STANDING THE TEST OF TIME as our fratern ity approaches it's centennial , it's important to note that our future is faithfu lly rooted by the actions of those who preceded us . by MAR K E. TIMM ES , CEO

â&#x20AC;˘ was 1944, and World War II engaged the nation's attention, and its youth.

The Alpha Sigma Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi (Tennessee) remained one of the few chapters still active on campus. ~1any others had folded. Conditions \vere worsening, but this chapter was at least still able to keep its house and serve meals. Several other fraternities even carne to the Pi Kappa Phi house for meals. The Alpha Theta Chapter at Michigan State (left with only tl1ree members) sold its house, paid its debts, and purchased war bonds with the remaining funds. Some Pi Kappa Ph i chapters found their houses occupied by aval Preparatory Schools, while others found themselves haring thei r property with the other fraternities on carnpu . At Oregon State, where the Amly had taken over much of the can1pus housing, the Alpha Zeta Chapter house se!Ved as an overflow for women' dormitories. The Star & l.i:lmp changed slowly from collegiate and alumni news to a sort of forum, publishing stories of heroi m and brotherhood in comba~ letters to and from soldiers fighting in the war, and li t upon li t of brothers serving in the military, lost in combat, or missing. Few male tudents remained enrolled in college, and as a result an overwhelming number of national and local fraternity chapters simply dried up during World War II. early 3000 Pi Kapps se!Ved in the military at a time when the ational Fraternity claimed less than fifty undergraduate chapters and only 40 short years of history. For Pi Kappa Phi, and for the United States, the time was bleak and uncertain. But just a few years later, the nation entered a booming time of prosperity and happiness. Fraternities enjoyed a rebirth, chapters grew and flourished again, and all seemed right. Pi Kappa Phi had weathered the torm of war. Today, nearly 60 years later, Pi Kappa Phi comprises almost 130 active chapters, 6000 undergraduate members, and a future filled with promise. It ranks near the top anwng its interfraternal peers in every major emphasis, from recruitment to service to leadership programming. But while the 1950's and early 196o's were prosperous, the following 15 years would present the entire fraternity world with an even more looming threats. Sweeping societal changes and Vietnam protests defined the university culture throughout the late 1960's and early 1970's, having a di re effect on fraternity life. Eleven national fraternities folded during thi period. Pi Kappa Phi fought through an uncertain time with creative tactics; some were a product of the times (a new logo was crafted, the three Greek letters molded into a peace sign), while others became lasting staples of the fraternity (Pi Kappa Phi's very own national service project, Push America). During these tumultuous years, the fraternity watched the world, planned carefully, and emerged in the 1980's as "America's Fastest Gro\~ing Fraternity" It's number of chapters had more than doubled. Creatively, Pi Kappa Phi has become the envy of the Interfraternity world. It is the first fraternity to hare developed its very own hands-on service organization for its membership, and for it' innovative leadership programs. And the "journey of Pi Kappa Phi" has seiVed as a model for many national fraternities in development of their own four-year membership development program . More than 80,000 men-among them Pulitzer Prize winners, Emmy Award winners, professional baseball Hall-of-Famers and All-Stars, U.S. and State Senators and Representatives, Governors, Mayors, Astronauts, and Generals-have gone through the fraternity's Ritual of Initiation. Expansion:

