ife is one crazy rat race. A lot wants to go first because the second ones are barely remembered. When we were born, even before we were clothed, our parents had already set a dream for us - to finish college: quiet the pressure for a minute-old infant. Not all parents could grant their children money for inheritance that is why education is the sole treasure they could leave us when they have to be with the Almighty. For this reason, they work hard to save a lot of money, and sacrifice some of their needs, just to see their children go up the stage in a toga to claim the diploma. Teens as we are, we're surrounded by distractions and temptations, and with the want to adjust to new environment, some fall into the wrong company. They were influenced by peers who drink, gamble, smoke, and waste money on computer games. Our parents be like "Do not do that, do not go there. Do this, and stay here". Driven by curiosity,

ere we unfollow the words of the concerned. As we age, we realize that it is better if "we haven't done that, rather did this" ; "if we haven't went there and stay here rather". Next thing we knew, we are already ruining our lives and destroying our future. Repentance comes last, not for us to mull over the things that cannot be undone. It is for us to salvage what was left of us. Yes, we had mistakes. Yes, we did wrong. Yes, we messed up. But we can still make things better. We may not be able to correct our past, but we can do things right today and we can make a better future. Parents will never run out of chances laid for us and if we are given another one, we need not to ' waste it. We might have failed and disappointed them with our first try, but as long as they don't give up on us, there should be no reason to give up on them, and on our dreams, too. Getting there, on the peak of success is hard & tricky. There'll be no elevator; we need to work our way up through the stairs. If there's no stairway, we have to build one to get there. We will get tired of course, but we must not give up - for the view on top will be the best; it would be breath taking, it will be worth it. To the ones who thought they were left behind, the not-early bird who didn't catch the worm who knows you might be the second mouse to ge~ the cheese. Success might be prolonged, but like the wine, it'll be sweeter. Never give up. It's not about getting there first; it's about getting there no matter what, and the journey, that matters. •

Is Youth Real~ the Hope of the Future? by Melojeanlazaro

W

ould we blame the late Jose Rizal for quoting "the youth is the hope of our Motherland"? For this statement had been long overused, it had become both a challenge and a responsibility for the new generation. Overtime, the youth was being told to do good because the fragile future lies on our hands. The so-called civilization and progress brought a lot of changes on the way of life of people - young and old. The youth somehow developed this idea that made them think that they are superior and started to act and do what only adults should do which of course isn't right. Then who is to blame? The older generations are the ones who invented cigarettes and started puffing smokes. They are the ones who brewed malt and fermented grape juice and drunk its product in the first place. They invented computers to lessen labor yet programmed games with colorful and attractive graphics and interface. They are the ones who invented video cameras and took sensitive videos, images and films. Have it occurred to the brewers, the cigarette-makers, the programmers, and inventors that the breakthrough will and can be used in evil? EAGLE

"Older men declare war. But it is the youth that must fight and die." - Herbert Hoover

What the youth see today are leaders who clamor over millions and racketeer public money. We see greediness, injustice, and corruption and it corrupts our young minds. It makes us think that it is right because the "models" we look up to do it so easy. What I see is that the youth is the victim of the lousy system our elders had put up. We are the victims of the negatives of the progress that they are proud of. If a beautiful woman was raped, should we blame the woman for being so attractive? Now that the youth was lead to the wrong path, should the blame be on us for being so vulnerable, wherein in the first place, we are genetically engineered to curiosity to things new to us? These old men knew, because they were once children, that our age is not yet ready for the harsh reality of the real world yet where are they? What are they doing aside from setting bad examples? Now they see that the youth is wasted. They blame it on things they created and invented. They blame us. They blame us for their failure to guide and educate us. They think they are so perfect because they made "progress". They cannot blame themselves because they knew somehow that they have done wrong. They didn't try to preserve our innocence. Or maybe, they fear

that we will soon overpower them because we already developed the intelligence that never occurred to them. Yes, the youth is, and will always be the hope of the future. The old men will soon perish, but they will be remembered for their wrong doings. Lke the leaves, they will soon fall and the youth will rise with the fruit from whatever they fertilized us with. We will soon rule. We will live by the legacy and the lessons they had imparted on us. But first things first. Let the youth be young. Let us learn from our mistakes. Let us live by the consequences of our actions. Let us taste hell. In this way, we will be stronger. We will be wiser. We will have a better understanding, a wider wisdom, and more rational judgment. Stronger is better, and better is better. What the world will soon see is a future that it never witnessed. We will make our part on the history. Soon. On the right time. Let us first enjoy our salad days before it's over. The future depends on us, the youth. But the youth depends on old men who declare wars and make peace. We need their guidance and their wisest philosophies. We need their care, support, and teachings so that we will be better. The future was laid in our hands, and we will handle and rule it better. YEAH, BETTER. •

en God brought me back o our home province Masbate more than two decades ago, I thought my passion for writing and journalistic career has indeed ended. Masbate is one of the poorest provinces in our country and real, hardcore journalism is not heard of in this part of the country. When I came back in 1990s electricity has just started to operate in our town Cataingan-77 km away from the heart of the province. Our roads and bridges were hardly passable especially on rainy days. Despite of its state, I love my province. My heart goes out for her and been in searched for ways which I could help her even in my own little way. Two decades ago, I wrote an article (to comply an assignment), about its roads and bridges and submitted it to the sole respected community paper in the province. My article landed in its pages. But when the publisher/ editor died, his

paper died with him too. After that, I wrote maybe three or four articles in some short-lived newspaper. My love for writing was in the verge of oblivion. But then again "the writer" within my inner core never ceases to surface, again and again. This time, as reinstalled adviser of CMC's school paper The Eagle (formerly it was named The Lighthouse). My passion for writing has started perking up. YET THIS TIME, after those emotionally and professionally enriching wandering years, I write not only out of passion but with social substance and relevance. I'm sure what I want to write about. Starting with- CMC. Included is the presentation of propositions (submitted as course requirement in my doctorate studies), in line with its dream and vision of becoming a Center for Development or maybe Center of Excellence for Teacher Education in the province of Masbate. •

Ariel Magallanes and the rest of the ROTC officers joins ROTC Summer Camp Training held at Bicol University College of Engineering, Legaspi City, Albay on April 7 May 4 2014. The said training offered classroom discussion, battalion ceremonial parade, firing and other disciplineconcerned activities. Furthermore, right after the end of Summer Camp Training, Advance ROTC Academic Phase Training followed. It is a 14 days training conducted also at the same place. Lke SCT it practically aims to discipline them while at the same time giving them new experience. Advance ROTC Academic Phase Training provides three dimensions of training and experience as follows: • Open Collar • Ranger's Night of Smoker's Night • Hell's Day Open collar was given four days before graduation. It is a two-hour activity in which everyone was given an opportunity to hold their own freedom. It was then immediately followed by Ranger's Night or Smoker's Night. By that time they can literally smoke, drink beverages, or have party. Hell's day was made two days before graduation. It was given to those members of every battalion who is the smallest or least handsome to be a leader of battalion or to speak their mind. Both ROTS Summer Camp Training and Advance ROTC Academic Phase Training are made all over the country. •

