THE LEADING FRATERNITY EXPERIENCE
WHEN ANDREW, HARRY AND SIMON GATHERED at 90 Broad Street in Charleston on December 10, 1904, for the first meeting of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, their great vision came to life. One hundred and eighteen years later, we strive daily to keep that vision alive and to advance it with pride by delivering the leading fraternity experience for all members.
You may be asking yourself; how do you define the “leading fraternity experience?” The definition may differ from member to member as they experience fraternity on their campuses and in their alumni lives in many unique ways. As I travel from chapter to chapter and city to town, I consistently experience inspirational moments of brotherhood, service and leadership from our students, alumni and volunteers. These moments make up the fraternity experience.
The story of how the Fraternity, the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation, Pi Kappa Phi Properties and The Ability Experience endeavored to deliver the leading fraternity experience over the past year is told on the following pages. You’ll see the work of our chapters in the areas of growth, retention and fundraising in the chapter scorecard. You’ll read the names of Foundation donors who make it possible for the Foundation to support national and chapter-level educational programs, leadership conferences, scholarships and academic awards. You’ll see how Pi Kappa Phi Properties continues to support housing efforts around the country as a vital resource for students and alumni. And you’ll read how The Ability Experience, through the support of donors and friends, continues to serve people with disabilities for 45 years and counting.
These efforts represent our vision of a future where every Pi Kappa Phi embraces his role as a leader, puts service before self and improves the world around him. On page 16, you’ll see how we are laying the foundation for the future with the upcoming re-launch of our leadership consultant program, with 10 new staff members joining the team to support 10 chapter expansions confirmed for the 2023-24 academic year. And on page 52, you’ll be inspired by a story of brotherhood lost, then found, and made stronger by the power of connection – the essence of the fraternity experience.
SPRING 2023 STAR &LAMP 4
In Pi Kappa Phi, Chief Executive Officer
“As you read these stories, I encourage you to reflect on your fraternity journey and the inspirational moments that have shaped you as a leader and as a brother of Pi Kappa Phi. Your story is - and will continue to be - part of our leading fraternity experience.”
A CHALLENGE TO LEAD
BROTHERS AND FRIENDS, I firmly and confidently believe that fraternity is needed now more than ever. In July 2022, immediately after I took an oath as national president of Pi Kappa Phi, I challenged those in the audience to choose to lead. Consistent with that challenge, over the last year, Pi Kappa Phi has embraced leadership in all areas and has chosen to provide uncommon opportunities to our members to learn and practice leadership.
Among our 76 fraternal peers, Pi Kappa Phi is ranked in the top 10 in almost every statistical category. We have more than 10,000 undergraduate members at 157 active undergraduate chapters. In 2022, we supported the chartering or re-chartering of five chapters, and we have 10 confirmed chapter expansions slated for the 2023-24 academic year. We have increased recruitment support for our current chapters and as a result, experienced a 17.5% increase over the prior year’s recruitment results.
Our leadership development and educational programs strengthen our brotherhood for all members. In January 2023, we hosted five in-person Pi Kapp College for Chapter Officers leadership events. Nearly 1,000 brothers participated in these programs, learning leadership skills to build stronger chapters. This summer we will be launching the Institute for Common Loyalty, a leadership development program specifically designed to focus on new member education, and are committing additional resources toward chapter and student development.
We have re-invested in our fraternity infrastructure with the build-out of our marketing and communications team and the implementation of enhanced technology. Pi Kappa Phi and our affiliate organizations, Pi Kappa Phi Properties, Pi Kappa Phi Foundation and The Ability Experience, have collaborated with an intentional commitment and drive to scale our opportunities to serve one another and, separately, each entity’s stakeholders in greater capacities.
In the coming months, the Fraternity and our affiliate organizations will begin the process of developing a strategically aligned vision of a collaborative future. One thing is for certain: the plan will be based on our unwavering commitment to choose to lead, and to be an exceptional leader in the fraternal community.
While we have taken advantage of all the opportunities presented to us over the past year, our work is not done. We have to make the choice to lead every single day. None of the accomplishments over the past year would have been possible if Pi Kappa Phi made the choice to sit back and watch. The Pi Kappa Phi journey is a special one and is an opportunity I hope all of you embrace throughout your experience.
