 2016 Tenet Hero. She is currently the Community Health Coordinator and has been with Piedmont Medical Center since 2006.

Jimmie’s friends and coworkers had the following to say about her:

Jimmie is always looking for ways to improve herself, her Jimmie Sherrill, ADN, RN team, her hospital, and her community. One way she does this is by hosting yoga classes for employees as a means for managing their stressful lives. She also played a major role in the creation of PMC’s “Heart Age” program for the community. Through this program, people can compare their heart age to their biological age. The hospital received numerous testimonials from program participants who made lifestyle changes after getting feedback from their heart age assessment.

What an honor to work with Jimmie! She’s a perfect representation of what nurses are all about. Just love her!

Jimmie has also developed several successful educational programs that have increased heart health screenings for adults statewide. She worked with the Heart2Heart Foundation to create its “MISSION: RED Heart Health Symposium for Women” and its “Coronary Calcium Scoring” screenings.

6

“ “ “ “

I count the day I met you as one of my best days ever! Thank you so much for your love and friendship! You will always be my hero, too!

Without a doubt Jimmie is the kindest person – being with her makes me want to be a better person and a better RN.

You are 1 in a million! Thank you so much for your tireless commitment to saving lives!

Piedmont Medical Center is proud to have Jimmie Sherrill on our team. Congratulations!

ow-Dose Computed Tomography, or LDCT, is now offered for screening patient’s lungs who have smoked in the past. Low-Dose Chest CT scans are more sensitive for detecting small abnormalities deep within the lungs where tobacco can cause the most damage. The best part is that radiation exposure is kept to a minimum and is comparable to a routine Chest X-ray. Discuss with your doctor if a Low Dose Chest CT would be helpful in screening your lung’s health.