"Only deserve to live those willing to die for a noble task." -Moral Recovery Team

T

he Values Formation and Spiritual Transformation Council visits Cataingan Municipal College on February 10, 2014. They held a symposium and a short lecture about the effects of common vices in our society such as smoking cigarettes, drinking liquors and abusing illegal drugs. The Moral Recovery Program was mandated by our government under Presidential Proclamation # 64 and # 282 and Executive Order # 319 and # 34 7 started on 1992. This government program aims to "Transform the image of every Filipino and to bring every Filipino to a God-centered life" and promote 4M. (MAKA-DIYOS, MAKABAYAN, MAKA-TAO at MAKAKALIKASAN). Mas bate is the sixth province this program mashed and Cataingan Municipal College is the third to the last school that they visited. It is one of the most memorable, for it does not simply offers information, awareness and mere lecture but also offers a simple way to

build a strong relationship of every individual to the Almighty Creator and Ever Powerful Father in heaven. It is said to be the first ever dramatic lecture that did happen and left 90% of audience a guilt-free heart and teary eyes. Four of the actual team members came. They are Marlon Y Goltiano (Architect and team leader), Darren Angelo M. Ladao (Theologist), Rey Romel R. Torre (Theologist and Computer Engineer), Renz Mark A. Marquez (rheologist), and Imark Suficiencia (Local Lecturer). When asked about the possibility of their next visitation, here's what Mr. Ladao said, "Yup, there is, but maybe after we finish the whole country. We don't know exactly when and who will be coming back but hopefully we (the same group) if still possible will return". This program is intended to lessen and even end the worsening problem and issues of crime, vices and immorality that is very rampant to our society. •

The training didn't just offered the show case for leadership but conferred a broader concept to life of young minds to use both weapon and guard in attaining success. Leaders are those who submit themselves to their very own purpose. They are the ones who see beyond their personal needs, honed by subset of realities, open to see and learn through the act of others. According to Miss Tetchie, The Focal Person of ATI, A leader is someone who puts himself in the center of realities- GOD, WORLD, SELF and others. And a leader will make sure that he has a harmonious relationship with center of realities. AND NOT BEING PUSHED BY SOMEONE ELSE!! It is but his prime purpose is to lead and to submit himself the community under no pretentions, beyond his personal fears, sand sensitivity and love only for what he does but rather also for the welfare of this society. As students of young age, we have the big privilege to do something for the betterment of our nation. San n1ang Kabataan in Question

T

he SK was created to recognize the youth and their importance as they were considered the hope of their Motherland. SK serves as the training ground for the youth & prepares them to be future leaders in our society. Through time, people start to question if their existence is really to serve the youth and the government or to fulfill their own agenda. The SK does not now trains the youth but now feeds another bunch of future crocs in the government. Corruption has always been a hot topic in the Philippine government and it is really spiteful that the youth is somehow another tool for such selfishness and greed. SK also adds to the issue of political dynasty wherein the governor, congressman, mayor, barangay captain, and councilor is also another member of the immediate family. Is it the fault of the youth for allowing themselves to be another robot in a corrupted government? Is it the fault of the government for allowing such leader to make use of the youth for personal

benefits? Or is it the fault of the people, the voters, for choosing crooks instead of responsible leaders in exchange for a few hundred bills and in the fear of a gun in their faces? Last year, SK Election was suspended because the importance of this sector is still in debate. SK Officials, usually 15-17 years old, aren't qualified to sign legal papers for the reason that they haven't yet reach the legal age - 18. They are always under the jurisdiction of the Barangay Captain. Their percentage allocation from the Barangay Treasury is also in question if it is being materialized into useful projects or just used for self-consumption. Though, some SK Officials are responsible and are really for service. They provide the youth with basketball courts, libraries and many other more which helps the youth develop their potentials instead of involving themselves in drugs and other crimes. SK has a good vision and yet this vision is blurred by greed that people plants in them. I believe that SKis good, but the officials? Well, that's for you to decide. •

and • on ur world creates and embraces changes every single tick of clock's longest hand, that's why changes of so many things takes place from educational systems, world economy, fashion, technology and even the way man believes about his existence. It's quite amazing how a single world could still revolve properly far from chaotic axis despite of having billions of settlers who possess different beliefs due to the kind of denomination they're in. This changes in ways of believing in spiritual matters explains why tackling spiritual things is one of the most serious and most sensitive topic that is seldom picked by writers to write about for single mistake could cause countless comments yet, it's my pleasure to accept all these criticism just to speak my minds for it just did made me wonder how something that should help everyone build connection with God became the reason of the worsening division the religion. How important really is religion that when it becomes the topic, people turn from listeners to infallible and goofy in listening to other's beliefs??? Is it important than building relationship with God? Which of the two really is on the top of the list when only the faith matters??These are some of the questions that reign in our minds and confuse most of us about the connection and differences between the two. For clearer perspective, let me share to you this dictionary definition of the word religion, "religion is a particular system of beliefs in

0

12

I CATAINGAN MUNICIPAL COLLEGETHE EAGLE

"The greatest religion is to be true to your own nature. Have faith in yourselves." -Swami Vivekananda

God and the activities connected with this system," it's quite obvious that it focuses on the beliefs, activities and other related doctrines without giving emphasis on the relation one should have in order to communicate with God, while the dictionary meaning of relation is "the contact with someone and in which way they are connected", apparently, it emphasizes "personal connection" with the Supreme being that can change your own perspective about everything. About the question for the importance of religion in building relationship, here's my answer, religion used to be the first thing that motivates someone to grow spiritually yet it underwhelms me that it became one of the reasons which divides so many people, races, tribes and nations. How I wish that this present situation is just like the case of the circle of friends I have, though we all possess different religion as well as beliefs and of course stand firm to what we believe right, our relation still stay strong and remain united for we never forget to respect one another. I guess respect is all we need so that we can still believe in something we believed in without offending someone.