Yours in Pi Kappa Phi,
James M. Smith National President

Ted Scharfenstein, Beta Beta (Florida Southern), traveling counselor in 1961
Jonathon Lewellyn, Iota Rho (Western Illinois), member of the 2023-24 leadership consultant team
AS COLLEGE GRADUATION APPROACHES at the end of the spring semester each year, there exists a sense of panic among the graduates, a collective rush to get the perfect first job, jumpstart their careers and ensure they’ve set themselves up for success. In this mad rush to enter the “real world” and join the workforce, many undergraduate members overlook what may not be such a wild leap into the future but rather a step forward that is guided by an organization they already know and love; the opportunity to be a Pi Kappa Phi consultant.
Whether referred to as “leadership consultants,” “growth consultants” or some other variation of the name, the core role and responsibilities of this position remain the same; help chapters reach their ultimate potential while connecting them directly with the National Fraternity. While the position and responsibilities remain the same, every consultant visit is unique. Likewise, each “consultant class,” the men who serve as consultants within the same year, has a special bond that connects them for their year on staff and the rest of their lives.
One testament to the lifelong connections, memories and dedication to the Fraternity formed during one’s time as a consultant is Ted Scharfenstein, Beta Beta (Florida Southern). His four years on Pi Kappa Phi staff began in June 1961, when the consultant role known to members today was called a “traveling counselor.” Back then, National Headquarters was still in South Carolina. During his time as a traveling counselor, he witnessed the challenges and turmoil faced by chapters around the nation amid the Vietnam War. Philanthropic efforts and leadership development were forced to take the back burner to more crucial pieces of the undergraduate experience, such as recruitment and chapter operations. Chapters were losing members to the war effort, and with their sudden absence went much of the institutional knowledge passed down through generations of membership. Undergraduate members were struggling just to keep their chapters afloat while grappling with the reality of a world consumed by war.
Though his time as a consultant was challenging, it was also incredibly rewarding. Through his continued volunteerism with Pi Kappa Phi over the years, Scharfenstein has directly connected with and mentored those who have followed in his consultant footsteps, such as Andrae Turner, Eta Rho (Texas State), and current historian on National Council. “The fraternity experience has given me too much to ever repay, and this was one way I could give back,” said Turner when asked what had initially compelled him to apply for the consultant position. Similarly, Scharfenstein said, “When I was offered the job, I happily accepted. I had enjoyed my experience in college and thought this would be a terrific way to stay involved with the Fraternity, see the country and figure out what I wanted to do as a career.” While their individual experiences were decades apart, they still mirror each other; after an incredible undergraduate experience, there seemed like no better way to transition out of college and into the real world than to work for the organization that had guided them through their undergraduate years. A component of the program that is often not apparent to those outside it is the networking aspect. Scharfenstein helped Turner secure his current full-time position. Many consultants have similar stories of the connections they made while on staff as bridging the gap between their undergraduate experience and their dream careers. Whether they networked within Pi Kappa Phi before
being offered a consultant role, connected with a member of the Fraternity within their desired field or honed networking skills during their time on the road, the consultant experience provides individuals with real-world skills and connections that are invaluable.
The mentorship and networking aspect of the Fraternity experience have not been lost on future consultant Jonathon Lewellyn, Iota Rho (Western Illinois), who will be serving on staff as a member of the 2023-24 consultant team. Much like Scharfenstein, Lewellyn was offered the consultant role due to his impressive accomplishments as an undergraduate member, including terms as treasurer and archon of his chapter, as well as the connections he formed through participation in Gear Up Florida and the Council of Archons. As a future consultant, he is excited to learn while on the road and have the opportunity to help current chapters while also playing an active role in the Fraternity’s expansion to new campuses and building Pi Kappa Phi’s newest chapters from the ground up. “To be able to start a new chapter, or bring a previously closed one back to campus, is a unique opportunity that I could not pass up,” said Lewellyn when asked what motivated him to take on this role. Recruiting, especially for a new chapter, takes a unique skill set, one that he hopes to cultivate further through his time as a consultant.
As a former consultant who worked on the expansion team from 2014 to 2015, a time when the Fraternity was focused on opening new chapters, Cameron Woods, Iota Omicron (Iona), is familiar with the skillset it takes to recruit the next generation of Pi Kappa Phi brothers. As a founding father of his chapter, he had a unique perspective on what it means to build a legacy. “To a newly chartered chapter,” said Woods, “National Headquarters was a welcome visitor and a reminder that the men were a part of something larger than themselves. In older chapters, sometimes it is easy to label National Headquarters staff as the rules people and the tax collectors and lose sight of the bigger picture. Consultants bridge the gap, building trust and relationships.” As a consultant, he says that he gained a crucial set of “soft” skills that he utilizes every day personally and professionally, as well as lifelong connections with those he met during his time in the program. He keeps in touch regularly with members of his consultant team and the consultants who came before and after him. There is a sense of brotherhood, not just because they are members of Pi Kappa Phi, but because their shared consultant experience bonds them together.