What do three Big Tens, an 1vy, and New Mexico all have in common? 1n one wordExpansion. This fall saw the opening of chapters at two Big Ten campusesUniversity of Iowa and Michigan State University. 1n addition, a new chapter was recolonized at an Ivy League campus, Cornell University. For the first time a chapter was established at the University of ew Mexico. To capitalize on this momentum, this winter, tl1e National Fraternity was proud and excited to recolonize to another Big Ten can1pus, the University of Illinois. After almost a two-year absence from tl1e Illinois campus, a five-week intensive expansion project was undettaken by Leadership Consultants Todd Cox, Eta Tau (Kentucky); Nathan Holic, Eta Psi (Central Florida); and Brandon Thdor, Eta Upsilon (Miami). 'l11e three-man team used a variety of recmitment techniques but primarily relied upon a referral-based strategy. This strategy proved successful as the team enlisted 35 high-quality ~1en of CLASS to take up tl1e charge of building tl1e new Upsilon Chapter. These 35 men, along witl1 others they recrui~ will function as an associate chapter until they have completed the necessary requirements to be granted a charter. 路路1 wasn't planning on joining a fraternity, but 1had tllis opportunity to help build one and to bring back a chapter. I couldn't pass it up," said Paul ~1artin, one of tile new members of tl1e Upsilon Associate Chapter. Ne.xt academic year's e.>..'Pansion locations are still in the process of being finalized. The National Fraternity is elated to announce that this fall the Beta Epsilon Chapter at tl1e University of Missouri will be reopened. Planning i still in tl1e early stages. This past fall, two associate chapters met all the requirements to receive its charter from tl1e national organization. On November 15th, the Pi Kappa Phi flag was pennanently planted in our nation's capital at The George Washington University. During the course of the weekend, 40 men were initiated into the Fraternity and the associate chapter was installed as the Theta Zeta Chapter, the !98th chartered chapter of tl1e Fraternity. The TM chapter was honored to have E..\ecutive Director Emeritu Durward Owen. Xi (Roanoke) officiate over the ceremonies as tl1e Chartering Officer.. On ovember 22"'\ the associate chapter at St. john 路s Cniversity in Queen , t-;ew York finally was granted approval to receive its charter. This chartering can1e witl1 a twist. The Alpha Xi (Brookl)'1l Polytechnic) Alumni Chapter, has continued to operate in pite of its undergraduate chapter closing some time ago, and agreed to install the St. John's Chapter under tl1eir designation. This represents the first time that a chapter designation has been transferred from one institution to another and al o begins a new and unique relation hip between the undergraduate and alumni chapter.:.. The name Push

At the organization's inception in 1977, the letters P.U .S.H stood for Play Units for the Severely Handicapped . The men of Pi Kappa Phi constructed large play units in facilities that allowed people with disabilities to participate in "therapeutic play." Seeing a decline in the use of play units, the organization changed the acronym in 1988 to People Understanding the Severely Handicapped . This was also the time where many of the current national projects were introduced, including what are now known as Give-a-Push Weekends and the Journey of Hope. Another modification followed in 1992 when the acronym P.U.S.H. was dropped for a variety of reasons . The organization chose PUSH America to represent a more nationa l name and reflect the national scope of its projects and programs. The term "handicapped " was no longer politically correct and the organization was often confused with Jesse Jackson 's Operation PUSH . The final change came in 1997 when the all capital izat ion of PUSH was abandoned and the name became simply Push America . A change to the Push America logo in the summer of 2002 reflects that adjustment. Although the actual letters of the Push America may not stand for something in particular, the name as a whole symbolizes Pi Kappa Phi 's commitment to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities, as well as driving advocacy and awareness on their behalf. Push America has been a successful experiment in Fraternity. After 25 years and raising $8 mill ion dollars in support of the projects and programs of Push America, Pi Kappa Phi has proven itself as America 's Lead ing Fraternity in the realm of service learning, and has also favorably impacted countless lives of those external to the Fratern ity ..O..

The second hand on the time piece that is within eyeshot, perhaps on your wrist or on the wall or on the desk in front of you, moves to ri ght, shuttling moments, seconds of time into the abyss of what we call, "the past". Time issuch apoweJful, if not a seeminglyinvisible tl1ing in our culture. Time in and of itself seems to have its own lexicon. Consider tllese words, mentioned so casually in eve1yday speech, but heavy witl1meaning when attached to memories or commands: yesterday, todct)l, tomorrow, then, now, and when. Latm; yet, fast, stall, drag, and past. These words seem to take us up and down the linear existence that we know of time. Despite the fact tl1at we never seem to have enoughofit, tilemost impOitant tllingabout time is what we associate with or attach to it. Witll tl1epassage oftimecomes asense ofpel' manence, strengtl1, and wisdomand these are tl1ings we find in Pi Kappa Phi. Do we not find in our founders - Brothers Fogarty, Kroeg, and Mixson-a certain strength ? We re we not taught in member education that our big brother, or maybe the seniors in

tened to because they po wisdom? Moreover, do we not derive a sense permanence fr m ou r m mbership in an organization that is now about tocelebrate its centennial anniversary? Finally, what totem toour Pi Kappa Phi history markthe passage of time? To help unwrap this even further, we hear from ~Ul alumnu and how the passage of time has affected hi h art for Pi Kappa I hi.

