Southern Highlands

Vineyards & Cellar Doors The cool climate wine region

Traditionally, wine growing in Australia was done in warmer regions where access to water for irrigation made growing grapes easier. Since the early 1990s, there have been a number of traditional wine makers establish boutique wineries successfully in the cooler climate of the Southern Highlands. Many of the region’s winemakers use traditional and modern techniques to produce distinctive cool climate wines, so the area is gaining recognition for the quality and variety produced here.

All these varietals are now in a bottle. In 2001, a further 7 acres were prepared for planting out and in 2002 adding Pinot Noir, Tempranillo and Cabernet Franc. In addition to the assortment of cool climate wines produced on the 13 hectare vineyard, including sauvignon blanc, riesling, pinot gris, pinot noir and merlot, a selection of homemade jams and relishes are also available for you to taste.

The combination of climate, soil composition, slope, rainfall, sunlight, aspect and temperature, all contribute to the individuality of the wines. Viticultural experience gained over the earlier years prompted the decision to change some varietals. In 2005 they replaced Merlot for AlbariĂąo, an aromatic white variety from the cool regions of Spain. Sparkling wine varietals suit the climate exceptionally well so they planted Pinot Meunier in 2005 to add complexity to sparkling blends.
