Warragamba DamFest 15 October

DAMFEST 2017 will be held on Sunday 15th October at Warragamba Recreation Reserve, Warragamba. The day will commence at 10am and conclude at 4pm. DamFest is a major community event that provides a venue for all local community and sporting groups and emergency services to

showcase their organisations and show the world what a unique area this is. This will be the thirteenth year of the event which is organised by Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre, a not for profit community organisation whose ethos involves community engagement and without their support Damfest would not be the great event that it is. The community of Warragamba is a legacy of the pre-World War II project designed to provide water to the burgeoning greater Sydney Metropolitan area. The “temporary township was built to house the thousands of skilled and unskilled workers who were gathered together from across the globe to create the largest concrete structure of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. DamFest organisers invite everyone to come along and share in the excitement and experience the day. Thanks to our major sponsors, Wollondilly Shire Council, Allam Property Group, Shannon Insurance, Sydney Water, Custom Sheds and Dirty Deeds Trucking. www.highlandsimag.com.au 15

The Highlands Theatre Group presents: The Odd Couple - Female Version Opens on 10 November Following the enormous success in May of ‘The Vicar of Dibley’, the Highlands Theatre Group has wasted no time in preparing for their next exciting production, the female version of Neil Simon’s timeless comedy, ‘The Odd Couple’, which opens at the Mittagong Playhouse on November 10. Having its debut in 1965 on Broadway and enjoying enormous, subsequent popularity, ‘The Odd Couple’ inspired a film, as well as a long running T.V. series. The names Felix and Oscar, became synonymous with fastidiousness and slovenliness, both practised in equally alarming proportions. The female version of this production embodies the same humour, but Felix and Oscar have been replaced by two polar opposites, the female characters of Olive Madison and Florence Ungar. Sports trivia fan Olive, enjoys her free range lifestyle of disarray in her New York apartment, where clothes, dirty laundry and empty food containers are scattered throughout and it is here, that the story begins. The quirky members of Olive’s Trivial Pursuit Club, meet at her apartment one evening for their usual, weekly game and obligatory consumption of stale snacks, only to notice that their uptight and obsessively neat friend Florence, is strangely absent. When she does finally make her entrance, it’s not without drama and tears. Her husband wants a divorce and Florence is devastated. Olive’s hasty suggestion to Florence, that she move into the guest room, is one that she regrets immediately, particularly when Florence responds by volunteering to clean and tidy the entire apartment! Clearly, Olive and Florence are totally incompatible as roommates and they become locked into a domestic battle of words and

actions. This leads to some truly hilarious and lively exchanges between the two, as they attempt to adapt to each other’s impossible living standards. Director for this production, Steven Clancy, continues to enjoy a lengthy involvement with Community Theatre, in roles both on and off the stage and he is delighted to be able to present this female version of ‘The Odd Couple’ as HTG’s final production for 2017. Moss Vale & Bundanoon Moss Vale is central to

Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office, the Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of 19C architecture. The Moss Vale area was once occupied by the Gundangara people, though they had disappeared by the 1870s, partly due to the loss of their hunting land to European settlers. Moss Vale has a large part of the local Industry - as well it is a minor centre for agriculture. Many light and medium industries are found in and around Moss Vale.

Take a walk or cycle in the crisp autumn air! As you drive across the bridge over the Wingecarribee River near Moss Vale, you’ll see a concrete path winding across the paddock. This walk and bike way is a 4.5 km walk to Burradoo.

Bundanoon. Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a heritage charm about it. The town has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow.

The area is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Historic Berrima Berrima is a historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. It is a favourite destination for Sydneysiders, Illawarra and Canberra residents and has exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. In the 19thC, the township was destined to become the main town of the Southern Highlands, but when the railway line was built through Moss Vale in the 1860s, it faded to a sleepy village. The first Europeans to investigate the area were sent by the colonial governor, Governor Hunter. With a water supply provided by the nearby Wingecarribee River, a town plan, in the manner of an English village, was laid out by

Robert Hoddle. Few substantial houses were built, although by the 1850s sturdy Anglican and Catholic churches replaced the original wattle and daub versions. Licensed since 1834, the Surveyor-General Inn, in the centre of town, is the longest licensed hotel in NSW. By the 1960s, the preservation of old Georgian buildings became of national importance to our heritage, so the entire village of Berrima was declared a historic village by the National Trust. The Courthouse Museum and Berrima Gaol are two impressive sandstone buildings which is a 'must see' for visitors. The gaol was in use as a prison between 1839 and 2011 but reopened in 2016. The most interesting period in the history of Berrima is perhaps when it became an internment camp for enemy aliens and POWs during WW1.