Greg Elam Beta (Presbyterian College) Brother Greg Elam, a former National Headquarters Staff member (i ncluding interim Executive Secretary from 1957- 1958) , now lives in Dallas, Texas and currentlyserves as the Senior Vice President for Communication with the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau. For Brother Elan1, time in Pi Kappa Phi now spans over 50 years and hi heart is still intimatelytied to the fraterni ty he loves. One of his favorite Pi Kappa Phi memories came as a youngchapter officer representing Beta Chapter at the 24th Supreme Chapter in 1952 in Mian1i, Florida. It was a great experience for Elam because hediscovered Pi Kappa Phi on a trulynational level for U1e fi rst time. Like thestud nts and alumni who hadcome before him, he now was tapping into what made Pi Kappa Phi a fratemity that transcended its Southern roots. And also, for some unexplained reason, Alpha Chapter was unable to make tl1e convention, which put him as the first delegate to the entire convention. "With Alpha's absence, the Beta Chapter delegate was first in line," recalls Elam. "It was a unique opportunityfor me because Iwas able to befriend [founder] L. Harry Mixson. We spent a great deal of time talking and Iwas luckyto have been afforded so many moments with a man who was o important to Pi Kappa Phi." 1\vo years later Elam found himself again interactingwitl1 prominent Pi Kappa Phi's like founders Mixson and Fogarty. The 25tl' Supreme Chapter in 1954 was at our proverbial home- Charleston, South Carolina and U1i time it was our 50tl' anniversary. ' "l had never been on [College of Charleston] campus before," remembers El an1. "l was surrounded by ' the mystique and aura of hi tory, specifically, our hi tory." The 50th Anniversary was a special moment and tuming point for Pi Kappa Phi. Emerging from the difficult years of World War II when fraternities were on a decline due to the shortage of 6.. men on campuses, and the Korean War with an armistice barely a year old, Pi Kappa Phi was ~ beginning to realize thestrength that hadcarried it tl1rough the lean years to forge a sense 6... of permanence on manycampuses across the nation. ~ Accordingto Elan1, all fraternities struggled duringthese times. However, when ' '54 came around there was a tremendous sense of energy in the atmosphere for fraternity life. ~ "It was toward the end of the GI Bill era and students who were too ~ young to have erved in the preceding confl icts were now beginning to fill the chapter ranks," says Elam. "lt was a reallyexciting time." ...... When asked about the strength and wisdom that he now sees in Pi ~ Kappa Phi with over fifty years perspective, Elam responds by saying, "Our strength is in our volunteers who have stepped up in times of . . . need. For example, the ational Council and alumni at the chapter level were instrumental during the war years as they kept the organization afloat. We had very little turn over duringthat decade. In part, this made it possible for us to experience the growth we did under the Durward [Owen] era." El am goes on to say that Pi Kappa Phi has made con cience decisions over tl1e years tocreate our own path and not to follow otl1er fraternities' fornlllla fo r success. We also exist in a fraternity tl1at serves its membership well. As for wisdom, Elam concludes, "Wisdom for Pi Kappa Phi means committingtosomethingbiggerthan we are individually. just lookat what has been accomplished through the creation of Pi Kapp College and Push America." l11e 25tl' Supreme Chapterwas a significant moment for Pi Kappa Phi. l11egift to thecollege thatyear-aclock tosit atop Randolph Hall -wouldserve as a marker to what Pi Kappa Phi had accompli hed in its first half century. It would also begin to record the time until which brothers would reconvene in Charleston for tl1e seventy-fi fth anniversary. It continues to thisday recording the passing minutes until U1e 49'h Supreme Chapter, where in August 2004, we erect another totem to commemorate the past, shift our gaze toward tomorrow, and continue realize the wisdom, strength, and permanence of our beloved Pi Kappa Phi. e as Tony Stewart's Director of 路c Relations is often hectic. ASCAR's defending Winston champion, racing bad boy, and of its most recognizable Stewart is in constant demand interviews and public appearances. Even before winning the Winston Cup, Stewart was involved in enough activities to keep any PR man busy -a spat with fans at Talladega, pushing a photographer at Indianapolis last year and the on-going, on-track feud with Jeff Gordon. For Mike Arning, the Director of Public Relations for Truth Speed Communications, Stewart's company, it's just another day at the office. "The media is right there. When something happens it tends to grow rapidly. You've got to grab the bull by the horns and think what needs to be done and you need to do it," Arning says. The 27 -year-old Arning says he adept to handle almost any situation thrown at him because of his time with Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity at Lenoir-Rhyne College (Epsilon Rho), in Hickory .C. "I've been thrown into some situations where I need to think and act on the fly. I felt like I got a realworld experience I could apply to

