T

he Triad is in the central Piedmont of North Carolina and is made up of three cities — Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem — and many smaller surrounding communities spanning 12 counties. The Piedmont Triad has an estimated population of 1,640,717, making it the 31st-largest metropolitan area in the United States. The area is known for its mild climate, low cost of living, and distinguished colleges and universities.

GREENSBORO

Location: Established in 1808,

Greensboro is the largest city in the Piedmont Triad and the third largest in the state. The county seat of Guilford County, Greensboro’s proximity to Piedmont Triad International Airport, interstates I-40 and I-85, and U.S. 29, make it easily accessible from all areas of the Triad.

Population: 279,639 Points of Interest: The International

Civil Rights Center and Museum opened its doors in 2010 and is a memorial to the Greensboro Four who famously staged the 1960 sit-in at the Woolworth’s lunch counter and ignited the Civil Rights Movement. Greensboro is also the home base for the Greensboro Grasshoppers, a South Atlantic League baseball team, and the Carolina Dynamo soccer league. The Wyndham Championship (formerly the Greater Greensboro Open), one of the oldest national PGA Tour golf tournaments, is held every year in Greensboro, and the city has hosted the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) basketball tournament for many years. The city also has an active and diverse arts community. Events and venues range from the nationally acclaimed annual Eastern Music Festival to Weatherspoon Art Museum, to the cutting-edge performances of the professional Triad Stage theater company.

Colleges and Universities: The University of North Carolina at Greensboro; North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University; Guilford College; Bennett College; Greensboro College; Elon University School of Law; and Guilford Technical Community College.

In 1913, the two towns became one.

Population: 236,441

Points of Interest: Old Salem historic

district showcases the culture of the Moravian settlement in North Carolina during the 18th and 19th centuries, re-creating shops, churches and houses. PUBLIC SCHOOLS Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools wsfcs.k12.nc.us

Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools Administrative Offices 475 Corporate Square Drive, Winston-Salem 727-2816 Superintendent: Dr. Beverly Emory Forsyth County has the fourth-largest system in North Carolina and the 78th-largest in the nation. What makes the school system unique is that parents have a say in where their children go to school. Elementary and middle

schools are divided into zones, and families can choose from among the schools in their residential schools each spring during the Schools of Choice process. Parents can choose from their neighborhood schools, another school in their zones or from 15 magnet programs (two magnet schools are by random drawing). High-school students can earn college credit in more than 30 Advanced Placement courses, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and courses at local colleges and universities. The school system has 43 elementary schools, 14 middle schools and 15 high schools. Nine special schools bring the system-wide total to 81 and serving about 54,000 students.

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools offers 17 magnet schools in grades K-12. Each magnet school offers a challenging curriculum and the support that students need to expand their horizons. Students have the opportunity to continue in a magnet program from kindergarten through grade 12. CHARTER SCHOOLS Charter schools provide parents a choice in the education of their children — and it is a public choice. Charter schools are tuition-free; funding comes from federal, state and local taxes. Charter schools are governed by either a board of parents and community members or a private educational-services firm. The schools have open enrollment with no discrimination or religious associations. To enroll in a charter school, parents must contact each individual school to see if it has openings. If they have more applicants than available slots, an open lottery must be instituted to fill the remaining spots. Charter schools have several flexible opportunities in their day-to-day operations that do not exist with traditional schools; for example, hiring noncertified teachers, hiring teaching personnel on at-will contracts and negotiating personnel salaries. The state requires 75 percent of charter school teachers in elementary school to be certified, while 50 percent in middle and high school must be certified. However, charter school teachers must follow NCLB re-quirements for highly qualified staff. All charter schools are required to take the state-mandated tests. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Charter School Office oversees charter schools across the state. For more information:

amily outings can be just as educational as they are fun. There are lots of interesting places throughout the Triad that provide glimpses into our rich, historical past. These venues engage all the senses, making learning history and bonding with the family enjoyable and memorable.

