Welcome to Pinta 2011!
¡Bienvenidos a Pinta 2011!
I am proud to present PINTA in its 5th anniversary in New York City as the Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art Fair that has become a landmark in this world capital and has expanded to London, one of Europe’s cultural epicenters. In its fifth edition, PINTA has relocated to a new venue in the heart of Manhattan, where it will host fifty galleries from three continents. Visitors will be able to appreciate its consolidation not only as an exhibition space but also as a valid instance for the dynamization of Latin American artistic practices. I can state without hesitation that at PINTA, in contact with an impeccable selection of works created by Latin American artists, the opportunities to meet and engage in a dialogue with curators, directors of museums and institutions and great art lovers in the international circuit multiply. Our guest artist in this edition is the Brazilian Antonio Manuel, who is simultaneously showing his rebellious work endowed with a persistent critical-political potential at the Americas Society, a sister organization in terms of the aim to highlight the dimension of the historical contribution of the continent’s artistic production, and of its vision regarding the construction of contemporaneity. Also, thanks to the support of Buenos Aires city, we will be exhibiting an important selection of works by Argentine photographer Aldo Sessa, curated by Rodrigo Alonso. The Art Projects section will be curated by the Italian critic and curator Jacopo Crivelli Visconti, whose selection of works by artists from different countries situated between Argentina and Mexico will bear witness to his knowledge of and insight into Brazilian as well as Latin American art. I would like to highlight the presence of galleries from the United States, Europe and Latin America representing the most prominent Latin American artists living all over the world. In a parallel way, we will continue expanding the successful Museum Acquisitions Program, which has allowed the incorporation of more than fifty works in the permanent collections of leading institutions in the United States. In this way, we will continue broadening PINTA’s influence as a platform for Latin American art to achieve its highest potential, not only in terms of its insertion in the market but also in the history of art. In the fulfillment of PINTA’s mission, special recognition should be given to the support received from museum directors and curators as well as from collectors and figures like the Mayor of New York City, Mr. Michael R. Bloomberg, who has backed our initiative since the Fair’s inception. Once more, I wish to renew my gratitude to all those persons and institutions that, in one way or another, contribute year after year to the success of this initiative, whose aim is that Latin American art become incorporated in the current world market and form part of the still ongoing history of modern and contemporary art.
Me enorgullece presentar Pinta en su V aniversario en la ciudad de Nueva York como la Feria Latinoamericana de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo que se ha constituido en un hito en esta capital del mundo y se ha expandido a uno de los epicentros culturales europeos: Londres. En su quinta edición, PINTA se ha trasladado a una nueva locación en el corazón de Manhatthan, donde albergará a cerca de medio centenar de galerías provenientes de tres continentes. Los visitantes apreciarán su consolidación no sólo como espacio expositivo, sino también como instancia dinamizadora de las prácticas artísticas latinoamericanas. No dudo en afirmar que en PINTA se multiplican, en torno a una impecable selección de obras creadas por artistas latinoamericanos, las instancias de diálogo y convergencia con curadores, directores de museos e instituciones y grandes amantes del arte provenientes del circuito internacional. En esta edición tenemos como artista invitado al brasileño Antonio Manuel, quien paralelamente está exhibiendo su obra díscola y de persistente potencial crítico-político, en Americas Society, una organización hermana en el propósito de dimensionar la creación continental en todo su aporte histórico y en su visión en construcción de la contemporaneidad. Igualmente, gracias al apoyo de la ciudad de Buenos Aires, exhibiremos una importante selección de la obra del fotógrafo Aldo Sessa, curada por Rodrigo Alonso. La sección de Art Projects será curada por el crítico y curador italiano Jacopo Crivelli Visconti, cuyo conocimiento y visión no sólo del arte brasileño sino también latinoamericano podrán apreciarse en su selección de obras de artistas provenientes de diversos países ubicados entre Argentina y México. Quiero destacar la presencia de galerías estadounidenses, europeas y latinoamericanas que representan a los más destacados artistas de Latinoamérica residentes en el mundo entero. De modo paralelo, continuaremos extendiendo el exitoso Programa de Adquisiciones de Museos que ha permitido la incorporación de más de medio centenar de obras a las colecciones permanentes de las más influyentes instituciones de los Estados Unidos. De este modo, seguiremos ampliando el poder de Pinta como plataforma para que el arte latinoamericano alcance su más alto potencial, no sólo en términos de su inserción en el mercado sino también en la historia del arte. En el cumplimiento de la misión de PINTA es necesario reconocer el apoyo recibido tanto de directores de museos y curadores, como de coleccionistas o de figuras como el Alcalde de la Ciudad de Nueva York, Sr. Michael R. Bloomberg, quien desde el inicio de la feria nos ha respaldado. Una vez más, deseo renovar mi agradecimiento a todas aquellas personas e instituciones que, de una manera u otra, contribuyen año a año al éxito de esta iniciativa cuyo objetivo es que la creación latinoamericana se integre al mercado mundial del presente y se inscriba en la historia del arte moderno y contemporáneo aún en construcción.