This complete story can be found at Berrima District Museum as well as many other local history stories. After visiting the Museum (located on the right at the southern end of the village opposite the park) take the Berrima River Walk to understand the impact of the POWs had on the town. Berrima is said to be a word from the language of the Dharawal people meaning ‘Black Swan’. The Dharawal were displaced in the area by farming and grazing interests and were rarely seen by the 1870s.

The Southern Highlands Art Studio Trail The Southern Highlands Art Studio Trail will again be one of the biggest events on the Shire’s arts calendar. Featuring works from over 60 artists and 40 studios from across the Highlands - the trail promises something for everyone. “This year we’re pleased to welcome 15 new studios to the trail,” said Council’s Cultural Development Officer Jenny Kena. Held over the first two weekends of November, the trail offers visitors a rare opportunity to go behind the studio doors of some of our brightest artists. Traditional and contemporary painting, printmaking, etching, ceramics, woodwork, textiles, bookbinding, photography, sculpture, printmaking and jewellery can also be seen on the Art Trail. “The Southern Highlands has long been a place

favoured by artists,” said Jenny. “The beauty of the area provides the perfect conditions for inspiration and creativity.” The Southern Highlands Art Studio Trail is the feature event of the month-long Southern Highlands Arts Festival and will be held over the weekend of 4 - 5 November and 11 -12 November from 10am to 5pm. “This is a rare opportunity to watch artists at work, ask questions and buy direct from the source,” said Jenny. “It’s a free event, but be prepared to be tempted and make a special purchase or two along the way.” For more information on the Southern Highland Arts Festival including a full program of events, participating artists and the Art Studio Trail map, visit www.shaf.com.au or call Jenny on 4868 0855.

Robertson

the green heart of the Highlands Robertson is the lushest

of the Southern Highlands landscapes and is renowned for its rich volcanic soil in which potatoes are grown for the NSW market. Potatoes were the first crops planted in Robertson when a large parcel of land was cleared in the mid 19C. It could be said that this was due to the prevalence of landholders with an Irish background. Macquarie Pass, linking the Highlands to the coast was such a brilliant spectacle that Robertson soon became the eastern gateway to the Highlands. Local businessmen, eager to capitalise on the town’s potential, brought the attractions of the area to general attention; the waterfalls, gorges and lush countryside. Robertson’s development followed the usual pattern of rural towns with churches, cricket and football teams,

schools, school of arts and agricultural societies. Each October, the Robertson Railway Station Gardens are ablaze with the most spectacular display of flowering waratahs in NSW. Stroll through the gardens any time and purchase a bunch from the Fettlers Shed. The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, a Zipline and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama. The village is delighful but as well is an ideal base from which to explore a spectacular hinterland; it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands. It is a great place to use as a base when exploring the Highlands, close to national parks and half way between the coast and plains. It is within easy reach of delightful

towns which are all great places to wander, stop for something to eat and browse through little shops and galleries. Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre is located a short walk from the magnificent Fitzroy Falls, where

water plunges over 80m to the valley below. It’s an ideal base to explore the lush escarpment country of the Southern Highlands between Robertson and Nowra. Take some time to browse the award-winning centre - you’ll find loads of information about the local history, wildlife and birdwatching of this unique area. With wheelchair-accessible facilities and a short boardwalk to the scenic views of the waterfalls, it’s an ideal location for families, groups and the elderly. The centre offers insights into the Aboriginal history of the region with Aboriginal Cultural walks. Discovery rangers can tailor specific environmental programmes for schools, tour groups and communities. The visitor centre is a great place to buy authentic Australian-made souvenirs and when you’ve worked up an appetite, the café serves up delicious meals and drinks. If you feel like stretching your legs, there’s nearby West Rim walking track and the East Rim Wildflower walking track is spectacular in spring.