Though their consultant years took place at different times, with different names for the role, with different undergraduate members and in different places, the aforementioned men all agreed that being a consultant for Pi Kappa Phi is one of the most significant decisions they have made throughout their lives. Whether they just needed a bit of time to decide which direction to go regarding their career, wanted to gain experience that would prepare them for their future workplace or wanted to strengthen their ties to the Fraternity, they all agreed that the consultant role provided them with an irreplaceable time for growth, exploration, leadership, connection and reignition of their dedication to Pi Kappa Phi. “There is plenty of time to step into the real world,” says Woods, “but the opportunity to be a consultant, and to learn the lessons this role teaches you, is once in a lifetime.”

ABILITY EXPERIENCE
CHARTING A COURSE
ON A QUIET DECEMBER EVENING IN 1904, three friends made a choice to lead. They made a choice to be bold and different, and the result was the founding of Pi Kappa Phi. Their choice established Pi Kappa Phi as a fraternity that not only stands apart but stands above.
Since the humble beginnings of our Fraternity, much about the world around us has changed. That much is obvious. Beyond the manifest changes in nearly every aspect of life, we now also recognize that the world expects more from the men of Pi Kappa Phi than it does from others. As a Fraternity, and as individuals, we accept this challenge willingly and with enthusiasm in pursuit of our highest ideals and in service to our campuses, our communities and the world.
Pi Kappa Phi has become recognized as a leader in the fraternal world and has served as a model to other organizations through our commitment to our student members, our innovative leadership and educational programs and the life-long relationships fostered by the Fraternity. Your support has been vital to advancing Pi Kappa Phi and to providing the leading fraternity experience that has a real-world impact.
In 2022, thanks to the support of our alumni, students and friends who support this vision, the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation provided more than $160,000 in scholarship funds that are a vital part of the more than $535,000 in support made available to Pi Kappa Phi, The Ability Experience and our undergraduate members. These funds support our student members and foster excellence in the fraternity experience for individuals, chapters and the National Fraternity.
By any measure, Pi Kappa Phi has come to be recognized as one of the shining lights of the Greek world. While the recognition of our peers is welcomed, we must focus on what that means for our members. From our humble beginnings in Charleston in 1904, our Fraternity has engaged in the challenging work to become the standard of excellence for developing young men and helping them achieve their full potential.
With the appointment of our first Chief Advancement Officer Steve Esworthy, Xi (Roanoke), the Foundation is poised to make a strategic shift in our support of the Fraternity, our affiliated entities and our members. We stand ready to move boldly in a new direction that is student-centered and matches the interests of our loyal alumni with strategic initiatives supporting a best-in-class fraternity experience.
Our efforts today will chart a course for a future that we – like our Founders before us – likely cannot comprehend at this moment. Our pursuit of excellence will lay a foundation for generations of young men who will strive to stand apart and stand above in all aspects of their lives. We must not only continue to maintain the highest level of fraternal excellence but provide the support necessary to ensure this experience will rise to meet the needs of generations of men to follow.
On behalf of the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation, I thank you for your trust and commitment in the pursuit of our founders’ legacy. I am humbled by the generosity of our Pi Kappa Phi community. With your ongoing support, we can ensure that Pi Kappa Phi continues to stand apart and stand above just as we have since that December evening in 1904.
In Pi Kappa Phi,
J. Ernest Johnson, Alpha Iota (Auburn) Chairman, Pi Kappa Phi Foundation

My favorite memory so far has been the time I spent as my chapter’s archon. During this time I arguably learned more than all the classes I took in the same time span combined. In class I learned about all the characteristics that are needed to become a great leader, but during my time as archon, I had the opportunity to put those traits I learned into practice. Motivation, respect and how to navigate a tough situation are all skills that I had the opportunity to improve upon during my time as an undergraduate member.

39 UPDATE US: PIKAPP.ORG/SUBMIT NEWS
A VITAL RESOURCE
PI KAPPA PHI PROPERTIES, now in our 58th year, continues to support Pi Kappa Phi’s housing efforts around the country as a vital resource for students and alumni.
