MAKING THE RO U N D S

SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS with Lindsey Neal.

L

indsey Neal, RN had laparscopic gastric bypass roux-en-y in November 2016. Dr. Borhanian performed Lindsey’s surgery at Piedmont Medical Center. Since her surgery, Lindsey has lost 131 pounds! Now, Lindsey is the PMC Bariatric Program Coordinator and guides surgical weight loss patients through the program from start to finish. Learn more about her weight loss journey below. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO HAVE WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY? After years of struggling with my weight and yo-yo dieting, I wanted to change my unhealthy lifestyle habits and be an active aunt for my 2 year old niece. I was tired of faking happiness and a lot of my unhappiness was due to my weight and health. HOW DID YOUR LOVED ONES REACT TO YOUR DECISION?

Lindsey Neal before gastric bypass surgery My family has been very supportive and positive along my journey. Of course they were all worried about me actually having surgery but after educating them on just how much the benefits outweighed the risks, they were more at ease.

HOW DID YOU PREPARE MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY FOR SURGERY? I did a lot of research first! I have always been an athlete but tried to remain as active as possible even at my highest weight. I knew my body would be more prepared for an increasingly active lifestyle if I did some kind of activity while I prepared for surgery. The mental preparation is the most important! I knew I got to my highest weight because I was addicted to food and I coped with difficult times in my life by relying on food. So in preparation for a lifestyle change I went to therapy. You can’t expect to change your eating habits if you do not address what is causing you to run to food or “medicate” with food. If you don’t change that relationship with food then the surgery was for nothing because bariatric surgery is a “tool” and not a quick fix. WHY DID YOU PURSUE THE BARIATRIC COORDINATOR ROLE? My favorite part of my job as a nurse has always been education and the role as Bariatric Coordinator is all about education and interacting with people. I also knew my journey and surgery would give me unique perspective that may benefit future patients. I was in the exact same position as my patients less than a year ago. The final reason I knew this role would be a good fit for me is that it keeps me focused and accountable in my own journey. WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO SOMEONE ON THE FENCE ABOUT HAVING WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY? Everyone deserves a second chance but you have to want it for you! Take your life back. If you are not ready to address your issues and pursue healthy eating habits then the surgery and all the hard work getting approved for the surgery will be for nothing. This testimonial reflects the results achieved by this patient. As each case is different and must be independently evaluated and managed, actual results will vary.

We’ve received the following note about the members of the Surgical Care team.

L ET TERS

I wanted to let someone know about the wonderful care my daughter, Kelly, received during her recent hospital visit for outpatient surgery on Feb 10th. The entire staff should be commended for their excellent care. From Pre-op with Vancer to surgery with Tiffany and Emily to PACU with Susan Schweitzer and back again in One Day Surgery recovery with Vancer and Susan Stone, the care was outstanding! Dr. Crawford was also an integral part of this great patient experience – he is a very special person and a wonderful surgeon who continues to go out of his way still, weeks after her surgery, to ensure her continued success in recovering. Kelly and I wanted to personally thank Susan and Vancer especially, for their compassion and patience while she had a difficult time recovering that afternoon from the effects of anesthesia. I believe the words Kelly used to describe them as well as the rest of the staff at PMC were 'first class,’ and I agree! If I missed anyone else who was involved in my daughter's care, I apologize – you were truly appreciated! And to the entire staff at Piedmont Medical Center, I thank you wholeheartedly.

– Tish Bennett and daughter, Kelly Ballance