This year PINTA celebrates its fifth anniversary. It seems like yesterday that we began this dream, and yet four editions of our New York show have already taken place. Here we are gathered once again. Much has transpired during this time–in the world as well as in this very special microcosm of Latin American art, as well as–of course–in the life of PINTA. From a bubbling optimism to a depression in the financial sector and an historical collapse of the economy, we find ourselves in the midst of a disconcerting calm. However, PINTA has steadfastly followed the plan it traced for itself from its earliest days: to become, year after year, the most important gathering of the Latin American art world in the United States and in Europe. In this way, PINTA widens and promotes the diffusion of our artists beyond our own borders and in the most important cities of the world. We understand that the road to these ambitious goals will not always be without obstacles and setbacks, and we also know that the task that we began will continue to bear fruit long after those of us who initiated the project will be around to enjoy it, but with each passing year we feel increasingly proud of the ground we have covered. In spite of everything, PINTA continues to grow and consolidate itself, and the enormous success of the London edition in June is clear proof of this. Apart from the location of the fair–which for the first time places it in the heart of Manhattan–this year we are taking the first step toward expanding PINTA’s platform to include Spanish and Portuguese artists and galleries, an idea that will be realized with our European edition. We believe that it makes little sense for the visual arts to be the only artistic discipline in Latin America that exists facing away from–and exclusive of–the Spanish and Portuguese worlds. We don’t agree with this exception. Therefore, from now on PINTA will become Ibero-American in its reach and content. We are aware that this is an innovative and controversial decision. But once again we are pleased to propose new directions and challenges. As always, we are enormously grateful to our partners and sponsors, and to all of our collaborators. None of this would be possible without your unflagging help, participation and enthusiasm. Warmly.
Este año Pinta celebra su quinto aniversario. Pareciera ayer cuando comenzábamos con este sueño, y sin embargo, ya han ocurrido cuatro ediciones de nuestro show en Nueva York. Aquí nos encontramos nuevamente. Muchas cosas han acontecido en este tiempo, tanto en el mundo como en este microuniverso tan especial del arte latinoamericano, como –por supuesto– en la vida de Pinta. Desde un optimismo burbujeante en los negocios a una depresión y un colapso histórico y ahora, una calma y quietud un poco desconcertantes. Sin embargo, Pinta ha seguido incólume el plan y la misión que se trazó desde sus inicios: convertirse año a año en la reunión más relevante del mundo del arte latinoamericano en los Estados Unidos y en Europa. De ese modo, Pinta amplia y promueve la difusión de nuestros artistas fuera de nuestra propia región y en las capitales más importantes del planeta. Entendemos que estas metas tan ambiciosas se encuentran llenas de obstáculos y contratiempos, también sabemos que comenzamos y continuamos una tarea cuyos frutos finales posiblemente no los disfrutaremos los iniciadores, pero nos sentimos cada año reconfortados con el camino emprendido. Pinta crece y se consolida a pesar de todo, y la exitosísima edición de Londres en junio es una muestra cabal de ello. La novedad este año, además del lugar –que por primera vez pone a la feria en el corazón de Manhattan– es que daremos el primer paso para ampliar la plataforma de Pinta y cobijar artistas y galerías españolas y portuguesas, algo que se concretará en nuestra edición europea. Creemos que no tiene sentido que las artes visuales sean las únicas disciplinas artísticas en Latinoamérica que viven a espaldas y sin incluir al mundo español y portugués. No estamos de acuerdo con esa excepción. De este modo, de ahora en adelante Pinta se convierte en iberoamericana en su alcance y contenido. Somos conscientes de lo novedosa, y por lo tanto discutida, que será esta decisión. Pero una vez más nos complace plantear nuevos rumbos y nuevos desafíos. Como siempre, nuestra enorme gratitud para nuestros socios y sponsors, y para todos nuestros colaboradores. Sin su ayuda, participación y entusiasmo permanente, nada de esto sería posible. PINTA makes its fifth edition in New York and recently the second of his new venture in London, expanding