like, 'you're going school!'" School wasn't a problem for Aming, who agreed to go to college - if he could attend a school within a 6o-mile radiu of Charlotte, the epicenter of ASCAR. Aming settled on Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, which was also home to Hickory Motor Speedway. Soon reality set in for Aming, parking his racecardreams."Racing is expensive," he said. "There were teams spending $40, $50, $6o,OOO a year to go racing. 10 one in my family had that kind of money lying around to go racing." Arning might have given up his spot behind the wheel, but his drive to stay involved in racing remained. \'rhile at Lenoir-Rhyne he met Jason Jarrett, son of former Winston Cup champion Dalejarrett.jason, while attending school, was also running cars at Hickory Motor Speedway. Arning volunteered his services to Jarrett's sponsors, writing pres releases for the company's' website. The volunteer work paid off leading to internships with HRA and ASCAR racers, eventually landing a job with Square Das a public relations representative for Kenny Wallace. Arning'sv.wk with SquareD caught the at-

lention ofjoe Gibbs' racing team, whoAmingtl1en went to work for tl1e on No. 20 Home Depot team, (\vhere he has remainoo for the last few years). 'ow, in his capacity as Stewart'schief PR man, it's Aming's job to make sure the driver is able to keep his focu on the racetrack, the car and his next race. "You're a filter. You have to figure out what's important," Aming said explaining his role. "Tony and the No. 20 team's main focus have to be on the car on the racetrack; making sure tl1at No. 20 car can beat the other 42 cars out there." ''I'm a publicis~ a sports information director, a mooia liaison, a spokesperson, an answer man and a schoouler. l do a lot of thing<> behind the scenes besides getting Tony publicity." Just like on the track, life is a fast -paced drive for Aming, who finds himself away from his \vife and his Atlanta home 40 weeks out of the year. Aming says he puts in upwards of 75 hours a week, working out of his home, coordinating appearances and events, before flying out Thursday to the race site. "I have a passion for motor sports," Aming admits. "You have to put in 6o-to-75 hours a week. There's a lot of travel and you 're away from home a lot. But, I'm luck)' to be immersed in the sport I love so much."!.l

FR_OM THE CHAIR-MAN Dear Brothers and Friends of Pi Kappa Phi , The Pi Kappa Phi experience continues to enrich the lives of collegiate men by promoting values of brotherhood , leadership, community service and education . We also look to build new friendships and new connections for alumni members and friends of the fraternity. As members of America 's Leading Fraternity, we have the opportunity to form a bond of brotherhood which extends beyond university borders -a bond that lasts a lifetime . The Pi Kappa Phi Foundation has experienced the challenges of another year of an ever changing environment for fraternity and charitable giving. For the first time in 14 years, alumni contributions to colleges and universities declined in 2002. This 14% reduction is another example of an uncertain economy and conservative nature of charitable giving across our country. With these challenges , we continued to improve the focus ofthe Foundation to better serve the educational needs of our students, chapters and national organization . We are confident these improvements will continue to produce results in the com ingyear. In total , the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation contributed over $258,390 in grants during2002 to support the educational programs of our chapters, scholarships and leadership programming- an increase of over 20%from 2001. Even with this difficult economic climate, our Annual Appeal had its best year since 1999, with a total of $181,460, exceeding 2001 by over $22,860. This achievement can only be attributed to the ded ication of our Pi Kappa Phi members. In the pages that follow, we recognize those who have supported us this past year. You will also see special recognition of those who have reached significant Lifetime Giving plateaus as well as those 373 alumni who contributed a gift to the Foundation for the first time in 2002 . Pi Kappa Phi continues to be America 's Leading Fraternity because we offer more leading edge ed ucationa I, service and leadership opportunities than any other nationa 1 fraternity. In order for us to back up this claim , the continued support of a strong Pi Kappa Phi Foundation is necessary to provide a solid foundation on which the fraternity stands .