Last summer at the 57th Supreme Chapter, we reported on some of the accomplishments of your Pi Kappa Phi Properties organization. Pi Kappa Phi Properties is made up of three investment vehicles: a property management company that manages the 25 locations owned by Pi Kappa Phi Properties; the Stephen P. DePalma Infrastructure Loan Fund, a lending facility with approximately $2 million in asset value that provides loans to all chapters for housing needs; and the Eric J. Almquist Housing Investment Fund which was created at the 2012 Supreme Chapter to provide capital to invest into new properties. As the Fraternity considers growth in the future, so must Pi Kappa Phi Properties consider opportunities to support new and existing chapters where housing is a competitive factor for their success.
For more than 35 years, the Stephen P. DePalma Infrastructure Loan Fund (ILF) has helped chapters and alumni organizations with short-term project-based resources to secure or improve housing at their chapters. Dozens of chapters have benefitted in some form over the years from the ILF.
As we enter the eleventh year since the implementation of the Eric J. Almquist Housing Investment Fund (HIF), we are pleased to report that the HIF has been transformational in providing approximately $2 million in capital, enabling Pi Kappa Phi Properties to purchase 16 properties to date.
The Pi Kappa Phi Properties Board of Directors is comprised of 13 volunteer alumni directors who are industry leaders in all aspects of real estate acquisition, development, renovation, financing, construction and property management. They donate countless hours to the betterment of Pi Kappa Phi Properties. Our board’s leadership and our staff team’s work have made Pi Kappa Phi Properties the model for national housing corporations within the fraternal community.
As we look forward, Pi Kappa Phi Properties continues to enhance the fraternity experience through access to chapter housing, but more importantly, through focusing on protecting the Fraternity’s real estate stock and relationships. Pi Kappa Phi Properties is pleased to work with many chapters and alumni corporations as they pursue fundraising development campaigns to improve housing for the next generation.
The Pi Kappa Phi Properties board and staff remain available to support the organization’s housing pursuits, and we appreciate the opportunity to serve as the organization’s national housing corporation!
Sincerely,
Anthony M. Noce Alpha Upsilon (Drexel) Chairman, Pi Kappa Phi Properties

PI KAPPA PHI PROPERTIES
ENHANCING THE FRATERNITY EXPERIENCE THROUGH ACCESS TO CHAPTER HOUSING
Pi Kappa Phi Properties supports chapters’ efforts to acquire and maintain quality, affordable, safe and competitive housing through a well-funded real estate investment platform. Pi Kappa Phi Properties, Inc. has served the fraternity as a professional asset management corporation since 1966. The following is a snapshot of Pi Kappa Phi Properties in 2022, delivering on its mission to help chapters acquire, construct, improve, finance or manage housing that is competitive on their respective campuses.
ERIC J. ALMQUIST HOUSING INVESTMENT FUND was established in 2012 to provide quality local chapter homes for our members. It is named in honor of past National Secretary Eric J. Almquist, Alpha Omicron (Iowa State), who passed away during his service to the Fraternity in 2018 and is funded through an annual fee paid by undergraduate chapter members. The fee is based on a chapter’s total number of members.

INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL
I AM EXCITED TO SHARE WITH YOU THE INCREDIBLE accomplishments of our organization this past year. It has been an honor to witness Pi Kappa Phi members continue to serve people with disabilities for 45 years and counting.
Despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic, our organization has continued to grow and make a positive impact. This year, we celebrated major milestones for Journey of Hope and Gear Up Florida, raising an impressive $225,000 during our anniversary ride-along from Richmond, Virginia, to Washington, D.C. We were proud to honor Chad Coltrane, Epsilon Iota (UNC-Greensboro), by renaming the Philanthropy Chairman of the Year Award. In addition, our Ride Along members and corporate sponsors raised $325,000 in his honor.
Our chapters have also continued to make a difference, raising an impressive $645,000 for people with disabilities. And we were thrilled to see the return of Pi Kapp Gaming. Through Pi Kapp Gaming, Pi Kappa Phi chapters have the opportunity to raise funds while they focus on gaming for inclusion with partner organizations. Students also returned to camps in Illinois, North Carolina and Texas to build accessible amenities for our partners during Ability Camp weekends. Gear Up Florida was a huge success, with alumni like Dudley Woody, Xi (Roanoke), leading the way and raising more than $32,000 at 69 years old! Across the state of Florida, our team had 15 Friendship Visits and presented more than $17,000 in grants to organizations. It was an incredible accomplishment that made a huge difference in the lives of those we serve.