and strengthening the international presence of Latin American Art, the strategies and challenges change and are reoriented in a global world, making them more attractive but also more intense, PINTA is a part of these changes and respond to new alternatives to the market demands. Indeed, PINTA has become established as an agglutinating endeavor, a unique meeting point, a time-space where the different protagonists of Latin American art converge in a platform for the development of art-associated activities for those who visit us. On this occasion, the programs that foster the incorporation of Latin American art in museums that have shown an interest in the art of the region have been renewed; thus, through the Pinta Museum Acquisition Program, this year we have requested the participation of The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and The Newark Museum. As mentioned above, PINTA and its team are developing new activities. Thus, in June of the current year, the second edition of PINTA LONDON was held at Earls Court with great success, and thanks to the support from galleries, artists, museums, curators, collectors, the media and the public at large, we have succeeded in broadening the market for Latin American art, thus allowing the diffusion of this art on an international scale.
Pinta realiza su quinta edición en New York y recientemente la segunda de su nuevo emprendimiento en Londres, ampliando y fortaleciendo la presencia internacional del Arte Latinoamericano, también las estrategias y los desafíos cambian, se reorientan en un mundo global, haciéndolos mas atractivos pero también mas intensos, Pinta es parte de esos cambios y responde a las nuevas alternativas que el mercado demanda. En efecto, PINTA se ha constituido en un evento aglutinador, un punto de encuentro único, un espacio-tiempo donde los distintos protagonistas del arte latinoamericano confluyen en una plataforma de desarrollo de actividades conexas para aquellos que nos visitan. En esta oportunidad, se renuevan los programas que promueven la incorporación de arte latinoamericano en museos que demostraron su interés en el arte de la región. Así, a través del Pinta Museum Acquisition Program, este año hemos invitado a participar a The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, y The Newark Museum. Tal como lo mencionara más arriba, Pinta y su equipo han estado desarrollando nuevas actividades. Así, en junio de este año se presentó en el Earls Court la segunda edición de PINTA LONDRES con un resultado exitoso, y gracias al apoyo de las galerías, artistas, museos, curadores, coleccionistas, la prensa y el público en general, hemos logrado una ampliación del mercado del Arte Latinoamericano y una mayor difusión del mismo.

ANTONIO MANUEL Antonio Manuel: I Want to Act, Not Represent!, the first solo exhibition in the United States of Brazilian artist Antonio Manuel (b.1947, Portugal). Curated by Claudia Calirman and Gabriela Rangel, the show focuses on Antonio Manuel’s preeminent role in the development of the groundbreaking neo-avant-garde movement that emerged in Rio de Janeiro during the 1960s. During the most repressive years of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1968-1974) Antonio Manuel’s artworks and actions instigated, and were many times at the center of controversial debates concerning institutional censorship. While some of his closest friends associated with Tropicalismo and the intellectual milieu of Rio de Janeiro were forced into exile, Antonio Manuel managed to remain in Brazil. Throughout this time he created a politically potent and visually striking corpus of experimental work that blended Neoconcrete, Pop, and Conceptual art as well as Udigrudi films. According to the renowned art critic Mário Pedrosa, Manuel’s work embodies the “experimental exercise of freedom.” Antonio Manuel: I Want to Act, Not Represent! gathers two-dimensional works, films, installations, and sculptures, as well as documentation on the artist’s radical performances. Well known in Europe and Latin America for his appropriation of images from the mass media, as well as his interventions in national Brazilian newspaper tabloids; the exhibition presents a condensed selection of works in which he developed a distinctive visual idiom through the use of the news printing process. The exhibition also features A arma fálica (A Phallic Weapon, 1970-1995) a photo-novella with captions written in collaboration with Lygia Pape and starred by Hélio Oiticica, Tineca and Paulo from the community of Mangueira. Antonio Manuel da Silva de Oliveira