I think most of the people just give too much devotion to their religion and chooses to be religious rather than Godly. They do things to take good care of traditions rather than pleasing God and most of all ignorantly offend someone by letting them feel that they're no longer part of the group simply because they shift from one denomination to another. Too lame but there's still more instances that we ignorantly hurt people just like teasing them of wearing skirts or carrying bible and by telling them that they have weak foundation from their former beliefs because of transferring to particular congregation they believe could help them prosper their faith in God I hope realization could tap you in the shoulder. And for the last question about what's first in the list, for me its relation for in the first place, only relation to God can offer salvation through Jesus that neither yours nor mine or anyone else's religion could, secondly, relation enables us to live in one accord with our omnipotent God while religion creates division and misunderstanding and lastly, relation keeps us humble and godly which God wants us to be, while religion gives us pride and make us too

religious knowing that our own religion never get wrong. Religion can be considered essential when it serves as God's instrument to change someone's misdeeds and waters the withered sprout of faith to let it grow and bear fruits but relation still and will always still be the first in the essence's list for stories and lives of all the people in the bible were made, organized and manifested by God to portray the importance of relation,40 writers of 66 book that composed the new and old testament did inspired by the Holy Spirit not to propose religion but to give instruction in building personal relation, and the last but not the least, JESUS CHRIST didn't died on the cross to give us religion but to make strong relation between the creation and the Creator possible until the doom's day. Whatever your religion is, as long as you have that faithful relation with our Heavenly Father, you will never be worried about your eternal destiny for it is said that one cannot offer true worship to God if he don't have personal relation with Him through His Son, therefore worshipping and praising Him without even accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior are all in vain. •

en& arassment of student writers; actual censorship of editorial content; closure of the student publication; suspension and expulsion of student writers and editors; libel charges against student journalists are but few cases and dilemma that a campus journalist and publication might encounter. For this reason, Republic Act No. 7079 also known as "Campus Journalism Act of 1991" or "an act providing for the development and promotion of campus journalism and for other purposes" was enacted to genuinely uphold campus press freedom. Campus journalism isn't as difficult & complicated as carpentry, teaching, or architecture but its job description goes like catching and swimming in with a whale in the deepest seas. The journey of a writer is risky. There may be an instance when we are being hit by a car of hard criticisms or fell into the dark manhole of the issue until we cross the finish line where we are able to satisfy the readers' craving for the truth. Such truth can be the exposure of the administrations' dust or a dark shadow behind a person. As such, student journalist could be a subject for revenge (and redemption of a lost dignity for example).

Public Ad etizens - students, professionals or even an ordinary person who are using a device via internet connection are all cravince for a Wi-Fi access. Internet created a huge impact among us. It's also become our way of socializing with other people. Facebook! Twitter! Instagram! These are but few ways of saying "I need a Wi-FI access." Well, I bet your fairy godmother heard what you wish for through House Bill No. 1550 "an act providing free public wireless internet accessibility in national government offices, municipal halls and provincial capitols, state universities and colleges, public parks and plazas, public hospitals and public transportation terminals by installing wireless internet connections in their buildings and providing funds thereof", also known as the "Free Public Wi-Fi Act". The Bill was introduced by Kabataan Partylist Representative Ferry L. Ridon who believed in the democratic access to the internet. Given the said promotion, everyone has the chance to enjoy Wi-Fi access provided in Section 4 of the bill which states that " No restrictions, in the form of passwords and other similar mechanisms, shall be imposed with regard to

access to the free public wi-fi network. Only in cased where there is a clear and present security or technical risk that cannot be remedied through normal technical solutions shall the administration or management of the government office, state university or college, public park, public hospital or public transportation terminal limit access to the network through the use of passwords, which shall be easily provided to the public upon request by individuals. No fee may be charged for access to the free public wi-fi network." The amount needed for the immediate implementation of proposed law will be obtained from available funds of the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) or the overall savings under the current national budget or General Appropriations Act stated in Section 7 of the said bill. Furthermore, if ever the bill gets the go signal from the Senate, the Congress and the Office of the President, country's Internet Service Provider (ISP) like PLDT, Smart, Sun and Globe will be tapped to lease their service that is cheaper since the government will be the one to pay a fixed monthly rate. Starts with You at does the common human do? We work and seize every opportunity to change our world into something happier, but the question is: Do you really want change? This is a kind of question that bothers everyone.

W:

16

I CATAINGAN MUNICIPAL COLLEGETHE EAGLE

Sometimes, I can't deny the fact that even me pondered on this kind of question. Indeed! Everything here on earth is fickle. So, nobody could say that they don't want changes. To both rich and poor, great and lowly alike, God has placed a responsibility: to grow and to lift the self upward toward heaven. Made in God's image, we are not intended to remain poor and lowly. You, of all God's creatures, have been endowed with the power to grow. You are the architect of your own destiny. For this big task, God has equipped us with intellect and certain power with which to lift ourselves from this lowly earth to lofty heights. No matter who or what we are, God expects us to make good use of our God-given talents- in self-improvement. And besides, according to Mahatma Ghandi, "If you want change, be the change you want to be." This is simply because CHANGE starts with OURSELVES. All we need to do is mingle with people who can direct our eyes, and lift our hearts to the stars. We will then discover in them eternal and noble lessons of greatness. Also, we need to emulate all the good things that our heroes did during their period of existence. And if possible, let's change our environment. Reach out for a higher level to direct our mind, explore yourselves to things of lasting beauty like music, flowers, books, pictures and others. Most of all, let's not forget to pray fervently because with the faith in the Divine Providence and the courage in our hearts, all things are possible even change. •

remember a certain instructor of mine who tried catching her students who haven't passed their projects yet. But I think she was overly kind and my classmates were (of course) exceedingly abusing it. I also remember (tragicai!YJ several instructors who are completely dreadful such as teachers who summarized the course in just one meeting by giving a few on the spot formulas and examples, without any further elucidations. Cool, right? But is it still cool when you see that students, taking the same subject from other teachers can understand fully the topics - what better can you do? Is it cool when she laughs and hoots like an owl and gets angry like a witch as well? I don't think so. She didn't even let us jot down notes and wanted us to take in everything she said in our exhausted brains. I also had a teacher who delights in failing her students and getting a 3.0 from her makes you fortunate. I don't know why she loves to give failing grades. It doesn't look fun and appealing. My guess is that she wants her subject to look tough, but the image she creates spells "terror" & "disrespect". Or perhaps, failing students, d1e way promodizers giver flyers, is her style of boasting her ego her self-worth. I had also an instructor, who often came late. It doesn't look good. We actually pay you for you to teach us but unfortunately you didn't!

