PINTA NEW YORK 2012 PRESENTATION

Alejandro Zaia, Mauro Herlitzka and Diego Costa Peuser

Welcome to Pinta New York 2012, which celebrates the sixth edition of the fair featuring new strategies that broaden its panoramic view of modern and contemporary art. On this occasion, Pinta is convening alternative art spaces from Central America; it is also fostering a dialogue between Latin American art and art from the Iberian Peninsula; and it continues presenting the individual “Art Projects”, selected by the Brazilian curator Jacopo Crivelli Visconti on the basis of a criterion that unifies works from different periods around the relationship between art and life. The guest artist in this edition will be the New York-based Argentine artist Liliana Porter, whose conceptual oeuvre has challenged the paradigms of representation and the boundaries between different media. The presence of different galleries that continue revisiting the legacy of the conceptual pioneers and of abstract geometric tradition along a line that culminates in the expressions of the new geometric artists, alongside the participation of galleries representing the latter movement in Spain, where it was known as “normative art”, is particularly outstanding. Several Spanish galleries are also featuring the work of minimalist or conceptual artists, both from Spain and from Latin America. The fair also makes it possible to explore other contemporary artistic practices and showcases emerging Spanish-American art, thus becoming consolidated as a privileged space to view languages under construction. Parallel to this, Pinta Acquisitions Program reaffirms its matching funds strategy as an incentive for the incorporation of works exhibited at the fair in the prominent collections of leading museums and art institutions. More than a million dollars have been invested in works which currently form part of the permanent collections of institutions such as the Rufino Tamayo Museum in Mexico City, MALBA in Buenos Aires, the Pinacoteca do Estado de Sao Paulo, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and El Museo del Barrio in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Harvard Art Museum, the Centre Pompidou and Tate Modern. The museums that have been invited to participate in Pinta 2012 − the fair’s sixth edition − are the Bronx Museum of Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of Art, New York, and the Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico. We are confident that the ongoing expansion of Latin American and Iberian art and their incorporation in the global art scene will maintain its growing trend, partly thanks to endeavors such as Pinta New York 2012. Thank you for helping us support through your participation, a common vision currently under construction. Board of Directors

SELECTED PROJECTS BY JACOPO CRIVELLI VISCONTI supported by ARCOS DORADOS

JACOPO CRIVELLI VISCONTI Imprecise Borders/Indeterminación fronteriza he Art Projects section, in which each gallery shows the work of one single artist, somewhat sets a counterpoint to the rest of the fair, which is so charged with information and stimuli that deeper appreciation of the poetics of each work becomes difficult. In this respect, the individual booths are islands where viewers can take time to reflect, plunging into the distinct worldviews posed by artists, thus bringing out the desire for “a different time” that every work of art suggests. The apparently heterogeneous list of artists selected for the individual project segment of the Pinta 2012 Art Show ranges from one of the great masters of the Brazilian Concrete movement, Willys de Castro (Brazil, 1926-1988), to emerging young artists such as Ramón Miranda Beltrán (Puerto Rico, 1982), for whom artistic production is inseparable from profound political engagement. At first glance, these two artists are opposites, both regarding their conceptions and the formal solutions they have chosen. Yet, in a certain way their oeuvres only seem to be the far extremes of the relationship between art and life – the ineludible question that guided curatorial work for this edition of Art Projects. Besides Ramón Miranda Beltrán, the search for a fusion of artistic production and social activism is patent and direct, in various degrees of intensity, in the videos and multimedia installations of Dias and Riedweg (Maurício Dias, Brazil, 1964 and Walter Riedweg, Switzerland, 1955), the courageous and necessary interdisciplinary projects of Carlos Motta (Colombia, 1978), and even the appropriation of Situationist strategies by Nicolás Guagnini (Argentina, 1966). However, it is also true that the experimentations with abstraction of Willys de Castro already alluded to the desire to merge art and life, artistic creation and industrial production, ultimately aimed at building a fairer and more democratic world. This indefinable threshold separating the artistic world from raw life is investigated in the work of Luz María Bedoya (Peru, 1969). On describing her oeuvre, she speaks precisely of “indeterminación fronteriza,” a locus akin to that of the abstract paintings and photographs of Juan Iribarren (Venezuela, 1956), poetic portraits of atmospheric changes filtered through the windows of his New York studio. The paintings of Omar Barquet (Mexico, 1979), also abstract, emerged from a close relationship with music and songs he studied, while the drawings and neons of Cabelo (Brazil, 1967), although quite different from a formal point of view, also presuppose his intense musical and poetic activity, albeit in a hardly literal way.