was born in Avelãs de Caminha, Portugal (1947) and moved with his family to Brazil in 1953. In the mid-1960s, he studied with Augusto Rodrigues at the Escolinha de Arte do Brasil (Little Art School of Brazil), and attended the workshop of Ivan Serpa as well as the art workshops opened at the Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro. From 1965 onwards, he has taken part in numerous exhibitions and biennials and today is one of Brazil’s most innovative and provocative artists. Amongst his most relevant solo shows are Antonio Manuel, Centro de Arte Helio Oiticica (1997); Global Conceptualism: Points of Origin, 1950-1980, (1999), Queens Museum of Art; Antonio Manuel, Fundacao Serralves, Porto (2000); Brazil: Body & Soul, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2001); Heterotopias: medio siglo sin lugar, Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (2004); Inverted Utopias: Avant-garde Art in Latin America, Museum of Fine Arts: Houston (2004); Beyond Geometry: Experiments in Form, 1940s-70s, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2004); Antonio Manuel: Fatos, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (2007); Arte no es vida: Actions by Artists of the Americas, 1960-2000, El Museo del Barrio (2008). Antonio Manuel: I Want to Act, Not Represent!, es el título de la primera exposición individual en Estados Unidos del artista brasilero Antonio Manuel (n.1947, Portugal). Curada por Claudia Calirman y Gabriela Rangel, la muestra se enfoca en el rol prominente de Antonio Manuel en el desarrollo del movimiento innovador de la neo-vanguardia que surgió en Río de Janeiro en la década de 1960. Durante los años más represivos de la dictadura militar en Brasil (1968-1974), las obras y acciones artísticas de Antonio Manuel instigaron y fueron muchas veces el centro de controvertidos debates concernientes a la censura institucional. Mientras algunos de sus amigos más íntimos vinculados con el Tropicalismo y el medio intelectual de Río de Janeiro se vieron obligados a exiliarse, Antonio Manuel logró permanecer en Brasil. Durante ese tiempo, creó un corpus de obra experimental políticamente potente y visualmente llamativo en el que se combinaban el arte neoconcreto, pop y conceptual, como así también films Udigrudi (Según el renombrado crítico de arte Mario Pedrosa, la obra de Manuel encarna “el ejercicio experimental de la libertad”). Antonio Manuel: I Want to Act, Not Represent! reúne obras bidimensionales, filmes, instalaciones y esculturas, como así también documentación sobre las performances radicales del artista. Conocido en Europa y América Latina por sus apropiaciones de imágenes de los medios masivos de comunicación y por sus intervenciones en periódicos populares de su país, su muestra presenta una selección condensada de obras en las que ha desarrollado un lenguaje visual distintivo a través de la utilización del proceso de impresión de periódicos. La muestra también incluye A arma fálica (El arma fálica, 1970-1995), una fotonovela con leyendas escritas en colaboración con Lygia Pape y protagonizada por Hélio Oiticica, Tineca y Paulo, de la comunidad de Mangueira. JACOPO CRIVELLI VISCONTI Degree Infinite / Grado Infinito ccording to Roland Barthes, writing comes close to the Degree Zero when it renounces any literary or stylistic ambition, thus becoming an almost mechanical instrument utilized with the exclusive aim of fulfilling a function. The so-called “general languages”, created by Jesuit missionaries in Latin America on the basis of the multitude of vernacular tongues, conformed to analogous premises: they were born as tools of communication aimed at overcoming the confusion resulting from the large number of languages spoken by the native people (Indians). The general languages were compiled from a variety of languages, which included Spanish and Portuguese, and according to the wishes of their creators, they were expected to remain forever simple and functional, basically pure, and ultimately abstract. But while they were theoretically static, the general languages actually underwent a constant evolution, which went hand in hand with the changing composition of the populations of the missions and the aldeas (villages). Almost immediately, the utopia of their purity, of their theoretical impermeability to the world’s disorderly, asymmetric and dirty beauty dissolved. Going against the wishes of their creators, the world appropriated them, transforming them into the opposite of what they were, that is, into something that was alive, palpitating and in constant metamorphosis: Babel’s