Boone’s Cave Park, Lexington Let’s begin by transporting all the way back to 1750. What child could resist retracing the footsteps of Daniel Boone? At Boone’s Cave Park in Lexington, your family can explore the same rivers and woodlands Boone traversed as a teenager when his parents settled beside the Yadkin River. Smell the rhododendron and mountain laurel he smelled. Look way up into the branches of North Carolina’s tallest Eastern Cottonwood tree. Hide in the cave where Boone retreated for some alone time. For older children, hiking, canoeing and kayaking serve to bring alive the exciting adventures Boone experienced as he transitioned into manhood. Picnicking, birding and camping are also popular activities at Boone’s Cave Park, where you can let go of modern stressors and enjoy the unadulterated beauty of the mid-18th century. The park is located at 3552 Boone’s

Cave Park Road, Lexington. From May through September, it is open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sundays. From October through April, the park closes at 5:30 p.m. Call 242-2285 for more information about the park and special events held throughout the year.

Old Salem, Winston-Salem When you enter the manicured grounds of Old Salem, the Moravian community located at 900 Old Salem Road in WinstonSalem, you will find yourself transported back to 1766. And that’s just the beginning. From period architecture to townspeople dressed and living the parts, your family will be immersed in pivotal Southern history leading up to post-war mid-1800s. During the summer months, children love to participate in Salem Sleuth. A brochure guides them through each building, where they must obtain a special stamp. At the end of the sleuth tour, a

Tickets range in price from $11 to $26 for adults and from $5 to $13 for children depending on how much you want to see and how many days you plan to visit. Visit oldsalem. org. For hours, tickets, event details and more, or call 721-7300.

The Outdoor Performing Arts Center, Snow Camp Before making our way into the 20th century, let’s take a short break with some historical fiction. While technically spectators, the audience is drawn into the 1880s nautical world of the young Jim Hawkins at the production of Treasure Island at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center in Snow Camp. Hawkins is the only person able to successfully navigate a schooner to the legendary island known to possess buried treasure. But along

the journey, the ships cook, John Silver, works to break down trust onboard the vessel. This play, adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, sweeps everyone into a world of deception, greed and adventure. While this version was adapted for youth audiences, the humor spans generations ensuring patrons of all ages are thoroughly entertained. Beginning July 8 and running through Aug. 1, performances are held Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m. Matinees are also planned during drama camp sessions. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children age 11 and younger for children’s shows. For more information, call 800-7265115 or visit snowcamptheatre.com.

Greensboro Historical Museum, Greensboro Having already spanned 150 years, we find ourselves at the Welcome to the Gate City hands on exhibit at the Greensboro Historical Museum. This permanent exhibit allows your family to experience firsthand typical duties of a turn-of-thecentury druggist, firefighter and more in a life-sized, working “set” of Greensboro. Featured as a permanent exhibit at the Greensboro Historical Museum, located at 130 Summit Ave. Stroll through the streets, take in a silent movie and relive Greensboro’s emerging city life as it was opened to the rest of the country thanks to the railroad system that wove prosperity and connectivity through the burgeoning

cities of a proud young country. The museum is part of a campus that includes the David and Rachel Caldwell Historical Center and the First Presbyterian Cemetery. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information on exhibits and events, call 373-2043 or visit their website at GreensboroHistory.org.

The Mill House Museum, Cooleemee The Mill House Museum stills time in 1934, during a simple era in which a mill hand paid $.25 a week for a room in a multigenerational home. Salt cured meats and canned vegetables were staples for the mill townspeople. The museum is a restored Erwin Mills home built in 1934. While the home was modest, families were big. In a close-knit community like Erwin Mills, children who acted out could be reprimanded by not only their parents and grandparents, but also any of the neighbors. As you take in the simplistic lifestyle, leave the smartphones and tablets behind and watch as your children imagine what chores they might take on in 1930s Davie County. Would they feed the chickens? Gather eggs? Bring in coal? Chop wood? The museum is located at 163 Cross St. in Cooleemee. For more information, call 284-6040.

North Carolina’s agricultural landscape experienced post war prosperity followed by Depression-era dearth in the first half of the 20th century. Small, family operated farms were the norm. The Hoover House at Linbrook Heritage Estate, nestled in the northwestern corner of Randolph County, sweeps visitors back to those tumultuous years of rural farm living from 1905 to 1944. Built by current-owner Jerry Neal’s great grandfather and restored to its original condition, the venue offers glimpses into the sometimes difficult but oft-rewarding lives farmers lived a century ago. Guided tours of the Hoover House, located at 5502 Snyder Country Road, Trinity, are provided by appointment only. Admission is $3 for children under 12 and $5 for adults. Neal’s Industrial and Agricultural Museum is located on the estate as well at 5507 Snyder Country Road. The museum boasts fully restored period farm equipment, a sawmill, a sugar cane mill, agricultural demonstrations and a gift shop. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with group tours scheduled by appointment. Admission is $3 for children under 12 and $5 for adults. Six Unique Places to Visit in the Triad The Triad area offers families all they need for a happy and healthy life day to day, but when your family needs something out of the ordinary routine, try one of these unique destinations.

