¥Pinta celebra 10 años de vida! POR DIEGO COSTA PEUSER

Director

Pinta celebrates its tenth birthday! BY DIEGO COSTA PEUSER

Director

The tenth birthday of Pinta is naturally an occasion to stop and look back on a path that has led to New York, London, and Miami, to remember the time when Pinta was nothing but one of my ideas. It took people who believed in the possibility of the first fair of modern and contemporary art from Latin America in New York, among them major figures in the art world and at prestigious institutions, collectors, businessmen, gallerists, curators, critics, a talented team, and committed sponsors. All of them believed in us and in the ambitious project we had dreamed of. I would like to thank first and foremost Pinta’s friends and partners—Tanya Brillenbourg, Sergio Aisenberg, Juan Ball, and Alfredo Ginocchio—for having been at our side as we made our way down this long road. The trust they have placed in Pinta since the beginning inspires us to reaffirm our commitment and to embrace the responsibility of working for the good of art and cultural exchange. The Latin root of the word “culture” lies in “cultivate,” and working for culture, like anything we sow, requires care, dedication, and patience, it requires making the necessary means available and creating the structure needed to meet our goal, that is, to

develop Latin American art, to expand its market, and to bring everything it has to contribute into the global system. It is an honor and a privilege for me to thank our main sponsor, EFG Capital Bank, for its steadfast support and its commitment to art and the community. I would like to thank curators Roc Laseca, Jesus Fuenmayor, and Jose Antonio Navarrete. Thanks to their pursuit of excellent contents, Pinta always stands out. Finally, I am grateful to the gallerists and artists who have chosen to participate in this platform. We are celebrating together, then, Pinta’s first ten years, with hits and misses as we have struggled to navigate different scenes and atmospheres. We celebrate above all everything we have learned that has made Pinta stronger; the fair is now a fact of life, an active and dynamic part of the art scene that keeps growing and evolving to reflect new times. We believe in the transformative mission of art and in its ability to cross borders. We believe in working passionately for something greater: planting seeds for future generations. I invite you to awake all your senses to enjoy to the fullest this wonderful experience!

Chairman EFG Capital International Corp

EFG is pleased to announce that, for the third consecutive year, we will be the main sponsor of the contemporary and modern art fair Pinta Miami, thus reaffirming our commitment to the arts. The theme of this tenth edition is Crossing Cultures; the main objective of the fair is to reflect the art market and artistic practices with a globalizing spirit that joins and interconnects an array of artistic proposals from around the world. EFG supports diverse projects that reflect the scope of our customers and employees. On this occasion, we welcome all of those who understand art as an engine of personal enrichment and as a key component of the world around us. For EFG, the fair is an opportunity to generate new ties and to expand frontiers with an interdisciplinary spirit. It is out of our belief in the exchange of ideas and in progress through education that we invite you to take part in all of this year’s Pinta activities, which offer the attending public an array of participatory experiences. Pinta Forum, for instance, is an international platform for interaction and for debate on the changing dynamics in artistic production, art history, research, publications, and art collecting in recent decades. It is with great enthusiasm that EFG invites you to visit Pinta Miami: Crossing Cultures, the tenth edition of the fair, to be held at Mana Wynwood, located in the heart of the Miami art district. We are confident it will be a riveting and unforgettable experience.

Pinta Project The concept of the artist’s edition has undergone major changes at the hands of artists and the art market. Many contemporary artists appeal to the use of mass reproduction media, but at the same time they incorporate, paradoxically, the idea of uniqueness in the reproducible object destabilizing the status of the work of art. The intention with this selection of artists is to explore this displacements and its importance in the contemporary imaginary. This section of Pinta includes the related works of Carlos Cruz-Diez, Fernando Bryce, Waltercio Caldas, BartolomĂ© Ferrando, Claudio Perna, Diego Barboza y Luis Villamizar. Cruz-Diez presents one of his Cromointerferencias, a digital animation that is made with special software and is projected into the space, intersecting with objects and people. Bryce will present an installation composed of 30 panels of images of concrete art in magazines from the mid-twentieth century and is a good example of Bryce’s “mimetic analysis” methodology. Caldas, one of the most important contemporary Brazilian artists, has produced since the beginning of his career a series of editions and multiples that are a reference for present art practices. Perna, Barboza, and Villamizar, are three pioneers of Venezuelan post-conceptualist art and each will be present with a series of photo-based works. Ferrando is a well-known poet and performance artistEscalera from Spain, worked the written andx 24.8 spoken Ronald MorĂĄn. hacia la who nada II,has 2016. FERNANDO BRYCE