chaotic plurality triumphed over the tyranny of monolingualism; Barthes’s degree zero became, so to speak, “degree infinite”. It is possible to catch a glimpse of something similar in the dichotomy between a utopian aspiration for purity and the unavoidable hybridization that dissolves it in Latin American contemporary production, where fragments of common matrices occasionally surface, and give rise to unpredictable, surprising resonances. Extremely personal works reveal connections and analogies with other works produced in remote contexts, showing an affinity and an attunement that transcend geographical and cultural diversities. In fact, many of the artists who participate in Degree Infinite have adopted as the basis or the point of departure for their work the formal or conceptual repertory of movements which conceived, in recent history, an ideal of purity that is comparable, in terms of ambition, to the one underlying the creation of the general languages. Such is the case, for instance, of concretism and modernism, which even played for some time a role that was analogous to the one played by those languages, by providing a common language for the whole continent. And the glimpses which can still be caught of the dreams, the aspirations and the spectacular failure of those movements renders the contemporary rereading of that repertory fascinating. In that respect, the evident presence of the artist’s hand constitutes the fundamental mark, the sign that ontologically distinguishes utopia, with its aspiration to a mechanical and neutral work, from the imperfect and fragile reality in which the artists gathered together in this show become immersed, with analogous ambition and aware of the fact that they are fulfilling the mission that the present times demand.

Las lenguas generales, creadas por los misioneros jesuitas en América Latina a partir de la miríada de idiomas indígenas, se ajustaban a premisas análogas: nacían como herramienta de comunicación para superar la confusión resultante del gran número de lenguas habladas por los indios. Las lenguas generales se recopilaban a partir de una variedad de idiomas, incluidos el español y el portugués, y de acuerdo con los deseos de sus creadores deberían mantenerse para siempre simples y funcionales, de una pureza rudimentaria y, en última instancia, abstracta. Pero aun cuando eran teóricamente estáticas, las lenguas generales experimentaron de hecho una constante evolución, que acompañó a la cambiante composición de las poblaciones de las misiones y de las aldeas. Casi inmediatamente, la utopía de su pureza, de su teórica impermeabilidad a la belleza tan desordenada, asimétrica y sucia del mundo, se deshizo. Contrariando el deseo de sus inventores, el mundo se apropiaba de ellas, transformándolas y convirtiéndolas en lo opuesto de lo que eran, es decir, en algo vivo, palpitante, en incesante metamorfosis: la pluralidad caótica de Babel triunfaba sobre la tiranía del monolingüismo, el grado cero de Barthes se convertía, por así decirlo, en “grado infinito”. Es algo parecido a esa dicotomía entre una utópica aspiración a la pureza y el ineludible mestizaje que la disuelve lo que a veces es posible vislumbrar en la producción contemporánea latinoamericana, donde fragmentos de matrices comunes afloran en ocasiones, suscitando resonancias imprevisibles, sorprendentes. Obras extremadamente personales revelan conexiones y analogías con otras producidas en contextos lejanos, demostrando una afinidad y una sintonía que trascienden las diversidades geográficas y culturales. Muchos de los artistas que integran grado infinito, de hecho, toman como base o punto de partida el repertorio formal o conceptual de movimientos que, en la historia reciente, concibieran un ideal de pureza comparable, cuanto a ambición, al subyacente en la creación de las lenguas generales, como el concretismo y el modernismo, que incluso desempeñaron durante algún tiempo un papel análogo al de esas lenguas, al proporcionar un vocabulario común a todo el continente. Y es lo que se alcanza todavía a entrever de los sueños, las aspiraciones y el espectacular fracaso de esos movimientos lo que torna fascinante la relectura contemporáneas de ese repertorio. En ese sentido, la presencia evidente de la mano del artista es la marca fundamental, el signo que diferencia ontológicamente a la utopía, con su aspiración a una obra mecánica y neutra, de la realidad imperfecta y frágil en la que se sumergen, con análoga ambición y con la conciencia de estar cumpliendo la misión que estos tiempos demandan, los artistas aquí reunidos.