Our TransAmerica route returned for the first time since 2019, and the team greatly impacted the organizations they met with along the way. Team members and corporate sponsors raised an impressive $500,000 for the Journey of Hope program, and we awarded grants to 40 organizations in honor of Jason Tirado, Zeta Epsilon (George Mason) and Todd Porterfield, Alpha Delta (Washington).
To cap off an amazing year, Brittney Norman, spouse of Thane Norman, Epsilon Iota (UNC-Greensboro ), received the NHL Stick Tap for Service award and named The Ability Experience as the beneficiary. Brittney, Thane and The Ability Experience were recognized during the Stanley Cup finals.
None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the generosity and support of our donors. We are incredibly grateful for your continued support, and we want you to know that your contributions are making a real difference in the lives of people with disabilities.
Thank you for your commitment to The Ability Experience. We look forward to continuing our mission of serving people with disabilities for years to come.
Sincerely,
Joel Borellis Sigma (South Carolina) Chairman, The Ability Experience

ZETA ZETA ALUMNI ADVOCATE FOR INCLUSION
by Rachel Greene
FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS, a group of Zeta Zeta (North Florida) alumni has been hosting The Ability Experience’s Gear Up Florida team as they pass through Jacksonville. This same group of Zeta Zeta alumni has been a Gear Up Florida corporate sponsor for several years, having a vested interest in the event as well as the cause. To do more to support the Fraternity’s philanthropic initiative, the group inquired about bringing an Ability Experience Challenge event to Jacksonville. After some discussion, they landed on the Gate River Run.
The next step was to identify a local partner organization. Challenge Enterprises of North Florida, which has hosted an annual Friendship Visit for the Gear Up Florida Team since 2009, was a perfect fit. Challenge Enterprises recruited participants with disabilities to ride in wheelchairs at the event, while Zeta Zeta alumni recruited runners to push the wheelchairs and led the charge on fundraising. After officially partnering, the first annual Gate River Run was held in 2020, with 22 participants, including four athletes with disabilities. At the inaugural event, the group raised $6,400 for The Ability Experience and completed a successful 15k event.
A key player in the creation and evolution of this event, Zeta Zeta alumnus Mike Carter said, “What started as a small idea to fundraise at the Jacksonville Gate River Run in 2014 has turned into an inclusive, larger scale event that continues to grow. We started with a handful of alumni runners and a popup tent, and now in 2023 featured over 70 community team members, including 24 enabled athletes, raising more than $30,000 for people with disabilities. We are excited to turn Gate River Run into the premier running event for The Ability Experience and welcome all members of Pi Kappa Phi to join us in Jacksonville in March 2024.”
Another Zeta Zeta alumnus who has played a key role in this event’s rise to success is Rob Raesemann. Prior to working on this event, he had been a longtime Ability Experience supporter, participating in Gear Up Florida in 2003, 2004, 2014 and 2021, and Journey of Hope (TransAmerica) in 2005 and 2019. After serving as archon of his chapter, he graduated in 1992. He drifted from the Fraternity for a bit but was ushered back to volunteering by one of his chapter brothers, and he has not looked back. He hopes that through this event he can inspire more alumni to rally for the cause, especially those
50 SPRING 2023 STAR &LAMP
who graduated prior to the birth of The Ability Experience. He said, “One of our goals is to engage the large population of local alumni. Many seasoned Pi Kappa Phi alumni, both in and out of the Jacksonville area, have not seen the modern Ability Experience, and this gives them that chance to re-engage.”
For those alumni who may not be familiar with the philanthropy, Raesemann wants them to see firsthand what it is about, saying,
Through his many experiences, he has come to know the impact of the philanthropic arm of the Fraternity and has become passionate about helping, through his actions as well as through donating. He says, “As alumni, many of us have the capacity to donate more money than undergraduate members, but it is up to us to take the initiative to make this difference.”
Though COVID-19 temporarily slowed the event’s progress, the Gate River Run has seen tremendous growth over the past four years. Many who participated in and enjoyed the event have not been quiet about it in the community, and that has made all the difference. Raesemann said, “The people who come and run with us have such a great time and such a rewarding experience that they love coming back year after year, and word of mouth has been instrumental in the growth of this event.”