1

BY JAN CAMPBELL WHARTON

All-a-Flutter Butterfly Farm 7850-B Clinard Farms Road, High Point 454-5651 all-a-flutter.com All-a-Flutter raises thousands of monarch butterflies each year to sell to businesses and individuals for release on special occasions such as weddings and graduations. They also work to teach people about the plight of the butterfly and the importance of saving natural habitats and respecting nature. The butterfly farm allows visitors to experience firsthand all stages of the monarch’s lifecycle from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis. Participants can also hand-feed the monarchs to get an up-close look. Family tours are held each Saturday at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., weather-permitting. The farm is closed in the winter. Admission is first-come, first-served starting April 15. Group tours are available during the week by appointment.

Black Mountain Chocolate Company Factory 732 N. Trade St., WinstonSalem 293-4698 blackmountainchocolate.com The only part of the artisan chocolate-making process Black Mountain Chocolate (BMC) doesn’t do themselves is grow and ferment the cocoa beans. Cocoa trees only grow in tropical lands near the equator, so BMC buys select beans from these locales. The beans arrive at the downtown Winston-Salem factory in 70 kg bags, where they are sorted and roasted — and that’s just the beginning. The factory is open Tuesday through Sunday, and all stages of the chocolate-making process are visible though glass windows. The cafe portion of the factory sells all BMC products, along with pastries, gelato and drinks inspired by their chocolates and the tastes of other local, small batch artisans. Children will enjoy the hot sipping

chocolate, which is served with a homemade marshmallow. The factory also offers guided tours every other Saturday that give a behind-the-scenes view of the entire chocolate-creation process from bean to bar. Tours last one hour ($10 plus tax and fees) and include a guided tasting of artisan chocolates. Reservations are recommended, as tour numbers are limited.

Conservators Center 676 E. Hughes Mill Road, Burlington 888-650-1139 conservatorscenter.org If your kids love animals, don’t miss the Conservators Center in Burlington. Nearly 90 exotic animals representing more than 20 species have been rescued and brought to the center or bred here as part of a coordinated propagation program. During tours of the center, guides introduce each animal and give their individual stories along with a description

6 of the species. Hear the earthrumbling roar of entire prides of lions calling in unison and get an up-close look at tigers, wolves, lemurs, binturongs and other exotic species. Tours of the 10-acre center are given each Saturday and Sunday by appointment only, and group tours are available during the week. The center offers various programs based on age of participants. Tours require a walk along a quarter-mile gravel path (not conducive to strollers) and range from 45 minutes to 2 hours. A golf cart is available for mobility-impaired visitors.

2 Gateway Gardens

Körner’s Folly

2924 E. Lee St., Greensboro 373-2199 greensborobeautiful.org Greensboro Beautiful has worked to conserve and enhance the beauty and ecology of Greensboro since 1968 through donations, volunteers and a collaboration with the city of Greensboro. Gateway Gardens, located at one of the city’s major entryways, represents the biggest project ever undertaken by the group. Children will enjoy the playful and interactive Michel Family Children’s Garden where they can saunter through an archway made from giant carrots or watch the sun glint through a giant glass butterfly. Greensboro Beautiful also maintains The Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden, The Greensboro Arboretum and the Bog Garden at Benjamin Parkway. All gardens are open year-round from sunrise to sunset. Admission is free. See website for additional information.

413 S. Main St., Kernersville 996-7922 kornersfolly.org By design, Körner’s Folly is like no other house in the world. Jule Gilmer Körner built it in 1878 to showcase his furniture and interior design work to his clients. He officially dubbed it Körner’s Folly after hearing that when one of his neighbors saw the house, he commented, “That will surely be Jule Körner’s folly.” More of a marvel than a folly, no two door ways or windows of the 22-room house are exactly alike, and ceiling heights range from five-and-a-half to 25 feet. See the elaborate murals Jules painted on many walls and ceilings and the whimsical plaster and carved wood details he added throughout the house. Children will enjoy exploring the child-size rooms, hidden nooks and trap doors. Tours are self-guided.

