The brief is to create a site specific installations for the landscape festival 2018 on Štvanice based on the winning competition entry by studio RKAW. The installation involves interaction between visitors and the nature of the landscape that creates an impact on the island at the end of festival. It represents a visualized idea of how human and nature interact in the world and how human’s and trees’ connections are related. The contrast between trees and people is being represented by the connections between trees on the island using tree trunks, and the way people move within the site.

Landscape Festival is arranged every year in the Czech Republic since 2014 in Prague, Pilsen and Opava. The festival was made when it was realized that there had been limited space for landscape architecture in the Czech Republic. A debate has been going on through out the country among artists, architects, the public and the political body in order to cultivate public space in the long run. Not only for the locals, but also the international experts are to be involved in the project. The basic idea is to raise awareness of the Czech architectural and urban communities and the scope and meaning of landscape architecture in relation to contemporary architecture and public space.

Štvanice island locates on the Vltava river between Holesovice and Karlin districts of Prague. It was mainly a sporty island. Tracing back to the 17th century, the island was used for hunting rabbits by dogs, hence, the name Štvanice that translates to hunt, chase. In the end of 17th century, an arena was built for hunting until 1816. In the 1930s, Štvanice stadium was built entirely by wood and it was one of the oldest stadium in Prague. It was unfortunately demolished in 2011. To this date, Štvanice still remains an area for activities such as, tennis and skatepark and public swimming pool in the summer. Through the island passes Hlávkov bridge and Negrelliho viaduct.

In 1118, the island was named “the Great island” or “the Great Venice” since it was surrounded by smaller islands. Apart from sports, there is a theatre called VILA , located on the west side of the island, that is still active to today. The island today attracts people mainly during the spring/summer season, where dog walkers and local families come to relax. Currently, the island consists of tennis courts, skate parks, dirt bike tracks, the theatre and open space.

With concept ‘human / nature’, the contrast between trees and people is being represented by the connections between trees on the island underground to above-ground using tree trunks, and the way people move within the site. A simple method is being done to represent human’s connection. Footsteps of people moving on the site is being traced by laying out a soft material that creates an impression with pressure from foot. A thick layer of sand is laid all over the pavement. For trees’ connection, locally cut tree trunks are being laid across the paths, connecting each trees in certain area of the site. A small footprint-shaped is cut out of trunks to represent an impact of human’s impressions on nature.

The installation signifies relationship between nature and human, how human brings chaos to the living world, and affect the way trees live. Trees have always been a part of people. They bring peace just by looking at them. They give you shelter from rain or wind. There has always been relationship between nature and human, but people tend to forget, and neglect that nature will always be there all the time. The installation is created in order to bring awareness of the environment and also trace the way people move around landscape. It shows that environment changes everyday and that we affect it unknowingly.

existing condition of the islandNo good connection between two sides of the island- the theatre and the sports part. Due to the highway on Hlavkuv most, the only pedastrian path through either sides is under the bridge, which is unpleasant to go through. On the theatre side, various unused land are left and have potential to become a public space for locals and visitors. On the sports side, the pathways are not well connected. Some would lead to nowhere, while some does not have a path at all.