For any groups or individuals wanting to host an event like this one, Raesemann says, “Reach out to The Ability Experience or a group that serves people with disabilities in your own community. Just get in there, meet these people, have these experiences, learn to be a better advocate and help your local community.” For Zeta Zeta alumni, this event was just an idea when it began, but it has become so much more. While Jacksonville is fortunate to have multiple events like this one, not every community does. Some communities have no programs in place for those with disabilities or have programs with little to no leadership in place, and that is where Raesemann believes Pi Kappa Phi can continue to grow its impact. “If we can inspire a few more of these events in a few more communities and continue to lead the charge in helping those with disabilities,” says Raesemann, “that’s really what this is all about.”
“The Ability Experience is unique, it is experience based. It has a lasting impact on not just the population we are helping, but us as well. You cannot know the true impact until you experience it for yourself.”

A BROTHERHOOD LOST, THEN FOUND
by Rachel Greene
WHEN DELTA UPSILON CHAPTER (PITTSBURGH)
Historian Kevin Keneally emailed alumni asking for donations and advice on fundraising in April 2022, Bob Brinker felt compelled to answer the call. While he was eager to help and connect with the current undergraduate members, he had someone else in mind who could help them much more, the true fundraising mastermind of their collegiate days; Chip Carton.
During his time in the chapter, Carton convinced his brothers to push a wheelchair from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the capital in Harrisburg. The journey, which was about 200 miles, sounded absurd to every other chapter member, but Carton wouldn’t take no for an answer. He convinced his brothers that despite the amount of effort this would take, it would be worth it because it would bring great publicity to the Fraternity’s philanthropic initiative at the time, Project PUSH (now The Ability Experience). When he finally got everyone on board with his ambitious plan, Chip wasted no time ensuring the logistics were in order so the journey could go off without a hitch, calling local police departments to block off streets, contacting hotels to ask if they would provide complimentary lodging to the fraternity men during their journey and even reaching out to the governor of Pennsylvania at the time to ask him to make an appearance. The governor could not attend, but his wife eagerly met the chapter on the steps of the capitol when they arrived to commend their efforts.
If any alumnus could help the chapter learn to fundraise, Brinker knew Carton was the man for the job. Having Carton share his ideas and wisdom with the chapter was a phenomenal idea. However, a slight barrier to this idea
was that the two men had not seen or spoken to each other in decades. Years prior, as the brothers of the Delta Upsilon Chapter gathered for a reunion and reminisced about their collegiate years in the Fraternity, the men called him over and over, hoping he would answer and be willing to come to the reunion or at least reunite with them over the phone. But they had no luck.
After having call after call go to voicemail again this time around, Brinker decided he was not going to give up that easily. He searched Facebook for his long-lost Pi Kappa Phi brother and finally found him. Much to his surprise, Carton was very active on Facebook, primarily posting updates about his longterm, fatal illness, ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). None of his brothers had seen him in years, and none of them knew he had been living with the illness for far longer than the life expectancy. Carton had not wanted the men who had once seen him leading the chapter to push a wheelchair across the state of Pennsylvania to see him now, using a cane and lacking the strength and stamina he once had, so he ignored their calls repeatedly. More eager than ever now to reconnect, Brinker sent him a Facebook message.
Days later, and after ample consideration, Carton replied and agreed to see him in person. He shared that his reasoning for ignoring the phone calls from the reunion and cutting contact with his brothers completely was his diagnosis. Not wanting to bring down the fun, happy energy of the group, he remained out of touch with them for years. While his brothers may have been eager to help, he had never even thought to ask. In his mind, he had accepted his fate, and his diagnosis was his burden alone to bear. To his surprise, Brinker not only wanted
52 SPRING 2023 STAR &LAMP
to spend time with him despite his illness but also did not intend to waste any time when it came to helping him fight it.
With Brinker’s connection with the undergraduate members of Delta Upsilon Chapter and his newfound knowledge of Chip’s diagnosis, he felt they had been given the perfect opportunity for the chapter to learn about fundraising and support their brother in his fight to raise funds and awareness for ALS. After hearing Carton’s story, more than 50 members of the chapter, young and old, current and alumni, rallied together to fundraise on behalf of his team to attend the ALS walk in Pittsburg in the fall of 2022. Carton was astonished to see the chapter’s efforts for someone who had been in the chapter 40 years prior, remarking, “I had not even considered reaching out to the Fraternity for help regarding my ALS; this never crossed my mind. I did not know I had people that loved me this much.”
