We would like to thank everyone who helped to bring back the annual Harvest Festival this past September—coupled with Movies in the Park things almost felt normal. It was great to see people socializing (in person) again! The City is diving headfirst into the community engagement and design process for the new Community Pool. We hope you can join us for the two remaining workshops on November 16th and December 14th! PRD Staff has been hard at work planning amazing classes, programs and events for the community to enjoy this winter/spring! We are especially excited for our new Adaptive Programming (p. 33), Try It Out Mondays (p. 24), Play Like a Girl+ Event (p. 25) and the return of our annual Bunny Blast (inside back cover)! Bring on Spring!

Help maintain our public fields in Piedmont. Make your donation go twice as far with a matching funds donation opportunity With all the challenges from the pandemic, we have been the beneficiary of our well-maintained, lovely outdoor spaces that have allowed us as a community to spend time together. Our precious public spaces are more important than ever. Make your donation go twice as far, and create a lasting legacy by donating to the Piedmont Beautification Foundation’s Sport Fields Endowment Fund. Your donation will be matched by John Bates, Jr. and Charles Bates, in loving memory of their sister Katy Bates Kreitler. The endowment will generate income to be used exclusively for the maintenance and preservation of the public fields and courts in Piedmont. Taekwondo
Ages 3–6
ages 5–15
Taekwondo, the ancient Korean Martial Art, over 10,000 years old, and an Olympic sport. It will help the student to learn about the philosophy, and history of Taekwondo as a martial art. It brings the person as a unit in mind, body and spirit. Through forms develops patience, concentration and attention to details. Through free sparring develops quick reflexes and humility. Through meditation develops inner awareness and confidence. All these aspects teach a person: self-confidence, self-discipline, self-control, self-defense, self-respect and respect to others. Bring a water bottle and running shoes.

Chibi (little) Judo helps children grow in wonderful ways. As we jump, run and roll, we develop balance, coordination and confidence. And we have fun! We start out learning our names in Japanese then do movement exercises, tumbling and some simple judo techniques that teach us to fall safely. We place a strong emphasis on culture so everyone plays games, sing songs and speaks the language of Japan. We learn to “nete” (lie down) and to “tonde “ (leap) like a “raion” (lion). In our positive learning environment we bow politely to Sensei (teacher) and to one another. At Hanabi, respect comes as naturally as smiling. Participants will need to have a judo gi. We can supply them for $85 (plus tax). Thur Thur Thur

Hajime! (Begin!) establishes a strong base of judo technique, culture, and character. Fun tumbling, jumping and running warm us up before we practice falling techniques: Hajime students learn to fall safely, effortlessly and without discomfort. Judo allows a smaller person to control a bigger opponent. We learn to hold a person down with “kesa-gatame” (scarf hold) and we practice throws—where our opponent can be flipped upside down on Sensei. Class finishes with games that develop physical coordination, balance and laughter. We sing in Japanese about inspiration and bow to each other respectfully. Respect and discipline are as much a part of Hanabi as smiling. Participants will need to have a judo gi. We can supply them for $85 (plus tax). Thur Thur Thur

Nancy Henderson, Adapted Physical Education Specialist, has been teaching children with special needs in both public schools and the private sector for four decades. She considers her life’s work to be creating learning environments that foster active participation and a sense of belonging for all. Nancy grew up in a musical family and feels fortunate to have been encouraged to tap into her own creativity from an early age. Nancy is magical in her approach to uncover the hidden talents of young people and discover community through exploration of dance, rhythm, creative expression, and physical activity. “Each one, teach one” serves as a guiding principle for Nancy as she seeks to engage people of varying ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds in activities that further individual development as well as group connection. Check out her “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” classes!
Sidekicks: Adaptive Programming Because Every Super Hero Needs a Sidekick! The Piedmont Recreation Department (PRD) is committed to meet the needs of the community by creating safe, fun and affordable inclusive programs for school-aged kids with neurodiverse needs. While our school year classes are specially designed to address various special needs, during summer, our goal is to integrate children into our mainstream camps. Our Teen Sidekicks will be paired with campers to help them build relationships and strengthen their recreational skills while having a blast!
Summer Camp Sidekicks Beginning Summer 2022, PRD will offer Summer Camp Sidekicks. This program pairs Teen Sidekicks with each camper and together they explore, learn and play at camp while creating a lasting relationship. Campers can choose any PRD camp they would like—a complete list of camps will be listed in the Summer Activity Guide. For more information contact Eva Phalen at ephalen@piedmont.ca.gov.
Shake, Rattle & Roll PRD has created an after-school enrichment program called Shake, Rattle & Roll. Classes are taught by Nancy Henderson, retired Albany Unified School District Adaptive P.E.. Heather Morrison has filled hundreds of journals with her personal stories since she started writing as a kid. She holds a degree in English Literature, studied TV and screenwriting, and has written and directed several award-winning short films. In 2019, she completed a 50,000 word novella in 30 days (during NaNoWriMo). Last year, Heather began helping clients write their personal stories about living through the pandemic. Her clients reported that they found their voices and even started other writing projects—while finalizing their memoirs. Heather was inspired to expand into coaching groups. Heather believes writing in a community has so many benefits: mutual support, different perspectives, and new insights—plus it’s a lot of fun! Piedmont Seniors Group seniors A bit of “Joie de Vivre” for Piedmont seniors— especially senior singles— but couples and older “baby boomers” are also encouraged to join. We welcome you to join us as we cultivate new friendships, provide guest speakers, and plan enjoyable excursions such as theaters, museums, restaurants, historical places, and more. Our goal is to strengthen the social and emotional well-being of seniors, as well as promote the pursuit of intellectual development. Please join us for refreshments at our next friendly and informal Wednesday gathering! Usually 4th Wednesday of the month

Instructor: Janet Epstein, PRD Staff Location: Piedmont Community Hall
Seniors Meet-ups PRD is creating community through our new Senior Meet-up Groups. A meet-up is simply that—a group people that meet up to enjoy a common interest. Send your creative meet-up ideas to Recreation Supervisor, Eva Phalen, ephalen@piedmont.ca.gov