I

Dullness is another characteristic of a teacher that most students don't really like. (Sir, mqy I rediscuss the topid) A boring but kind teacher is tolerable. In a case like that, I would really try hard to keep myself awake. A boring but cruel teacher is DETESTABLE!!! Is it a teacher's fault if he is too uninteresting? Well, I can't tell (NO COMMENTO But it doesn't matter if he is a live storyteller or a monotonous pastor. What matters most is that he shares his knowledge to the best of her abilities (if there is). But what if these instructors continue to teach in a very heardess manner? What if generations receive the education and marks that they do not deserve? What a pity for us, people starving for seemingly unattainable wisdom. I personally think that a fellow student can impart me more information about a particular topic than an instructor who gives me the feeling that he is known to be the students "BAD LUCK". Admittedly, some instructor here in our institution, be they the most or least must need to undergo this so-called intensive retooling wherein teachers must have a rigorous retraining on how to teach efficiendy and effectively so that we, the students, may receive the quality of education that our parents have been working hard to pay for our tuition fees in and

out of the school year and that we will be equipped upon graduation with the enough expertise necessary for the competition in the real world and that the knowledge that is meant to be shared and shall not be wasted. I firmly believe that a true and passionate teacher is one who thinks about what his students think about. He wants his subjects to learn by helping them do so (NOT FOR CONIRIBUTION POUCY). They are the solid foundations of the unknown but certainly bright future. Despite their different status in life and society, they themselves are acknowledged as equal counterpart of existence regardless of how great or small their contributions are ... their exuberance is one thing they share and an evident of their unity and participation in the society.

Column One question in mind occurs, on what REALLY is the youth's greatest participation in society-building and image-molding. Simple as the word HOPE coined by the great Dr. Jose Rizal referring to the young, the youth is the epitome of a budding flower that is not yet identified until it blooms and showers the fragrance into a beauty it is meant to be. The youth dwell on the life they are born with, but always follow a distinct path of life along the journey and live where it would lead them to be what the youth can do today without the weight of pressure is "dream", dream freely of everything and shape your future with it, then, the realization of that very dream becomes the legacy for the next youth.

eing in college is fun for some and a struggle for most of us. Students face a range of predicaments and difficulties before they reach for the diploma. Here are stories of some students with different challenges encountered in the pursuit of their dreams.

Lfe is beautiful when this chinita came out of the world in June 22, 1979 and was welcomed by the city of Marikina with a smile. She is the eldest (father) of Medardo Diaz Bautista and Nida Corro Bautista and was practically raised in Cataingan. She spent the first three years in elementary at Potenciano A. Abejero Elementary School and transferred to Sacred Hearts School in Rodriguez,Rizal where she also finished her high school. She took up BS Accountancy and Law at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines but the environment of the activists in the campus and the difficulty of accounting subjects made her transfer to then AMA Computer College (now AMA University) and took up BS Computer Science this time. She never finished her second course because her father got sick and she needs to help her family with the finances. She went to Japan and worked there as a singer, factory worker, and an all-around hotel staff. It 20

was hard, yes. Everyone thought that going to abroad is easy but the gold rush is truly not that simple. One has to adopt to the culture, the climate, the language, the food, etc. and the hardest part? Being alone and away from the family that used to be an inch away. But this woman is a born fighter and survived four years in the land of the Japs. She came back in the year 2007 with her kid and enrolled in CMC in the year 2010. Her experiences had made her stronger. Her family served as her inspiration to continue fighting .she believes that positive thinking and the way we perceive things affects our judgments and our ways. Her beliefs pushed her up and finally graduated as a cum laude last march. Now, as a part of the CMC faculty, she expects to have good experiences. Her exposure to the teachinglearning process will be another weapon for her to be used against the real battle out there. It will be her key to success. Knowledge when put into action and theories when put into practice is always the best combination for a good teaching career. Lastly, she wants to let us know that we should strive harder. We have to finish our studies as both a weapon and key, not just to success, but to survive.

Cover Story

~red A woman who laughs a lot- that is how I personally describe her. We came from PAAES and CNHS yet I really don't know her that much. She is someone from high school who wears her wrist watch on her ankle and the other one on her wrist (thank God it's not her anklet on her wrist) . That is how I remembered her. She was born on January 26, 1990 and the only child of now deceased Jose Tamayo and Salud Abilong. She grew up in the arms and care of her aunt, Gina Tamayo-Mendoza. What made her belong to the group is that because she is not a typical "model" student everyone would look up to. Im not saying that she's not worth it, she's someone who your mom would describe as a bad influence but I tell you, there is really more to her than what meets your eyes. She first set foot on tertiary at University of San Jose Recoletos in Cebu taking up BS Accountancy. After a year, she found herself enrolled in Osmeiia Colleges in Masbate City taking up Business administration. The school's system as described by her is "unfair and discriminatory" and for the third time, she transferred. She practiced practicality and enrolled in her hometown's pride, the CMC. She says she's a little bit of a good and bad student. She drinks a lot, yes. You can see her singing in the Karaoke of 4 77 and Silverspoon but hey, she always goes to school. ''As much as possible I don't want to have absences. I party and dance with my friends but never did I took my

studies for granted. Drinking sessions can wait. I don't want to be left behind by my batchmates who now has goodpaying jobs", says Juliet. That explains it. The only struggle she had was her love life. She fell for the wrong guy and I know that we all know how much it hurts to give everything of yourself to someone who you thought was the one. That time, she was depressed but her good friends and her pet, Red Horse never left her side and helped her get back up. She graduated from our school on the year 2013 and just passed the Civil Service Professional Career Exams on April. It was a moment to cry for her guardian and an assurance for her future.

Different students coming from different places with different stories to tell yet one ultimate goal: to finish college. No matter how we hunger for success, we should not forget to enjoy the little things in front of us. Life is short. Shit happens and then you die. Let me end this with a line from Miley Cyrus : "not about how fast we get there, not about what's waiting in the other sideit's the climb." JANUARY - JUN E 2014

ost in the middle of the crowd of students, teachers, Cataingeiios, aliens and mutants alike, we bid goodbye to our vocal cords as we screamed and cheered as the host called out candidate number 2. In a war like this, where who has the loudest screams matters, we came prepared; our voice boxes in condition to cheer, and our hope and faith in her, soaring. She doesn't dress up like Anne Curtis and doesn't paint herself like the cover girls. She would just put on a shirt, a pair of jeans, ballet flats, and Poof! No she didn't become Koko Crunch. She's tall and fair and would laugh like there's no tomorrow - not minding if it makes her look unclassy and unsophisticated. It is just the way she is - simply simple. Coming from a broken family, she managed not to lose composure and faith despite all the pain. At a young age she experienced and lived with the consequences of being in a broken family. She's been transferring schools during her secondary and finally graduated at Ilawod High School. Without any help from her father, she struggled to find sponsors to pursue college - and is now in 4th year as one of Mayor Kho's scholars.

