like a lot of people, this fall i was glued to Ken Burns’ 14 hour series, The Roosevelts. Thank goodness for DVR’s! Theodore Roosevelt famously said, “Get action. Do things; be sane; don’t fritter away your time; create, act, take a place wherever you are and be somebody; get action.” His 5th cousin Franklin said, “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.” Both were men who defined leadership - acting boldly, often without the support of their advisors or the people of the United States. Both presidents followed their own compass, making decisions independent of many around them. Thank goodness they did! At Prep@Pingree, we continue to act boldly. Pingree School’s inclusion of the term “access” in its Proudly Pingree Campaign for Arts, Athletics, and Access opened the door for the Power of 10 initiative which is nearing its goal. Thanks to eleven visionary donors so far, Prep@Pingree was able to name Prep@Pingree for our founding trustee, maximize enrollment to 75 students, extend the summer program throughout the academic year, and sustain funding for Pingree scholarships and related secondary school expenses such as books and transportation for the 5% of Pingree’s enrollment who are Prep@Pingree alumni. Thank you, again, for making Prep@Pingree a priority in your lives. Steve Filosa, Executive Director
For nearly 25 years, Prep@Pingree’s Founding Director Steve Filosa has been a teacher and administrator in independent schools. He serves as an advisory board member of Steppingstone Foundation’s National Partnership for Educational Access (NPEA). Mr. Filosa received his B.S. in mathematics from Tufts University and his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School. He is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association.

a yearlong program – what does that mean? It means that in addition to our traditional 5-week summer program, no longer will the final day of the summer program be full of tearful goodbyes brought on by the sudden awareness that students will not see their newly found peers and mentors for at least a year, if ever again. It means that current and past Prep@Pingree students will be more closely connected to Pingree students as partners in learning about themselves and each other. We are excited about the academic year experience that includes enrichment workshops, college tours, alumni gatherings, and round-table discussions. Partnerships are strengthened as Prep@Pingree collaborates with local community-based organizations hosting events to foster community building. As Program Director, I have the opportunity to visit middle and high school students on their campuses throughout the year to check in with them and their advisors. Initial visits have been positive as students have shared ideas for creating future cultural and academic enrichment opportunities. Paul N. Mayo, Program Director
Paul Mayo joined Prep@Pingree two summers ago after serving as Director of Diversity at New Canaan Country School in Connecticut since 1996 and teaching in the REACH Prep and Horizons Summer Student Enrichment programs for the previous 17 years. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Bucknell University and a Master’s degree from the University of Bridgeport.

THE MISSION OF PREP@PINGREE With the goal of assuring more access to high quality education, the dual mission of Prep@Pingree is to provide an ongoing academic and cultural enrichment program for talented, hardworking, middle school students predominately from underserved communities and to strengthen the Pingree School community. Through an intensive five-week summer program and supplemental year-round support, Prep@Pingree prepares admitted students for independent, parochial, and public high schools. Prep@Pingree balances rigorous academics with co-curricular experiences aimed at developing the whole student, staff members, and anyone who connects with Prep@Pingree.

ONGOING ACADEMIC AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENT Once enrolled and at no cost to them, students from our partnering organizations in Lawrence and Lynn are provided everything they need to participate in the program—round-trip transportation from Lawrence and Lynn, meals, and all school supplies. Sponsored and tuition-paying students from other communities are also invited to apply for a small number of available spaces. The summer session begins with a brunch at Pingree School for Prep@ Pingree families. As part of the program orientation, participants spend two days at Project Adventure engaged in team building activities. The program concludes with a graduation ceremony, followed by a final day trip.

These classes are followed by two hours of co-curricular activities including public speaking, interview and application workshops, swimming, arts and athletics. Each week, students take day trips within greater Boston and Essex County, including a visit to a college campus and a canoe trip on the Ipswich River.
Students spend four hours each day studying math, English, engineering design, and history in classes
Next year’s summer program will begin June 27, 2015 and end on August 1, 2015.
Upon graduation, program participants receive secondary school placement counseling and attend other activities through their eighth grade year and beyond.