Arguably, an even more powerful impact is the one that Brinker and Carton have had on current undergraduate members. The chapter was given the resources to fundraise successfully and a united cause that their entire chapter, alumni and undergraduate members alike, could rally behind. Furthermore, they have witnessed the longevity of the fraternity experience firsthand through the strong bonds the
alumni share. Keneally shared, “Hearing this story from our alumni, many members of the chapter were getting choked up. It was incredible to see not only the impact we had made on Chip’s life through fundraising but also just to see that the connections we are currently making within the chapter really are lifelong.”
While the story of Carton and the Delta Upsilon Chapter may be unique, Brinker recognizes that the sentiment behind it is one that all brothers of Pi Kappa Phi can relate to, stating,
53 UPDATE US: PIKAPP.ORG/SUBMIT NEWS
“This is not just a story about ALS, or even about Chip Carton. It is generations of fraternity brothers, even if we have not talked in decades, rallying behind someone whom we called our brother and still share that connection with, despite time or distance between us. This is a story about a brotherhood that lasts a lifetime and spans across generations, the brotherhood that only the fraternity experience can provide.”

ALEXANDER BALDWIN | IOTA ETA
ALEXANDER BALDWIN, IOTA ETA (EMBRY-RIDDLE),
was recently accepted into the Delta Air Lines Propel Pathway Program, a collaboration between select universities that offer top-of-the-line pilot training programs and Delta. Working for a major airline is his lifelong dream, and he is thrilled to be making a career out of his passion. Baldwin notes that his experiences in Pi Kappa Phi have prepared him for his role with a company like Delta Air Lines, stating, “It’s a lot like a functional brotherhood; everyone on the team is a little different, but we all have the same core values and are willing to put in the effort to see the organization thrive.” Because of these similarities, Baldwin was able to draw from his Pi Kappa Phi experiences during the interview process, particularly those of being philanthropy chairman and attending Supreme Chapter. As philanthropy chairman, he planned events, cultivated his chapter’s passion for the philanthropy and learned to take on more responsibility than a general member. At Supreme Chapter, he learned the importance of making connections and building relationships. For those seeking to take their career to new heights, he recommends, “Start looking into furthering your aviation education at a flight school; anyone can attend these at any age!”
BRADLEY COLLINS | ALPHA ETA
IN FEBRUARY 2022, ALPHA ETA (SAMFORD), alumnus Bradley Collins and his girlfriend, Chrissy Metz - star of the hit NBC television show “This Is Us,” cowrote and published “When I Talk to God, I Talk About You,” a children’s book that gently teaches children to pray, regardless of their respective faith or religion. The inspiration for this book was born out of the frequent, deep conversations that Collins and Metz, as a couple that began dating at the start of the pandemic, would often find themselves having. “It is a book that we, and many other deeply religious individuals I have spoken with, wish we had when we were younger,” said Collins. The book was released on February 14, 2022, through Flamingo Books, a division of Penguin Random House, and spent two weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. In conjunction with the book, the couple released an album of children’s lullabies, “Prayed for This Day,” composed and recorded with the idea of lulling children to sleep after reading them the book. Collins says, “The book and the album are a great gift for new parents. The book caters to people who are deeply religious, who love it because it is a book about God, but it also caters to those who are more on the spiritual side, because it is not a God book.” The book, which is narrated by animals, is open-ended and aims to bring prayer into the lives of anyone who may be interested. Collins credited his Pi Kappa Phi experience with teaching him to take on various roles and responsibilities, ensuring he is never taking up someone else’s space, but still making sure that every space in a project is filled. This ability to adjust and be flexible when working with others is something that he uses every day.

GREG BUEHNER | THETA THETA
MANAGING DIRECTOR OF PI KAPPA PHI PROPERTIES
GREG BUEHNER, Theta Theta (Iowa), was recognized at The Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards at the University of South Carolina in February 2023 with the Outstanding House Corporation Board Member Award. The nomination letter for the award stated, “This year, during a major facilities emergency in the house, Greg shifted other projects to focus on the impact had when a sprinkler head erupted, causing such major damage to the house that it forced residents to be relocated and meals temporarily suspended. While he lives in a different city, Greg arrived in Columbia on the day of the event and immediately began making arrangements for the residents of the facility. He found an immediate space for them to relocate and ultimately another long-term solution for the remainder of the fall semester. He established strong communication with residents and their families through the transition and has continued to keep them updated on the status of the house and plans to move in … Greg is a strong partner of the university and an advocate for a healthy fraternity experience which has been shown through his dedication to this chapter over time and especially this year.” Chief Executive Officer Emeritus Mark Timmes, Alpha Epsilon (Florida), said, “Greg’s commitment to fraternity housing is unmatched in the interfraternal world. We are pleased he was recognized for his years of excellent work in the Greek Village at the University of South Carolina.”