Just like most of the girls, she dreams of having a crown on top of her head. So when her boyfriend finally allowed her to join Miss CMC, she was more than happy and got even happier when she took home the prestigious crown, being the best in swimwear, long gown. Even though she has a lot of supporters, there are still those who don't believe that she has "it". These haters tried to degrade her through gossips and trashtalks but as they say, "You can't please everyone", so life goes on. This Capricorn is unstoppable. "People will always be like that. No matter how good you are to them, they will still have something against you" she said. She doesn't care anymore; she's just doing her best. As a BSED English student, she is good in grammar, writing, and is witty. She eats almost anything without minding if it adds pounds to her body. She's not conscious about having fats. The more fats she has, the merrier she gets. "I'm happily inlove for 5 years, with my boyfriend

who never fails to support me in every aspect and endeavor of my life. He's the one who wishes nothing but the best for me - the one who's pushing me through. Aside from my mother, grandma, and brother, he is my inspiration", she says. She is a girl of optimism - one trait the youth must maintain. Happiness

Beyond Lenses

by: JulietUrsabia

orne people today are super addicted to lenses, lenses that capture images. Wherever they are, whatever they do, no one forgets to take the perfect moments into images. No one forgets to take a selfie. The Urban dictionary defines selfie as a strange phenomenon in which the photographer is also the subject of the photograph in a subversive twist on the traditional understanding of the photography. Usually conducted because the subject cannot locate the suitable photographer to take the photo; simply put as "taking pictures of yourself." Selfies are often casual and are typically taken either with a camera held at arm's length or in a mirror. We can notice the arm of the person holding out the camera to capture herself/ himself at the right angle for a better result. The art at arm's length. This is usually done by people who are very obsessed in taking pictures of themselves at the very hour - especially when they are lazy or shy on asking some to take

the photo or when there's no one around and they have no choice but to do it by themselves, perhaps when alone in a shower room wanting to take a photo with a new soap given by special someone. What we love about selfie is that we then do a second thing after making them. We make them public, "which is something like art", says Geoffrey Batchen. It's something that gives us satisfaction. In the year 2005, a photographer named Jim Krause discussed the term selfie, although photos in selfie genre predate the widespread use of the term. Before Facebook existed, as the dominated online social network, selfies are particularly common in My Space. Self-portrait before are more formal, usually taken by others from distance, but today, front facing camera made it better. .. or worse. The term selfie became more popular in the year 2012 as the Time Magazine considered selfie as one of the lazy words of the year. Young people are very fond of taking their self-portraits and post it on social media. Popular among youngsters, it is cause addiction and negative impact on them. Some people spend hours in taking a perfect selfie, post it on Face book, Twitter, and Instagram and put a perfectly-made caption, which is sometimes not quiet related

to the photo! Actually, it takes 4 7 times to get a perfect selfie! Well, everyone has a good idea of what makes a good selfie. A metal health expert, Dr. Panpimol Wipolakorn, claim that posting photos to seek approval or likes from peers is normal human nature. Approval and positive comments are rewards! But the rewards have varying emotional effects on each individual. Some people are happy sharing photos and getting few likes while others expect as many likes as possible and become addicted being liked. Many health departments in the world have warned those obsessed with this trend that it could have bad impact on their life and work. Early this year, an article from Adobochronicles.com shocked many people. It is said that the Americas Psychiatric Association considered selfie as a mental disorder. It is classified during the annual board of directors meeting in Chicago. The name of the mental disorder is called selfitis and is define as the obsessive compulsive desire to take photos of one's self and post them on social media to make up for the loss and fill a gap of intimacy. It is said that there are three levels of the disorder.

o Borderline Selfitis: taking photos of one's self at least three times a day but not posting them on social media. o Acute Selfitis: taking photos at least three times a day and posting each of the photos on social media. o Chronic Selfitis: Uncontrollable urge to take photos of one's self round the clock and posting the photos on social media more than six times a day. However, it is very unwelcome to all Filipinos especially those from Makati and Pasig, Philippines. In March 2014, the Time Magazine ranks to top 100 "selfiest" cities in the world. Makati, Pasig, and Cebu belong to the first ten selfiest. And that makes the Philippines as the center of selfie. TOP TEN SELFIEST CITIES IN THE o o o o o o o o o o

Makati and Pasig City, Philippines Manhattan, New York Miami, Florida Anaheim and Santa Ana, California PetallingJaya, Malaysia Tel Aven, Israel Manchester, England Milan, Itlay Cebu, Philippines George Town, Malaysia

Now, it's something that tore my heart apart, but finding that the news was just a hoax, it felt like Jack Dawson didn't really died in Titanic! Yes! Good news! The story from the Abodo Chronicles

is untrue on virtually every level. The APA did not brand selfie-taking a mental disorder. Or on its doubt about the page, the Adobo Chronicles declares itself to be 'your source of up-to-date unbelievable news. Everything you read on this site is based on facts, expect for lies." So now, we know where's this going. But truly, taking selfies and posting it on social media could affect people's thoughts especially when getting a few likes and receiving bad comments, from friends, that are offensive. It can lose self-confidence and people can have a negative attitude towards themselves or their body. What a person need is balance. To stop becoming a selfie addict, a person should pay attention to people and things around them. Exercising, movie watching, and traveling with family and friends can help. Narcissism is the real thing. Just do what makes you happy but know your limitations. You may get painful criticism from other people. Just like making faces and post it. It may show that you have extremely low self-steamed and you need people to comment, to tell you how hot or pretty you are. In reality, they think that you just look desperate for attention and no matter how attractive you might be you still look pathetic. Duck face or kissy face can make people think you are retarded. Just be careful in publicizing your photos. The important thing is that it satisfies what you need, a little happiness. •

Review I MOVIE

IS Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up. - Pablo Picasso Š taarezameenpar.com

A

teacher is not just someone who teaches, he inspires, and he shares learning, knowledge, and lessons not just the ones which are found in the books but including life. This movie is about how a teacher pushes a student to learn. It is about a boy Ishaan who suffers from dyslexia (a variable often familial learning disability involving difficulties in acquiring and processing language that is typically manifested by a lack of proficiency in reading, spelling and writing.) This 8-year old is a third grade

student who is in his second year on the same level already. Ishaan is always punished and sent out of the classroom because he does nothing while everybody is busy doing school works. He cannot read English and one time he was called to read a paragraph and he just blabbered aloud and he was laughed at and again, was sent out. His parents are disappointed of his marks and test papers which he hasn't made them sign and his books all red with corrections. His handwriting is poor and so is his spelling. He interchanges d with b, and h with t. "The letters are dancing", as what he describes and his imagination wanders from simple math equation to earth attacking Pluto. "No fear" is how he described wandering the streets after the first period one time after he was sent out. There, we can see a child with eyes wide open to the realities of the world. He made his Dada write him an absent note which was later discovered by his father.

a

pvr picture• pr.sents L...--- a- ami:r khall productions"

Greatly disappointed, his parents decided to take him into a boarding school so he can learn the value of discipline and would somehow learn better. But it never happened. The boy grew with negative judgment, and was traumatized with disappointment, neglect, and eventually lost his self esteem. He never talked anymore. He shows no progress. The school principal and his teachers thought he wouldn't even finish the term until their art teacher was transferred to New Zealand and they had a new one. Nimkubh was not like the rest. He danced and played the flute on their first meeting and the kids seemed to like him but his co-teachers disliked his approach. He wondered why Ishaan isn't like the others kids who play and enjoys a lot. He scanned Ishaan's books and there he saw that the kid is having so much trouble with spelling and writing. He visited ishhan's home and talked to his parents about his condition. There he also saw Ishaan's painting from the kid's interpretation and perspective.

