CONNECTING with NATURE through SERVICE

Working at Frontier Park has been nothing but a wonderful experience for me. Well, maybe theweek of18-degreeweatherand another week of rain could have gone be tter, but in all seriousness, I have learned a lot and feel the impact of our trail work the most from this project.

Over a decade ago, I used to consider Frontier my stomping ground as I practiced cross country or “trained” (i.e., mostly just goofed off) every day for two summers in a row with my friends. To see the park ge tting some love and being utilized to this day is absolutely amazing.

Our biggest project is building a board walk and a trail to a new addition to the park that never existed when I was a kid. Building this boardwalk has allowed me to get more comfortable with power tools and has taught me a lot of basic carpen try.Through naturewalks, I have learned to identify more native plants than ever befo re and have learned how to pick out sickly trees. It is sad to see that some of my old haunts have fallen ill to laminated root rot, but now that we have identified it, we can plant trees that are resistant to the disease. That way, the park can still be used by re sidents the same way I used it when I lived close by.

Alicia Netter provides a glimpse of her ex perience as a Washington Service Corps. member for the Pierce County Parks Natu ralLandsCrewduringthe2021-22season. Netter and her five other crew members helped construct a 140-foot-long board walk along multiuse trail in Frontier Park.

With more than 5,000 acres of forests, prairies, streams, shorelines, and parks, Pierce County Parks has a lot of ground to cover. Year-round, the Natural Lands Crew wor ks hard to maintain the natural flora and fauna in our parks in addition to helping create safe, accessible areas for the public to enjoy.

With so much land to steward ranging from the Key Peninsula to the foothills of Mount Rainier, each year from October to August, extra help is provided in partnership with the Washington Service Corps (WSC). A six-member service crew joins the Natural Lands Crew to gain professional experien ce and training in a potential career path in parks.

projects like trail building and habitat res toration,” said Jessica Stone, Natural Lands Steward for Pierce County Parks. “So much of this requires flexibility and ability to adapt to changing needs, site conditions, and timelines. It’s a cost and time efficient way to make our parks a better place for public and wildlife use.”

To help set the WSC service members up for a successful season, they’re provided on-the-job training, like how to safely use tools or wilderness first aid. Working alon side professional Parks staff, the service members gain training in other areas too, such as ecosystem assessments, critical area and wetland delineation, and surve ying.

“I am really enjoying learning how to analyze trees to understand where to and how to safely remove them with a chain saw,” said 2021-22 season WSC service member, Nicholas Gabbamonte. “This skill has allowed us to clear overgrown areas for visual safety guidelines and to create new trails for our communities to benefit from. Not only it is useful to know, but I am ha ving a blast doing so.”

“Through WSC we have a trained and de ployable team that can tackle complicated

Environmental education is also a big part to the service. Crew members learn about plant identification and about the negati ve impacts invasive species can have on native plant growth and wildlife habitat. All that knowledge and experience gained throughout their service becomes a key tool in volunteer and community events. WSC members are able to help connect the community to Pierce County’s natural areas while also teaching others how to be stewards of the environment.

“Working at FRONTIER PARK has been nothing but a WONDERFUL experience for me. ”

FALL 2022 | EQ | WWW.PIERCECOUNTYWA.GOV/PARKS FEATURE STORY 13

This service opportunity is a gateway to understanding how parks departments maintain and create spaces for communities to bene fit from. Much of the work accomplished can be visibly validating, from seeing the change in scenery after clearing out ivy vines to building something new to enhance the public’s experience along a trail. Most importantly, service members experience moments of personal growth.

“Looking back, I always thought equipment like toters and chain saws had to be complicated and scary, but they’re a lot more sim ple than child-me anticipated,” reflected Kelsey Mead, a 2021-22 WSC service member. “Getting to learn different kinds of tools makes me feel more empowered and independent. It also makes me want to start my own projects at home and feel confident that I can complete them.”

The 2021-22 season ends this August for the six-member crew, who accomplished a lot during their 11-month service. A huge thank you to Alicia Netter, Devan Allen, Harrison Pettit, Kelsey Mead, Nicholas Gabbamonte, and Paris Hoffman. Below are a few accomplishments to highlight from this season:

• The crew made incredible improvements to Seeley Lake Park in Lakewood, where they cleared seven acres of blackberry and replanted the area with low growing natives to provide safe public access.

• At Frontier Park in Graham, they constructed 1,500 feet of trail and 160 feet of boardwalk through the woods.

• And before their service ends, they’re currently building 2,000 feet of trail through the cedar forest at Meridian Habitat Park in South Hill.

Because of this crew’s hard work, Pierce County can now enjoy beautiful trails in public areas that were previously inaccessible.

“Being able to teach and train our crew members is a huge hi ghlight of my position,” said Ben Monte Calvo, Natural Lands Park Specialist. “As the service year goes on, I get to see each member learn new skills, develop new interests and be more connected to the natural world. We’ve had crew members become interested in becoming biologists, park rangers, trail crew leaders just to name a few. It’s really fulfilling and always keeps me on my toes.”

In October a new six-member crew starts. They will focus on upco ming projects like trail construction at Cross Park and Orangegate Park, prairie restoration at Parkland Prairie Nature Preserve, handson forestry work at Buckley Forestland and more. With a new crew means new professional trainings are in store as well as a discovery for how to appreciate and connect with nature.