5 Uptown Lexington 114 E. Center St., Lexington 866-604-2389 visitlexingtonnc.com Main Street USA is alive and well in the Triad, and nowhere is it more charming than Uptown Lexington. Chicago has painted cows. Lexington, the self-proclaimed BBQ capital of the world, has painted pigs. And, along with information and maps, the Lexington Visitors Center offers a list of all of them. While you’re searching for the pigs, be sure to drop into Lanier Hardware (218 S. Main), which Ardell Lanier bought from his brother-in-law in 1940. This store has everything a regular hardware store would offer along with sporting goods, cake decorating supplies, equestrian tack, electric train cars and much more. Mr. Lanier’s long running slogan was, “If we don’t have it, and we can’t get it, you don’t need it.” Just across

Center Street under a red and white striped awning, you’ll find The Candy Shop (15 N. Main), which carries hundreds of old-fashioned candy favorites and store-made fudge. Don’t miss grabbing a pint of pimento cheese at the Conrad and Hinkle Food Market (6 N. Main) along the way. And to wash it all down, stop by the old-fashioned soda fountain at Lexington Drug Company (405 E. Center St.).

GO FAR GOFARCLUB.ORG GO FAR, which stands for Go Out for a Run, is an 8- to 10-week comprehensive fitness program designed to teach children of all abilities about healthy eating, goal setting and how to train for a 5K. GO FAR was created in an attempt to fight the childhood obesity epidemic while teaching kids that active lifestyles can be sustained throughout their lives. The organization puts on two 5K and Fun Run events a year in High Point, one in the spring and one in the fall. Training for the event takes place in schools and after-school programs, but the event is open to everyone. Kids who don’t belong to a club can register at the race and their families are encouraged to join them.

LILLIE’S FRIENDS 5K & FAMILY FESTIVAL

PARTNERSHIPFORCHILDREN.ORG

The Lillie’s Friends Foundation was started by Cory and Michelle Boyte, who lost their daughter Lillie, 3, to neuroblastoma, an extremely aggressive childhood cancer, in 2007. Lillie’s Friends donates 100 percent of the proceeds to innovative research and has helped many local families with financial assistance. Another way Lillie’s Friends gives back is by providing a monthly dinner and bingo night to the kids and families on the oncology ward at Brenner Children’s Hospital. In addition to a 5K run/walk, the event — traditionally held around Easter at BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem — features an egg hunt with 10,000 eggs, all containing prizes. The event also includes face painting, inflatables, games, crafts, raffles and live entertainment.

What makes the Glow Run different? You run in the dark! Participants are encouraged to wear reflective clothing or accessories. The event is held in the spring and hosted by Smart Start of Davidson County. The 2015 race started at the Lexington Fairgrounds. Pre-run activities included a warm up session of Glowin-the-Dark Zumba. Proceeds will go to Reach out and Read and other Smart Start funded programs for children and families in Davidson County.

RUN LEO STLEOCATHOLIC.COM Having celebrated its 20th year in 2015, the annual Run Leo Road Race and Fun Run is one of the oldest races in the Triad. It is traditionally held in early spring and starts from St. Leo’s Catholic School in Winston-Salem. Participants choose between a 5K, 10K and Fun Run. The USATF certified 5K and 10K courses wind through the beautiful neighborhood of Buena Vista, while the one-mile Fun Run provides a family-friendly shorter route. All proceeds generated from the event fund St. Leo’s children’s programs. The school also hosts a Warm Up Fun Run and pasta dinner the night before the race.

TUXEDO TROT: RUN FOR THE PENGUINS TUXEDOTROT.COM The race coincides each year with World Penguin Day and was created by the Greensboro Science Center’s Conservation Committee to raise funds for endangered African penguins. 100 percent of the profits from the race is donated to the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds. The Tuxedo Trot consists of a 5K and Kids’ Fun Run. Both events begin and end at the Greensboro Science Center. The 5K takes runners along a two-loop course on Lawndale Drive (closed to traffic) and through Country Park. The Kids’ Fun Run is a short course through Animal Discovery Zoo. The course includes “Waddle Zones” and other fun diversions.