Every child is special. This teacher believes so. He never gave up on Ishaan and taught and inspired him to learn. He used Da Vinci, Einstein, and Picasso to serve as an inspiration to Ishaan. Little by little, he improved. There was an art fair in school and everybody participated for in art they can express their emotions towards life. On that day, Ishaan woke up earlier than everybody else, n obody knew where he had gone and Nimkubh got a little worried. He finally came and started doing his art. Two best paintings had a tie, and they chose Ishaan's as the winner and the cover for the yearbook. it shows a typical kid's life and the disappointment of a parent when they see that their kid will be left behind. The movie is about a teacher who had the same predicament as his student. What I like about the movie is that it is presented in a way that everyone would laugh and be touched at the same time. The most exciting part is when someone finally had the guts to make

the student learn. It was so dramatic when he had the trauma. I found myself in tears while watching the mov1e. As teachers, we should not give up on our students. Yes their will be times that we'd go crazy over pupils who cant memorize the ABC or the multiplication table, surely we'll lose patience at times, but we are not a teacher unless we can make someone learn. Kids with dyslexia needs more than guidance, they need understanding. Parents and teachers need to be patient and to pay them special attention. Every child is special. He might not learn as quickly as others but with the proper guidance and motivation, they will expand their talents. Let the kids be kids. For this few days of kidding around will soon be over. "These days of childhood will never come back", a line from the movie. "Having a kid carry the burden of your ambition is worse than child labor", says Nimkubh Aamir Khan is indeed a genius. •

Now I'm tired, I cried no more I kept myself silent, while lying on the floor Suddenly, I heard a golden voice T'was the voice that I waited to hear The voice that could calm my fears The voice that could stop my tears And I realized, I'm weak for I'm wounded I'm blind for I am so wicked

I'm deaf for I have failed to listen In my heart, I didn't seek Him That realization came all to my mind I have been crying and shouting too loud I failed to hear His voice calling me I have a death faith, and my sins made me unable to see The love of Christ that guided me all the way Thy heart was broken for it was my choice I followed my own desires and neglected His voice But now I know, that I can hold nothing I acknowledge Him; He's my life, my everything. He comforted and caressed me He showed me the right way He made me understand about His unfathomable love He leaded me how to live my life. Like the clay, I was smashed to be on shape Like the grape, pruned to separate from the bitter taste. So that I could be the person God wished me to be In His holy presence, I could be then stand worthy And with all my heart, I will sing joyfully. •

A memoir should have some uplifting quality, inspiring or illuminating, and that's what separates a life story that can influence other people.

ore often than not, in a group gathering we share tales and stories; whether it be yours or that of others. Tales of failures and successes, tales of what happened or is to happen, even tales that seem unbelievable. And, as most of human kind have, tales of endeavors of those who are lucky enough to overcome life's most severe deprivation of all times -poverty. Sharing a tale to a friend or a stranger can be a worthwhile activity provided you tell a truthful story. You can never know, your story may inspire others even if you seemed in misery while you are still in it. Just as the saying goes; "It is wise to learn from your own mistakes, but it is wiser to learn from the mistakes of others." A fairytale has an ending, " ... and they lived happily ever after," but a man's real story does not end there. Rather, it's a series of stories - the end of one story is the beginning of another. My life's story may not be complete without your story, or his, or hers, or theirs. But then, stories may never end even after our lives do. If God's stories ended with Adam's death, or Moses', or Jesus', do you think there will be salvation? However you may try to end your life, your story will never end there, nor will it ever be.

-Mitch AlbornMEMORIES - they are stories of the past; their past, your past, my past. Lke fairies and witches of fairytales, memories can either be good or bad, however you make them. They define us for what we are now. Some say you must forget your bad memories, if you wish to move on with your life, and live like they never happened. But I say it will bring you no harm to keep them, hand in hand with the good ones. This does not mean living through them again. I only mean that you reflect on them, and learn from them. Someday somehow, you will be able to relate these stories and say, ''Ah! I am glad I made it through that way, for I am now where I should stay." DREAMS - they are stories of what to happen; the stories of the future. They are the stories you are working for now. They are the stories you are

trying to live, and tell. Some define it as success - the end of all endeavors, the fruit of sacrifices, the sunshine after the rain - the goals to be achieved, the wealth to be attained, and the love to be gained. Dreaming is never wrong, having no dream is. Finding where this life can lead us to looking for life's purposes has always been part of man's destiny- and story. So start making your dreams. Start living for them and your life's story will never be in ruins. Failures and problems will only be challenges for, "The future depends to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." But what is best about having a story is that you make it today. We live in it now. It is today when dreams become reality and memories are being created. It is today we come to know which story ended, which story began. It is today we make and tell stories at the same time, until tomorrow never comes. And if you wish to change the plot of your story, you can only do it today because it is only today that you can live your life the way you choose to be. Let me tell you a story - once upon a time, there was me and you, and them. Like everybody. I have my share of failures and successes. Today they are memories, and today I have a dream to be the best. Now I live to tell it, that's why I'm writing this. That's why I'm telling you this. • JANUARY - JUN E 2014

