GREENSBORO Location: Established in 1808, Greensboro is the largest city in the Piedmont Triad and the third-largest in the state. The county seat of Guilford County, Greensboro’s proximity to Piedmont Triad International Airport, interstates I-40 and I-85, and U.S. 29, make it easily accessible from all areas of the Triad. Population: 277,080 Points of Interest: The International Civil Rights Center and Museum opened its doors in 2010 and is a memorial to the Greensboro Four who famously staged the 1960 sit-in at the Woolworth’s lunch counter and ignited the Civil Rights Movement. Greensboro is also the home base for the Greensboro Grasshoppers, a South Atlantic League baseball team, and the Carolina Dynamo soccer league. The Wyndham Championship (formerly the Greater Greensboro Open), one of the oldest national PGA Tour golf tournaments, is held every year in Greensboro, and the city has hosted the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) basketball tournament for many years. The city also has an active and diverse arts community. Events and venues range from the nationally acclaimed annual Eastern Music Festival to Weatherspoon Art Museum, to the cutting-edge performances of the professional Triad Stage theater company.

In 1913, the two towns became one. Population: 234,349 Points of Interest: Old Salem historic district showcases the culture of the Moravian settlement in North Carolina during the 18th and 19th centuries, re-creating shops, churches and houses. EDUCATION | public & magnet schools Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools

wsfcs.k12.nc.us Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Administrative Offices 475 Corporate Square Drive, Winston-Salem 727-2816 Superintendent: Dr. Beverly Emory Forsyth County has the fifth-largest system in North Carolina and the 83rd-largest in the nation. What makes the school system unique is that parents have a say in where their children go to school. Elementary and middle schools are divided into zones, and families can choose from among the schools in their residential schools each spring during the Schools of Choice process. Parents can choose from their neighborhood schools, another school in their zones or from 15 magnet programs (two magnet schools are by random drawing). High-school students can earn college credit in more than 30 Advanced Placement courses, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and courses at local colleges and universities. The school system has 42 elementary schools, 15 middle schools and 11 high schools. Twelve special schools bring the system-wide total to 80 and serving about 52,400 students. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools offers 17 magnet schools in grades K-12. Each magnet school offers a challenging curriculum and the support that students need to expand their horizons. Students have the opportunity to continue in a magnet program from kindergarten through grade 12. The following schools

EDUCATION | charter schools Charter schools provide parents a choice in the education of their children — and it is a public choice. Charter schools are tuition-free; funding comes from federal, state and local taxes. Charter schools are governed by either a board of parents and community members or a private educational-services firm. The schools have open enrollment with no discrimination or religious associations. To enroll in a charter school, parents must contact each individual school to see if it has openings. If they have more applicants than available slots, an open lottery must be instituted to fill the remaining spots. Charter schools have several flexible opportunities in their dayto-day operations that do not exist with traditional schools; for example, hiring noncertified teachers, hiring teaching personnel on at-will contracts and negotiating personnel salaries. The state requires 75 percent of charter school teachers in elementary school to be certified, while 50 percent in middle and high school must be certified. However, charter school teachers must follow NCLB requirements for highly qualified staff. All charter schools are required to take the state-mandated tests. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Charter School Office oversees charter schools across the state. For more information: North Carolina Department of Public Instruction

home schooling | EDUCATION According to North Carolina law, a home school is defined as “a nonpublic school in which the student receives academic instruction from his/her parent, legal guardian or a member of the household in which the student resides.” Two household schools are permitted. Parents who plan to educate their children at home must notify the Division of NonPublic Education. The following are state requirements for parents/guardians residing in North Carolina and desiring to home school their children who are at least age 7 but not yet 16 in lieu of conventional schooling. Requirements Parents/guardians residing in North Carolina and desiring, in lieu of conventional school attendance, to home school their children who are at least age 7 but not yet age 16 must: Hold at least a high-school diploma or its equivalent. Send to DNPE a Notice of Intent to Operate a Home School. The notice must include the name and address of the

school along with the name of the school’s owner and chief administrator. Elect to operate under either Part 1 or Part 2 of Article 39 of the North Carolina General Statutes as a religious or as a nonreligious school. Operate the school “on a regular schedule, excluding reasonable holidays and vacations, during at least nine calendar months of the year.” Maintain at the school disease immunization and annual attendance records for each student. Have a nationally standardized achievement test administered annually to each student. The test must involve English grammar, reading, spelling and mathematics. Records of the test results must be retained at the home school for at least one year and made available to DNPE when requested. Notify DNPE when the school is no longer in operation. Recommendations While not mandated by

law, home schools are encouraged to: • Offer instruction of at least similar quality, scope and duration as local conventional schools. • Maintain at least five hours of instruction with the student(s) each school day. • Conduct instruction each school year for 180 days. • Maintain a current daily log, journal or lesson plan book throughout the entire school year detailing time period for each subject each day and information covered during the specified time period. • Retain records at your school until the student has enrolled in a conventional school or has graduated. • Administer and score a nationally standardized testing each year during the same week of your choice between March 1 and April 15 by someone not living in the same household as the student.