As we look to the future of Pi Kappa Phi and the celebration of our Centennial in 2004, I thank you for being a part of our shared vision of building better men , building leading chapters and promoting lifelong brotherhood . I ask that you continue to actively participate and support our fraternity for future members. SUMMARY OF GIFTS The Pi Kappa Phi Foundation Annual Report recognizes and thanks individuals , friends, companies and other foundations f or gifts made in support of the Foundation and its initiatives during th e past year.

The Pi Kappa Phi Foundation Annual Appeal received $181,460 in contributions between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2002, making it our most successful d irect mail campaign since 1999! This achievement marks a 13% increase from the 2001 Annual Appeal. We also welcomed over 370 new donors to our ranks this year l Please make special note ofthese names listed in blue type on the pages that follow. The future and vitality of the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation will be assured through continued financial support of the organization . As you can see from the graphs, the Annual Appeal makes up approximately 47% of the Foundation 's total income. However, it is distressing that less than 3,000 of our 65,000+ alumni around the world make a financial contribution to the Foundation . As our Centennial approaches and we seek to "reconnect" with all our alumni, we hope that they will recall their Pi Kappa Phi experience as one which has benefited them throughout their lives . Furthermore, we trust these memories will cause more alumni to repay those lifetime benefits by giving a gift to the Foundation , which will preserve the Pi Kappa Phi experience for years to come . The current level of support allows the Foundation to preserve our current initiatives . However, we must continue to grow and expand if we are to meet the cha llenges of the future for our members. Increased giving and more donors would afford the opportunity to undertake new ventures to benefit both student and alumni members. These funds can be used to provide more and expanded scholarsh ips, increase undergraduate programs and services, and expand alumni events and activities. The Foundation maintains its overall endowment through the advice and efforts of our investment managers at Merrill Lynch . As of December 31, 2002, our tota l endowment was valued at $3,581,143 with an investment allocation of 60% equities and 40%f ixed income . Li ke many investors, our portfolio suffered declines th is past year, but has still performed at acceptable levels compared to benchmarks for many other charitable foundations and corporations . As with any endowment, the principa l is invested and a portion of the earnings are used to fund the programs and activities of the Foundation . If a donation is non-designated or unrestricted , the funds can be used for immediate needs and grows annually through careful reinvestment of part of its earnings . Leadership Institute

The Foundation grants money to offset the educational costs of Pi Kappa Phi's leadersh ip schools, including Pi Kapp Co/lege, Supreme Academy at Supreme Chapter and the Mid-Year Leadership Conferences. By attending these schools, undergraduates /earn effective techniques on leadership, persona/ growth and development, motivation and organizational ski/Is.

The hallmark of our Leadership Institute features an outstanding program, Stephen R. Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

7 Habits of Highly Effective People This seminar is corporate-/eve/leadership training from the best in personal development. Conducted by Covey trained Pi Kappa Phi facilitators, this seminar gives our members an edge in an ever competitive world. Past participants have called this the "ultima te â&#x20AC;˘ in productivity and improvemen t workshops. Through program funding by the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation, students receive the same materials and training that is offered to management employees of major corporations at a fraction of the price. The program is presented annually through eight regional cone/aves.

Collegiate Success Throughout the undergraduate experience, the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation retains the services of Academic Coaches on every campus. These faculty members receive an annual stipend from the Program Foundation and work exclusively with the members of the undergraduate chapter and deliver our Academic Coaches Collegiate Success Program curriculum to chapter members. The Academic Coach serves as an advisor and mentor to the chapter, providing group and individual assistance to ensure the academic success of every student. Pi Kappa Phi is the only national co/lege fraternity to provide Academic Coaches for its undergraduate members; yet another example of why Pi Kappa Phi is America's Leading Fraternity. A dynamic career and life success seminar that helps prepare the undergraduate for life after co/lege. Designed by a Fortune 100 consultant, it is another Foundation supported program that provides a decisive advantage as our young graduates prepare to enter the "rea/ world " and th eir professiona l

career.