LIST OF GALLERY ARTISTS

Fernando Bryce brings us the archive of the abstract world that was expanding in the heart of this city, contributing to the formation of new visual representations. Through his method of mimetic analysis, he re-produces and renews the archive he has compiled around this system of representations that drew a triangle between Paris, New York, and Buenos Aires. The meticulous copying of the original gives new life to the written word and to everything these texts and images condensed: a thousand ways to conceive of the foundations of a new world, unquestionably better than the one they sought to leave behind; in these formulations images played a role as relevant as words. By bringing this archive into the present he clearly goes beyond a simple archaeology of the past. What circulates, in latent form, is the question of where this imaginary resides in the current state of the world. Andrea Giunta

Pinta Drawing PINTA Drawing is the solo projects section of PINTA Art Fair devoted to present some

of the most remarkable contributions in contemporary drawing from Latin America and Spain. This year, the section interrogates the relationships between drawing and action, throughout the practice of five artists who have been facing some critical components of this interaction. Drawing and performing share common concerns and activate an ongoing discussion on the way we understand the complexity between body, ideas, gestures and materials of our times. Roc Laseca Curator

Pinta Photography The Meeting Places Contemporary photography is tied to the history of photography in many ways. Some photographers appropriate past images to propose new works and meanings. Others draw inspiration from the work of preceding artists at creating their visions. Sometimes, the history of the medium itself motivates comments on cultural and historical questions in recent photography. However, the most important links between the past and the present of art photography are the continuity of genres, such as landscape, portrait, and still life, and ongoing concern with subjects related to human life and feeling. This year, PINTA Photography explores some of these artistic issues at a gathering of international photography.

Constructive Interferences

EX is a non-profit organization born in 2012 and located in Spain. Its aim is to promote electronic and experimental art, support its practice, and motivate reflection on it. We focus on experimental practices that enables room for criticism about medium, and that is capable of identifying and regaining its own theoretical and practical heritage. EX also collaborates with Lavagne & Asociados Projects, Arts Connection and Veronika VR Solutions. EX is one of the few initiatives fully devoted to electronic art in Spain, and in spite its short trajectory, has already managed to establish itself as a reference in Spanish New Media. A proof of this it’s the success obtained by the electronic and experimental art international open call. 2016’s is its third edition. For EX’s first exhibition in the States, it’s been selected a collection of works with a common discourse on negation and interference as medium recoding mechanisms. Martin Reiche’s work consists on a connective structure placed between two signals, that pro-

118 | PINTA MIAMI 2016

duces a systemic interference. By questioning its functionality, the piece emerges as a sculpture that reflects on the promise of a over connected world. JosĂ© SĂĄnchez also turns to negation. In his piece a fan, like a broken screen, attacks the eye causing its retreat to the blind labyrinth of the human body, allowing another constitution of the image. Ian Flitman’s algorithmic narration reflects on a language that oscillates between an absent writing, a speaking action and the potential definition of electronic as a diffuse path for self-constitution. PolakVanBekkum’s work is a landscape originated from both the interference and coupling of two different media estrategies, a binaural microphone and a gps. The spectator is shown into a virtual walk through a distorted scenario, caused by the cooperation and distance between both devices. Lastly, it shall be presented Arturo Moya VillĂ©n’s work. His practice explores the violence and alienation of a word that vanishes through media. His work proposes a negative interactivity that forces the spectator to deny the work to enable its meaning.

Young Collectors Desk

Young Collectors Desk The first advise I give to new collectors is to make sure they love what they buy. The challenge is that many people do not have the opportunity to hear this simple rule before they adventure into the art world. In some instances, they do not even get the chance to discover their potential as collectors because they are too alienated from art. It is a common misconception that in order to be an art collector you need to be an art expert. In fact, to get started, you only need some basics. The main focus of the new initiative powered by Pinta Miami, Young Collectors Desk by Guijarro de Pablo Art Consulting, is to guide the next generation of collectors. I first conceived the idea of the Young Collectors Desk to make contemporary art more accessible. When I approached Diego Costa Peuser, Director

of Pinta Miami, he echoed my concerns and ideas, specially shared a passion for bringing art closer to a broader audience. During the tenth edition of Pinta Miami, Young Collectors Desk offers two different complimentary services sponsored by the fair: 1. Lead tours for aspiring collectors The Young Collectors Desk tours focus on the basics of art collecting, including how to walk an art fair, how to inquire about an art work, and how to start collecting. The tours schedule is available at pintamiami.com. 2. Advising for Pinta Miami VIP guests VIP guest can visit the Young Collectors Desk lounge to receive personalized advise by Guijarro de Pablo Art Consulting. Refer to the fair’s map to find us.