Diary of a by: AmeryDean

t was two in the morning. The darkness adds a sense of sadness to everything awake. Outside, the rain is falling. The wind is cold, freezing my heart that is colder than the atmosphere. The silence deafens and the situation paralyzes me. I was in the couch, he was lying next to me, cuddling me in his frame. His arms enveloped my thin body. His face is on my nape. I could feel his heartbeat as he breathes on me. He is terrified, I know. I can feel the tension and his fear. I shut my eyes because I don't wanna see him so miserable. I know I caused him misery and the guilt pains me. "Tell me, don't you love me anymore? Please" ... He asked me the same question for the Nth time. We broke up - not because I don't love him but because t'was the best thing to do. I felt that I couldn't love him more, that I couldn't give back everything. He had given me everything and all I had given him was pain. He doesn't deserve to suffer, he doesn't deserve me. Yet here he is demanding an explanation. I owe him one but I don't wanna talk. Every word I'll utter will break our hearts. He wants another chance but for me, it would just prolong my agony. It would just postpone his pain, his heartbreak. "Please, answer me please. I'll take any answer. I just need to know." He demands an answers. My eyes are shut yet I thought I saw him cry. He hugged me tighter. This

time, his fear of losing me, of losing someone he loves conducted through his veins to mine. I couldn't handle my tears anymore, before I know it, he is wiping my eyes wet from tears. He kissed me in my forehead and whispered how much he loved me. I loved him, too. I just can't put it into words and actions. This had gotta end. I kept my eyes shut and gather all my strengths and answered: "NO" It was like a bomb. Suddenly I felt death in the room. I felt hopelessness, and pain- as if Pandora had lifted the lid of the box she wasn't supposed to open. The silence lingered. I know, he is badly hurt. My eyes still closed, he slowly let go of me. I heard his footsteps heading towards the door. I opened my eyes and I saw a man walking away from a battle he had just lost. He left the door open and vanished into darkness. I felt the cold wind. I pushed my back to the wall. I looked at the door he just walked out of. This time I know he's not corning back. It was never like he had to leave just to buy food. That very moment, I know it was goodbye. I stared at the door he left opened for a purpose until I felt so cold and once again, I wished I never pushed him away. Once again, I wished he was there to warm me. •

was riding on a tricycle with some friends for a trip one sunny afternoon. It was a long, tiring but enjoyable trip. As our ride advanced farther, we would constantly jolt as hills after hills came into sight. Suddenly I realized; "Lfe is a bumpy ride." I looked sideways, only to see the horizons extending ahead, disappearing behind. They seemed near yet far and unreachable. This words in my head tumbled; "Widen your horizons, let go of the pastA clearer picture waits in the last." As road signs would appear, this was my thought that for you I'd share; "Be aware of your limits, Understand precautions to meet" Sometimes, smoke and dust would sting my eyes and nose that I would sniff and shed a tear. It was when I remembered; "It's okay to cry, but still go on and try." Moments later, we stopped at a crossroad. We were confused, which way shall we pass? It dawned to me like a blast; "In life, there are choices and decisions to make;

I

Do choose correctly to avoid regrets and mistakes." Then a friend pointed on one direction and said, "This is the way," and led us all along. A thought, then, took a form; ''Along your route is Someone who helps and be your guide, Grasp His hand and hold then no matter which side goes your ride. Onward we traveled but after awhile,

Life is, indeed, a journey not a destination. another friend asked, ''Are we nearer?" "Not yet," was the reply, "It's still quite far." That's when I discover; "Seek and you shall find the answer It may not be a 'yes', but wait and persevere." The summer's blazing heat is over our heads, yet we ignored it. It seemed to burn our skin and hurt our eyes. A thought flicked in surprise; "Look on the brighter side yet don't forget the truth No matter how it hurts and you will reap its fruit."

There are times that we had to rest to catch our breath beneath some shady trees. This truth revealed itself like a bliss; "Sometimes you got weary, So rest but never stop your journey." It was mid-afternoon when we finally reached our destination. At last! We were welcomed by hospitable hands and they pampered us on our visit. It was worth celebrating, I could simply say. This thought came to me about that memorable day. "Success is happiness, happiness is success If you succeed, learn to share it with, And you'll be happy indeed, And if you're happy, share it with somebody, So you'd feel like you succeed." We spent an overnight there but when morning came, we packed our things and head back home. It is why I had this conclusion; "Where' er you go, how far you've reached, remember this all alongYou'll never find much comfort as there is at home." •

could be warm; I could be cold, I could be hard; I could be soft, I could be used for evil; I could be used for good, I can grasp; I can mold, I can let you go; I can hold on for long, I could carry things; I am needed by all human beings, I am important to a painter; I am essential to a potter, I carry the thing which is in sword is mightier; I am the strength of every writer. Men show adoration by kissing me; Women find comfort and shelter in me, I am ornamented with bangles and braces; In my fingers, I wear a ring that stands for a promise. I could be fierce; but I can wipe tears, I am used for touch; to make you feel loved, I could be weary; so you have to take of me, I am part of your body; I am an emblem of unity. <IIIII

Make Me Forget

At Dawn Break

by: MeloJeanlazaro

by: Mar C. Lawis

~ Make me forget the way you touch The way it's giving me mild heart attacks. Make me forget your sweetest kiss That makes my heart so diabetic. Make me forget your warm caresses, Which I shared with your mistresses. Make me forget how passionate we were And how I smile whenever you're near. Make me forget how much I loved you I don't want to have feelings of deja vu. Make me forget why love was bitter Make me forget you until forever. Make me forget your space in my heart Make me regret for making you a part Of my very own, once happy fairy-tale Which turned out to be a witch's spell. Make me forget how you lied to me And the promises we kept under the apple tree Make me forget the hurt that broke me So I'll only treasure our good memories ......

.... Tiny waves rippled and danced To their fun and ecstacy, Under the somber and murky sky One day at dawn break through. The fishermen blazed and breezed In their treasured mossy boats, In the turbulent dumb blue sea Of fortune and misfortune. Heay rains unleashed and poured, Lghtning sparked and thunder roared, The tiny waves swelled and rocked, The blue sea brayed and boggled. The boats swayed and swung Amid the surging heartless waves, The fishermen braved and weathered The dawn break through. The fishermen know no big waves, Nor heavy rains or tempestuous sea, Nor sparking lights or roaring thunder, But a blade of life at sea ......

la rni amigos, arnigas! Welcome to Cataingan Municipal College! Home of LET Passers and training ground of future teachers. New and old, young and young at hearts, first timers and second coursers, welcome welcome. (Clap clap). I hope you stay a little longer and wait! Stop, look, listen. Shhhhhhh! Look! We have a new blue gate in front! But if you were here on summer, you could have backed off! I mean went to the backgate because it was not yet opened for strangers (and friends?). Thanks God PIA's project is now available for use.Q New rooms! Finally, it's right behind the

president's office and is now super available for use (but there's no chairs and board yet--any donations, please?). Our institution who is swarming with hopefuls deserves this, right? New perimeter fence! Wow. It surely adds security and beauty to CMC. New canopy! Yes. Everyone is thankful to the CBSG for having it materialized. We now enjoy its shade on a sunny day and shelter on the rainy ones. (But hey, can't it be a little longer, please?) Listen: What students has to say.. "CMC has become a progressive school. More improvements soon!" (Yeah, we all really hope so.) "Maganda. Sana mararni pang changes."