LUKE TURNER | KAPPA DELTA
LUKE TURNER, KAPPA DELTA (FLORIDA ATLANTIC), is currently enrolled in his first year at California Western School of Law in San Diego, California. He was recently given the opportunity to compete against other first-year law students in The Gafford Trial Competition, a mock-trial competition where students test their advocacy skills against other students. Of 72 participants, Turner was among 12 finalists to receive a Distinguished Advocate Award. Not only is this award a prestigious honor, but it also serves as a prerequisite for students who are hoping to join a competitive advocacy team at California Western School of Law. As a first-generation college graduate and now law student, Turner hopes to inspire others to pursue their dreams, saying, “When an opportunity is in front of you, don’t hesitate. Too often, people shy away from pursuing their dreams because they don’t feel ready. You may never feel completely ready, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go for it.” He credits much of his success in college and beyond to his experiences in Kappa Delta Chapter, stating, “I owe Pi Kappa Phi a lot. This Fraternity was my solid foundation in college and truly the catalyst to my success. It instilled in me a set of core values and a strong support group, useful life skills and a lifelong brotherhood that I will forever cherish.” After completing law school, Turner hopes to pursue an entertainment law career and is excited to represent and support his future clients.

Patrick Ester McGuire was born in Camp Lejeune North Carolina on June 15, 1947, to Major John McGuire (USMC) and Virginia Blackburn McGuire where he was raised the son of a Marine Corps officer until his father’s retirement in 1957. They started a new life in West Jefferson, North Carolina, where Pat grew up to become an avid hunter and fisherman. He graduated from Beaver Creek High School in 1965 with a voracious interest in science and geology and went on to NC State to study petroleum engineering. It was there that he became a brother in Pi Kappa Phi, serving his chapter as archon. Along the way, he met Frances Hoag, a nursing school student whom he went on to marry in 1969. Pat used his newly earned engineering degree to join the growing oil business with Texaco where would stay for the next 32 years. He retired in 2002 and went on to focus on his intellectual passions of astronomy, photography, and aviation. Pat even got an amateur pilot’s license at one point. Patrick passed away peacefully on February 9, 2023. He will be greatly missed.

PHINAL THOUGHT
How would you define ‘the leading fraternity experience?’ How has this been provided to you by Pi Kappa Phi?
Bradley Collins | Alpha Eta
“Being a Pi Kappa Phi is lifelong. I knew no one when I stepped foot on Samford University’s campus. That changed when I went through the rush process and learned what it meant to be a Pi Kapp. I spent four years with my Alpha Eta brothers, who are some of the best people and friends in my life, even today. The bonds, memories, friendships and lessons we learned bring us back together as if no time had passed. Being a Pi Kappa Phi is part of my day-to-day life and I am proud to call these men my brothers.”
Jonathon Lewellyn | Iota Rho
“I feel like we do provide the leading fraternity experience, not just because of the strengths of our Fraternity, but also because of The Ability Experience. We may not be the largest fraternity in size or be ranked the highest on every list, but the national experiences provided by Pi Kappa Phi are unmatched by any other organization. It is easy to sign a check and send it off, never really seeing the people you are helping; but it is different with The Ability Experience. As the name implies, it is experience driven and those experiences are what set us apart as a Fraternity and as individuals.
Luke Turner | Kappa Delta
“The leading fraternity experience can be defined as when an individual, joining a Fraternity, realizes and recognizes the importance of valuing and serving others. Pi Kappa Phi provides the foundation to become a responsible citizen through its core values and philanthropic initiatives. Applying these same principles to other experiences will make you an ideal man who cares for others, stands up for what is right, and always continues to make a difference in your community, no matter how small. That is Pi Kappa Phi, that’s the leading fraternity experience.”
Cameron Woods | Iota Omicron
“I would define the leading fraternity experience as a lifelong brotherhood of leaders who are bound together by our common loyalty and live our ritual. I would not be who I am or where I am without Pi Kappa Phi.”