An exciting new Foundation funded program, STAR - "Students Talking about Alcohol and Responsibility" is a highly effective workshop which helps undergraduate members make informed and responsible choices regarding alcohol use. Following an intense half-day seminar, the STAR Program staff conducts follow-up research over a three month period, reporting results and positive change to our chapters. Sixty seven chapters received STAR training in 2002, with 100 more scheduled to participate in the program in the 2002- 2003 school year.

Volunteer Initiative Like any large organization, it takes a dedicated corps of volunteers to make things happen. Pi Kappa Phi is blessed with thousands of alumni brothers who give something back with their time and talent. Acting as advisors and mentors to our chapters, these lifelong brothers serve as Chapter Advisors, District Counselors, Regional Governors, Ambassadors and more. Through support from the Foundation, our goal is to recruit, train and support 2,004 volunteer leaders by the year 2004 - the 100th Anniversary of Pi Kappa Phi.

Chapter Investment Funds These chapter-level endowment funds, which are established through

and ma intained by the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation, encourage alumni and others to make tax-deductible contributions on behalf of their chapter. Grants are made to the chapter for approved educational uses, such as installing a computer, expanding a chapter library and offsetting costs to attend fraternity sponsored educational and leadership programs.

The Foundation provides a number of scholarships to deserving undergraduates. Several are designed specifically for associate members and to recognize those who have made significant improvement in their grade point average. Each Pi Kappa Phi scholarship is awarded for chapter, campus and commun ity leadership and involvement as we// as academic achievement, once again focus ing on our goal to create men of CLASS - Character, Leadership, Academics, Sportsmanship and Service.

Having completed their first AccessABIL!lY project this fall, the brothers of Epsilon Phi are now hard at work searching for another project in Birmingham. They are also very proud to support our brothers on the inaugural Build America team, Gear Up Florida, and the journey of Hope. The UAB Greek Awards Banquet is right around the comer, where they hope to continue the progress made over the past few years. They are a leading contender in the Intramural President's Trophy race, \\<ttich they have won for the past four years. They chapter has also had the past four Greek ~1an of the Year \\<inners, as well as dominating all NPC, 'PHC, and IFC chapters in the areas of community service hours and charitable contributions. Epsilon Phi took home nine separate awards from the last banquet. Three of the five finalists for the prestigious campus-wide ~1r. UAB Scholarship were Pi Kapps. The chapter looks fonvard

The men of the Epsilon Omega chapter at Te.xas Tech have made a trong sho\~ing in early 2003. Beginning with a trong rush class ofeightnewmembers, the Pi Kapps at Texas Tech finished in the top ten for rush in the spring. The active chapter is at a strong number of 70 men and is building to become both Texas Tech and the nation's leading fraternity. The chapter is coming off a strong fall with the initiation of 18 new active brothers. The chapter is already looking forward to the next fall rush. The major thing that the Pi Kapps at Texas Tech are looking forward to this pring is the Second Annual Texas Thmble Weed Festival. Last years event really took off with a great crowd and many great bands. This year's line up included country legends like jerry jeff Walker and ~lark David \landers. The event was held this year at Buffalo Spring; Lake in Lubbock Te.xas on April, 5 2003.

They started the year with 45 brothers, but quickly grew to 65 by initiating 20 of their 21-man Pi associate class. 'ot only did the chapter grow to the 6"' largest fraternity on campus, but tl1ey accompli bed this while carrying the 41h highestGPAaswell. The3.19chapter GPA surpassed all-male, all-fraternity and all-sorority averages for the fall tem1. U ing their new found numbers and trength, Eta Sigma kept the ball rolling by winning tl1e award for best float at L'CLA' first annual Homecoming Parade in the last six years. Beyond gro\\-th, awards, and a healthy GPA increase, Eta Sigma has made leaps and bow1ds in their community service efforts. In the fall , a ucces ful Push America volunteer relationship was created with Shriner's Hospital, in which the brothers spend time improving the lives of people with disabilities.