"Sana pati ang pamamalakad ay magbago din." (Something fishy.) "When will the gate be opened? Our parents paid for it, right?" (Yeah we know. It's now open. The interview was conducted on summer) Annnnnsssssaaaaaaaaaaaaavvvveeeeee eeeeeeh?! STOP! What are the things that haven't improved in CMC? Look! The enrolment process is still a NFA-line long. It's like 1 versus a thousand with 20 referees yelling at each other and complaining about how slow the process is. Some even said that marrying is easier than enrolling. Oh my God. Yes that's true. But the MARRIAGE itself will be harder. I'd rather be waiting in line while some has "kapit" inside and I can practically inhale all the vinegar-like odors of some who sweated much and forgotten to put tawas in their precious armpits. CMC, on my experience (I had been to MANY schools already) has the most breath-taking (literally) and buwis-buhay enrolment ever. But we should not complain for here, we enjoy cheaper tuition fees and quality education and it's a rare opportunity to have these two collide. The Campus Comfort Rooms. It comforts the ones inside but kills the many more outside. It's been emitting radiation of unwanted fragrance since time immemorial. You need to cover your nose every time you pass by but if your class is in room 10, well, you're gonna need all the GOOD LUCK you can get. Classroom and administration facilities. Have you seen our invisible chairs? Of course, not. They're not there anyway. Maybe they were taken by aliens! Just kidding. They are on the other rooms because students made them mobile chairs because of the unavailability on the other rooms. You see, it's a sign that a lot goes to school that is why we lack chairs. A round of applause to those who choose to stand in class during discussion rather than cut classes. Contribution overload. Just like the ice cream, it is overloading with different this and that for the project of this and that. When we see the project come

into reality, we say: hay salamat kay an pangsura ko kunta adi gina pasirungan ko na. its good to have projects but some has the artistry to make the said project a big "drawing" leaving the students "nga-nga". School maintenance. Cleanliness and orderliness seems a rare sight on the campus. The working student couldn't handle all the cleaning stuff so hey, my dear, handsome and beautiful CMCians, please have the capital D in your forehead---Discipline. When you enter a disordered room, arrange the chairs and pick up trashes so that it will be more conducive for learning. It's not about being 'sipsip', its called patriotism and being a good citizen. Administration staff. Ok. I don't have bad experiences (yet) but I hear murmurs and complaints that it takes 48 years before one could have his TOR. Maybe it's the palakasan system or MAYBE because the student itself is so lazy to follow up his papers in the office. Just saying. Lsten! Students, here you go.

"It is so hard." (huuuwaaat?) "Be responsible and be fair" (we will, soooooooooon) "Dapat iprioritize ang hindi scholar." (Ouch to my fellow scholars) "Minimize contribution. Wa na ko'y kwarta pang-Dota." (grrrrrrrrr) "Maintain cleanliness!" (Start with yourself, please) Annnnnnnnnssssaaaaaavvvvveeeeeee eeh? Watj asayyyyyyyyyyyy? Truth hurts. People criticize our flaws because they want betterment. Change is vital but it should first take place in us. We can start by breaking the clocks of Filipino Time and transmuting time into gold. Patience is a virtue; learn to wait for your turn. Discipline is a must in everything. We will soon be professionals and professionals are welldisciplined individuals. Where else could we practice it better than in our homes? So long CMCians. Batu-bato sa langit ang tamaan pangit. Joke. Umilag ka, at magbago na rin. •

oever takes the issue of free Jllilllightly must ave been acquainted with the arguments egarding this matter presented by different theorists from different periods since he was 12. I say 12 because it's when an average kid undergoes the "formaloperational stage," a phase when, according to Jean Piaget, he starts considering abstract ideas, reasoning about hypothetical possibilities, and deducing new concepts. However, I can't even identify one person who does this. From the Middle Ages, the time when Jean Buridan held the concept of determinism which says every event has a cause, and that, the cause being set, the event follows invariably ... Wait. No, it must be from the first period of Christian literature in Latin, around 400, the time when Saint Augustine introduced predestination in Confessions, up to our period when we become more acquainted with neurology and cognitive psychology, the question about our ability to determine our actions remains a question. Scientists, philosophers, theologians, etc., have attempted to

explain behaviour mechanically or to refute the idea of free will but none of these attempts could be patterned into law. I wonder if man would be confident enough to declare that he can live a moral and just life if nobody in our history tried to question the idea of free will, be it the absolute free Jllill, a belief that we can affect outcomes in the universe or the practicalfree Jllill, a belief that we have the chance to experience options and to experience making a choice. Be it yes or no, it would be useless because, as presented in the first paragraph, even before the grandparents of our grandparents were born, man has already been presented with a number of concepts that negate the idea of free will. Genetic determinism, one of the variations of determinism, seems to be easily accepted by a high school student who just encountered Gregor Mendel. I used to believe that with the pre-arranged set of my genes, I have no more freedom to choose how I would look like, how I would think, and how I would behave in varied conditions. Well,

as some critics say, blaming the genes for certain behaviours is unreasonable. How can it be unreasonable when a defective allele for the MAO (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) gene is usually identified in men with violent and criminal behaviour? I don't say that all men who have inherited this are all freaks. There are also studies which have recognized many men who carried this allele and never committed a violent act. I am just saying that the former proposition is not "unreasonable." A breakthrough in neuroscience had made the idea of free will even more absurd. Benjamin Lbet's studies showed that decisions to act occur 0.3 seconds and that moments of insight are detectable 8 seconds before we become conscious of them. Even the Christian Bible (a hofy book that is believed to contain eternal truth) in Titus 3:4-5 says, "Ngunit nang mahayag ang kagandahang-loob at pag-ibig ang Djyos na ating Tagapagligtas, tayoy iniligtas njya. Natamo natin ito hindi dahil sa ating mabubuting gau;a, kundi sa kmryang habag sa atin." Normally, if a man is presented with these ideas, he would

say, "If my actions are influenced l:J pi?Jsical conditions, desires, God's Jllill, things that I can't control, JiJhat is the point of living lifo af!YJilay?" "W0' should I JIJaste my time thinking Jllhich JiJqJ to go, the right path or the other, JiJhen I knou; IZl still die no matter Jllhich path I choose?" Man tends to adhere to fatalism, a belief that our choices have causes but have no effects and that we are helpless. To provoke a disbelief in free will is not my intention. I say it is without significance to consider this dilemma. Determinism versus free will? It is considered Buridan's ass. As a modern compatibilist, I support the idea that determinism can co-exist with free will. Well, I think it's easier to put things this way. Haha. We may not have control over what we should wish or want but we can still act as we wish. Even if we are bound to live and die, we are still given opportunities to live our life the way we want even amidst adversities. Even if we are bound to make mistakes, we still have the chance to cover it up with more good deeds. Isaac Bashevis Singer puts it straightforwardly, "We have to believe in free Jllill. We have no choice. " • JANUARY - JUN E 2014
